Last month we had another FUN Mystery Ride. Some of the reasons I enjoy the Mystery Ride so much are; we had a FUN ride on Great Roads, a Good Meal with Great Friends, Ice Cream at the Purple Cow, and a Safe day. Oh Yeah, there is one more big reason why the Mystery Ride was a Success and that s because I didn t have to Buy Lunch or Ice Cream for anyone but Bonnie, but I ve been doing that almost forever!!! Believe it or not, everyone got to experience some new roads and I got to check out the area where I grew up. For those that didn t make the ride, we had a great meal at Marzoni s Brick Oven Brewing Co. near Selinsgrove. Where has summer gone? It feels like the summer just started and its already November with its cooler nights and great sunny days for riding. The temperatures will soon be consistently in the 30 s overnight and daytime highs will only be in the 50 s. I guess it s about time to start thinking about what that means to a rider. For Bonnie it means Heat On if by chance I can talk her into going for a bike ride. After about 14 layers of clothing and a fully heated electric suit (jacket, pants, socks, and gloves) we may be able to go for a short ride on a nice sunny day. It goes without saying; the cooler weather really takes a toll on our riding. Those of you who know Bonnie and I know we lost our beloved German Shepherd NINA back in May and the house has felt empty all summer, so we decided to get another puppy. We searched the internet and found a local kennel that specializes in Big Beautiful German Shepherd s named Guardian Angel Shepherds. After a few phone calls and a visit to see a litter of the 9 cutest little black fur-balls you ever saw, one little guy was especially cute and friendly and won us over very quickly. His name is RUGER, he is 9 weeks old, and is making our house his home! It s really easy to get into the Holiday mood with all the upcoming activities. On Wednesday evening (11/8) we ll have a Staff Meeting at our house to finalize plans for our Chapter H Christmas activities. Saturday (11/18) we ll have our Gathering followed by Tree Fest the next day where we will be decorating the Christmas tree based on our theme for this year, Winter Wonderland. After we finish decorating the Christmas tree it will be time to kick back and do a little socializing at one of the local restaurants for a late afternoon meal. This should start the Holiday Season off on a good note, what could be better than sharing some good food with great friends. A few days later it will be Thanksgiving with all that great food to share with family and friends. The following weekend on Saturday (12/2) it s time for our Christmas Party, that s always a good time and a great way to kick off December. This year our Christmas Party is at the Central Susquehanna Community Foundation in Berwick same as last year and we are having the same great food as last year. Make sure everyone gets their reservation in as soon as possible so we can get an accurate count for the caterer. These next couple weeks should be more than enough to get even the worst Scrooge in the Christmas Spirit. It looks like the Holiday season is upon us (ready or not) and I m sure everyone will have a great time with family and friends this Christmas Season. Happy Trails To You Till We Meet Again!! Believe it or not November is here, and it s time to think of winterizing everything. I usually send a picture to our daughter of our first snowfall. She beat me to it this year. On Friday (Nov. 3) they had snow flurries in Seattle while we are just getting some colder weather. Bill mowed the lawn on Friday, not something you think of doing in November. Our group has events coming that we are looking forward to attending: Tree Fest in Bloomsburg this month, and our Christmas party is the first Saturday in December. The fliers are out for other chapters parties also. Whether Bill and I will attend any of them is up in the air. I am still recuperating from the accident. I just started to walk with a walker and I m not yet allowed to go steps. It didn t seem to take this long with my last broken bone, but then I was younger. We are still up in the air on whether to buy a 2017 left over or look at the 2018 Gold Wings. Till then we will ride my cycle. We re spending a lot of time on the computer reading all about the new one, but we thought we d wait until spring to make the purchase. You never know, we might just see one we like before that. With all my time recuperating I have had time to think of places to ride to next year, some new ones and some of our old favorites. When in the cold of winter, you know January or February, you start thinking of where you want to visit. We love to visit new and different places, so think about it and let us know. More riding is in our future. Again, I would like to thank everyone who has called or sent greetings to us since the accident. 2 Friends Knecht d by Wings, Bill and Charlene Knecht We met at Gerry and Bonnie s home on Oct. 11 for our team meeting. Thank you Bonnie for making supper, Neal for the salad, and Dee for the dessert. Also a thank you to the guys that wrestled the wheel chair and me into the house. Tony gave the treasurer s report and all is good. We talked about the District raffle tickets, quilt tickets for the chapter and chapter shirts to be ordered. Our District Team Meeting will be held on April 14, May will be the District Rally in Uniontown, that is south of Pittsburgh. All Chapters West will be June and All Chapters East will be held in July the So mark your calendars for these special dates. The chapter will be doing Tree Fest again this year. Meet at the Consistory in Bloomsburg for the 1 pm decorating on Nov. 19 th. There is a twist we will be providing food and gifts for a family that will get our tree. There is a 7 year old girl and a 3 year old boy. What fun to buy toys and clothes again. To make someone s Christmas brighter. Nov. 8 is our team meeting At Gerry and Bonnie s home. This one is important as we will be wrapping up the preparations for Tree Fest and the Christmas party. Just a reminder, we need a count of who is coming from the chapter and we also need desserts for the party. Watch for s. Respectfully submitted by, Charlene Knecht

October 11 Renee Wasluck October 25 Shirley Smith November 14 Paul Brenner November 30 Gary Elliott Saturday, October 14 was cloudy, threatening to rain when 12 of us met at the Giant parking lot for the Mystery Ride. In spite of the weather, everyone rode their bike. Gerry led us through some really nice country roads including Sunbury Road which brought us into the Northumberland end of Sunbury where we crossed the bridge onto the island and stopped at the Marina for a break. From there we went through Northumberland onto Rte. 11 and turned onto County Line Road to get to Rte. 15 North toward Winfield. We then turned onto Rte. 304 through New Berlin to Rte. 104 toward Middleburg and crossed Shade Mountain to Rte. 35 turning at Cruisers Café to go through Freeburg where we caught new Rte 11 & 15 to Shamokin Dam. We made a right turn going behind the Sheetz and coming up the next street to arrive at Marzoni s Brick Oven and Brewing Company, where we met Bill & Char and went in for a delicious meal. After dinner Gerry led us out 522 to 204 through Kratzerville and Penn s Creek to 45 where we made a right turn, went about a mile and ended up at the Purple Cow for Ice Cream. There was a festival going on across the road from the Purple Cow complete with Hay Rides, Corn Maze and Big Truck Rides. It was packed with cars going in and out the whole time we were having our Ice Cream. Heading home we wished each other safe journey as we broke off going our separate ways. The rain held off and we had a great ride. NO Nobody guessed the Restaurant, so Gerry didn t have to buy. Thanks to everyone who went along and made the Mystery Ride so much FUN! Bonnie October 24 Tom & Renee Wasluck November 27 Dale & Jean Derrick We met on October 21 at Tom s Kitchen in Conyngham on Rte. 93. Breakfast was enjoyed and at 10 am we had our gathering. 4 Aah yes celebrating the 35 th Anniversary with Chapter B, especially while enjoying a spectacular Smorgasbord at Shady Maple! What could be better?? Gerry & I were privileged to do just that on Friday, October 27 th. PA-B had reserved a room in the Shady Maple Restaurant for the celebration. They reminisced about the last 35 years and introduced their Charter members attending that evening. Also in attendance were friends from PA-A, PA-V, and Harold & Diane (PA-N) our incoming PA District Directors. After dinner everyone lined up on the stairs for a photo to commemorate the event. After bidding a fond farewell we started home. Thank you PA-B for letting us celebrate this special event with you. Respectfully submitted, Bonnie VanArt I d like to remind everyone to please submit your articles for the newsletter by the end of the month for next month s newsletter. Remember, this is your newsletter, and it s only as good as you make it. Please contribute information to it. Also, as always, I m open for any comments, suggestions, or questions. I m truly grateful to all of you who submit articles. Without your input there would be no newsletter. 6 from PA-H visited PA-M on Saturday, November 4 to celebrate their 30 th anniversary with them at the Holiday Inn in Williamsport. After a wonderful meal, we took a trip down Memory Lane with them as they told about how they got started as a chapter and some of the FUN things they did over the last 30 years. A Dirty Bingo provided a lot of lively entertainment for everyone amid the comradery of all the guests. Along with Chapter M and H, some from PA-R joined in the festivities. Not to be outdone, we were honored by the presence of Rick & Andi Rick, present District CD s; and Harold & Diane Jackson, incoming District CD s. After a great time visiting, we said our Good-byes and started for home. Some who came from longer distances booked rooms and stayed over. Thanks, Chapter PA-M, for showing everyone such a good time, and CONGRATULATIONS on making so many great memories for PA-M over the last 30 years! Respectfully submitted, Bonnie VanArt 4

QUICK TIPS: Guidelines For Riding With A Passenger On Your Motorcycle Legal Considerations All state laws and requirements for carrying a passenger must be followed. Some states have specific equipment requirements. Examples: the motorcycle must have passenger footrests, passengers must be able to reach the footrests, and a motorcycle must have a separate seating area for a passenger. The decision to carry a child, assuming all safety and legal factors have been considered, is left to the parent or guardian. Ensure that the child is mature enough to handle the responsibilities, tall enough to reach the footrests, wears a properly fitted helmet and other protective gear, and holds onto you or the passenger hand-holds. Check your state s laws; a few states have set minimum ages for motorcycle passengers. Operator Preparation Passengers should be considered as a second active rider so they can help ensure that safety and procedural operations are correctly followed. A passenger will affect the handling characteristics of a motorcycle due to the extra weight and independent motion. A passenger tends to move forward in quick stops and may bump your helmet with theirs. Starting from a stop may require more throttle and clutch finesse. Braking procedures may be affected. Braking sooner and/or with greater pressure may be required. More weight over the rear tire may increase the usefulness and stopping power of the rear brake, especially in quick stop situations. Riding on a downgrade will cause braking distance to increase compared to a flat surface. Extra caution is called for in a corner because of the extra weight. Cornering clearances may be affected. More time and space will be needed for passing. The effects of wind, especially side wind, may be more pronounced. Motorcycle Preparation The motorcycle must be designed to accommodate a passenger. The motorcycle owner s manual should be reviewed for manufacturer s tips about motorcycle setup as well as any related operational recommendations. The motorcycle s suspension and tire pressure may need adjustment. Care should be taken to not exceed the weight limitations specified in the owner s manual. 6

Passenger Preparation Passengers should be tall enough to reach the footrests and mature enough to handle the responsibilities. Passengers should wear proper protective gear. Passengers should receive a safety briefing (see #7 below). Passengers should consider themselves a second operator and share responsibility for safety. General Safety Considerations 1. You need to be experienced in the motorcycle s operation and have a safety-oriented attitude before taking on the added responsibility of carrying a passenger. 2. Practice low-speed clutch/throttle control as well as normal and emergency braking in a lowrisk area like an open parking lot, with a passenger. 3. Use caution in cornering and develop cornering skills over time to ensure passenger comfort and safety. 4. Use caution in corners as clearance may be affected. 5. Use MSF s Search, Evaluate, Execute strategy (SEESM) to increase time and space safety margins. 6. Allow time for a passenger to adjust to the sense of speed and the sensation of leaning; speeds should be conservatively safe and reasonable until a passenger acclimates to the proper riding techniques. 7. Ensure passengers follow safety procedures: a. Complete personal protective gear is properly in use. b. Hold operator s waist or hips, or motorcycle s passenger hand-holds. c. Keep feet on footrests at all times, including while stopped. d. Keep hands and feet away from hot or moving parts. e. When in a corner, look over the operator s shoulder in the direction of the corner. f. Avoid turning around or making sudden moves that might affect operation. g. If crossing an obstacle, stand on the pegs with the knees slightly bent and allow the legs to absorb the shock upon impact. 8. Allow more time for passing. 9. Be ready to counter the effects of wind. 10. Avoid extreme speeds and dramatic lean angles. 11. Be ready for a passenger bump with their helmet or with their whole body sliding forward during hard braking. 12. Have the passenger mount after the motorcycle s stand is raised and the motorcycle is securely braced. Hold the front brake lever if the surface isn t level. 13. Have the passenger dismount first. 14. Annually complete a Basic RiderCourse 2 Skills Practice with a passenger. 15. Have frequent passengers complete a Basic RiderCourse so they can better understand the operator s task. 07/12 7

Welcome to another newsletter article. Holy cow, is time flying by. It seems like you just send one article to the editor and it s time for another article to go out. Today I was helping do some chores at a friend s hunting cabin and we were all saying and thinking, wow what a gorgeous day. We should be riding the motorcycle today instead of getting ready for hunting season. It sure hasn t seemed like hunting season weather for the last couple of weeks. And to top it off the camper is put to bed for the winter. Here it is mid-late October and the temperature is in the mid-seventies and the sun is shining like an August day. I wish I could manage time a little better than I seem to do. Oh well I guess not being able to do this comes with age. That s my story and I am sticking to it. It now seems like time for Anniversary and Christmas party announcements. Almost every time I open my we get another notice about a chapter event coming up. Andi and I wish we could attend all the chapter events, but it is physically impossible to do that. It s awesome to see chapters celebrating their extraordinary events. We thank all the chapters that have sent us their Chapter Charter Fees for the upcoming year. If you haven t sent the District a check, please do so as soon as you can. This is critical issue because Region is trying to close their checking account before the end of the year. We need your help to complete their fiscal responsibility. The PA district will be sending out the RFTD checks by the middle-end of November. So, depending on the timing of you receiving this article, we may have already put the checks in the mail. You may still have time to get some last-minute visits to put points on the board. The Roll for the Dough program has changed a little from Please check out the district website for these changes. The biggest change is that there will be no more points for Region events, because there will not be any Northeast Region after January Let me ask you this, do you know how to find things on the District Website? If not, maybe take a minute and check out our website ( I ll give you a hint on how to find the RFTD program, it s under the MED button. Now with riding season somewhat winding down, please take some time and put your district events on your chapter calendar. Events like All Chapters East and All Chapters West along with the District Rally in Uniontown, PA. are now listed on the District website. Hummm, another excuse to look at the website Mike Ammerman spends so much time and effort in updating. Also, please take the time and remove old newsletters and flyers from your calendar. It can get very cluttered and hard to find any current newsletters and flyers you post. Keeping three years of items should be sufficient. Another very important district event coming up will be the District Staff Meeting being held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Clearfield on April 14, At this meeting Harold, Diane and the District Staff will be updating all the changes coming to our great organization. I wish I could go over all the upcoming changes, but a complete list of information is still in its infancy and the Home Office is working to getting the recipe correct before everyone gets to taste it. I believe if everyone gives it a chance and works with it, it will be a momentous change. Let s all keep open mind and keep the rumor mill at check and only state facts that are accurate from here on out. Hopefully you have received your allotment of District Fundraising Tickets. Again, this year we are going with a monthly calendar format. Because of the change of District leadership coming, we changed the month of the raffle to February. Everything will pretty much will stay the same as in years past. Everyone selling tickets will benefit from promoting this fundraiser. The fundraiser again will help offset costs for every member that attends our District Rally and programs like the Couple of the Year, COY Retreat, and Rider Education will also benefit from this fundraiser. Well I m sure you get the idea for the importance of the fundraiser. Again, we thank you from the bottom of our heart for your support. Now is the time to start thinking about officer change paperwork and yearend financial paperwork. Please start going over the paperwork and familiarize yourself with all the paperwork needed. If your chapter is planning on changing officers, you need to go over the forms. Let me remind you that you need to refresh yourself with the user name and password for filing the IRS 990N form. We sure don t want to experience the fiasco of last year with filing this important tax form. We thank you for helping us with this important job. Ride safe and we will see you soon. Rick & Andi Riek Pennsylvania District Directors groundshark@atlanticbb.net Go for it now. The future is promised to no one. (814)

Hello Fellow Goldwingers What an unbelievable travel year this has been!!! We were on the road for a total of almost 3 months this year and traveled about 7000 miles through some of the great scenery and touristy sites our country has to offer. This year we are beginning to get use to traveling in an RV. Bonnie and I had never Camped a day before last year, so we are learning a lot about traveling and living in a small RV. I will admit Glamping may be a more accurate term than Camping when you see what today s RV s have to offer, even a small one. Bonnie and I are so Thankful for the opportunity to travel and enjoy our wonderful country. Speaking of being Thankful, during this month that brings us Thanksgiving, let s talk about something else I believe we should all be Thankful for. That s Volunteers, the people who freely give their time and effort are near the top of my list of things to be Thankful for. We have many of these people within GWRRA. They re our Volunteer Leaders and many of them will be stepping down from their positions and new volunteers will be taking their place the end of this year. November is a great time to reach out and thank all our Volunteer Leaders for everything they have done for us as GWRRA members. Being a Chapter Director or any other Chapter, District, or Region Officer takes time and commitment. These Volunteer Leaders care deeply about the members and the association. In a volunteer organization like GWRRA, the words Thank You are the only reward these members receive. These words are very powerful and all too rare!!! It is extremely important that we remember to give a big and well deserved Thank You to all our Volunteer Leaders during this month which is all about being Thankful. There is also some good news in the Training ranks. In September, Tim Grimes from the National staff presented an ITCP class to several members from Pa, NJ, and NY. We would like to CONGRATUATE Peggy Kratz (PA-Y), Mike Prince (PA-V), and Chuck Stone (PA-W) for successfully completing the Instructor Training Certification Program. This Training requires considerable effort on the part of the student Volunteer including some on-line work at home, an interview/debrief by the National Staff, and successful completion of the all-day ITCP presented by a Certified Instructor Trainer. Thank You again and Congratulations to PA s 3 newest ITCP Certified Instructors. Another thing to start thinking about this time of the year, besides the Holiday get-togethers, is what training could we take advantage of during the COLD Winter months. Let s face it, what could be better than spending some time with our GW friends learning more about our organization. It sure beats sitting around the house dreaming about what to do till the weather warms up and we can get our bikes out of hibernation. With many of this year s training opportunities behind us, it s not too late or too early to start thinking about future Training Events later this Fall or during the Winter months. Please contact us if you are interested in attending some Training, or your Chapter is interested in hosting a Training Event anytime in the future. We our blessed with some excellent GW University Trainers throughout the District who would be happy to present it. With their support, we ll do our best to fulfill your requests. There s a lot of non-riding time available over the next several months and don t forget, the PA District Rally will be early next year in May and that s not too far in the future. For a complete list of available training visit the Pa District Website home page and click on the Training Button. Please, Promote and Support the various Training opportunities within your Chapters. All requests are welcome by (gbvanart@msn.com) or phone ( ). With Your cooperation and Chapter participation, we ll do our best to make the training Available, Informative, and FUN!!! We look forward to hearing from you soon. With all the FUN activities and events left on this year s GWRRA schedule to take advantage of, I m sure we ll all have a great time visiting our neighbor Chapters and getting to know more of those GW Friends we haven t met yet!!! Beginning this month, it s almost impossible to go more than a few days without some sort of get-together with family and friends including our GWRRA family of friends. While traveling to and from these get-togethers, we need to be concerned about our Driving Safety due to the ever-changing road conditions. Remember, a Safe Holiday Season will mean a Happy Holiday Season for everyone. 11 As we started to write this newsletter, we were both reflecting on everything we have to be thankful for this year. Our children and grandchildren are all doing fine, we are healthy, my job is going well (I am another year closer to retirement), and we ve put a lot of safe miles on our trike. These are just a few things we are thankful for. Life has been good to us. We are also thankful for the many friendships we have made through this Association we belong to, all of the laughter we have shared, and yes, sometimes the sadness...but we have been there for each other. What are you thankful for? We did not get to ride through many states this year; we even had to fly to Wing Ding. As the riding year comes to a close for some of us, we have to say that we did achieve a milestone that we set as a goal for us this year. We were able to reach over 100,000 miles on our odometer on our 2005 Gold Wing trike. If the weather holds out over the fall and winter in the Northeast, we will keep adding to those miles. Now that our trike has over 100,000 miles (it s just now broken in), I made a comment that it s time for a new one. Just in time for the new 2018 Gold Wings to become available. Of course, I was told I had to wait! If you haven t seen the news on the new Gold Wing, check out this web site: Wing#.We_5b9RRni It s exciting to see that Honda has taken some advice from the people that ride their motorcycles. We have waited for these changes for some time now. The Gold Wing and Gold Wing Tour (not sure of the difference with the name) are available with either a new six-speed manual transmission or Honda s advanced next-generation seven-speed automatic dual clutch transmission, which includes forward/ reverse walking mode. There are a lot of other changes detailed in the link above. The new Goldwing should be available in February of We would like to thank all of the districts for sending in their checks for the chapter charter fees. We have already sent a check to the home office for all of Region B Chapters charter fees. Except for a final region expense, the charter fees should be the last of the disbursements from the region funds. We will be meeting with the Region Treasurer to split up the remaining region funds between all of the districts in the region. Once you receive your check, PLEASE deposit it to your checking account so that it clears through our bank to give us a zero balance to complete our final financial report for As this year come to an end, we would like to express our sincere thanks to all of our team. They are the best group people, and they really have been there to help the region membership. Without them, we would have not had (what we like to think is) the BEST region in all of GWRRA. With the holidays right around the corner, we would like to wish all of you a safe and happy holiday season. Ride Safe & Have Fun Tom & Renee Wasluck Northeast Region Directors
