I m watching the weather forecaster on TV tonight saying that the first week in May will be in the 70 s and 80 s! We can only hope! We have had the bike out a few times; rode it to the District Meeting on April 14th in Clearfield. It wasn t far, but it was nice to be on the bike again! We canceled the ride to Murraysville because of forecasted rain and cool weather. According to M.J. Lijewski - who attended the biker blessing - traveled there in her pickup. She reported that the weather was very nice there! th We got to ride the bike on Monday night, April 23. The Meet & Eat schedule is up and going; we had a nice time at Luigi s on April 12th. Afterward, everyone went to Dr. Dolittle s Roadside Café & Creamery for ice cream! The next Meet n Eat is at Our Hometown Restaurant on East Main Street in Reynoldsville on April 26th. There was a good turn out at the April gathering; some of our snowbirds back and joined us. Welcome home! The Marble Game started over in April with no winner so the pot is building up again. The Pennsylvania District Rally is May 17th,18th, and 19th in Uniontown, PA. The last day for pre-registration is May 4th. You can also stop by the rally and purchase a day pass. PA District Directors It sure has been a crazy spring. Is the sun going to shine, or is it going to snow? Erie would like to get one more inch of snow to break the record and reach 200 of snow for the season. Did you enjoy your two days of spring in April? Oh yeah! Many of you were at the Officer Conference in Clearfield. It was great to see bikes in the parking lot. Thank you to everyone that attended; we hope you learnt something from the presenters - your District Team - and that you enjoyed the day. We know it was a lot of information to absorb in a short time frame. If you have any questions please feel free to ask us or anyone from your District Team. It s May! Do you know that our PA District Rally will be in Uniontown, May th -19 th at the Park Inn? The last day for registration is May 4 th. If you did not register, come to the rally and purchase a day pass, and enjoy a day at the rally! We have about 20 vendors, many of them new to the PA Rally. Please remember to support them, especially if you want them to return another year. Our University Coordinators and Rider Education program have many classes for you to attend. Thursday s entertainment is Elvis Tribute Artist, Robert Keefer from Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Hopefully, by the time you are reading the PA District newsletter, the schedule for the rally will be out on PEDS and available on the district website. With summer just around the corner, we hope you are making plans to visit the other chapters in the district. Go to a gathering or one of the many FUN events planned! Check out the events calendar on the front page of the newsletter or go visit the district website. Also, the District Ride Coordinator is working on a couple of ride-ins using both sides of the state. Those announcements will be coming out soon! We encourage you to accept the challenge to make the commitment, learn the skills, and apply what you learn so that you can make motorcycling safer, increase your riding skills, and make other drivers more aware of motorcycles. Assistant Chapter Directors Pennsylvania Couple of the Year Roll For The Dough Coordinators We have been reflecting on our years in GWRRA; the things that have changed and those that have remained the same. When we joined the organization in 2001, nearly everyone at PA-I was on two wheels; there was only one trike in our chapter. Now it s reversed; there are mostly trikes and a few bikes. Not many women drove the bikes then, they were mainly co-riders except for a select few. Now there are many women driving both two and three wheels. Chapter Directors, with a few exceptions, were male. Now we have many women stepping into this role and filling other positions as well. State Rallies have changed dramatically. Our numbers have dropped from the thousands to the hundreds. Vendor participation has also dropped drastically. Rallies, as we know them, are much smaller in scale but still great fun. Smaller size makes it a little more intimate. Gathering attendance has gone up and down; people come and people go. Some things, however, have not changed. We still give hugs, love to laugh, ride, and eat ice cream. Above all, that feeling of family that is such a large part of this organization is not 4

Over the last few months, I have been writing about the Rider Education Database. After a basic introduction, I explained how to access it and read the information about your record. Then, we discussed the GWRRA Levels program, its importance, and the training required to advance through the levels. Once you reach Level IV the Master Level you may think that you have reached the epitome of safety and that you are done; no more courses or training. I d like you to know that you are not finished. The Masters Level has levels within itself. You have worked hard to achieve the Master Level, setting an example for your peers to be amazed by, and providing a model for them to follow. Once you have achieved the Master Level, consider continuing the path of motorcycling safety excellence by attaining the titles of Senior Master, Grand Master, and Life Grand Master. These achievements are awarded in five-year increments. For example: Senior Master awarded five years from date that the Master Level was achieved Grand Master awarded ten years from the date that the Master Level was achieved. Life Grand Master awarded 15 years from the date that the Master Level was achieved. How does someone continue to climb the Master Level ladder? Maintain a current staus in all of the training that is required for the earlier levels. That is to say Riding course for the rider (driver) every three (3) years Co-rider course for the co-rider every three (3) years CPR/First Aid certification every two (2) years Note: The five years of time between levels refers to time while current. So, any time when the rider or co-rider is not current in his or her training or is not a member of GWRRA (because membership is not renewed) extends the time required to reach the next level of the Master Level program. 7 I have heard a few comments from people who don t believe that the requirement to stay current are not spelled out clearly enough. My response is this: Attaining the highest level of safety is of the utmost importance. Furthermore, it is becoming increasingly difficult to expand one s horizons within our organization without current certifications in the Levels program. For instance, all trainers and instructors of the Rider Courses, Seminars, as well as the Modules must be current in their training to certify and recertify. You may also be aware that some of the new officer positions require a current standing in rider education. The bottom line: If you want to be more involved if you want to become an officer you must be current in the Rider Education Levels program. Do what is right Stay current! 9 Gary Schill... Advertising Coordinator/Webmaster Has Spring Forgotten Us? Well, what can I say? I think the picture in the left column says it all. Yep, that seer of seers and prognosticator of all prognosticators has well lied through his sharp little teeth this year. Old furry Phil predicted that we would have six more weeks of winter; as of about April 18, about 29 - yes, twenty-nine - days (almost another whole month) has passed since the official first day of Spring, and still we wait for it. I think after this year, Phil should be renamed Punxsutawney Phail, with an A (Beatles reference) because he surely failed this year in the prediction. With all the groundhog fun aside, is there something that his failure might mean to us motorcyclists? Sure there is. I noticed this year that when the temperatures crept into the 40 s, I could almost hear the road crews say, Okay, Spring s here. Let s clean up the roads, sweep off the anti-skid. Within the next day or two, we would wake up to more snow on the ground. This must have must have happened at least a few times now. I m sure PennDOT and the local road crews were saying, Just let it go until we re sure it s finally done snowing. At the time of this writing, the forecast is predicting temps to remain in the mid- to upper-50 s or maybe into the 60 s for at least a week. So maybe - just maybe - this time it is pretty much over. Now back to my original thought of what this late Spring might mean to us bikers. With the long, drawn out winter, and subsequent delays in starting road clean up and repairs, the pavement may be in rough shape for longer than usual. The warm days will come soon (I hope), we ll jump on our bikes as soon as we can, and off riding we will go. Keep in mind, that as I mentioned, the roads may not be the best shape. Secondary roads in particular, may still have antiskid that sneaks up on you - especially in turns. In my limited travels, I ve noticed the edges of the roads are cracked and broken away in several areas. Then there are the potholes just waiting to send us over the bars, or at least exact some wear and tear on our bikes, breaking wheels or blowing tires. In last month s article, I suggested that you should make sure all your protective equipment is up to par. This article is intended to make sure your road observation is up to par, and you are watching for what we all want to avoid - a bad start to this riding season. So, make sure your equipment (helmets, pants, gloves, jackets, etc.) are in good shape. Insure that your bike is thoroughly checked out and safe. Finally, keep your eyes peeled for those bad sections of road. Spring is a time when the animals are happy to see the nicer weather too. Keep an eye out for Bambie, groundhogs (although I might run over one of those...if it wouldn t wreck me), and any other critters that could put a hurt on you or your bike. Safe riding!
