CHAPTER DIRECTORS AL & CATHY NIGHSWANDER June and July lasted about 5 minutes! It has been a busy time for Chapter B members. We have had members traveling and visiting Arizona, the Outer Banks, Washington D.C., the Dragon Tail, Put-in-Bay, Sandusky, Oregon and down the west coast, Alaska, Amish country, Tennessee, and probably more that I have forgotten! We have ridden in the Shelby Bicycle parade and the Shiloh Ox Roast parade. We served sandwiches and sides at the Shiloh Ox Roast and helped at the Richland County Fair. Thank you, Alice Snyder for organizing the workers. Randy and Linda Porter organized the $5 Picnic Ride to East Harbor Park and Toft s. Thank you for the wonderful time after the July gathering. What a great time we had at the dinner rides. Thank you, Karen and Larry Bland. They are doing a phenomenal job at taking us to new and adventurous places. There were also about ten bikes from Chapter B that went to the Wooster Chapter I s Teddy Bear Ride on July 29. What a grand time we had at this charity event. Thank you Ohio Chapter I for organizing this event for the children. We stopped at Jake s in Ashland for a terrific meal!! (Oh, by the way, several ladies of the chapter met for Ladies Night out in July!! What a great time we had at supper and the movie! Thank you, all my friends, for helping made this a relaxing, dancing in our seats time. We will certainly plan another soon.) AND we still have Wing Ding, some are traveling to Mount Airy, and the Fall Leaf Ride to look forward too! With each ride, I thank the Lord and the safety measure that the drivers and co-riders never fail to practice so that we remain safe on the adventure. The warmth and security that we feel as we ride is because of the love of the Great Shepherd and dear friends. Chapter B is the best. We have been an awesome Ohio GWRRA chapter now for 35 years! At the Ohio Buckeye Rally in June 2018, we celebrated the 35 th birthday of GWRRA Ohio District. We, as a chapter, won the $50 gift certificate to Dairy Queen, because we brought the most food items to the rally to fill the shelves of the Mansfield Food Pantry. AFTER the SEPTEMBER 16 th gathering, we will ride to the Galion Heise Park to enjoy Dairy Queen ice cream cake and cold bottled water and sandwiches. We hope that members will not be traveling on the 16 th so that each of our members can be there to celebrate the chapter birthday. If you have pictures and memories to share, bring them along. An RSVP to (text or call Al), will be helpful to plan on the size of the ice cream cake and meat for sandwiches. See you soon. Hugs, Al and Cathy 2
ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTORS MIKE & CHERYL FINLEY MIKE AND CHERYL ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTORS JIM & CAROL CULLER After our July Meeting we rode to East Harbor for our $5.00 picnic ride. Randy & Linda Porter along with Randy s son and his wife had the burgers and dogs ready when we got there. A BIG THANKS TO THEM. There was a 40% chance of rain, but we didn t see rain only heat! Some of the group went to Toft s after the picnic and some headed for home. On Mondays the Mansfield News Journal always has an article on a Veteran. Our one and only, Larry Steinhilber, had a great article on when he served. It s great that the vets are now being recognized for their service. When Gage saw Larry s picture, from his service days, he said Larry looked like Steve McQueen. How about that Larry?? Well, quite a few Chapter B Members did a great job working at the Richland County Fair this week. For all of those who volunteered, it certainly is appreciated. We realize everyone is very busy with their lives and it takes time away from that. However, THANKS TO ALL OF YOU. 5 The Chapter Fall ride seems to be coming together nicely. I will have all the details in the September newsletter so stay tuned! Date: October 13 & 14. Remember it s the ride and those you ride with! Susan and Rich DISTRICT EDUCATOR OHIO - GWRRA BILL AND PAT STILES This month I am going to cover the Levels Program and how easy it is to obtain each level. Explanation of the GWRRA Rider Education Levels Program... Purpose The GWRRA Rider Education Program (REP) is intended to make the motorcycle environment safer by reducing injuries and fatalities and increasing motorcyclist skills and awareness. The REP does not propose to have all the answers. However, our close-working relationship with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), as well as additional GWRRA programs and studies, has provided a wealth of information for use in establishing a comprehensive Rider Education Program. Through Commitment, Education and Application, we can reduce our accident rate significantly. Listed below are several benefits of a fully implemented GWRRA Rider Education Program at the Chapter level: Increased rider knowledge Increased rider safety skills Prevention of accidents Reduced injuries Reduced fatalities Improved public image of motorcyclists Enhanced enjoyment of motorcycle riding The motorcycle community is already realizing many positive benefits from the GWRRA Rider Education Program. Through the efforts of the Rider Education Officers and participation of the membership and others, we will reach our goal of establishing the safest motorcycle environment possible. Level I: Safety by Commitment - The first big step to success Level I of the Rider Education Program is also referred to as Safe Miles. It represents the commitment of the Rider and/or the Co-Rider to practice safe 5
motorcycle operation whenever they operate their motorcycle. Safety is a state of mind which can only be attained through total commitment. Every successful accomplishment begins with a commitment to reach the intended objective. This is true of the Rider Education Program and includes a promise to learn for the sake of Rider, Co-Rider, friends and family, and others on the road. Though there is no mileage requirement to enter Level I, the commitment to safe riding is tracked by the number of accident free miles since joining GWRRA. Accident free miles are accumulated in 5,000-mile increments and may be updated at yearly intervals. Requirement: Verbal commitment to ride safely always. No cost to sign up. Patches available at $6.00 per participant Receive: "Safe Miles" patch, Rider (or Co-rider) Rocker, and mileage pin. Level II: Safety by Education Level II of the REP is also referred to as Tour Rider. It represents the commitment of the Rider and/or Co Rider to be safer motorcycle riders by taking approved motorcycle riding courses at regular intervals. GWRRA has chosen several educational training programs for the Riders and Co- Riders such as the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) programs, the United Sidecar Association course, the CSC (Canadian Safety Council) programs, and the GWRRA's Advanced Riding courses. Completing these courses provides the foundation and skills for your quest to be a safe motorcycle rider. All recognized programs are taught by qualified and nationally certified instructors. For the Co-Rider, we have provided an excellent seminar and "Two Up" programs to assist in their role in the safety aspect of motorcycle riding. Motorcycle education goes "hand in hand" with commitment. The "on bike" education by MSF, USCA, CSC and GWRRA for the Rider and Co-Rider and the "off bike" education designed specifically for the Co-Rider, provide a very effective approach to motorcycle safety. This is when a REP participant truly begins to understand what the Level I commitment means and sees the value in the program. Requirement: Rider - a Certified Rider Course with 5,000 safe miles. Co- Rider - certified Co-rider Seminar or 2-up Rider Course. No cost to sign up. Patches available at $5.00 per participant Receive: "Red Triangle" patch for either Rider or Co-rider signifying Level II Ill: Safety by Preparedness Level III of the REP is also referred to as Certified Tour Rider/Co-Rider. It represents the commitment of the Rider and/or Co-Rider to be prepared in the event of an accident to give aid and possibly save lives. This is done by being knowledgeable in First Aid or CPR and carrying a first aid kit on their motorcycle always. 6
It would be wonderful if we could achieve the coveted goal of zero accidents; however, we know realistically, accidents will happen. Because of this, it is important to be fully prepared to lend aid to unfortunate accident victims. It is important to always be prepared to save a life. Level III of the Rider Education Program was developed to deal with such circumstances by recognizing and encouraging proper First Aid or CPR training. CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) has been used to save many lives. Being trained to render CPR or First Aid is a tremendous asset to those the REP participant will meet daily. Requirement: Current in Level II and have taken either First Aid or CPR training No cost to sign up. Patches available at $4.00 per participant Level IV: Safety by Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness Level IV is the most prestigious of the REP levels and is referred to as Master Tour Rider/ Co-Rider. It represents the highest commitment of the Rider and/or Co-Rider to safe riding and preparedness. This commitment is shown by a demonstrated history of safe miles and current certification in both First Aid and CPR... This Master Tour Riders/Co T Riders are the finest example to every one of the highest commitment to safe motorcycle operation and preparedness. Level IV of the REP, the Master Tour Rider, was designed for those special caring individuals who desire to "be all they can be" with regards to motorcycle safety. The requirements are more stringent than Level III and require a greater commitment. These individuals are caring, trained and prepared with the experience to back them up. It is realized Level IV is not for everyone, but for those who desire to be of greater service to their fellow man, it is the correct prescription. Why desire to be a Level IV Master Tour Rider? It's a worthy goal. Being prepared to save a life is a high calling indeed! These individuals are shining examples to the rest of the GWRRA membership. Others aspire to practice the same commitment as displayed by those who have attained Level IV. For that reason, because these individuals are ambassadors to the members at all levels, GWRRA provides a special gathering to celebrate the Master Tour Rider commitment each year at the District Rally, Region D Rally and Wing Ding. Requirement: Current in Level Ill for one year and have taken both First Aid and CPR training. Have 25,000 Safe Miles and must be committed to riding with "Proper Riding Gear" always. Cost: $35.00 for each participant (Black and Gold patch is available for another $8.00) receive: "Special Triangular" 7
patches with dark blue border and your individual Master number embroidered on it. Receive: "Certified Tour Rider" or Certified Co-Rider patch. So, there you have the program structure. Level 1 Safety by Commitment Level II Safety by Education Level III Safety by Preparedness. Level IV Safety by Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness The GWRRA is proud to present the Rider Education Program. We encourage you to think seriously about motorcycle safety and be a participant in the GWRRA Rider Education Program. You should also remember the old cliché, an ounce of prevention IS worth a pound of cure. Always wear protective riding apparel! To sign up or to receive more information, contact your Chapter Director Have a great day and be safe Bill & Pat Stiles District Educators DINNER RIDE COORDINATORS LARRY & KAREN BLAND Thursday, August 23 dinner will be at Wedge Wings 167 SR 39 in Perrysville. Meet at the restaurant. Dinner will be at 6:00. Saturday, September 1 which is Labor Day Weekend. Due to lack of interest to the dinner ride to Mason Jar there will be no dinner ride on this date. 9 2018 COUPLE OF THE YEAR DON SCHROEDER & DEB PARKS Where is this year going??? Goodness, here it is the end of July already. We must be having fun eh. What a great picnic ride that we had after our July monthly Goldwing meeting. I believe there were over 30 people who participated in the trip up to the East Harbor Park for the picnic. It was a WARM day, but all survived. A big thanks to Randy and Linda and Randy s son for preparing the hotdogs and burgers. Everyone else brought some pretty good goodies with the $5 allowance. This is a picture of the group 1 that rode up for the picnic. Al did a fine job of getting us up there safely. Mike Finley lead group 2 up and we all had a great time. The Goldwing members helped out at the Shiloh Ox Roast Friday evening serving the 9,200 pounds of beef that the firemen had prepared. Tis my understanding that they had a nice parade on Saturday also. From a very reliable source, stated that there were 3 groups of bikes in the parade. The first group consisted of 2 bikes revving the motors as they went by. The second group had 5 or 6 bikes and several of them were doing burnouts. The third group (Goldwingers) put on a NICE show, quiet and respectable. About 8 members of the club were able to ride in the parade. I was unable to attend, I had previous arrangements to ride the Tail of the Dragon that weekend. Seeing the Teddy bear run pictures on Facebook, it appears that Chapter B was well represented. Thanks to the folks who rode in the Teddy bear run. Deb and I and 3 other couples are headed out to the west coast for the month of August. We are all excited and looking forward to that. Deb and I have NOT been out to the states of Washington or Oregon. We are anxious to ride the coast line. We hope all is going well this summer with you all. This Chapter is like a big family and we re blessed to be part of it. Live Life, Stay safe Deb and Don 9
NEWSLETTER EDITORS JIM AND CAROL CULLER WOW! What a turnout we had, from the Chapter B Members, for the Shiloh Ox Roast; there must ve been at least 20 members there helping out. It was a very busy two hours and we had many, many customers until 10 pm. The next day was the Ox Roast Parade (it was a big one); however, we only had 4 bikes and 4 trikes. It was a nice sunny day and not too hot to ride. Many thanks to all of those that took time out from their schedules to help on Friday night and for the ones who came to the parade. Now, we re looking forward to the trip to North Carolina. We just know we will have fantastic weather as we already know the company is going to be great. SEE YOU SOON, JIM AND CAROL SUNSHINE LADY BARB HOWARD Hi Folks!! Hope everyone is doing well! The Buckeye Rally, $5 picnic Ride, Ox Roast and the Richland County Fair is behind us; before you know it, it will be that time again next year. Time seems to go faster and faster each year. Thanks to all that participated and attended. SEE YOU SOON, BARB MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT BONNIE LANTZ HELLO EVERYONE. This has been a really warn past couple of months. My garden is doing quite well but the orchard is doing nothing. Hopefully, there should be apples next year. I helped at the Shiloh Ox Roast and today at the Richland County Fair; it was my first time for both and I had a good time. My summer has been pretty boring except for when I fell in the yard and had to go to the emergency room to get 5 staples in the back of my head; that hurt. I probably should not do that again. I mostly have been working in my yard. Kind of boring! Bonnie 10
