A few weeks ago, the temp was in the 50 s and 60 s, until we got surprised with more than 6 inches of snow!!! Thank heaven, a few days later it warmed up, rained, and washed it all away. What a change, it sure did put a speed bump in the road to riding season. Now we have another cold front moving through, I sure hope the Spring Riding Season is here to stay after this current cold spell ends. Fortunately, we didn t have to wait for perfect weather to take advantage of all the FUN activities over the past month since the last newsletter. A quick recap of the last few weeks shows just how busy it s been: March 17 th. March 24 th April 11 th April 14 th April 21 st May 2 nd May 6 th May 11 th May 12 th We had our Gathering with a rather small turnout with several Snow Birds still down south. Country Cupboard Ride-In; Rain kept the attendance down a little last year, but previous years have had more than 600 Bikes in attendance and how about the great Breakfast!!! PA-B Spring Fling; It s a Crock is the theme again this year, and if you remember last year all the Crock Pots were filled with so much good food, and you do know, everyone brings their best homemade recipes. Till We Meet Again!! Gerry & Bonnie VanArt Chapter PA-H Directors After 3 months in South Carolina at the beach, we are home. It was our first time as snowbirds and the experience was great. We have never been to the ocean for more than a week. But watching the tides, birds and dolphins over the three months makes you appreciate a slower pace. One person said the ocean sounds are the earth breathing. You can almost believe that if you listen long enough. Our trip home was one of high winds so pulling a trailer was a bit tricky, but we made it back safe and sound. What awaited us at home was another thing. No power and snow flurries. What a welcome! We are finally back to normal and happy to be home. Now it s time to plunge back in to GWRRA mode. We attended our chapter team meeting, and the District meeting is next on our agenda. We re planning to attend Chapter M s Hobo Stew, Chapter B s Spring Fling and our District Rally all in May. Then we ll be getting getting ready for our Dice Run. Right now we are down to my Cam Am to ride. Bill is still pondering what cycle to buy. We went to Colombia, SC to ride the new 18 Gold Wing. It was so nice to be on 2 wheels again so I hope we have one soon. We re really looking forward to seeing all of our PA GWRRA friends that we have not seen in a while. Charlie won the Door Prize. Thanks everyone for joining us. We hope to see you in April! Respectfully submitted, Bonnie VanArt Editor Well, it has been a while, but I had a lot of recuperating to do. Between the accident and then helping Santa, I really needed that vacation. I m glad they took me with them. I stayed most days lazing around in the house because it was cold and the ocean scared me a bit. But the more I watched, the more dogs I saw on the beach. Then we met a neighbor that had a small dog,and she was nice. Her name was Millie. As you see in the picture I enjoyed watching the ocean from our bench. Most of the dogs were large but I made friends with Jack and Halley, two golden retrievers, I could not keep up with them as they chased their ball and they liked to go into the water. That water was cold!! My other duty was to visit with the local chapter and meet their mascot. Did you know that pelicans are afraid of dogs? Every time I went to meet him he would fly away and hide. They will just have to leash it like they do me so he will not leave. Maybe next time we go to their gathering I will be able to get a picture. We are now home and all I hear about are the upcoming happenings and I know I will be busy again. Look for me at the District Rally Susky 3

8 Hello everyone! Last month, we started talking about GWRRA s Rider Education Program (REP). If you missed it, look up the March newsletter to read about the purpose of the program. To refresh your memory, Level I is all about commitment, and Level II is Education. As they say on many TV commercials, But wait there s more! There are two more levels to REP. Do you have what it takes to up your game in motorcycle safety? The following information is taken from the GWRRA website. Level III: Safety by Preparedness Level III of the REP is also referred to as Certified Tour Rider/Co-Rider. It represents the commitment of the Rider and/or Co-Rider to be prepared in the event of an accident to give aid and possibly save lives. This is done by being knowledgeable in First Aid or CPR and carrying a first aid kit on their motorcycle at all times. It would be wonderful if we could achieve the coveted goal of zero accidents, however, we know realistically, accidents will happen. Because of this, it is important to be fully prepared to lend aid to unfortunate accident victims. It is important to always be prepared to save a life. Level III of the Rider Education Program was developed to deal with such circumstances by recognizing and encouraging proper First Aid or CPR training. CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation), has been used to save many lives. Being trained to render CPR or First Aid is a tremendous asset to those the REP participant will come in contact with daily. Requirement: Current in Level ll and have taken either First Aid or CPR training. No cost to sign up. Patches available at $4.00 per participant. Receive: "Certified Tour Rider" or "Certified Co-Rider" patch. Level IV: Safety By Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness Level IV is the most prestigious of the REP levels and is referred to as Master Tour Rider/Co-Rider. It represents the highest commitment of the Rider and/or Co-Rider to safe riding and preparedness. This commitment is shown by a demonstrated history of safe miles and current certification in both First Aid and CPR. These Master Tour Riders/Co- Riders are the finest example to everyone of the highest commitment to safe motorcycle operation and preparedness. Level IV of the REP, the Master Tour Rider, was designed for those special caring individuals who desire to "be all they can be" with regards to motorcycle safety. The requirements are more stringent than Level III and require a greater commitment. These individuals are caring, trained and prepared with the experience to back them up. It is realized Level IV is not for everyone, but for those who desire to be of greater service to their fellow man, it is the correct prescription. Why desire to be a Level IV Master Tour Rider? It's a worthy goal. Being prepared to save a life is a high calling indeed! These individuals are shining examples to the rest of the GWRRA membership. Others aspire to practice the same commitment as displayed by those who have attained Level IV. For that reason, because these individuals are ambassadors to the members at all levels, GWRRA provides a special gathering to celebrate the Master Tour Rider commitment each year at the District Rally, Region D Rally and Wing Ding. Requirement: Current in Level lll for one year and have taken both First Aid and CPR training. Have 25,000 Safe Miles and must be committed to the suggested riding with "Proper Riding Gear" at all times. Cost: $35.00 for each participant (Black and Gold patch is available for another $8.00) Receive: "Special Triangular" patch with dark blue border and your individual Master number embroidered on it. Note: all Level Program Patches are also available in "Black and Gold" at a charge of $1 extra per level for levels I, II, and III. So there you have the program structure: Level I Safety by Commitment Level II Safety by Education Level III Safety by Preparedness Level IV Safety by Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness The GWRRA is proud to present the Rider Education Program. We encourage you to think seriously about motorcycle safety and be a participant in the GWRRA Rider Education Program. You should also remember the old cliché, "an ounce of prevention IS worth a pound of cure." Always wear protective riding apparel! If you are ready to sign up for the program, or if you have questions, please contact me at prosemi2017@gmail.com. I will be more than happy to help you. Remember to be seen, and have FUN getting there. Doug Motter Pennsylvania District Educator prosemi2017@gmail.com 8

9 Hello Fellow Goldwingers Last month I wrote about the nice mild weather we were enjoying. Well I guess Old Man Winter took offence and decided to take one last shot at us. We just had another 4 or 5 inches of snow, enough to make a real mess. The calendar says Spring started yesterday but Old Man Winter appears to be holding on a little longer!!! I never thought I would say this out loud but, Where s the Spring Rain??? Hopefully when the Rain finally does arrive it will melt all the snow and wash away all the remaining traces of Old Man Winter s leftover cinders, and calcium from the roads. With Spring and the beginning of the riding season, several things come to mind. Are the bikes ready, and even more important, are we ready for a new riding season? It s not that hard to determine if the bike is ready. Think T-CLOCK, but what do we need to check to see if WE are ready? Remember our riding skills will be a little rusty for the first few rides and let s face it, most of us don t ride like professional road racers even after the rust is gone. So, start out slow and easy with a few shorter rides until some of the rust wears off. Before that first ride, let s check our riding gear? How old is your helmet (remember, it has a suggested replace-by-date) and is it in good condition? Is the face shield scuffed or cloudy? What about your rain gear? Are your gloves in good shape? What condition is your riding jacket in, and the big question, Does it still fit??? If it s time to replace your jacket you may want to consider one of the new armored hi-tech jackets with an air flow ventilation system, they are quite comfortable in most weather conditions and best of all, they add a little extra safety. The new super bright colors have become more popular the last few years because they also help us to be seen. As well as getting Us and the Bike ready for the new season there is some Training that we should talk about. As everyone knows, the Pa Rally will be in May again this year and there is only a couple FUN filled months before we meet in Uniontown. That means it s time to work on the Rally training schedule and we could really use some Help!!! If there are any topics that you would like to see offered, please let us know and we will make every effort to provide them. To see the complete list of available Training, visit the Pa District Website home page and click on the Training Button. There are many new Modules and several older Seminars to choose from. We ve been looking them over to see what might be of interest this year. That means lots of Training Opportunities will be available at the Rally. Please take advantage of the Training that best fits your needs, hopefully there will be something for everyone! In the last couple weeks, we had two Training Days. One at Chapter M and another at Chapter N. We would like to THANK both Chapters for hosting the Training. They did an excellent job and what a great turnout!!! February 25 th PA-M hosted 31 members who had the opportunity to participate in 4 Rider Education Seminars and one of the new Modules. Seminars presented were Mature Rider, Crash Scene Response, Trailering, Mountains, Hills & Curves, and the Newsletter Module. March 3 rd Chapter N hosted 38 members for another full day of training consisting of 3 Modules (A View From the Rear, When You re Hot, You re Hot, & Bad Apples) and 2 Seminars (Mountains, Hills & Curves and the Mature Rider). We also wanted to send a special Thank You to Tom & Renee Wasluck, Brownie & June Statler, and Tim & Crystal Brakebill for presenting several of the classes as well as assisting Bonnie & I at each event. We all had a good time, and I feel everyone took something valuable away from each of these events. We also have one more Training Day scheduled for March 31 st and hosted by Chapter W. I m sure it will be another great day. If you are interested in attending some Training or your Chapter is interested in hosting a Training Event, Please contact us! With the help of the GW University Trainers and Instructors, we are happy to offer any training YOU the members, are interested in attending. Just let us know your interests and we ll do our best to schedule the training at a convenient place and time to support the majority of our members. What could be better than spending some time with our GWRRA Family of Friends learning more about riding and our organization. What a great way to start the year!!! Please, Promote and Support the various Training Opportunities within your Chapters. With the support of the GW University Trainers and Instructors, we ll do our best to make the training both Informative and FUN!!! We look forward to seeing you at a future Training event. 10 GWRRA National North 11 th Ave. Phoenix, AZ Phone: President: Fred & Anita Alkire Presidential Assistants: Bruce & Barb Beeman Jere & Sherry Goodman Francois & Chantal Sequin Bob & Nancy Shrader Tom & Renee Wasluck Don & Sharon Weber Directors: Membership: Larry & Penny Anthony University: Fred & Clara Boldt Mororist Awareness Mike & Barri Critzman Finance Randall Drake Ameritus Ray & Sandi Garris Overseas: Dan & Rachel Sandervich Anita & JR Alkire President A Philosophy and a Lesson in One I had a couple of s come my way after my article was featured in Wing World Magazine. There were questions about my front tire from the picture on the front cover. Some were curious and wanted to know where to buy one. Others were very quick to judgement. I had Members accusing me of running a car tire as my front tire on the trike and then telling me how I wasn t setting a good example. Ouch! I share this because in my head, after some words that shall not be repeated, all I could think of was one of my favorite sayings, a philosophy, that has been front and center in my leadership in dealing with just about everything. Gary Keller said, Stay into curiosity and out of judgement. Let s replay my scenario if this philosophy was in place. Anita, I noticed that you have a car tire on your trike, is that correct? OR Anita is that a car tire on your trike? You see, either would have put me into a sharing mode to explain that, yes, I do have a car tire on the front end of my trike because it s a EuroWing front end that is re-engineered with a new triple tree and as a result of that entirely new front end, the configuration includes a car tire on a rim/wheel designed for a car tire. EuroWing makes trike kits and are advertisers in Wing World Magazine, take a look. I got to share, and the receiver got to learn something new. It also comes down to your point of view. Remember as leaders in GWRRA our Members sometimes feel entitled to be rude or accusatory to you. This is when we become ducks and let that stuff roll off our back. Then we work to see it from their point of view while always staying into curiosity! A philosophy and a lesson. Housekeeping/Did you Know? When an Officer steps forward and their Appointing Officer fills out the Officer Change and Appointment form, are you aware that the term for that office is one year? All of our Officer terms are for a year at a time and they are renewed for another year after a review from the Appointing Officer. Back to that paperwork. When you fill out the paperwork, be certain that the membership expiration date of the new Officer is the same length, or longer, than the term of the office. If you are appointed on January 1, then your Membership needs to go to at least January 1 of the next year. I ve been going through a lot of new appointments and this is the most common item that needs attention. Thanks for paying attention to this. Another Word Adding another phrase for us to change in The phrase, ageing out, is out there a lot about our Association. I don t know about you, but I am not ageing out! Look around, many of us look great, get around pretty well, and we still ride an amazing motorcycle. When we use that phrase, we are acknowledging to all those other motorcyclists what they think. Let s prove them wrong, that we are vital, engaged, active, and love what we do, and we do it with enthusiasm. Let s stop using that phrase, and we ll change those around us and the impression they may have. It may just be one little change that can help add new Members to our fun and active Association of motorcycle riders and enthusiasts. Anita & JR Alkire President@gwrra.org 10

11 GWRRA Vision Gold Wing Road Riders Association [GWRRA], founded in 1977, is recognized as the world's largest single-marquee motorcycle association in the world. GWR- RA provides safety, technical, and educational services to its Members world-wide GWRRA Mission Dedicated to our Motto; Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge, GWRRA Members enjoy the freedom of belonging to a not-for-profit, non -religious and nonpolitical organization. GWRRA Values Friends - GWRRA Members are men and women from all walks of life with varied interests and backgrounds. We have Gold Wing and other touring motorcycle riders of all age groups. Some ride solo and many ride with small and large groups! New Members join GWRRA especially for the technical information we share; some of our Members join for the enjoyment of riding with friends and also meeting new friends. Tom & Renee Wasluck Presidential Assistants Most of us joined GWRRA because of our love of our motorcycles. We have stayed because of the friends we have made and the FUN we are having. Chapter life adds to the adventures and fun. A Chapter is where we meet with our friends, go to and see places we normally would not have done or even known about, and just plain have FUN. More Members in a chapter means: More ride ideas More friends More FUN Future officers All of which contribute to the health of your Chapter! There are many ways to recruit and add Members to your Chapter. The first, and easiest, is the ARL. Take a look at your ARL - we bet you will see a few names of Members, yes Members, that have never been to a gathering. Call them, send a newsletter, and send them an . Invite them to your next few Chapter events. They just might have been waiting for someone to contact them. We all love to show off our bikes. Why not hold a mall show or set up for a few hours at your local Walmart parking lot? People love to stop and admire a group of bikes. Have some membership applications and GWRRA information with you. Both of these options take a little planning, but they are a great way to be seen. Make it FUN! Another great way to get out and meet potential new members is to attend Bike Nights. Many of our local restaurants hold them during the spring and summer months. You meet a lot of fellow bikers, on all types of motorcycles. It s usually a FUN night. An added bonus for us is a dinner out no cooking or cleaning up! How many times have you stopped at a rest area or ran into the grocery store and seen a rack with the free local newspapers? Most of them are published every other week. You would be amazed at how many people take and read those newspapers - we were! The majority of these publications will let you put a small article about your Chapter under the community service section. Be sure to include contact information. May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. Many of these publications will usually do an article with a picture of your Chapter during the month of May. As Bob Shrader said last month, become friends with your local Honda dealer.
