3 ANY WEATHER ANY TIME Reprinted from the American Motorcyclist Magazine While cold temperatures and cloudy skies can try to put a damper on your riding, there s a lot to be said for experiencing the changing landscape of fall and winter on two wheels. While we don t advocate riding in truly treacherous conditions (ice and snow for example), with some common sense you can stretch your riding season out considerably even if you live in the northern U. S. Unlike summer, when you can throw on the same jacket, gloves and helmet any morning. Autumn and winter temperature swings mean you need to think before you ride. In many parts of the country, it s not uncommon to see temperature swings of 20 degrees or more from morning to afternoon. That may not matter much when the high and low are 80 and 60, but it can make an enormous difference in your comfort level when the numbers involved are say, 60 and 40. With the chilling effect of air flowing past at 65 mph, the perceived difference to exposed skin can be 30 degrees or more. Here s a simple three step program to help dull the sting of those colder temperatures. STEP 1: PRESERVE BODY HEAT Remember the last time you were at an overcrowded party? Remember how hot it got? That s a real world example of one important fact. The human body is a pretty good source of heat. So as the temperature drops, your first priority is to preserve as much of that heat as possible. Here s a few tips. Think Layers: What keeps you warm isn t only the material in the cloths you wear, it s also the air trapped inside. That s one reason why a few lighter layers are better than one heavy one for fall riding. Plus layered clothing allows you to fine tune your comfort level by adding or subtracting a layer in variable autumn temperatures. Build a Base: The stuff you wear right next to your skin is called the base layer, and it can be incredibly important in staying warm. Old school cotton provides warmth, but if you sweat, it will stay damp, and you get chilled. Synthetics, like polyester wick away moisture and give you more consistent warmth, and they adapt better when the temperature goes up. Looking for an unconventional choice? Some well traveled motorcyclists swear by silk long underwear for its combination of warmth and comfort. Get Fleeced: Remember when you were a kid and your mom dressed you in so many layers of winter cloths you could hardly move? It didn t work for throwing snowballs and it won t work for operating a motorcycle today. What you need is a light insulated layer that fits comfortably inside your riding jacket. Consider an inflatable vest, which makes maximum use of the insulating properties of trapped air. Best of all, you can adjust the level of insulation by adding or subtracting air through an inflatable tube. Adapt to Conditions: Lots of riding jackets come with liners you can zip in when the weather gets chilly. Some are just thermal vests that can leave the arms unprotected from the cold, while others have an entire inner jacket for maximum warmth. Remember though, this is the layer you will likely shed first when the sun gets high in the sky. So plan space to carry it on the bike. Get Dressed Inside: If it s chilly in your garage or the parking lot of you hotel, be sure to put most of your gear on indoors. There s a fine balance here. You want to retain indoor heat, but you don t want to seal everything up and start sweating. You might want to zip that last zipper up as you re headed out the door. Have a Glove Strategy: Some riders carry as many as four pairs of gloves on a cold weather ride, with heavy gloves, lighter gloves, glove liners and rain gloves. There s good reason to take this element seriously, Your hands are the most important interface between you and your bike. When they get cold, your ability to handle the bike safely is compromised. Cover Your Head: If it works for ninjas, it can work for you. We re talking, of course. About wearing a balaclava a thin head and face covering that allows only your eyes to show. Sure, you look funny but you ll be warmer. You can find balaclavas in motorcycle shops or outdoor stores. Just make sure the one you buy is thin enough to get your lid on. Wear a Full-face Helmet: It may seem obvious, but a full-face helmet can keep you much warmer than an open-face lid. The trade-off is that you risk fogging your face shield, so keep it cracked open while moving, and be ready to open it wide when you stop. Next month we will print the final two steps for cold weather riding. Shirley Cupcake & Gary Helbert, Rider ED. (3)
4 Hello Everyone, Well winter has finally arrived and has brought some low temperatures and our first snow. Now is a good time to look our motorcycles over and decide what parts we will need for maintenance day in the spring. Many vendors have great prices, plus if you order now, you will be sure to have what you need. We have been attending a lot of our Grand Kids Sports, so we have not seen a lot of you lately. Hope to see you at the gathering on the 23 rd. Also, now is a good time to set aside nice items, that we NO longer want, or need, for our auction coming up. Have a GREAT DAY---WE WILL----Larry and Norma Hi All, Winter has finally arrived. As I m writing this it is 15 degrees with snow on the ground. We all knew it was coming, and the warm weather would not last, but we sure enjoyed it while it was here. What a good time and great turn out we had for the Christmas Party. The Council on Aging put together a nice meal for us and, I think, we all had a fun time with the games, door prizes, and as always, just enjoying each others company. Santa, as usual, handed out lots of nice presents and was anxious to hear what we wanted for Christmas. I hope he followed up for all of you. He sure did for Bonnie and I. The Christmas Pageant in Columbus was really worth going to. If you missed it, you should put it on your list of things to do. Thanks to Jim & Donna for setting this up. The supper run to the Lyn Way was attended by 10 people that braved it through the cold snowy weather. The Chapter Team met in December and put the Ride Schedule for the year together and it is in the back of this newsletter. We have lots of varied activities listed, so look it over and make your plans. There will, I m sure, be other activities and/or events that will come up throughout the year. If there is something that you hear of that you think we might enjoy doing please bring it to our attention so we can possibly work it in. Larry & Bonnie, Editors (4)
5 Hello Everyone, Well winter has come at last. I know that many of you do not like the cold weather. I on the other hand, enjoy winter. Not just because everything that makes my eyes water and causes me to have sneezing fits is hibernating. I also love looking out the window when it is snowing it is like being in a snow globe. Looking at the snow covering the ground and it just sparkles as the sun light hits it and reminds me of the days of my youth when I would play in the snow. I would make snow angles, snowmen, and build forts in the snow. The best was going tobogganing at the big hill when we visited my grandma in town. You had to know when to stop or you would go into the town creek. Now there is an apartment building complex there called Village Green. The other place we went was at the Country Club. We would ride the toboggan for hours and then drink hot chocolate to warm up. Wow such great memories to keep me warm on cold winter days. Truth be told if I could, I would be outside playing in the snow now. Who knows I might just do that for the fun of it. Please keep all of our members who are sick or are recovering in your thoughts and prayers. If you have any items you would like put on the web site please let me know. I also want to remind you to check your memberships and renew when needed. Till next month. I will see you all down the road. Deb Wolf MED/Webmaster THANK YOU SO MUCH Thank you for all the prayers, cards, and visits to the funeral home for my sister Carolann. We appreciate all of you so much. GREAT BIG HUGS TO ALL Reda NEW FOR THE WINTER RIDING ENTHUSIAST We have all seen the Insta Trike kits that you back your Wing into and convert it into a trike. To accommodate those of you that want to continue to ride in the winter months, a new company called Insta Trak, has came out with a similar kit. Their kit has rubber tracks instead of tires mounted as out riggers. Unlike the Insta Trike where the motorcycle tire runs on the ground, the Insta Trak has a unique treadmill like unit that the tire runs on, thus putting power to the outboard mounted 12 inch wide tracks that put 24 inches of tread on the ground. This way you can ride over or through the ice and snow with ease. Another unique feature is the two handlebar mounted electronic push button controls that brake each track individually to aid in turning. For those of you that like adventure touring, an optional ski kit is available for off road, that mounts and dismounts in seconds. It comes with a trunk rack for carrying the ski when not in use. The only drawback I find with this kit is the saddle bags must be removed to keep the width of the machine within reasonable limits. If you are thinking of getting this kit for year round riding, I suggest you also read Cupcake s articles in this month and next months newsletters for the cold weather riding tips that will make your body more comfortable. These kits are now being built and the demand is so high that you must get on their waiting list. It is doubtful you will have one for this season but should arrive in plenty of time for next season. For prices and availability you can them at or call them at TRAKS (67657) (5)
