4 Ann and Rich Bullis New York Chapter K Chapter Director's Corner Chapter K Webmaster 2018 Chapter K Couple of the Year Ann and I would like to start off by thanking Roberta & Nick for opening their home to us and hosting Chapter K's first ever chocolate and wine event. It sure was a lovely event and everyone that went had a wonderful time. We are hoping that this event can become a yearly tradition. As long as we are talking about FUN events I need to remind everyone about the Luck of the Irish event that Lois & Gary will be hosting again this year. I know that everyone that has gone to this event in the past will be going again this year. And for all those that have never attended you definitely need to attend this year. If not, you will be missing another FUN event. We will follow up in April with the annual chili cook off at our house. That is a really hot event so you need to mark your calendars so you do not miss it. I hope that all of you are getting the itch, because I know that I am. No, not that kind of an itch. The one that we get when the weather is getting nicer and we are thinking about getting our bikes and trikes ready to ride. Do not wait too long to get them ready or you will probably miss the first rides of the season. Remember that you need to get your body ready to ride as well. So shake off those stiff winter bones. You will also need to make sure that your gear is ready. Check your helmets to make sure that they are not out of date. There are many events that have been added to the calendar on our website. They are also listed on the upcoming events section of page 3 of this newsletter. Make sure to look them over and mark your calendars to participate in as many as you can. You also need to RSVP to let us know that you will be going to participate in an event. We are very excited to see that Ride In is back again this year. It will be held in the Catskills on May 3-5. We want to thank Chapter L for hosting it this year. We know how much work goes into hosting this event so please show your support and attend this event. Make sure your read the flyer and registration form for all of the details. The New York rally will be held at Tioga Downs Casino and Resort from Aug We are thinking of extending this event to explore the Finger Lakes Region since we will so close. Please make your reservations and let us know if you would like to join the others that will be exploring the Finger Lakes Region. 5 We have many overnight rides but we have no day rides. PLEASE, step up to the challenge and either put together a ride, or work with others to help put one together. I know that myself as well as some others would jump for joy to help you with the planning if you need help. It is not that difficult for you to do, so take on the challenge. And I know you will feel much better about the entire process after your plan your first ride. Do not worry about making a mistake. We have all been there and done that. Mistakes are not the worst thing in the world. A wrong turn just means, either practicing your slow speed skills or making the ride longer. Either way, at the end of the day we will all be happy that you put a ride together and even happier that we were able to be on the ride. We are presently experimenting with a group Facebook page to see if it will make our lives easier. Our group Facebook page is coming along slowly. However, with all change it will take time to get up to speed. We are still looking for somebody to step up to be the moderator of this page for the group. I have expressed many times that we will no longer be sending out separate s for everything that is going on in the chapter. All events will be posted on the website calendar as well as in the monthly newsletter. The newsletter will be sent out regularly and they will be posted on the website as well. It is the members responsibility to check and see what is going on by either going to the website, calendar or on the upcoming events section of page 3 of this newsletter. Some events will be posted on the group Facebook page at various different times for us to see if Facebook is going to work for us. If you were at the March gathering you would have had the pleasure of seeing our ACD's being honored for accepting their new position. Make sure you take a moment or two to congratulate them on their new position. The ACD's are a vital part to the success of our chapter and Ann and I are ecstatic to have them on board. They have been serving on the chapter team for about a year and doing an excellent job. It is our utmost pleasure to have them as our ACD's. 5 Back to page 1

7 Jaime Alston Ride Coordinator NY Chapter K There are many riders that haven't rode since the fall. As spring approaches we are looking forward to the warmer weather & preparing trips & rides. I got this from The Motorcycle Educational Safety Program. For many of us; the doldrums of winter, especially those in the northern latitudes, are hopefully becoming a memory (though Mother Nature has been tossing us some unwanted curves) and our minds are filled with excitement of heading out to chew up some miles on the road. While this is what we all have been waiting for there are a lot of things to consider besides firing up those cylinders before rolling down the asphalt ribbons. So with that, even though we ve discussed this information before, we ll touch on a few things that we need to always keep in mind. Environmental Conditions: Although the threat of snow & ice may be behind us we still need to keep in mind that even late spring can develop conditions that may be of risk. We still can deal with drastic temperature swings, especially when the sun goes down. Remember to prepare yourself by dressing in layers or having the gear needed for the adjustment of warmth or lack of. Heading out dressed for a 70 plus degree day can have impacts if the numbers drop to 50 or below. If you re thinking about trying to stay warm, you re not thinking about the important things like your riding. Also, weather can change quickly with rain which we all know has its effects. For those that suffer allergies, the excessive pollen that is flying around can really make your journey a bit miserable along with all the green stuff all over your bike. Road Conditions Yes winter is gone, but the lingering effects are probably more than evident. Potholes and other remnants could cause physical or riding adjustments issues we rather not deal with. With that, road repairs and construction should be on our radar at all times. Traffic may be altered by lane merges, sudden stops, barriers that limit our escape routes and more. We need to be vigilant with our situational awareness to be able to make the corrections need to avoid the conflicts of the road; this goes for other drivers as well. We need to keep in mind that our absence on the roadways can cause car drivers not to recognize us; they do not see us normally but the long period of no regular motorcycle use will diminish their mental thoughts of looking for us. 8 Motorcycle Condition: While our eagerness could have a driving (riding?) force to get out on the road, we need to make sure our bike is in prime condition to deal with the season ahead. Follow the MSF TCLOCS procedure to check things over; its far better to deal with something that may cause an issue on the road while you re at home checking it out than becoming stuck on the road, possibly in spot that is not safe or even worse, having to deal with a potential conflict because you didn t look things over. Depending on how your VTwin was stored, winter can have its effects on your bike; even if stored indoors. Tire pressures are a big thing to check, they can fluctuate as much as the temperature we deal with this time of year. Checking Ourselves: This is a big one; we need to make sure we are ready for the ride. Some of us may not have ridden for months which will definitely have an impact to our risk factor. Our skills, more than likely, are not where they were when we put our bike to rest for the winter. With that, we gained a little more time to our age. Reaction times, operational smoothness, mental awareness may be a bit rusty to start off with. As much as we may want to just go, go, go perhaps taking it easier with shorter rides in areas of lesser congestion is the way to start limit the issues of readjusting ourselves to the ride. Another reason for shorter rides to start off with is fatigue. This is one impairment that could have devastating effects and the problem is that it happens slowly and many of us do not recognize the problem until it is possibly too late. Our minds and physical aspects may not be in the best of condition when we first roll, so when we start the riding we are reusing or retraining ourselves which can be both mentally and physically fatiguing. Along with making an allowance for this with shorter rides to slowly get back into shape, take the time to make additional stops for breaks to stretch, hydrate ourselves and just a simple breather from the thinking and moving. Finally, if you haven t taken a rider course in a long while or even at all, now may be a good time to attend one to gain the information we need to be more proficient of a rider. Yes we re back and it s always a great time of year for us but we always need to reflect on the risks that we need to deal with to keep our riding safer. While it s easy for us to blame others for a lot of headaches we deal with while riding, we need to always look at ourselves to make sure we are at the best ability we can be to enjoy the riding we love so much. It will be some time April 13th in Deer Park. All details have been finalized and the class is set. We will have 12 spots. Spots will only be held after your $50 fee is received.
