As I write this, it s only a couple weeks till Christmas and I sure hope everyone is ready for all the activities that take place this time each year. The fellowship with family and friends, all the good food and treats to be shared are great anytime but take on additional meaning at Christmas. It s a special time for the Kids, Grandkids, and Great Grandkids, WOW did I really just say Great Grandkids??? It seems like only a couple years ago Bonnie and I were worried about getting out of bed and downstairs before the kids, so we could get pictures of the girls as they came downstairs and discovered their gifts. Now, the new puppy is the only kid in our house, and as long as he gets all the attention, it will be just another typical day for him!!! This will be his second Christmas, and with all the new and different smells, plus the commotion, I m sure it will make for a very interesting Holiday Season. In his first year he has almost made it on to the Good Boy List but then his inner Naughty Puppy shows up!!! It s hard to imagine how spoiled he got in such a short amount of time. Christmas has always been Bonnie s special time and it starts with all the same old Christmas DVD s finding their way to our TV starting a Little before Thanksgiving or even Halloween (like the last couple years). Our TV also has a new feature this year, when I leave the room it auto defaults to the Hallmark Channel. I don t remember downloading that app!!! Bonnie takes care of all the Holiday Incidentals at our house. You know, all those little things like; putting up the Christmas Trees, Decorating the House, Buying and Wrapping the Gifts, Baking and Cooking??? Well, at least on the days we have company!!! With Bonnie taking care of all the Incidental Holiday Stuff that means the Really Important and Difficult Stuff is left for me to deal with. Here are a couple of the important things I struggle with year after year. First is to Quietly stay out of Bonnie s way!!! That may not sound too difficult, but for those who know me, understand that I have a really rough time NOT offering my completely Unbiased and Invaluable opinion!!! Second is to find the right gift that will hopefully surprise Bonnie!!! That may sound pretty simple but after all these years it s getting really hard to surprise her with something, she Needs or Wants at least things that I can afford or have the time to do. I ve pretty much worked my way through the Needs years ago and have been working on the Wants for a long time now. Besides, Wants are always more FUN than Needs!!! I m sure you re beginning to appreciate just how DIFFICULT this time of year is for me, but year after year I Endeavor to Persevere!!! Bonnie and I have already started our annual Christmas Party blitz, So Many Parties So Little Time! What could be better than good food shared with good friends? Many of us have attended or will be attending several of the neighboring Chapters Christmas parties, it s always a great time to visit with our GWRRA extended family of friends. There are plenty of GWRRA activities happening all throughout the Christmas season and beyond, so get out there and Enjoy, Enjoy!!! (continued on next page)

2 Next year will soon be here and that means another great year of riding, visiting, and site seeing with our GWRRA friends. 4 On November 18, 2018 we met at 1pm at the Caldwell Consistory in Bloomsburg to decorate a tree that would go to a family in need. We found a tree in the back room where the stage is. I think it is a much better place than the front room as you could really see it as it stood in a line against the wall. As you went into the room it was seen straight ahead. We had ornaments that the Lady Riders made, red balls with Santa s belt on them, scrolls with the list of gifts children would want (or was that the naughty or nice list), reindeer heads and Frosty s top hat. We added some ornaments of teddy bears, rocking horses, airplanes and sacks of candy. Stockings also held chocolate motorcycles. It was all surrounded by a gold ribbon. Under the tree was food stuffs that would go to the Bloomsburg Food bank. After all that work it was time to head down and around the corner to the West End Ale Haus for lunch. Our group had 10, and they had tables put together for us, so we were all together. It was a very nice time with our GWRRA family. Time to start thinking of ornaments for next year. Thank you, Lady Riders for all your work making the ornaments, and thanks to everyone who helped decorate the tree. Charlene Knecht 4

5 December 1 st was our chapter Christmas party. Many of us where there at 3pm to help setup and decorate. The doors were open for everyone at 5pm. As they came in if they had a gift they got a ticket. That was for the game later. Christmas cards were exchanged and meeting and greeting our friends took the rest of the time till dinner. Of course, many sampled the desserts first. The caterer came with all the delicious food and I had his shoofly pie waiting. He thought I would forget. Gerry called everyone to the tables and we said the Pledge of Allegiance then a moment of silence for those not there and those that have passed. Greg Moore said grace and we all had dinner. Joe Corso brought delicious Italian bread from Brooklyn. None was left! After we ate, a bit of business with awards and introductions was next. The VIP s were Tom and Renee Wasluck Assistants to the President of GWRRA, Harold and Diane Jackson PA District Directors, Mike and Shirley Prince Assistant District Directors and PEDs List Coordinators. Gerry thanked all the chapter team for doing a great job this past year and we are all staying on one more year. Our riding mileage was down but with the weather and injuries it just had to be. Top rider was Bill Bolton, 2 nd was John Brady and 3 rd was Joe Corso. Well done guys. We named a new Couple of the Year. George (Buzz) and Maureen Skilton will be our new Couple of The Year for Time for Ice Cream. Lots of desserts to go with it. Cookies, cupcakes, cake, pies and Dee s Cherry Cobbler, if you were hungry after all of that it s not our fault. The memorial quilt made by Holly Gray was raffled off. It was won by John Cameron, Tony and Ann s son. Time for a new game to get a gift. We played Simon Says. We first picked a gift then we gathered around the tables. (we needed one more) As Bonnie told us what to do or not to do, you had to listen carefully or you had to exchange with someone else. We moved positions and gifts back and forth so much that we just started to laugh. When she was done we got to open the presents. Now you had to hold on to your ticket as it was also used to give away the centerpieces, one centerpiece per family. If you already had one, you passed on to the next. Time for clean-up and taking the food to the women s shelter in Berwick. They are so happy to receive the food. Clean-up and all squared away, and we were out of there around 9pm. Charlene Knecht 5

6 2019 RFTD challenge starts January 1st! Go to the PA District Web Site for the new guidelines for RFTD! Click the MEP link & 2019 Guidelines. Another year is coming to an end! The past few weeks have been filled with parties and sharing the festive times with both old friends and new friends. You can t ask for much more than that! Our Christmas party is in the books. I would like to thank Bill Knecht for the beautiful job he did making the wooden boxes for the centerpieces. The Lady Riders then decorated them. They turned out beautiful! Don t worry Bill, we will think of something else for you to make while you are enjoying the warm weather! Our Tree Fest project turned out amazing, many thanks to the Lady Riders and Maureen Skilton for the beautiful handmade ornaments! We did a lot of recycling with this project. We hope the family that receives our tree enjoys it! Congratulations to Buzz and Maureen for being named the 2019 Chapter Couple of the Year. It was a well-deserved honor for them. These two are so involved in our chapter and are truly a pleasure to spend time with. Tom and I have a few ideas for our ride schedule for We are hoping to get with Bonnie and Gerry this week to talk about the additions. Tom and I would like to Wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. Renee Wasluck Chapter MEC Connie Keiper has had a series of health problems over the last few months. 7 Buzz & Maureen have been such good friends to GWRRA, attending so many events, helping when asked, and adding to our Chapter in so many different ways. We couldn t have found a more deserving couple for 2019! For these reasons we HONOR YOU!!! GWRRA PA-H TEAM Just a quick note. I helped at the Tree Fest! My job was to check on the tree from the inside and to make sure all the ornaments were on good and tight. Just see me working. Then at the Christmas party I was guarding the presents and Norma came and picked me up instead of a present. I thought maybe she would hold me a little longer, but she put me down and picked a gift. I moved under the tree on another table where I was much safer. The rest of the month I will be helping Santa. If you look I have a new elf hat so I blend in better. I think I will be taking it easy after Christmas for about one week then on to Winter Thing. I have my outfits for Star Wars. I m too young for Star Trek. Then it is the beach to guard the rest of January, February, March and the first week of April. I will try again to get a picture with that pelican from SC-J. It just is afraid of dogs. Guess maybe I can sneak up behind him for a picture. Susky 7

12 FROM YOUR PA DISTRICT EDUCATOR Hi Everyone: With the arrival of the winter season, I think that most of us have prepared or are in the process of preparing the wings for winter storage. In case you do ride in the cold, remember that cold catalytic converters allow water to exit the exhaust system at stop signs and/or traffic lights. This water can freeze creating a very slick surface just about where your tires may be when coming to a stop or starting out. As you start to think about the 2019 riding season here are some things for you to ponder, as well as some SAFETY TIPS to think about during the long winter season: * You feel better about going to your doctor knowing that he has the proper medical training. * You would feel more confident going to traffic court knowing that your lawyer had the proper legal training. * YOU AND YOUR CO-RIDER WILL ENJOY MOTORCYCLING A LOT BETTER KNOWING THAT YOU HAVE THE PROPER RIDER EDUCATION AND TRAINING. Make a commitment to improve and practice your riding skills in 2019 and become involved in the Rider Education Program. Some Safety Tips to consider as you prepare your bike/trike and yourself for the upcoming riding season: Tip #1: Check/tighten the screws that hold the face-shield on your helmet to prevent them from ripping off in the breeze. Tip #2: The T-CLOCK inspection list that should be hanging on the wall next to the Wing. Follow it! Tip #3: One thing forgotten is that your riding skills will be sharply off. Amazing how a bit of down time can reduce your skills. When you first start back riding, take it easy for a bit and refresh your skills. Allow your body to remember how to ride. Tip #4: If you are a winter rider, WATCH out for everything, remember no one will be looking for a motorcycle so early in the year, take nothing for granted, THEY MAY NOT SEE YOU. Again, we encourage everyone to get involved in the Rider Education program to improve your riding skills and knowledge so that you and your passenger enjoy the ride and return home safely. It was a fun session with a commitment to add tools to your tool boxes to help you with the tasks ahead. We helped demonstrate some commonly heard scenarios with some skits, thanks to my Presidential Assistants Bob and Nan Shrader, Bruce and Barb Beeman, Jere and Sherry Goodman, Chantal and Francois Séguin, and Tom and Renee Wasluck. Our skit master Ray and Sandi Garris, Director Emeritus, helped put some of the fun ideas together. Our new Director of Rider Education, Susan and George Huttman, helped as they answered questions about Rider Education. It was great time spent together and I look forward to next year and including all the Program Directors! Planning for our future is critical! To quote a great phrase, Failing to plan is planning to fail. I am committed, as is TEAM GWRRA, to assist all levels of management of GWRRA who give their time and commitment to serve our Membership to enhance their experiences. To accomplish that I am going to take the next few issues of Insight and answer the questions that were asked at the forum. I want to thank all of you who submitted your questions. What has GWRRA done to appeal to those targeted new owners? We were looking at GWRRA actually before the launch of the new bike and decided we needed to focus on another group of GWRRA Members. Honda s target audience highlights that our thinking was in the correct direction. Our new focus was to create riding groups for those who may not have enough time or the desire to participate in Chapter life. Although Chapter life builds those lifetime bonds of friendships, for some it just doesn t work, or it doesn t work for them right now. They love to ride, and they are looking for the getaway. We believe the Chapter Ride Coordinator will continue to provide rides and outings to those that participate with their Chapter, and that is perfect. For that other group, we created a newly enhanced Ride Coordinator position at the District level to provide opportunities for those who have limited time and are interested in the ride or outing, single day ride or multiple day. We look at the District because it has a broader reach to the Membership. We want that District Ride Coordinator to work with the District Team to reach out to all Members in the District and invite them to ride. Some could coordinate with a Chapter ride, but all will be invited to any District ride. It may take a team to handle the position to maximize great riding to meet that need. Share the routes with all through all forms of communication (websites, social media, s, and phone trees). Remember that we accept all riders so long as they meet the requirements of the motorcycling laws in your District. This is how we reach out to those who have bought that new bike and meet the targeted audience that Honda was after, and all can be the new life for GWRRA. Question: Communication has been a problem for years. Seems we are working to address that but how do we correct the inconsistency of sharing of information? Wow, what a great question! If I had a complete answer I would have completely solved this, and yes it has been a focus for the last 2+ years to improve the passing of information. I firmly believe that information is not power until you share it and show others how they can grow, learn, and benefit from the information. Who do we share this information with? Unless it is clearly marked that it is for your eyes only, the communication needs to be shared to all, leaders and Members. It could be labeled to just leaders, then that is the requested level of communication. 13
