. to our Chapter Directors... July/August News from Your Directors These coming months of July and August are sure to be exciting! Filled with many events/rides for Chapter members to participate in. The months of July and August have always seemed to be a time for trips as well. We are looking for someone to organize the ride once we have all the hosts. August 19 th thru 21 st Chapter X/Catskills Ride -This is a proposed overnight trip thru the Catskill Mountains to Newburgh, NY home of Chapter X! Lisa and I are looking to secure the number of interested riders and co-riders for a two night trip thru the Catskill Mountains to visit Chapter X, including a tour of the famed Motorcyclepedia Museum in Newburgh. As the saying goes, Ride Safe and Ride Often! Enjoy the prime riding weather! Stay Safe, Bill and Lisa Nickal Chapter Directors NY D

. and more from our Chapter Directors.. July is Time to Ride With the NY District Ride-In over and a big success, it is now time to put our focus on the many rides or trips we may have planned for this riding season. July has typically been the time for GWRRA members to head off to the annual Wing Ding. With Wing Ding again scheduled for September in Billings, Montana, many of us have planned trips along the east coast. Many of our Chapter team will be traveling this July and August, Lisa and I included. For this reason Lisa and I have decided to give the Chapter team a little time off to enjoy their travels. Our August newsletter will be combined with our July newsletter. We hope you enjoy and share your summer journey with us in September as a guest writer. We would also like to see your photos! Lisa and I have been planning our summer trip to Nova Scotia and the Cabot Trail. Whether it be Nova Scotia, Maine or the Outer Banks of North Carolina proper planning is critical for a safe and enjoyable trip. We have learned a lot over the years traveling in our RV. A motorcycle adventure takes much more careful planning and preparation. Everyone s travel needs will vary. Hopefully this checklist will be helpful (minus personal items) as you prepare for your own memorable road trip. Motorcycle Readiness: 1. Check tires and tread depth. Inspect the surface for foreign objects, cracks or wear. Replace tires with tread less than 2/32 or to the wear bars. Check tire pressure, valve stems for leaks and cracks. The 90-degree stems and keepers can fail. 2. Check brake fluid and other fluid levels. When was your oil and filter last changed? Proper coolant levels, air filter and spark plugs. 3. Check all lights! We like to carry a spare headlight and taillight bulb. 4. Check trailer tires, wheel bearings, hitch and lights! Your trailer is an extension of your motorcycle and should not be neglected. 5. Side stand or kickstand plate. I keep one in my left front compartment where it is easily accessible. Tie a string to it with a loop on the other end long enough to reach the left handgrip as a reminder when you leave. Trip Planning: 1. Maps - pack road maps of the area you will travel or program your GPS. I still prefer to have a few paper maps in case I choose a back road to get to our destination. 2. Emergency contacts - let family and/or close friends know your travel plans. Program their names and numbers into your phone. Leave them with contact information in case they need to contact you. 3. Itinerary - this can be as simple as your nightly stops or points of interest along your journey or as specific as miles to travel, hours/minutes of travel. Either way it can help you stay on schedule. I like to print a calendar and list each day s estimated travel time and mileage, and our destination stop for the night. We also provide a copy to our daughters before we, so they can track us down in the event of an emergency.

4. The time of year can be a factor in your travel. In the spring and fall days are shorter as the sun sets earlier and rises later than during July and August. Is it hurricane or wildfire season? Be alert of the news and weather conditions. The Internet is a good source for weather, news and mapping. We like to travel with an ipad for this. 5. When it comes to lodging, I like to make reservations ahead of time. I find it saves a lot of time and reduces stress when on the road. If you are camping be sure to inspect your gear for condition, waterproofed, and, in good operability so you are dry and rested. Emergency Items: 1. The Gold Book Don t leave home without it! Rescue Plus can also be very helpful. 2. A First-Aid kit! Each spring I always inspect my First-Aid kit to make sure it is ready for any emergency and supplies are clean. It is always on the bike whether traveling long or short rides. 3. Emergency Tire Repair kit with CO2 or 12v air compressor for roadside emergencies. Spare fuses, jumper cables for motorcycles, tool kit with a few select tools can be stored in a small pouch in a saddlebag or in your trailer. 4. Spare tube and wheel bearings for your trailer along with tools for lug nuts. 5. I like to carry an LED headlamp flash light with spare batteries for hands free operations in the dark. 6. I also recommend a spare head set cable. These seem to always fail while you are on a long trip. It can make life a lot easier if you can communicate with your co-rider or if you are riding in a group to communicate on the CB radio. Lisa and I hope this short list is helpful. Take lots of pictures, have fun and we can t wait to hear all about your trip! Be sure to friend us on Facebook as Lisa and I share our first journey outside the lower 48 and travel to what many motorcyclist claim is one of the top 5 places to ride in the world, the Cabot Trail Nova Scotia. Stay Safe, Ride Safe Bill and Lisa Nickal Chapter Director NY D Ride to Boondocks Restaurant, Lyons Falls

. to our Chapter Educator. Before we head out on our extended trip rides Your Bike: For your safety and the safety of others riding in the group - TCLOCS Tires - Check pressure (very important), tread wear and condition of tire. Rotate tire and check for any irregularities. Controls - Check brake & clutch levers for smooth operation along with the throttle. Check cables for any fraying. Lights - Check ALL of your lights, do a walk around of your bike. Oil - Check oil and fluids for levels and any leaks. Chassis - Look for any crack in the welds or paint or signs of corrosion. Side/Center Stand - Check for smooth operation, lube if necessary. Check Safety Cutout switch for proper operation (S on dash) of the Wing if in neutral when bike is running and side stand is down, bike should stall if put in gear while side stand is down. Trailers - Do a trailer check before you start pulling the trailer. Grease hubs, check lights, tires & pressure including the spare and anything else that needs checking. Remember tongue weight during loading of the trailer. Yourself & your co-rider - Remember, we need to prepare ourselves just like our bikes before a ride. Hydration, hydration, hydration - what more can I say. Check weather conditions - is there any weather fronts coming in during the ride. Dress for conditions and an potential weather that may be coming. Dress in layers. You can take off or add to layers if necessary. Attitude - arrive with a good attitude to be part of the ride team. Extra gear & equipment - Take the proper gear and equipment and extra clothing if you are planning an extended trip. Also, take snacks. Rain gear should be in the bike already. Before the start of the ride - There is more than just showing up 2 minutes before the ride leaves. Who are the Lead and Sweep(tail). They should be Certified Road Captains or experienced in leading and tailing a team ride. Review ride conduct- Staggered formation, ride your own ride and within your limits. Your actions will affect all on the ride. Explain the destination, route, pace, gas/rest stops and any road conditions that may be known. (Remember that gas stops should be determined by who has the shortest distance on a tank of gas). Full tank, Empty bladder. **Assign your Crash Scene Response positions. Waiting until something happens to assign positions is too late.

Review hand signals. Notify the ride leader of any special needs, such as, need to take meds or eat at a certain time or any medical conditions (may be allergic to bees). Above, we have TCLOCS, Rider/Co-Riders, CSR. Below we have READY: We ask our passenger if they are READY before we ride. We should also be asking ourselves if WE are READY before a ride. R > for Relaxed: Before any ride we need to make sure that we are as relaxed as possible. That means low stress level, temper is in check (ya right), our mind and heart are not racing and focused on the ride with no distractions. If you are not READY, save the ride for another time. E > for Equipped: Whether we are riding a short or long distance, we need to think twice about our riding gear. We have all heard ATGATT. Now lets think about going for that all day ride. It s warm during the day but as night falls the temp starts to go down. Did you plan on that? Probably not. It starts to rain, do you have rain gear? Keeping an extra long sleeve shirt and rain gear on the bike, would be a great idea - just in case. A > for Anticipate: Before a ride take some time to think on what you may encounter while riding and identify factors that could effect your safety and that of your passenger and others in the group. Consider the time of day, time of week and any weather coming in. Morning and late afternoon rides during the week you will encounter passenger vehicle traffic, school buses and other large types of vehicles. While on weekends, you may encounter the recreational vehicle types of traffic (you know people "getting away ) or joggers and bicyclists and other people not paying attention, because they want to get to that good fishing spot which is across 3 lanes of traffic. So take a moment or two before the ride to think "down the road" before you head out. D > for Drug and Alcohol Free: This should be a no brainer but these types of crashes are happening more often. Having a brewski should be done after the bikes are parked for the night and maybe find a restaurant that is within walking distance from your place of lodging so there is no temptation of drinking and riding the bike. Y > for Yield: This is simple, yield to other drivers (No Biggie). Many of us get angered at inconsiderate drivers (Yes i will keep it clean). If we keep a cool head, we will have the upper hand because we are scanning ahead, looking where we want to go and basically riding defensively to avoid those idiots out there that are not paying attention to what s going around them. Take a couple of minutes to complete the "personal pre-ride" checklist before you raise up the kick stand. Those of you on 3 wheels, think about this before you hit the starter button and ask yourselves, are we properly relaxed and mentally ready? Do we have the right riding gear? Are we scanning ahead for potential threats, drug and alcohol free while on the bike, and ready to yield to idiot drivers. These things will make for a more enjoyable & safer ride for you, your passenger and others in your group. Ride Safe, Ride Smart, Rick & Pam, Chapter Educators NY-D

. to our Chapter MEC... We seem to be in full swing with our riding season. Jim and & I have enjoyed going on ice cream and dinner rides and have been able to ride the bike to our gatherings. Our last ride, as of this writing was led by Rick Reardon. We headed to the Redfield area and had breakfast or lunch at "The Gathering Place. You couldn't have asked for better weather. We had 16 members and 11 bikes in all. That was a great representation of our Chapter! Thank you, Rick, for leading us on the ride. I, for one, had never seen a wooden water tower before. Please be sure to ask me before or after the meeting for some of the handle bar hangers and/or some of the bumper stickers. We also have some Chapter D sponsor cards. These are the cards you leave when visiting one of our sponsors. Even if Jim & I go to one of the sponsors by ourselves, we still leave one of the cards. That lets the sponsor know how much we appreciate their sponsoring us. For those of you who have not heard me mention this before, " My favorite thing to make for dinner is RESERVATIONS"...and it doesn't hurt if we travel in the direction of one of our sponsors! We have a couple of Saturday rides in July prior to our next meeting. There will be a "Mystery ride" being led by John VanDeusen on July 2nd. There will also be an ice cream ride to the Soda Fountain in Remsen on Saturday, July 9th. I mention these rides as someone requested that we plan some of our rides on Saturdays. There will be a pancake St Ann's Church in 8:30 AM on Monday, July 4th along with the Manlius 4th of July Parade. As always, if you're free for any of these events, why not join us for an exciting time... could be for breakfast OR for ice cream OR for an 85 mile mystery trip? Hope to see you there! Here are the links to be passed along to bikers who may wish to be a part of our Chapter D family: Free 2 week Trial Membership: Chapter D webpage: Wouldn't it be great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for 10 minutes and come out wrinkle free and 2 sizes smaller???
