2 Summertime is still here and the weather has been just great!! We still have a lot of riding time to work in. We hear that Davis Gibb s is still recuperating after his recent accident, and we all wish him a speedy recovery. Janice, myself,jim and Trish Thayer recently attended the 2016 NY/NJ Bi-State in Swedesboro, New Jersey. At first we were not thinking of going, but I am glad that we did. We all had a great time at the Mardi Gras and making a trip over to the Battleship New Jersey. 5 stories high and 2 decks below- a lot of walking, with very interesting history. Speaking of this trip, Janice and I, because of this trip we now have over 10,000 safe miles. With the three points that we picked up at the Bi-State, and after Janice, myself, Clark, Linda and Ryan attended Chapter D s meeting on the 11th we picked up another to add to our collection. Steve Nutting, District Director gave our chapter 2 points for helping with the Hospitality Room at the Bi-State, and he waived the 5 member rule. So Clark now advised us that we have a total of 26 points!!!! The object of the points is that it is a great way of getting all chapter members out to meet up with some friends they have not seen in awhile along with making some new ones, and just having fun! At the Bi-State dinner, Shawn Hayes surprised us along with Trish and Jim Thayer, Pam and John VanDuesen with certificates of appreciation for Chapter T and Chapter D for hosting the 2016 NY District Ride In. This recognition was really appreciated by both chapters. We are very excited that it was announced at the Bi-State that the 2017 NY/NJ Bi State Hope Lake Lodge will be hosting this event, from September 21st thru the 24th. If you are planning on going, all the rooms (I mean all the rooms) have a rate of $109.00(plus tax) with breakfast included for each nite you stay. So if you would like to stay in one of the luxury rooms, book it now! When we receive more information we will pass on to everyone. The 2017 NY District Meeting has been changed from the usual January to February 25,2017 and will be held at the Ramada Inn, in New Hartford, New York. More information to follow. Chapter W hosted a summer picnic at the home of Rick and Patty Rowles on Saturday the 27th.. Trish, Jim, Janice and I took this trip to be part of their picnic, just because. Their hospitality was more than we could ask for - Great food and Great friends. As you know Chapter W obtained the travelling plaque from us at the picnic at Linda and Clarks. It then was taken from them by Chapter H, and then Chapter U took it from them. I believe that Chapter U still has this. Congratulations to them! At our meeting I announced that Janice and I will be stepping down as Chapter T Director as of January 1st, 2017, at which time Clark and Linda have agreed to take over this position. They will be approaching chapter members to see who you would recommend as an Assistant Chapter Director, or if this is something that you would like to do, please let them know. BLOOD CLOT DANGERS, EATING TIPS, DRY BAGS AND MORE Staying healthy during long rides: checking accessories Move Often Blood clots, aka thrombophlebitis, can occur as a result of being in the same position too long. Just as you would get up from your desk regularly in your office, it's a good idea to get off the bike every one to two hours, which we know is a hard pill for some of you long distance riders to swallow. Once off the bike, be sure to take a short walk around and restore your circulation to a safe level before taking off again. A little stretching during this period can't hurt either. Eat Lightly Unless you're off-road adventure riding, multi-day touring doesn't require a significant amount of effort on the body's part. It's a great time to give your system a break and reduce your caloric intake. This will help you manage your overall health and hopefully return home without adding weight. If you're riding two up, consider splitting entrees along the way. Enjoy whole foods, such as fruits and nuts at snack time, and keep dessert to a maximum of just once a day. OEM Dry Bags Many riders add a dry bag to their gear mix for additional storage beyond standard bike luggage. Some bike manufacturers offer their own brand of dry bags. But, before you buy one, consider this: Are the bags more expensive than others offered by reputable aftermarket brands? Are they as durable, with welded seams and sturdy construction? Are the bag size and volume what you need, or does another company offer more suitable options in more than one size? Make sure you are getting the best value on the product that best suits your needs. Three-Wheel Wondering Most riders have never been on a three-wheeled machine, and many often wonder what it's like to pilot one. Whether you're thinking sidecar, trike or reverse trike (two wheels up front), handling a three-wheeled machine is not the same as riding a singletrack motorcycle. Some states offer three-wheel training courses and provide the bikes during the field training. If so, take advantage of the opportunity to get a refresher for your basic riding skills and try out the various types available before actually buying one. Date Codes On Tires It's easy enough to tell your dealer to slap a new set of tread on your bike. But, not so fast. Just how new are those "new" tires? You're the one paying the money, so you're not out of line to check the date code on the tires before they're installed. Tire tread compounds sitting on the shelf for long periods can become harder than the same tire model manufactured more recently. That can affect available traction. Most tire manufacturer's warranties cover their tires for a specified number of years from the date of purchase, as well as a certain number of years from the week the tires were manufactured. Be sure to find out from the dealer or manufacturer what terms apply to the tires you are considering. The same holds true if you're planning to buy tires on the internet. 4 Changing Oil Final Drive Oil TECH CORNER with Lester Bennett Change the oil with the final drive. at normal operating temperature to assure complete and rapid draining. 1. Place the motorcycle on its center stand on a firm, level surface. 2. Place a drain pan under the.drain bolt. 3. Remove the oil filler cap, thain bolt and sealing washer. 4. After the oil has completely drained. check that the sealing washer is in good condition. Reinstall thednun bolt with its scaling washer (or a new watther, if necessary) and tighten itto the Specif led torque: 15 lbf.ft (20 14-m, 2.0 kern) 5. Pour the drained oil into a suitable container and dispose of it in an approved manner (page 211 ). NOTICE Improper disposal of drained fluids is harmful to the environment 6. Fill the final drive with the recommended oil: 4.1 US oz (120 crni) Make sure the final drive oil level is at the lower edge of the oil filler inspection hole. 7. Installthe oil filler cap. 6 Well, by the time you get this we will be near Labor Day. This for the most part marks the end of Summer for most of us in the Northeast. As fall approaches, take into consideration the earlier sunsets and possible temperature changes that come with it. Take the needed layers of clothing for riding into the night, even if you don t plan on riding that late. Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. The deer will be getting more active as well during this time, so keep a sharp eye out for them. Taking rides later on in the month for the change of colors also includes different road conditions. The fallen leaves, wet or not, can be slippery and make for added danger on both 2 and 3 wheels. So put on your A game when you re out there. Please take note that I will be stepping down as Chapter T s Rider Educator at the end of the year. I will still be doing the news letter and I will be willing to help who ever steps up to the post next. Trish and I will still be here with you, willing & able to help out and to represent Chapter T at any of the GWRRA functions we attend. Jim Thayer 6
