2 MD H Spaghetti/Bingo on February 20, MD A Bowl-a-Thon on March 7, Important notice about the PA Rally. From Tom & Renee Wasluck, PA District Directors. Hello Everyone; We have received many registrations for the rally up to this date. There has been one problem that we would like you to communicate to the membership. We must receive the completed registration with everyone signing the form at the bottom. Most of the registrations that have been sent in, have the bottom of the form cut off. To save time when picking up your packets at the rally please make sure that the "hold harmless" clause is signed. We will have a list of the members that have sent in the form not signed and they will be required to sign new registration forms before they are given their packet to enter the rally. We appreciate your help with getting this information to your members.

3 Denny and Kathy Brillhart Greetings!! Boy do I have Spring Fever. The weather these last couple days has me looking forward to this season s rides. But even though February was cold, we ve been a busy Chapter. We ve been out Rolling for the Dough and are currently the lead Chapter. So we need to keep the visitations going. As in the past couple of years, the Spaghetti/Bingo was a good time and provided some great desserts for our Chapter bowling party the following day. Chapters C and K joined us for the bowling party. Larry & Dee kept everyone guessing what was going to bring a candy treat their way. The next time you see Linda Dice, congratulate her on her 300 game. It was amazing and without even throwing a ball the whole game. Afterwards we went to the Old Country Buffet for dinner and lots of good conversation. The MD Bowl-a-Thon was a different format this year and we have been dethroned. Duckpin bowling is somewhat of a challenge. We had 11 compete. Bob Beard had a high game of 127 and high series of 309. Boy did some of us get off to a rocky start. Afterwards, we went to the Olive Grove for supper and had wonderful crab cakes. Congratulations to Barry and Rhonda for completing the new Officer Certification Program. Kathy and I will be attending this class in the near future as will Mike and Shirley. Anyone in the Chapter is eligible to attend one of the Officer Certification Programs as they like. We encourage all of you to learn more about GWRRA. As they logo says, Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge. We already have the fun and safety down. John Steele, Chapter Educator Ride Safe and Enjoy When this picture was taken it was 12 deg. F. and a little windy. 5 layers on top and 5 layers on the bottom with battery heaters and heat packs wherever possible. I thought it would be good dress for winter riding. While winter riding may not be a good thing, winter is a good time for checking your first aid kit. The first time someone grabs your first aid kit on a ride, it may be for you. The first time I saw road rash was while we were riding escort for a MS 150 bicycle ride. A gentleman had gone over the handlebars on a paved road. It was not a pretty sight. I m sure you EMS people have seen much worse, but it was enough for me. I gained a whole new view of first aid kits for motorcycles. Most common kits are good for picnic problems, but band-aids and aspirin may not help in case of a motorcycle accident. For starters you should have a really good pair of scissors to cut away thick clothing. If you can t see the injury you can t treat it. I hope everyone carries latex gloves in case there is blood. Change them every year. You wouldn t want your fingers to poke through an old pair of gloves. Two or three triangle bandages should be in your kit. They can make a sling, be folded and used as a pressure bandage, hold other bandages in place, etc. They are the most versatile item you can have with you. About 30 inches by 30 inches is a good size and they can be made from unbleached muslin. Few small kits have sufficient, large gauze pads most do not have any. If you need a pressure bandage, you will probably need quite a few. It is also helpful to have a bottle of filtered or distilled water with you. This is useful for broken bones (compound), eye injuries, washing gravel out of road rash and so forth. One last thought. Really old stuff in any first aid kit is not good. Make sure you have what you may need and that what you have is current.

5 February has been a busy month & March looks just a busy. It s so nice to see grass again and the snow starting to disappear. We went and visited Chapter B unfortunately we didn t have enough members to get our picture taken for the Roll for Dough. We need to have 6 members to participate to get our points, but it s also fun to visit our neighboring Chapters, so let s Roll for the Dough The annual MD Chapter H was a huge success. We had roughly 26 members attend. We all had fun and enjoyed the company of all our members and the surrounding chapters. The best part of it all was the members donating money for the betting on all the desserts. Mike did a good job. We bet on and won a Pineapple Upside Down Cake, a German Chocolate cake, & Fudge made by our own Dee Craig. WOW!!!!!! It was good. The next day was our Chapter Bowling Party, so we had plenty of desserts to share with everyone. There are a lot of events coming up in March, so let s support our Chapter and enjoy the ride. Let s not forget to sign up for the meet & eat on March 27 th. I will need a head count by the 24 th. Check out the Website and sign up. Mike & I want to thank the staff and members for their support and effort to make PA-V a great Chapter. I hope everyone had a safe winter and hope to see all our members at the gathering, rides and events for the new season. I know a lot of us are ready to get out and ride. So let s get your bikes in top form and be safe. Mike & Shirley Prince Ron McGee Hello to all, hope you are not too uptight about the weather. It will break, and when it does, we all need to be ready to ride. If you do ride now, please be safe. Well I think we have a great group, and as always we are looking to keep those members we have and pick up new ones also. If you know anyone who rides and who fit in, invite them to join us on a ride, or come to a gathering. The family we have will surely make them feel comfortable and POW another new member. If anyone has ideas on what we can do to get some of our former members back, let me know. I am hoping that by the end of this year, we are downstairs in the big room for our gatherings. Not a bad thing at all. I think we are about there now. Now for the BIKE show: I have contacted the PA State Police about them having a police bike there with info on motorcycle awareness, and as of now it looks like that is a go. We have room for 35 to 50 bikes, so let s make it worth the time. I would like to have some input on this next part. How do you all feel about having venders at the show? I was thinking about having our advertisers as our venders. One way we can say thanks for supporting us. There would be no charge for them to be there, just a thanks from us. I really would like to know what you think. Let me know, rpmcgee@hughes.net. If anyone would like to help with the advertising, let me know, I have some ideas, and maybe your ideas are better. So please speak up, the more the better. BE SAFE and HAVE FUN!!!! Barry & Rhonda Blyler It would be safe to say that everyone is ready for spring! Of course that also means Riding Season! I did attend the planning meeting for our Chapter rides & we have covered most all of Pennsylvania as well as surrounding states as well. Take a look at the calendar on our Web site and you will agree quickly. On March 6 & 7 Rhonda & I attended the former Horizons Training now known as Officer Certification Class in Chambersburg. It was Very Informative in regards to GWRRA operating procedure as well as many items. We wanted to learn more about GWRRA. At the end of the class we did get our certificate to show that we are Certified Officers with GWRRA. This is a must class to attend for anyone who plans to go forward with GWRRA. There will be more class locations in the near future. I had the chance to also attend Chapter B Gathering in Lancaster. We only a total of 4 chapter members go, so we could not Roll the Dough but we had a nice time. They are an Active Chapter with many things on their schedule from rides to fund raisers. Perhaps our Chapter can join them for an event this summer? The riding season will be in full swing very soon. So what are your Responsibilities as a Motorcyclist? 1. Visibility - BE SEEN!!! 2. Positioning 3. Protective Gear 4. Lights 5. Eye Contact 6. "Ride As If You Are Invisible" 7. Skill Level 8. Maintenance 9. Attitude 10. Alcohol Free Now take a look at Motorist's Responsibilities: 1. Accept 2. Look 3. Expect 4. Care at Intersections 5. Understand Think about the list I mentioned. Are you doing all of these as a Motorcycle Rider or a Motorist? I would like to thank everyone for all the cards, phone calls and visits during my recovery from my appendicitis operation. It s so nice to have such a caring extended family. Thank You Deb Etter

Here are a few operational and maintenance tips that may help us tow safely and enjoy the extra space provided by our trailers. A special Thank you to Billie Savage for all the years as the Sunshine Coordinator. We see how good you are. We don t have to look very far. Both night and day, You ve given of your time, To make Chapter V a better place. Everyone here has benefitted. We send this note to tell you That we are aware and all agree, Your gifts of time large or small are special ones indeed. May God Bless you and Gary and keep you safe in your travels. Brenda Milberry March 26 Al Nowicki March 26 Holly Moul March 29 Donna McGee April 5 Neal Elliot April 9 Gail Elliot April 10 Greg & Bev Redding March Allow at least 1/3 additional braking distance when towing a trailer. 2. Slow down and take it easy in turns. The extra weight of the trailer can push the back of your bike if you hit a slippery spot in the turn. 3. Never overload your trailer or your trailer hitch (check the capacity of your hitch and trailer). 4. Balance the load in your trailer to give sufficient tongue weight to avoid swaying, without overloading your hitch or causing your bike to sag. Usually 20-30lb. of tongue weight is sufficient (again check the recommendation listed for your hitch and trailer). 5. Check the tire pressures of both your bike and trailer. Soft tires on your bike will cause poor handling with the extra weight of the trailer. Too much air in the trailer tires will cause it to bounce and hop. Since motorcycle trailers are light in weight compared to a utility trailer using the same tire, you do not need as much tire pressure. My 22 cu. ft. Cycle Mate with 4.80 x 8 tires only calls for 22-25psi. 6. Check your trailer hitch mounting bolts, trailer coupler bolts, lug nuts, trailer ball etc. regularly. Also check the trailers wheel bearings and repack them when needed. 7. Make sure you properly attach your safety chains. They should be long enough to allow tight turns without binding, but should not drag on the road. The chains should cross under the coupler (the right chain goes to the left side of your hitch and the left chain goes to the right side of the hitch). This is done to prevent the trailer tongue from dropping to the road if the coupler fails. 8. Always install a lock or safety pin on your trailer coupler to prevent accidental release of the coupler. 9. Check your trailer lights after you hook up your trailer to make sure they are operating properly. 10. Allow extra room for the additional length of your bike and trailer when making tight turns, maneuvering around gas pumps or when completing a pass on the highway. It is easy to forget that you have the extra length of the trailer behind you.

9 Bruce & Deb Etter Summer is coming and we would like to try and get together an order for the PURPLE POLO SHIRTS. There is a 12 shirt minimum order required. They are short sleeve with Chapter V logo embroidered on the front left chest ONLY and your name on the right side. S XL = $20.00 each 2X 3X = $21.00 each Prepayment is required, via cash or check made payable to Deb Etter. You may also call Bruce & Deb Etter (717) or us at bndetter@yahoo.com. The Roll for the Dough seems to be working very well. In our visitations we have observed several chapters visiting others. I think this is a great way to meet old friends and make new ones. We attended Chapter V s bowling challenge on Sunday, February 21st in York. Although bowling is not one of our favorite pastimes we thought we would give it a try. There also were members from chapter C and chapter K in attendance. Linda even bowled a perfect 300 game on the last game. Not sure how that was accomplished because she did not roll one ball??? I think we have a chapter V member to thank for that? We want to remember to thank all of our chapters for their gracious hospitality and warmth when to visit. Looking forward to all the activities that will be coming up with the warm weather that is hopefully on its way. Larry & Linda Dice It s hard to believe that February is here and gone. Mother Nature sure made us aware that winter is still around. The last weekend in February she dumped 18 + of snow here in Mountain Top. Unless it gets warm soon we will be looking at white for a while longer. We are thinking SPRING! At any rate, Daylight Savings Time arrives on March 14, 2010 and spring is right around the corner, so let s get ready to ride. Make sure your bike/trike is ready to go, do that maintenance now. Also, make sure you and your co-rider are ready both physically and mentally. The 2010 Keystone State Convention will once again be held in Johnstown. The dates of the convention will be August 26, 27, 28. Pennsylvania will be hosting the Region Couple of the Year Selection. This year s theme will be A Carnival of Wings. There is one major change in Friday s line up. Friday night, we are bringing back the talent show. Miguel Lebron & Gracie Tirado, the District Couple will be in charge of this event. If you would like to entertain the membership, or simply show off your talents, please contact them at gwrra.pa.districcouple2010@gmail.com PLEASE REMEMBER, WE ARE ALL ADULTS. IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENED THEN MAYBE YOU SHOULD NOT ATTEND THE TALENT SHOW. We must have received all full registrations by August 20th. There will be no full registrations or banquet passes sold at the convention. There has been added a Saturday DAY PASS including the banquet for $35 as long as it is received by the August 20th date. This has been done for the members that maybe only can come to the convention on Saturday but don t because they cannot come to the banquet that night. We would like to see more participation in the events so we are going to allow day passes to compete with their chapters during the Friday morning events. Day passes will be allowed to participate in the Light Parade on Thursday evening. Day Passes will not be permitted to the Thursday evening dinner, Friday ice cream social and talent show or the banquet on Saturday unless they have purchased the special Saturday day pass before the August 20th date. Tom and Renee Wasluck PA District Directors There is starting to be a buzz again within GWRRA. The buzz I am talking about is on the Officer Certification Program and the articles coming from Home Office. Fortunately, most of it is posi2ve. The rest of it I think is a misunderstanding. People forget that there is more to good communication than the words being used. We all have our own filters that make us react to what we read or hear. I want to assure you that at the Home Office we are doing everything we can for the best interest of the Membership and to ultimately make our volunteers responsibilities easier. We have realized that there is a lot of misinformation out there, and we are working hard to correct that. For example, Ed s article last month mentioned charity beginning at home and helping current members with their membership. Some people came back to us thinking we were telling them not to help to help their local charities, and that we only wanted the current Members helped with their membership to benefit us. That was never a thought in Ed s mind or anybody s mind here at the Home Office. Yes, we are a business, but firstly we are caring people who just try to help in any way we can. It was just a suggestion, not a mandate. We will share many ideas with you through the Newsletter or magazine just to get your minds thinking. That s how many problems are solved and even some of the best ideas come to fruition. So before you react, take a few moments to think about your day, mood, your situation, and know that things that are said by the Home Office have the best of intentions behind them. This isn t just a job for any of us. We truly love this Association from the bottom of our hearts. As much as we are working on training the Volunteer Officers to be able to better assist you, the membership, we are training staff here as well. We will all be going through the Officer Certification Program and cross training throughout other departments so you have the best trained team here to help you. Let s all work together to improve the relationships we have and to create new ones. Always remember to enjoy the ride and Building Relationships is our theme for 2010!!
