Danise tells me I write too much so my resolution for 2019 is to try to compress my thoughts. Not much of a chance of that one taking hold but I can try. Please see the time and date for the gathering this month along with the menu selection at Broken Roads. The info is in this newsletter. (Doing better already. Eliminating redundancy.) We are looking for Ride Planners. Danise is taking the reins as Ride Coordinator until someone volunteers, and she wants to do it as a committee. She and I will do all the notifications, flyers, and information sharing, but we need help with ride ideas and planning. Ride Planners DO NOT have to lead rides, albeit we would love to have the diversity of multiple people taking the lead. You will be seeing s coming out requesting assistance. If you don't want to help with planning, we would still love to have your ride ideas. They can be ed to us at dmhartle@comcast.net. Doors open at 5:30 pm with dinner (officially) at 6:00 pm. The gathering will follow dinner. Because the restaurant is opening just for our group, the menu is limited. The normal sandwich menu will be available. This includes burgers, hoagies, fish, fries, etc. Desserts and beverages are available also. PA District Directors What lives in the winter, dies in the summer and grows with its roots upward? Another year in the books or just behind us. We have enjoyed our first year as your PA District Directors. The riding season may not have been what we liked, but we had FUN with our GWRRA friends and family all year long. We look forward to 2019 and having FUN with our GWRRA family and are hoping for a great riding season in The Christmas and New Year Parties are over with the exception of a few After Holiday Parties. Thank you to all the officers that have stepped forward (or are remaining in office) for your dedication to your GWRRA chapter. And thank you to those officers that have completed their term; we appreciate everything that you have done for your chapter and GWRRA. Thank You! 2018 Chapter Directors and Chapter Treasurers: It is time to turn in your chapter s year-end paperwork and file the chapter s 990N. 4 Levels Program Have you enrolled in the GWRRA Levels Program? Are you current in the Levels Program? Check your status at: On the Rider Education page, click on My R.E. Information and log in to see where you stand. We encourage you to accept the challenge to make the commitment, learn the skills, and apply what you learn so that you can make motorcycling safer, increase your riding skills, and make other drivers more aware of motorcycles. Safety doesn t happen by accident! Chapter Directors: Have you turned in your money, sold tickets, and any unsold tickets for the PA District Raffle to Mike Prince, ADD? They must be turned in by January 15, 2019 Answer to riddle: An icicle. Have you looked at the 2019 Calendar of Events on the PA District website? The year is going to be very busy with chapter gatherings, rides, dinners, and ice cream. We hope you are planning on attending the PA District Rally, All Chapters West, district rides, and Wing Ding. Remember the Roll for the Dough program starts in January. Now is a good time to start your visitations and earning your points. Please to look at the 2019 Roll for the Dough Guidelines. They have been changed to help your chapter earn more points and have more FUN with your GWRRA family and friends. Where do snowmen keep their money? Now is also a great time to send in your PA District Rally registration for Ride of the Roses being held May 16-18, 2019 in York, PA at the Wyndham Garden. If you send in your registration before February 28, 2019, you will be entered into a drawing for $100 cash! Don t forget there are several extra events to consider signing up for on the registration. Thursday evening s Welcome Party that includes a meal. Friday morning Harley-Davidson Factory tour. Riding Classes: Road Captain, Advanced Rider Course, Side Car and Trike Course. (Your deposit is refunded after you take the class) GWRRA Medic-First Aid course on Saturday. (Fee is for class supplies) And don t forget to book your room at the Wyndham Garden York. Answer to second riddle: In a snowbank Remember to always ride safe! Chuck & Evelyn Stone... Pennsylvania District Educators Hi Everyone: It s hard to imagine that 2018 is almost gone and 2019 is fast approaching. Christmas is only a couple weeks away and New Years is one week behind. Evelyn and I hope that all of you are prepared for all the activities associated with the holidays and have prepared yourself for the addition of several pounds. As we enter 2019, you should be going online and checking your individual training status to see what classes you need to take in order to stay current in the levels program. The arrival of 2019 means another GREAT YEAR of riding, attending GWRRA functions, and visiting with our GWRRA friends. The majority of us have already put our bikes/trikes away for a long winters nap, but there may be a few who continue to ride through the winter. Not everyone has the luxury of heated grips, heated seats, and heated clothing. Keep in mind when you are there riding to watch for the following: anti- skid, slippery spots on the roads, potholes, and white/ yellow lines which Become slippery when wet. Take a break and stop to warm yourself. Keep in mind that cold hands and feet do not react well. If you are out riding and your fingers become numb, put latex gloves over your liners, and then put your regular gloves on over the latex gloves. It s amazing how effective this simple idea can be. The winter months also provide a great opportunity to have a Training Day. These are always fun to have during the cold winter months, and it only takes a couple of hours. Again in 2019, we encourage everyone to get involved in the Rider Education program to improve your riding skills and knowledge so that you and your passenger enjoy the ride and return home safely. Evelyn and I have enjoyed the last year as PA District Educators and would like thank all of you for all your help and support. Advertising Coordinator/Webmaster Motorcycle Movies I m rerunning an article I wrote four years ago. Although it s been a mild winter so far, most of us won t be riding in this weather. No doubt, there is more snow on the way. Unless you have a heated garage to work in, you probably won t be doing much maintenance or adding of bling to your bike. That means that this might be a good time to view some motorcycle movie classics to get you looking forward to warmer weather. Every time I try to think of titles of bike movie classics, I usually fall way short (just like my memory). So, I thought I would make up a short list this month to both refresh our memories and provide some ideas for watching some great biker movies while we wait for the riding season. While some of these movies are reality-based, others contain chase scenes where any self-respecting biker knows that kind of riding can only happen in the movies. Contact Larry Pounds at: First off, is what many women would probably consider a guy flick, although some of those same women probably don t mind seeing the star of the movie anyway. Mission: Impossible II, released in 2000, stars some guy named Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt. Throughout the film, which is mostly typical non-stop Mission Impossible-style action, Cruise battles it out with rogue IMF agents performing impossible stunts on Triumph superbikes. It s a very entertaining movie and will have you on the edge of your seat and possibly even giggling at some of the bike chase situations. It has slow motion, rock music background, explosions, stoppies, and even mysterious bike tire changes from a street tire to off road knobbies halfway through the chase pull-ease! The World s Fastest Indian. This now-classic movie made in 2005 stars Anthony Hopkins as Burt Munro in the retelling of a true story. Munro, the aging New Zealander who spent many years building a 1920 Indian motorcycle for a land speed attempt has several setbacks, mostly related to financial problems which prevented him from his lifelong goal. After failing time and again to get to where he needed to be, Munro sold almost all his possessions in 1967 in a last ditch attempt to travel to Utah and break the world land speed record before his age and health made it completely impossible. Made in 1963, this classic movie, while not really a biker movie, contains one of the most memorable stunt riding action shots (it was an actual stunt, not computerassisted as many are today) of any time. It stars the late Steve McQueen making a run for it from the Nazis toward the Austrian border on his motorcycle - a Triumph TT 650 Special disguised as a German BMW R75 (yeah, really). Steve McQueen did his own riding (he s a big motorcycle fan in real life as well), and even doubled for one of his German pursuers. However, he didn t perform the famous jump over the fence, which was actually done by his friend, and stuntman, Bud Ekins. 10 Peg Zortman... Chapter Historian ANNIVERSARY * indicates a friend who has passed away I ll make this History Lesson short... On Sunday, January 5, 1986, fifty-nine motorcycle riding people met for a buffet luncheon at the Blue Room Restaurant East Main Street-Reynoldsville. The restaurant was open for our group only...anything sound familiar? That gathering 33 years ago was the Kickoff for GWRRA Chapter PAI. Most of the people attending were there to find out what GWRRA was all about and if it would be something they might want to join...they listened and joined...and PAI was off and running. Some of the people at that first gathering are still part of our group today although not as active as they once were. Bill & Peg Zortman became the first Area Representatives (Chapter Directors). Dave & Susan Moore have held many positions. Danny & *Emma Jane Mowrey attended nearly every function, as did Tim & Kathy Shaffer and Don & *Virginia Marnati. Paul & Helen Long as well as George & Kathie Simcox joined our ranks shortly after that first gathering. PAI grew. We traveled, we learned, we made new friends, and we had FUN. As we kick off a new year at the same location as our kickoff, our New Year wish to one and all is: Go! Learn! Make new friends! And above all HAVE FUN! Happy 2019! Lesson over Go make memories!
