. to our Chapter Director... The Last Hurrah As we turn the page on our calendars and welcome in the month of September, we d like to look back and reflect on this past summer s riding season in Central New York with Chapter D. The Great New York State Fair is in full swing, and nights are getting shorter and cooler! This fall the New York District and Chapter N will host the 2016 Ride Out at the Country Cottages & Motel, 31 Vito Road, Diamond Point, NY This will also be the Last Hurrah for the NY District Ride Out as we have known it for quite some time. The Ride Out will be from September 22 nd to the 25th in Lake George. There is still time to register (see attached flyer), but hurry, after September 4 th it will cost you $5.00 more per person to register! As we look back over the past few months, our Chapter D team has participated in many dinner rides to our sponsors, such as Tabatha s Family Tree, The Gathering Place, Tassone s, Brenda s Diner and Port Byron Diner, just to mention a few. We have participated in several ceremonial rides, such as, the Memorial Day Ride with our Combat Vets to Fort Drum and the 4 th of July Parade in the Village of Manlius. This year we have participated in a monthly Ice Cream Ride suggested by one of our members. We have also had many successful events, such as, our annual Tech Day hosted by Laurie and Brian O Brien, our Mystery Ride hosted by John and Pam Van Deusen and our Progressive Dinner Ride hosted by Bill and Julie Spencer (salad), John and Pam Van Deusen (main course), and Bill and Maria Downey (dessert). Over the course of a few months we have also scheduled a few Chapter meet and greets. The most recent being an overnight stay in Newburgh, NY, after a day of riding through the Catskill Mountains. A few of the Chapter members attended the Chapter X Gathering after a tour of the Motorcyclepedia Museum. The Sunday ride home also proved to be a bit exciting (and wet). Many of us also traveled to other areas outside NY this summer and experienced some exciting riding in other parts of the US and Canada. For Lisa and I, it has been a memorable 2016 riding season. There is much to think of as the days click down to Recently it was announced that our NY District Directors Steve and Katy Nutting, will be stepping down as NY Directors at the end of the year. Many of you may not know that Steve and Katy have been doing double duty as NY Directors and Chapter Directors for Chapter N. With no one volunteering to lead Chapter N this past January, Steve and Katy stepped up to keep the Chapter from having to dissolve. In June Trish Thayer, our amazing Membership Enhancement Coordinator, stated she will step down after 12 years of serving Chapter D. Trish has done an amazing job, a job which is extremely important to the Chapter. Trish contacts new prospective members, makes sure they feel welcome and know when our next gathering or event will take place. She greets them when they attend a gathering or event for the first time and introduces them to the Chapter Director and the membership at large. The MEC is like the welcome mat to the door into our Chapter! Her bright smile, joyful positive attitude and willingness to share a joke or two keeps us all smiling and laughing! These are just a few of the things she has done to help Lisa and myself as Chapter

Directors. Without someone volunteering to take on this task, it will leave a big hole in our Chapter team. I am asking each of you to think about asking Trish what she has done to make such a big contribution and how you can help by taking over when Trish steps down! She is willing to meet with you and discuss how you can help keep the Chapter smile. In 2017, Chapter D may be in the same situation as Chapter N was in Only I m sure Steve and Katy will not be doing double duty, nor will the new NY District Director, whomever that might be! When Lisa and I took on the Chapter Directors position in 2015, it was to avoid the possibility of the Chapter having to disband due to lack of a Director. Only after speaking with those members who supported outgoing CD Bob Makai and his team, and their willingness to continue to help, did I feel comfortable in accepting the duties associated with being Chapter D s Director. Our goal was to serve a two term limit as those who had served before us. Everyone has supported Lisa and I as Directors, but without an Assistant Director during 2015 and 2016 there appears to be no one to step up for We as a Chapter need to have a conversation on the future of this Chapter. It would not be fair to expect the current Chapter team to continue to do all the work necessary to run the Chapter. Most of these members have been Chapter Directors in the past. I cannot say thank you enough to Rick Reardon (Chapter Educator), Bill Downey (Chapter Treasurer), Trish Thayer (Chapter MEC), Bill and Julie Spencer (Chapter Newsletter and Chapter Couple), Pam Pearson (Chapter Webmaster and Facebook Admin), Laurie O Brien (Patches/Pins/Shirts), Henry Jedra/Jim Tillotson (Advertising), and Bob and Chris Makai (Sunshine Coordinators and Dash for Cash). Many have been doing these important roles for years. Without them it would be very difficult for the Chapter to operate is fast approaching! Will Chapter NY D be ready to continue or will Chapter D fade away and become a memory of what was. Is it the Last Hurrah? Stay Safe, Ride Safe Bill and Lisa Nickal Chapter Directors NY D

. to our Chapter Educator. The Road Less Traveled We try to avoid these roads but sometimes get misguided by our GPS, take a wrong turn or the paved road runs into this type of road. It s the Unpaved road with Dirt (loose or hard packed) or Gravel (loose- center track usually or hard packed). Most of us have at one time or another been on one of these types of unpaved roads. It s not the best feeling especially the loose type. Here are some tips on how to make an unpleasant feeling a little better. Things feel a bit weird underneath us with the front wheel wandering and the handle bars coming alive (you know, like a Har - oh never mind) moving without our control. With all the movement the bike is doing it is just its way of finding a suitable path forward. I think the "pucker factor" comes into play here. Trikes will also have this type of front end movement but is more stable with 3 wheels. Here are a few techniques when we find ourselves on the unpaved road surface. Stay loose, avoid fighting the bike s tendency to wander on an uneven surface. Instead loosen your grip and let the bike finds its "way". The bike doesn't want to fall but wants to keep moving forward. Keep head & eyes up, looking well ahead, the bike will follow. Avoid using the front brake. Shift your weight from your seat to your feet, boots flat on "floor boards" or boots planted on the pegs, keep knees against the tank, steer with your lower body and less with your hands, keeping upright, allowing the bike to lean beneath you in corners to maximize traction. While all of this may feel weird and uncomfortable, using these techniques will put you a bit more at ease when confronted with these types of unpaved roads. Just think of this as another Adventure or with the NY- D group - a "D" tour. Special thanks to Eric Trow, owner of "Stayin Safe" motorcycle training center for printing this article in June 2016 Rider Magazine. Ride Safe, Ride Smart Rick & Pam Chapter Educators, NY-D

. to our Chapter MEC... It's hard to believe that September is upon us already. Many of us no doubt will be heading off to the NY State Fair. Jim & I will be attending the Fair tomorrow and I'll be anxious to see the new layout. Here's hoping we don't get lost. I need not worry as Jim would be more than willing to tell me where to go! Hmmmm We, so far, have had a great riding season! Jim & I traveled down to Newburgh to visit Ch X with a few of our Chapter D members. Jim & I headed out to Rochester with another couple from Chapter T to take part in Chapter W's picnic. We have attended dinner rides, ice cream rides, barbecues, as well as, been a part of the District Ride In, the NY/NJ Bi-State Rally and are now looking forward to attending the District Ride Out. As most of you know, Jim & I are affiliated with both Chapter D & Chapter T. We are assigned to Chapter D which is based on our zip code. However, we for more than 10 years, have put our heart and soul into each of these Chapters which keeps us pretty busy at times. We are unable to attend all of the activities but we do try to show our support. That's what being a Chapter member means...showing your support... being part of the team...stepping up to the plate when there's a need. We could really use an Assistant Chapter Director. Come the end of December, I'll be stepping down as your MEC. Should any of you have an interest in helping out, why not speak with Bill & Lisa Nickal or myself? We would be willing to sit down with you and answer any questions you may have. Last month we had 5 guests from Chapter T and as always, we enjoy having them with us. We also had Conrad & Linda Taylor from Lafayette visiting us. We're hoping they'll decide to join our Chapter D family. As in the past, when summertime rolls along, we have fewer members at the gatherings and/or other events. Folks are either off camping, traveling to visit out of town families or just vacationing. No matter where some of you have been, we hope you are traveling safely and we look forward to seeing you soon! Last month I read an article at the Gathering and was asked if I would submit it as part of this month's newsletter. A friend of mine happened to see this on Facebook. I do not know who wrote the words but thought it was worth passing along the message: Long after this election is over Trump & Hillary will still be rich. Half of us will be able to claim we "won." The other half will have 4 years to say "that's why I didn't vote for." Just remember we live in a different America than they do. We have to live, work and eat with each other in OUR America. We don't get to hop on a private jet and fly away from our communities' problems. We are what makes this country what it is, NOT the President. He/ she will not stop crime in our neighborhoods, he won't stop people from stealing your identity and she will not stop anyone from shooting up our local night clubs. Hillary will not come teach your child right from wrong, but YOU can. Trump will not come to your home

and teach her math, but YOU can. WE, as a UNITED people with sound morals, values and ethics can make this country whatever we want. Vote for whomever you want, but remember WE are the ones that shape our communities, not THEM! Trish Thayer Chapter D - MEC Two things to remember in life. "Take care of your thoughts when you are alone and take care of your words when you are with people."
