Wings in the Wilds them when they returned. It was sometime in August when I called and Dave Marconi answered and invited us to ride to St Marys and he would tell us about Chapter I. Chapter Directors Mel & Jodi Lufsey I write this article on a Friday morning, the day of our November Gathering. The temperature outside is 18 degrees and I have traveled over snow covered roads much too early in the season even for me. I am at a point in my life, as I am soon to be 63 that I am immune to winter travel. I still don t look forward to it and I truly understand why folks migrate south to avoid it. I usually write after our monthly Gatherings and talk about the things that happened during that event. I have decided not do that in this article as this is my last article as your Chapter Director. I have been writing articles for six years now and I never have trouble finding things to write about. I think this article should be dedicated to how I have arrived to this point in my life. I bought my Goldwing in October of It was ten years old and had 44,540 miles on it. I rode for a couple of years and then joined GWRRA in September of In the July of 2007 I was driving my semi into the TA truck stop in Brookville as several very beautiful Goldwings pulling trailers were leaving. Later that day, I was at a picnic when a lady saw my Goldwing and told me she had friends that left that morning for a long trip west with a lot of other Goldwing friends. I made her tell me their names and ask her for a phone number to contact We did and he invited us to come the next day to ride in the Weedville Parade to meet everyone. I met George Simcox that day, as he noticed I was having trouble finding neutral every time I stopped, and gave a suggestion how to repair the problem. I did that repair and it still works fine. We began coming to Fat Man s in Reynoldsville for the Gatherings and we participated in many of the rides in Dana and Danise were Chapter Directors and Tom and Lois Conner were the ACD s. They led rides along with Gary VanLeer and Dave Reams. We made a lot of friends that year and at the end of 2008, we decided to become the new ACD s serving with Tom and Lois Conner as Directors beginning in In the summer of 2008, Gary VanLeer led a ride to Mackinaw Island and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We then went to the last Honda Homecoming in Ohio where Gary let me lead that portion of the ride. Needless to say I managed to lose Randy & Laura Zimmerman and George and Kathie Simcox who were tail gunning the ride. Thanks to cell phones we got them back and I learned from that experience. In April of 2009 Jodi and I took a Horizon Class that Dana coordinated as he was Assistant District Director along with others serving with Chuck Stone as District Director. Jodi and I made a lot of new friends, as all present have served as Directors of their appropriate chapters and are still our friends. In May, Tom coordinated a Mall show and thus began the 2009 riding season.

In 2010, I finally got to take that much anticipated ride west as Dana led a very large group of us on a 16 day ride that Jodi and I will cherish forever. In September of 2011 on a ride led by Gary VanLeer to West Virginia I ask Pam Crissman if she and Bill would be our ACD s. After much thought, she accepted and in 2012 Jodi and I began our term as your Directors. In 2012, like Tom, we began the riding season with a Mall Show and the rest is history. My Goldwing is 20 years old now and has 119,757 miles on it. We have seen our Gathering location go from Fat Man s in Reynoldsville, to Plyler s in Brookville, back to Fat Man s, then to Eat n Park in Dubois. In late 2012 we moved the Gatherings to Hoss s in Dubois where we are presently. This position as your Directors has been very challenging and we have enjoyed serving you. Jodi and I thank you for all your support and we especially thank all who have been part of the Chapter I Staff. By the time you read this you will still have time to reserve for our Chapter Christmas Dinner which is our last event as your Directors. We hope you will join us and enjoy the special guest we have asked to entertain you. Take Care All Mel & Jodi SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! The advertisements in this newsletter have been purchased by businesses that support our chapter. We encourage you to thank them by giving them your business when possible. Be sure to tell them that you saw their ads in the PA Chapter I newsletter! Assistant Chapter Directors Pam & Bill Crissman Hello All, We are very blessed to be able to live in a country where our freedoms are so great. Thank you to all who have given so much to allow us this freedom. I hope everyone had a chance to spend quality time with family and friends over this Thanksgiving holiday. A big thank you to Gary and Carol for letting Chapter I use the top of their garage for our annual harvest dinner and ride schedule meeting. The meal was very good as usual, thanks to all who helped to make it a great time. We had at least 58 members attend and give us some very good ideas for the 2015 ride season. Congratulations to Nancy, who won the marble game at the November gathering. She drew the white marble the first time and won the $ We will be starting the game in January Will it go again for the entire year? Please attend the Anniversary party in January and be a part of the new game. When you get this newsletter we will have already had the Christmas parade and greeted Santa for another Christmas season. Christmas is only a few weeks away and everyone I m sure has started preparing for Christmas Day. If this Christmas holiday season finds you traveling please be safe. Bill and I would like to take this time to wish you and yours a very Blessed and Merry Christmas. Be safe, have fun, and learn something new, Bill and Pam Crissman

Chapter Educators Lori & Gary Schill Learn Something New! Submitted by: Lori Norris Schill, Chapter Educator At the November gathering, we distributed a three-page sheet of seminars. Perhaps that was a bit overwhelming. Here s a shorter list. If you would consider attending, write your name in the YES! column. Then number those (with 1 being most important) under RANK? I d really love to bring some of these seminars to PA-I, but I need to know what interests you the most. Complete this task and return the form to me at an upcoming event. 5 Couple Of the Year Coordinators Hi Everyone, Ray & Doreen Snyder As I am sitting here and starting to write this article for the newsletter, it is the last Monday of November and yesterday was beautiful with temperatures in the 50 s. It would have been a good day to ride the bike, but there was so much antiskid on the roads. November 8 th was the Thanksgiving Dinner and Ride Meeting at Gary and Carol Doverspike s home. It was a wonderful evening of eating delicious food and visiting with friends, talking about plans of rides for next year. The next event was the Gathering on November 21 at Hoss s. There were only a few empty seats left in the room. Congratulations Nancy Knarr. She is one Lucky Ducky who found the white marble. It is now Tuesday evening, we picked up our Air Force son, Jonathan at the DuBois Airport late last night. He is home for 3 weeks! Yippee! He will be able to come with us to the Christmas Party! It was 45 degrees today, but is to start getting colder tomorrow with some snow possible. It is hard to believe this Thursday is Thanksgiving! There are so many things that I am thankful for which includes all of you! Hope that you have a wonderful Thanksgiving! We wish you a Merry Christmas! Hope to see you at the Christmas Party! Take Care! Doreen & Ray

Dana & Danise Hartle Former PA District Directors Just a Note Before I Go". Crosby, Stills and Nash sang a song titled "Just a Song Before I Go". I thought I would steal a part of it with a minor modification. I am titling this article "Just a Note Before I Go". The lyrics would be "just a note before I go, to whom it may concern". Danise and I wish to thank all of you for giving us the opportunity to serve as your District Directors. It has been a pleasure working on your behalf in an attempt to provide you a positive experience as a member of GWRRA. We hope that we made at least a small difference in a good way to you during our time in office. We are leaving the title behind but will be seeing you as we travel the state enjoying what GWRRA has to offer. We are not saying "goodbye" but are saying "see you soon". We want to use this last opportunity to pen a message of encouragement; engage with your Chapter and be part of the fun of riding your motorcycle with a group of like minded people. We encourage members to take an active role in the health of your Chapter. Everyone has a role in making a Chapter better, so step up and grab an opportunity to make a difference. It can be as easy as befriending a new member to accepting a leadership position. Everyone influences the Chapter. We want you to be a positive influence and not a "Debbie Downer". Enjoy the positive parts of being a member and don't focus on the little things that may not be the way you would like. In other words, enjoy the good part of the meal and push the Brussel sprouts under the plate. (I know some of you love Brussels sprouts but I needed to pick something that many don't like to make my point. :) ) There is an old saying "Everyone brings happiness into a room. Some when they enter... others when they leave." We encourage you to be the person who brings the positive energy to your Chapter! We wish you the happiest of Christmas's this year and hope that 2015 brings you good health and great fun. From our home to yours, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Dana & Danise Have you enrolled in the GWRRA Levels Program? Contact the Chapter Educator to enroll now! Are you current in the Levels Program? Check your status on the Rider Education page at: Click on My R.E. Information and log in to see where you stand. Chapter I is planning to arrange for educational opportunities over the winter months. Watch for announcements here and in your inbox! We encourage you to accept the challenge to make the commitment, learn the skills, and apply what you learn so that you can make motorcycling safer, increase your riding skills, and make other drivers more aware of motorcycles! Safety doesn t happen by accident!

Advertising Coordinators Gary & Lori Schill Bygone Bikes By Gary Schill any of us have been motorcycling for years now, and have probably had several bikes under our ownership throughout the years. We could have also wished we would have had several others, but usually just couldn t afford it, or had other things that had to take precedence. I don t know about you, but I also enjoy looking back to bikes of the past and read about what was the bleeding edge back then, but now is quite outdated. I plan on doing a brief article looking back on a street bike, and a dirt bike, with each article as many of us have started out on dirt bikes when we were younger. I also plan on doing just the complete opposite for some articles that I will publish on future issues of the Biker King newsletter, about for example, some brands that were long thought to be no longer manufactured that are now making or have made a big comeback, but some yet not largely or even at all available in the USA. There will also be some articles on much less known brands of today. So stay tuned for Bygone Bikes of the past here in the Chapter I newsletter, and Bikes of the Present and Future in Biker King online newsletters. If you wish to read any of the Biker King articles, just Like the Biker King Facebook page. The availability of the newsletters will be announced as they are available and at no cost. For this article, I will do a past street bike. Others may have both a street and dirt model. This comes from a 1970 Cycle World magazine, the first one I ever bought, and still have. This was the Suzuki 500 Titan, labeled in that article as Suzuki s entry in the Superbike field that just happens to be an excellent touring bike. From the picture below, you can see this was a far cry from the touring bikes of today, save for the 74 inch Harleys with saddle bags and trip trunk, but was Suzuki s finest at the time for both performance and touring (see the tank bag mount?). It was a 500cc two-stroke (remember those?) twin that the skeptics said could not be built. They thought for sure it was impossible to have two cylinders this size this close together without having overheating problems. But metallurgy and The 1970 Suzuki 500 Titan Then known as a Superbike and excellent touring bike. Suzuki s can do attitude thought otherwise, and the 500 Titan became reality. The Titan was considered a great performance machine with good and steady handling out on the highway. The front brake was a single leading shoe front brake, with a tradition drum brake at the rear- unlike most of the bikes now that have disc brakes. The engine featured 47 horsepower and was oil injected to alleviate mixing the oil with gasoline which was done prior to oil injection. Fueling was done using two Mikuni 32 mm carburetors. Top speed was measured at a whopping mph with a standing quarter mile of seconds and a terminal speed of mph. Impressive speeds and acceleration at that time, but enough to put most to sleep by today s standards. Compare this to Suzuki s own 2014 Hayabusa 1340cc sport bike that now puts out 170 rear wheel horsepower (more at the engine), with top speeds in the neighborhood of 160 mph. Still the Suzuki 500 Titan furthered the Japanese assault on the infant American motorcycle market and would captivate the hearts of many bikers at that time.
