3 Get Racing: The Basics To get on the track: Membership with USA BMX is required. This membership is usable at over 300 tracks in the United States. Through the membership, USA BMX provides insurance, a magazine subscription, points tracking and more. For your first time to the track, you have the option of using one of our one day free passes. All you need is a parent or guardian present. After that, a USA BMX membership is required. Memberships last for 1 calendar year and the cost is $60. Once you have a membership, options exist to ride on a race to race basis or you can buy races in groups or by the season to save money! Your Bike, Helmet and Equipment: Riders need to have a bike that allows them to safely navigate the track. Wheel size determines your class. Younger riders usually start with a 20 bike. But, depending on the frame and wheel size, a 20 can fit a rider who is 6 3 tall or 3 6. Check out our bike buying guide to get more information on selecting a bike for your rider. CNY BMX requires a full-face helmet, a long sleeve shirt, closed toe shoes, and either pants or shorts (shorts must be worn with padding that covers the shin and knee). Also, helmets must be strapp ed or snapped at all times when riding the track. As always, feel free to check with a track volunteer or coach for clarifications.
4 Racing Rules The rules of BMX are pretty straight forward. Riders load into the gate with riders matched as closely as possible to their age and ability level, collectively called their class. 20 riders start in Novice then move to Intermediate and finally Expert. Check out our points and move-up article for more information on that. Then, once the gate drops, racing is all about power, speed, technique and of course- strategy. Riders are free to move from left to right or right to left on the track in the turns or on the straights. The can move laterally as they see fit. Sometimes riders may even bump into each other a bit. Passing and maximizing your moves is a learned skills so check out our clinics given by USA BMX certified coaches. There are rules that ensure safety on the track. So let s run through the rules relating to the turns, first straight and last straight. First straight (First 30 of the track): Impeding the progress of another rider in the first 30 of the track is illegal and will result in disqualification for that lap. The 30 mark and the lanes are indicated with lines on the starting hill. Riders are allowed to move over into open space or lanes. But, the intentional cutting off of another rider in the first 30 will result in a disqualification. At CNY BMX, this call will be made by the gate starter, a starting hill official or the race official. A rider may not protest or request this call to be made. Last Straight Rule: Similar to the first straight rule, a rider must maintain a straight path out of the last turn (unless avoiding another accident in his/her path). Deliberate action to impede the progress of another rider after exiting the last turn will result in a disqualification for that lap. At CNY BMX, this call will be made by the last turn corner marshal or the race official. A rider may not protest or request this call to be made. Corners: Rider interactions in the corners will be monitored by a corner marshal or a race official. Contact is allowed in the turns. However, racing moves should be made in such a way that the rider making that move has the possibility of completing the pass. Once again, corner marshals and the race official will monitor the race in its entirety. Disqualification: In the event a disqualification, the race official and the track director conference. All factors are taken into account including rider age and experience. The decision to disqualify a rider for a lap does not eliminate that rider from competition unless the move is deemed to violate the rider code of conduct (i.e. unsportsmanlike conduct). So, a first straight violation in moto 1 means the disqualified rider may return for moto #2. In the event of a disqualification, that rider will receive the last place position for the lap in question. Any riders finishing behind the disqualified rider will move up one position to fill that vacancy. Please keep in mind, the track director, race official, corner marshals, and track volunteers are VOLUNTEERS and are to be treated with respect, as outlined in the code of conduct.

6 Bike Buying Guide So, your son or daughter is hooked on racing BMX and you want him or her to have an appropriate, safe, and reliable ride, right? Well let s start by explaining one thing: Not all bikes shops are BMX racing shops If you walk into your average bike shop, chances are you ll walk away with a wealth of information, whether it will be accurate or not depends on where you head. Most shops are well equipped to sell grandma and grandpa a beach cruiser for their winter spot in Florida, most can sell you the skinny wheeled road racer with matching spandex attire, and some can educate you on the finer points of hitting the single track at the local mountain biking area. Unfortunately, when you walk in and ask for a BMX bike at some shops, you could very well walk out with a bike designed for riding around the neighborhood, hitting the skate park, or riding at the jumps in woods in your neighborhood. In any of the above cases, that bike doesn t meet the needs of your racer. Proper selection of a race bike takes into account several factors including height and ability. Get educated before purchasing Few shops are truly educated on sizing race bikes. So, be sure to speak with one of our coaches before heading out, wallet in hand. There are many options. From used bikes that have been outgrown by our current and past racers to brand new rides at local shops. A correctly sized bike will make riding safer, more fun and of course more competitive for your little racer. With that said, keep in mind, that there is always a market for well-maintained, used bikes once they ve been outgrown. And, these bikes do a remarkably good job of holding their value.
7 Points, points, points One of the first things the first year rider hears about is points and awards. Your child will earn points for every race entered, but they go in a few different directions. After racing at CNY BMX, my points go to. Race at CNY BMX between May 14 th and July 9 th Race between July 12 th and September 13 th Race any race (including Spring Series, Summer Series or multi point races) at CNY BMX Attend a multi-point race (State Qualifier, Gold Cup, or USA BMX National) Points go towards Spring Series Awards. All 15 races count, so attendance is very important. Points will be posted at each race. Awards go to the top 10 Novice, top 10 Intermediate, top 5 Expert, top 3 Girls and top 3 Cruisers. Awards ceremony is tentatively set for July 12 th Points go towards Summer Series Awards. All 15 races count, so attendance is very important. Points will be posted at each race. Awards go to the top 10 Novice, top 10 Intermediate, top 5 Expert, top 3 Girls and top 3 Cruisers. Awards ceremony is tentatively set for September 13 th. Points go towards End of Year Awards All races count, so attendance is very important. Points will be posted at each race. Awards go to the top 10 Novice, top 10 Intermediate, top 5 Expert, top 3 Girls and top 3 Cruisers. Awards ceremony and banquet date will be announced in October. Points from CNY BMX (and any other race you attend in the state or country) also go towards your NYS District 3 Ranking. This earns you a new, smaller number on your bike for the following season. Check district points at USABMX.org. Top district point earners are also eligible for other awards from USA BMX. Check USA BMX.org. If you have any questions about points, series or higher level BMX racing, check with the track director or a coach at CNY BMX. We can help explain all the options for those ready to move beyond racing at CNY BMX.

Riders MUST move from Novice to Intermediate after 10 wins and from Intermediate to Expert after 20 more wins. The win count shown on points consists of wins from races during the 2013 & 2014 season at CNY BMX. Wins from prior seasons and wins at other tracks will increase your win count. It is the rider s responsibility upon gaining the 10 wins needed to move to Intermediate or the 20 needed to move to expert to fill out the move up form at registration after the race that moves him/her up. Notes A. For total points races (3 riders), Olympic points system is used for placing riders. 1 ST gets 1point, 2 ND gets 2 points, 3 RD gets 3 points for each round. Points are added for all 3 rounds. Lowest total points will assign the finishing place. B. In the event of combined class, the points chart for the highest class is used. For a class of Novices and Intermediates, Intermediate points are given. For Intermediates and Girls, Girls Points are given. For Intermediates and Experts, Expert points are given.

Follow track officials directions and instructions. 4. Always respect riders, parents, track officials, volunteers and spectators. 5. Give a positive high-five, handshake or say good race after each lap. Parents, Spectators and Coaches will: 1. If the rider is under 18 this warning will be issued to the rider of the parent. 2. A written warning. Once again, if the rider is under 18, this warning will be issued by the conduct council to the rider and the parent to be signed and returned before the next participated event. 3. Three event suspension. This notification will be made verbally, either in person or by phone within 24 hours of the infraction. The rider is then suspended for the next 3 regularly scheduled events. 4. One year/indefinite suspension. Any act deemed to be detrimental to the image of the track, the safety of other riders, parents, track officials, volunteers and spectators, or failure to respect and/or comply with a track official s directions or decision may result in immediate suspension at the decision of the track director. By partaking in activities at CNY BMX, I recognize that I must take responsibility for my own actions. At all times, I will adhere to these rules.
