2 TOM S SPACE Hello everyone! Happy independence day to all. Summer just seems to be flying by now that we have been able to actually get on the bikes some. I hope everyone has enjoyed the rides so far. It won t be long till the weather starts to cool down again and some fall rides I have been wanting to go on will be coming up. We are going to give the bike blessing at the July gathering one last chance. If we get another rain out, I am going to make arrangements with Pastor John from Harrold Zion Church for the first nice Saturday or Sunday we have in July to have the bikes blessed at his church. Jean and I really enjoy being directors, it has been an interesting experience learning all this new stuff and having a great group of people to help out. As you can see, I have redesigned the newsletter. It was really getting difficult changing it for every month, my program could not decipher some of the settings so I started from scratch while trying to keep to the original design. I hope you all like it. Which brings up another issue, some folks are having trouble opening the newsletter files. I send the M.S.Word and a PDF. File in the s. I also upload both to face book and the PDF. file To the district site. If you are having trouble opening them, please check to see that your software is up to date on your computers. Paul and Joanie joined us in May for the Wings for Warriors ride Chapter- T sponsored. There were 38 bikes on the ride and we managed to raise nearly $ with our donations and the Chinese auction. It was about a 75 mile round trip ride and we had a very tasty dinner afterwards. It was sunny and warm, the rain managed to hold off until after the ride. We got into a good rain near Donegal, the water was splashing up under my bike and I think my coils got wet. Next thing I know I could barely make it up the hill by 711. We had to stop by the old Christmas store under their tent till my engine cleared up. Thank you Paul for sticking around till it ran better. That s the joy of driving an antique motorcycle I guess. Well, Kyle McGary has stepped down as webmaster for the chapter s web page, so I want to thank him for all the work he has done with it for the past years. Len Rovenski is taking over for him and I hope everyone enjoys the page. Let us know if there is any problem with a link or something. I would like our resident photographers to bring some of their digital pictures to a gathering so I can download them to my computer for the web site. It would be nice to post some recent pictures of our rides. I am still keeping the Facebook group running, so some folks can upload some pictures for it also. We had a great time at the Doublewide grill last month. It was a big crowd and we got a chance to visit with everybody. The waitress was a little overwhelmed with the size of the group and a couple orders/checks got mixed up, but all in all it we had a nice time. I think we can give them another try later. We had a good ride to the chainsaw festival and Penn Alps. Take care, and be safe out there. Tom
3 REMINDERS We have been reminded by the district directors if your dues have not been paid, please bring those up to date. Please be sure to return all your raffle tickets, stubs and money by the July gathering so we can send everything into district. I apologize for the error, I had the Seven Springs rib festival listed for July 23 rd. The actual date is July 16 th. I will pass around the sign-in sheet at the next gathering if you want to sign up or cancel if you have too. If we are going to have another rain-out for the bike blessing on the tenth, I will call everyone and let them know what weekend day we will gather at the church or somewhere to have them blessed. Don t forget to sign up for our anniversary picnic at the July and Aug. gatherings so we have a good idea how many are planning to attend. The web site may be down for a few weeks until Len has a chance to get things going with it so please be patient. If we have a good weather weekend over Independence day weekend, we can possibly have a lunch/ice cream run to the Country Cottage in Sutersville. We are still in need of assistant directors. If anyone wants to help out, please call or talk to Jean and myself if you are interested. We are trying to put together a train ride on the Potomac Eagle this year and possibly an overnight stay around there. We will need a definite commitment from at least 20 people for a discount on ride tickets and they will have to be paid in advance. (Non-refundable) Also if you wish to stay overnight, we will need a deposit as well to secure the rooms. I will inform everyone on the progress and date for the ride as we get things in order for this.
4 RIDER EDUCATION Trailer Hitch Fundamentals Connect those chains properly By: James R. Davis While at my favorite cycle accessory shop the other day I met a man who was the proud owner of a new Wing and a color-coordinated trailer that he was polishing mightily in preparation for a week out on the road. He had 20 years riding experience and has 'always' had a trailer, so he said. We talked at length about handling characteristics, effects on gas mileage, tire wear (including that of the rear tire on the bike), and proper weight distribution and loading practices. All in all I believe I learned a lot from him. Then I noticed his hitch. It was a beauty - all chrome and besides having the typical ball connector, it had a swivel in it. Even the chains he used were chromed! So what's this message all about? Those chains. The man did not have them crossed. In all his years of pulling a trailer nobody had ever bothered to tell him to cross those chains so that they form a 'catch' for the tongue should the hitch ever disconnect from the ball. (One other benefit is that when in a tight turn crossed chains tend to prevent the length of chain on one side from being 'stretched' while on the other side being dragged on the ground.) When he left the accessory shop they were crossed. If that man's hitch had ever managed to dislodge from the ball the tongue would have dug itself into the pavement and a good ride would have been over! Further, unlike what happens when you lose a trailer from the back-end of a car or truck, the trailer's tongue is right in line with the motorcycle's rear tire. Even if it could not quite reach the ground should it disconnect, that tongue can certainly reach the tire if the chains are too long. In all, bad news! So, when you attach that trailer to your bike be sure to cross a pair of chains under its tongue before connecting the chains to the hitch and be sure that the chains are not so long that the tongue can reach your rear tire after a disconnect. Also, don't use cheap spring clip connectors on the end of those chains. If those chains are supporting the tongue of your trailer and you were to then stand on that tongue (as some policemen are apt to try to 'test' them), they MUST HOLD. Incidentally, in most states you are required to use TWO chains when pulling a trailer, and in every state you are totally responsible for any damage that the trailer might cause should it get away from you.

7 You know, every time we go somewhere with Wally and Sharon it turns into an interesting adventure to say the least. In May, she tried to scare us away with Kleenex chaff while following them. Last month Wally was passing out money to all of the waitress at Penn Alps. We stopped at a Sheetz for a break and Sharon had Pepsi slush all over the counter and rolling out of her cup. She looked like a mason trying to trowel out a cement floor. Sheetz had to call for more napkins because she used up their month s supply. She walks out the door saying to the girl behind the counter He paid for mine!! She looked at me and said So your paying for the cleanup?? I said no and ran out of the place. LOL!! Just kidding Sharon!! P.S. Wally, thank you for the coils, I hope I get a chance to put them on before we leave for our trip in September. The truths of life!!!!! 1.Law of Mechanical Repair - After your hands become coated with grease, your nose will begin to itch and you'll have to pee. 2.Law of Gravity - Any tool, nut, bolt, screw, when dropped, will roll to the least accessible place in the universe. 3.Law of Probability - The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of your act. 4.Law of Random Numbers - If you dial a wrong number, you never get a busy signal; someone always answers. 5.Variation Law - If you change lines (or traffic lanes), the one you were in will always move faster than the one you are in now. 6.Law of the Bath - When the body is fully immersed in water, the telephone will ring. 7.Law of Close Encounters - The probability of meeting someone you know INCREASES dramatically when you are with someone you don't want to be seen with. 8.Law of the Result - When you try to prove to someone that a machine won't work, IT WILL!!! 9.Law of Biomechanics - The severity of the itch is inversely proportional to the reach. 11.The Coffee Law - As soon as you sit down to a cup of hot coffee, your boss will ask you to do something which will last until the coffee is cold. 12.Murphy's Law of Lockers - If there are only 2 people in a locker room, they will have adjacent locker. 13.Law of Physical Surfaces - The chances of an open-faced jelly sandwich landing face down on a floor are directly correlated to the newness and cost of the carpet or rug. 14. Law of Logical Argument - Anything is possible especially IF you don't know what you are talking about. 15.Law of Physical Appearance - If the clothes fit, they're ugly. 16.Law of Public Speaking - A closed mouth gathers no feet! 17.Law of Commercial Marketing Strategy - As soon as you find a product that you really like, they will stop making it OR the store will stop selling it! 18.Doctors' Law - If you don't feel well, make an appointment to go to the doctor, by the time you get there, you'll feel better. But don't make an appointment and you'll stay sick. If you don't share this to your friends, your belly button will unscrew and fall off. Really...It's true. I read it on the Internet!
