2 CHAPTER DIRECTORS Randy & Linda Porter Welcome to February Spring is coming - Not much winter and we can live with that As we know many of our Chapter members are down South or out West; Arizona and Florida; and we miss them and I hope they miss us also. We also have a few that leave soon for AZ. Our first major chapter event will be the May Mall Show, so everyone keep that in mind. We went to Cabin Fever at Deer Creek Resort in Columbus this weekend where we put on our NASCAR duds and got our motor reved up. There were table decoration (our Chapter took 3 rd place), contests, mouse trap races, euchre tournament and a lot of other events. All of it was a lot of fun. Last year was our first year to attend and I must say, I don't know what took us so long, as it was a really great, fun filled weekend. January was a little cooler but February has warmed up some, so maybe our spring will be early this year. I know I will take it if it does. Meanwhile, make sure your bike or trike is ready to ride if the weather lets you do it. Get the oil changed, tires checked, battery checked, and make sure all of your gear is ready to use and stored it its place. Things like tools, flash light, and first-aid boxes, just to name a few. If the bike or trike is ready, check yourself out. Do you have any health issues, physical or mental that need addressed prior to our spring rides. It is all safety issues that should be addressed, so we can ride safely all through the riding season. An issue has come to my attention that we need someone to help Ted Strutz, our Ohio Educator of the Year. We all know Ted is a great educator and has been doing a great job for years. But, he also works full time and is very busy at home and has asked that the position of Assistant Educator be filled. Please volunteer for this position. Ted is there to guide you through the steps, so you won't be jumping in feet first, but will have a great mentor. At our last gathering, the food was a little better and they got rid of the sausage, so that really helped. They said they thought it would continue to improve because the boss was coming to cook. So for some of you that have been concerned; please know we are working on the problem. They again apologized for things getting to where it has, but with changes and more changes in personnel due to health, etc. things went a little sour and brought them a lot of challenges. They feel they are on top of things now and things should be on the upswing. About days ago, in fact, it was the week after our January gathering; Linda had a phone call from Don Wiggins, Director of Community Relations for Flying Horse Farms. He had been logging his monthly visits, when he ran across one for a Sunday. He apologized and apologized for missing it and asked what he could do to make amends. So, she made arrangements for him to come to our February gathering on the 21 st. He promised that he would mark it on his calendar for the Friday and Saturday before, so he won't be missing it on that Sunday (evidently, they don't do much speaking on the weekends). Anyhow, it was nice to hear from them and know that it was not a miscommunication on Linda's part. (No Whoops 2

3 button there)...visit their web site at He will bring pamphlets to our gathering, as well. So, get your questions ready for him. Thanks to all who have helped make 2016 successful so far and remember to take a look at the ride schedule to see if there is any activity that you would like to assist with. All volunteers are welcome, as this is your Chapter and to keep it successful and fun, it takes everyone's help. Thought for the day: It is a funny thing about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it. 4 11. Virginia K. Robbie Kennedy CHAPTER MOTORIST AWARENESS Raymond & Ritchel Sipe One of the best ways to make motorist aware of us on our bikes so they can see us better is with lights. On the GL1500 the yellow side reflectors on the front fairing and the red reflectors on the rear saddle bags are a good choice to replace with lighted reflectors. They are not too hard to replace. Just remove the old ones and if rear just splice into the rear tail light wiring and recommend putting a female terminal on your cut wire from tail lights hot wire and a female terminal on the wire from the new saddle bag hot wire. By using push on terminals you can still remove the rear lights when changing the tire or other maintenance without resplicing the wire; Just be sure to put a little tape around them and some dielectric grease to help keep out the salt. Do the front the same way; but if you don't know which wire on the front to tie into just get out your Honda Service manual and look up something that is hot all the time or run back to the fuse box and tie in to power there. Always find a good solid ground to hook up the return wire on. On the GL1800 recommend using the original Honda accessory lights that they have available. Lights add just that little bit extra for the price that might make the motorist see you rather then run you over at the last second. 4 Raymond & Ritchel

5 NEWSLETTER EDITORS JIM & CAROL CULLER Hi Folks: So far this has been a very mild winter with very little snow. We have had only a few days of really cold temperatures and several days in the 50 s.and, February 3 rd it was as high as 60 degrees; can t complain this year. Hopefully, we won t have winter weather in June. Cabin Fever was a really good time. Chapter B had 10 members in attendance: Gail Miller, Ted & Joyce Strutz, Randy and Linda Porter, Gage, Al & Cathy Nighswander, and Jim and I. The talent/no talent show was good; there just wasn t enough of it. Chapter B won 3 rd place in the Centerpiece contest thanks to a lot of talent and a lot of hours by Cathy Nighswander helping me. The weather was fantastic and we bought gas at $ on the way home! How low will it go!!! This is always a nice relaxing weekend and a good time to see a lot of GWRRA Members that we hadn t seen for a while. Next year it is going to be held at MOHICAN STATE LODGE. Hopefully more of you will attend since it will be so close; even if it is for one day. Go and enjoy the festivities! See you at the meeting, Jim and Carol SENIOR CHAPTER EDUCATORS TED & JOYCE STRUTZ EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR 2014 is an integral part of the team! Just like you, who strive to be a competent rider, the person on the back of your bike also needs to be a competent passenger. When this task is executed well, the person on the back is truly a co-rider. They assist the rider in a safe and confident manner to bring the whole team to its destination. The co-rider Every co-rider needs to recognize the importance of performing the back seat riding task correctly. The failure to get these things right can cause anything from a minor tip-over to a major disaster for both the rider and co-rider. Riding two-up is a shared responsibility and the rider and co-rider must work together as one unit. The co-rider needs to be taught and shown what to do and what not to do. Having a two-way helmet communication system is a perfect way to verbally communicate on the bike. This eliminates the need to yell into the wind, or having to wait until slowing down or stopping to talk to each other, and is much clearer than poking, prodding, and pointing. This gives the co-rider some feeling of control over the ride experience, as well as being a second set of eyes watching for road hazards. Even with intercom communications, there still is a need for non-verbal communication between the rider and co-rider. The co-rider can use hand squeezes on the rider's waist or leg as a type of speed control or the co-rider can let the rider know that they are paying attention by squeezing on the rider's hips with their 5

6 legs. The rider can tap the co-riders leg to make sure they are paying attention and are staying awake. You have to admit that being a rider and co-rider on a bike puts you in very close quarters, so the whole experience can be quite intimate. The best co-rider is one that never distracts the rider. A good co-rider becomes one with the rider and they both become one with the bike. Taking some professional instruction with your co-rider is a great idea, and will only add to the skill set of the team. If you are thinking of taking a class to improve your street riding, ask if the school will allow you to take the class two-up. Just like any skills development, practice makes perfect, so go riding together often! On that final note, don't forget that we have rider courses coming up this spring and GWRRA does allow the courses to be taken two-up. Despite the cold weather, we had 13 members at the City Grill for our first dinner of the year and 12 members at Cheddar's for our second dinner. Hello everybody, MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT BONNIE LANTZ We are here in Arizona and having fun. Left Ohio on Jan.6 We stayed across the road from Jerry's brother for three weeks then moved north to a RV Park in Eloy. The people are very friendly here inviting us to ride with them. We didn't ride while we were near Jerry's brother because the roads were all dirt, red dirt. He said I had to clean the bike if it got dirty. There were so many cacti everywhere down there, I loved it. Here, the cactus is mowed off in so many places. We went to Pikachu Peak one day and to Sabina Canyon another day. Both places were beautiful, rocks and cactus. We went to an Ostrich farm and fed mini donkeys, deer rabbits, Lorikeets, and goats. Weather is great, kind of windy sometimes, blew the cover right off of the bike today. We were lucky somebody caught it and saved it for us. Internet is awful here so I will say goodbye for now. Bonnie BONNIE SUNSHINE LADY PHYLLIS KERR Lucy had corrective colostomy surgery on Wednesday, February 3rd, and is doing fine. The surgery took a long time and Lucy was very worn out and had bad coloring, but the doctor was very encouraging that all went well. She is in Shelby Hospital, but should be going home Sunday or Monday. She has been up walking a little, had some refreshments and is enjoying her family. Susan s sister is here from Florida and will be staying awhile. Susan and Rich are still uncertain when they will be leaving for AZ, but Rob and Lucy are adamant that they make their trip. 8 COUPLE OF THE YEAR 2016 Larry & Debbe Steinhilber Can you believe it is February already? If any of you are going to Wing Ding in Billings and need a room, we still have 5 left. We will be staying at the Best Western - Yellowstone Crossing located in Laurel, Montana about 15 miles west of Billings. Charlie & Phyllis have stayed at this motel before and said it is a good motel. The rooms are $98.99 per night ($ with tax). To book a room call (406) and tell them you are with Ohio Chapter B. Rooms can be reserved up to August 1, 2016 and can be cancelled up to 4 pm on the date of arrival. Check-in for the rooms is Aug. 30 with check-out on Sept. 4. A total of 10 rooms have been reserved by our members to date but it would be nice to see the other 5 rooms filled. Larry & Debbe Hello Chapter B members, Ride Coordinator Susan Kennedy If you read the ride schedule for this year, I hope you noticed that I am trying to put together a ride to Niagara Falls for the July 4 th weekend. (July 1 July 4) Since it is a holiday weekend, the hotel prices are going to be a bit up there. Right now I have contacted several hotels. A Days Inn so far has the cheapest rate. It is within walking distance of the falls and many other attractions including the Seneca Casino. The 3-night stay with them is $ (includes taxes and fees) if we use GWRRA hotel benefit discount. I know this is pricey but we are talking about a holiday weekend at a major attraction in the US!! It might even be possible that we stay 2 nights only at this hotel and then venture over into Canada on Sunday and the 3 rd night would be in Canada (cheaper over the boarder). Of course, if we do that you will need to have a passport. If you don t have a passport and are considering this trip, now would be a good time to go to the post office or If you are a AAA member, and start the process to get your passport. July 4 th weekend is a bit in the future, but it sure would be helpful for me to know if you are interested or have any comments or suggestions concerning this trip.
