Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Region B District of PA Director s Corner CHAPTER W NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2018 by Gary & Mable Washington Hello W Family, Remember When? We want to say that winter weather is here again. We enjoyed the few days of relief and saw several motorcycles out. Of course the trike is still in the garage. Our members refuse to let the winter blues creep into their spirits. There are events planned and dinners to go to so we can stay connected. Of course part of the planning is to EAT WELL and have a great time with friends. PA W is continuing to work and update the riding/event schedule monthly in order to provide opportunities for others to join us in our FUN. The trike is scheduled to go to Seltzer s on February 12 th. We are anxious to see positive results from the experience. We know it will take them a little time to trace the problem, but it will be worth it, if fixed forever!!!! We do the riding season on the trike but our Event Coordinator and MEC are working hard at keeping the winter blues away. If you see something that interests you, please contact one of them. I have been checking the lottery numbers and haven t seen W on the board yet. We re waiting for the BIG DAY! Update Our 2 nd and 3 rd room has been empty since after Christmas break. The grandson informed Mable and I that he was going to be coming to visit for the weekend on the 16 th. We will enjoy his visit and give him goodie bag when he leaves again. His sister has not said anything about visiting so the bed is still unmade. (Smile) Garrett informed us a few weeks ago that he has to be on the road for work over the next month (new projects). He said that they would get busier on THEIR home again soon. He has been doing what he can inside. Stay warm and be careful with all the winter weather, Gary & Mable Washington Chapter Directors

DOWN WITH THE GROUNDHOG As you may already know that Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow and he said that there will be six more weeks of winter. Last year I said to just shoot him and put everyone out of the anxiety. Since I loved to hunt and have eaten wild game many times Mable and I found the below recipe on the internet: Braised Groundhog Recipe Braised in mustard and white wine: A Groundhog?! Time for a full disclosure. This is not the first groundhog I ve eaten. As such, I ve learned a few things along the way. Like, for instance, groundhogs have musk glands in their armpits. YOU MUST REMOVE THESE IF YOU DON T WANT TO THROW UP FROM THE STINK OF BRAISED MUSK GLANDS AS THEY BOIL AWAY! If you have difficulty finding (or shooting) groundhog, you can substitute two rabbits or six pounds of chicken. Braised Groundhog Recipe Level of Difficulty: Easy Serving Size: 6 servings Ingredients: 1 (5 to 6 pound) groundhog, cut into 6 serving pieces 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 3/4 cups reduced sodium chicken broth 2 medium onions, chopped 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped 3/4 stick unsalted butter, cut into tablespoon size pieces 2 1/2 cups dry white wine 1/3 cup Dijon mustard 1/4 cup whole grain mustard Directions: 1. Rinse the groundhog pieces, remove any fat, and cut out the glands underneath the front legs and armpits, then pat the meat dry. Season with 1 tablespoon Kosher salt and 1 teaspoon pepper. 2. Heat the oil in a large heavy skillet, then brown the meat, in batches. This will take about 5 minutes per batch. Transfer the meat to a medium heavy pot. Reserve the skillet. 3. Add the broth to the pot. 4. Pour off any fat from skillet, then add the onions, garlic, thyme, and 3 tablespoons butter and cook over medium heat, stirring and scraping up any brown bits, until onions are softened. This will take about 5 minutes. 5. Add the wine and boil until the liquid is reduced by half. This will take about 8 minutes. 6. Pour the mixture over the groundhog. Cover the pot and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Braise the groundhog until it is very tender. This will take 1 1/2 to 2 hours. 7. Transfer the groundhog to a serving dish and keep warm. 8. Bring the liquid in the pot to a boil and reduce it to about 3 cups. This will take about 10 minutes. Whisk in the mustards. Remove the pan from the heat and add the remaining 3 tablespoons butter, swirling the pot until incorporated. Season sauce with salt and pepper and pour over the groundhog.

Assistant Chapter Directors Eldon & Kerri Mickel GWRRA PA-W FAMILY & FRIENDS, Members and Friends we find ourselves closer to hitting the road again for riding season. Coming up next weekend Feb. 18th we will be going to Seven Springs Ski Resort for food, fellowship and a nice afternoon of spectating. We should leave from Cogo's at Rt 30 W and 56 Pensyl Hollow Road to leave at 1:30. Should take approx. 1 hour 15 min. travel time. They have a very nice lounge and observation area and of course great food and drink. Hope the crew that went to Winter Thing in Ocean City had a great time and made some new friends. Will be expecting details at the gathering, but not too many. Ice Cream Ride will be Tuesday the 20th at the Meadows at 6:30. Gathering will be the 24th at Kelly's. March is kind of a quiet month for us. Lancaster Dinner Theater with Ring of Fire is the 17th. Contact Peggy if interested. Ice Cream Ride will be March 20th at the Meadows. On the 24th the Gathering. Kerri and I have informed Goo and Mable that our roles as Asst. Directors will be continuing but at a scaled back level. We both enjoy the roles but feel the need to scale back a bit. We will continue to ride and participate at a limited capacity. Eldon & Kerri Mickel Asst. Directors GWRRA PA-W Sending lots of get-well wishes out to Dave & Sara who both have been in and out of the hospital and under the weather for quite a while. Wishing you both a speedy recovery.

Membership Enhancement : PEGGY GRIMM & Ed Steele Poor little, shivering Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow. How? It was barely daybreak, and I don t think he was worried about looking around. He had his mind on being warm. I know in his heart he was wishing us all an early spring, but his shadow ruled. Six...let me reiterate that s i x more weeks of winter. Ugh. These last few days have definitely felt like it, too. We shall carry on, because we can t change Mother Nature s ways. January, we finished up our after-holiday parties. We had 18 of our Chapter W members attend the Chapter S Winter Party at the Williamsburg Farm Complex Building on the thirteenth. There was a great appetizer feast, and we followed our noses to that table just as soon as we arrived. We did, however, save room for the delicious family style Swiss steak supper. We were also entertained by an Elvis music performer, Phil McCaulley, who did a great job. Drrrrrrrrrrrrum roll please.i was one of the lucky winners of the 50/50 drawing. I took my winnings and spent it on a silent auction. So, all in all, I came home with three items. Can you say fat rat? Thank you so much Chapter S for a great and fun evening.

Unfortunately, because of the bad weather, our monthly ice cream run was canceled on January 16. However, that day was Ed s birthday, and he was determined to please his belly with some ice cream. He and I went ahead and went to the Meadows. We almost missed the business being open, as he was going to close early because of the snow. But, we got our ice cream. It was yummy, even in the cold snowy weather. Our Chapter monthly gathering was January 27, and we eagerly talked about our riding schedule for the riding season. I believe we have a lot of nice places to journey to and explore. Now, Mother Nature needs to read our schedule and cooperate with our plans. I would like to extend my gratitude to those that signed up to attend the Ring of Fire show at the Dutch Apple Theater in March. I do believe we will thoroughly enjoy it. Football has now come to an end, and Nascar will soon be in full swing. This means it s closer to time to bring out the parked babies, and enjoy the wind in our faces. I m ready for that warm weather and traveling. We can hope Punxsutawney Phil was wrong, and winter won t be the entire next six weeks. A girl can hope! By the time you are reading this newsletter, we will be in Ocean City, Maryland at the Winter Thing. I will have all the details for you in the next newsletter. So, until next month, everybody enjoy February, in spite of the weather. I hope everyone gets to have a pleasant and memorable Valentine s Day, as well. Peggy Grimm and Ed Steele Chapter W MEC

District Director Notes: February, 2018 Wow is it February, time to write a newsletter. Time sure does fly when you are having FUN! We know it has only been a month since we became Pennsylvania District Directors. This month is the drawing for the District Raffle tickets. We hope you have a winning ticket! A list of winners will be announced weekly through PEDS. At our District Team Meeting, the team decided that the month of February was a good time for the drawing. It gives everyone something to look forward to during the winter. So, this coming year, District Raffle tickets will be distributed to the Chapters to sell. Thanks for all your help in selling the tickets! There are many events planned by the District and Chapters for Take time to look at the District website for the flyers. 10 Assistant District Directors: Hello Everyone: This is our first newsletter as your new Asst. District Directors, and we thought we would share you a little about ourselves. Shirley & I have been married since 1977 (OMG)!!!!, we have 2 children a son Mike and a daughter Nicole; we have 3 grandsons & 1 great grandson 13 months. I started riding motorcycles when I was 15 on a dirt bike. I got my first street legal motorcycle when I was 16 (It was a poor man s work transportation.) Fast forward 29 years On our 25th Wedding Anniversary we went to Maui, while walking the beach, we came across a shop renting all kinds of vehicles and saw a Harley so= tail. Jokingly, I said we should rent it and ride the island, of course, she said yes. I was shocked, as she had never road with me before. But I wasn t going to let this opportunity pass by. We rode all day, including to the top of the islands Volcano, Haleakala, with no helmet, and in flip-flops. I know, I Know, we know better now and ride ATGATT We both had a blast and knew then we were bitten by the Biker Bug. Not long after we returned home we bought our first bike a Goldwing; it wasn t long after we had our Black 2002 GL1800, which we re still riding today with more than 126,000 miles on it. Shirley and I both participate in the levels program, she is a Master Level IV and I m a Senior Master Level IV. We have held many positions in GWRRA from Chapter Couple of the Year to Chapter Directors, and many others at the District, Region, and the National level as the Asst. Directors of the Membership Enhancement for the Chapter of the Year Programs. I m a Senior University Trainer, and ITCP certified Instructor, currently the Chapter Treasure, Chapter Web Master, PED coordinator, in addition we re your PA Asst. Directors, overseeing Chapters A. B. K. V Y. It is February, and as of writing this article, we don t know if the ground hog did or didn t see his shadow. But we know Spring is just around the corner and will be riding soon. So be safe riding and we will see you soon. In closing we want to say Thank You to Harold & Diane Jackson for the opportunity to serve on the District Team, and a heads ups to Chapters A. B. K. V & Y, we will be stopping by to see you soon. Meanwhile if you have a question or need help with anything feel free to give us a call. 11 Pa district EDUCATOR Hello everyone. In the last newsletter, I talked about the data available on the Rider Education website. I also explained how to enter this site so you can review your own information. This month, I would like to explain the difference between Safe Mileage and High Mileage. Safe Mileage begins on the day you join GWRRA. Your safe mileage increases for every mile you ride your motorcycle without having a reportable accident. If you have an accident which is reportable for insurance claim or by law enforcement as an accident, your mileage reverts back to 0 miles. The program awards a pin for every 5,000 miles safely ridden. We have many members with 100,000 miles in the program. High Mileage is just for bragging rights. This is not a GWRRA program. High Mileage indicates the number of miles you have accumulated since you began riding a motorcycle legally. Safe miles bars awarded in 50,000 increments are displayed from a head pin. I must say it again, This is not a GWRRA program. However, we have members in the Pennsylvania District with over 400,000 miles and they are still adding up the miles! In the coming months, I will explain what the Levels Program is, how the program works, and why it is important to all of us as GWRRA members. It is up to you to monitor and update your information for the website, but I am here to help when needed. Please feel free to contact me when you have questions or need other assistance. Doug Motter Pennsylvania District Educator

National News: Submitted by Anita Alkire President of GWRRA It s a Wonderful and Exciting New Year! Welcome to our new adventure. We have been busy working to bring our Officers a great new tool in a familiar wrapper. Insight will change its tone for The articles will be helpful tips, new information, and useful things that you will be able to use in your role as Officers. For some of you, welcome to your new position and thank you for stepping forward. We appreciate you! Others are back, and we are so very pleased that you ve decided to stay and serve the Members for another year. Thank you for your dedication. My first tip to you in 2018 The NEW Chapter Gathering/Get Together The name is the first key. It s our time to get together and share time together, information, safety tips, and where we are going next. That is really what goes onto an agenda. Let s remember an agenda is to keep your thoughts straight and make certain you cover what you wanted covered. When and where do I plan/create the agenda? This should happen at your business meeting that takes place within a week before the gathering. It s time for business, finances, and so forth, but it s also time for the TEAM to share what they want to contribute to the agenda. Mix it up each month; don t do the same thing over and over. Keep them guessing! That will keep them coming back for more. Chapter Directors, you take the lead; you re like an MC. Watch the awards shows - the MC welcomes everyone and introduces the other speakers. Your speakers are your Membership Enhancement Coordinator, to welcome those new folks sitting with your greeters. Maybe the greeters introduce those new folks. Your Ride Coordinator should talk about rides for the upcoming month and get ideas where folks want to go. Remember that with this new emphasis, it may take a bit to get everyone participating. Because of that, it is imperative that the leadership is participating. The expression, where the Chapter Director goes the Chapter goes, proves itself true every time. What about a safety talk? We all have safety tips we can share. We just need a good question tossed out to start giving our opinions and have a great discussion. We re going to challenge the Masters to step forward to lead those discussions. Our Master Tour Riders and Co-Riders have demonstrated their commitment to safety and are just the right folks to lead this discussion. You can assign them for the year or month by month, whatever works best for you. Now, it s Show Time! Fun is the name of the game. Making everyone feel welcome and accepted is critical for longevity. Informal is our new normal. I was always accused of having organized chaos for my gatherings, but we sure had fun, and everyone was included. It s your meeting, be creative, have fun, and the others will, too.

My 2nd tip for you The New Ride Coordinator Embrace the Ride Coordinator position. This IS NOT a modified Chapter Educator!!! I have heard the feedback, well we ll just continue the same as we have been, she ll never know. I promise you, I will hear about it. I have hearing like a Mom. The philosophy of GWRRA has to adapt to the new rider, new Gold Wing, so we are still the organization of choice to these new Gold Wing Riders/Owners. Those of us that are so excited to ride this new machine are excited for just that, the ride. JR and I are headed for the Press Ride for Honda on January I did have to laugh, that on the information they sent they said to wear comfortable clothes for the long ride. Day 1 is 230 miles what, that s before lunch, correct??? If you have not gone onto Honda s website and looked at their new videos, it s a must. Look at their focus; a rider who has a little bit of time and rides the new Gold Wing to visit friends or family so they get a bit of adventure with their transportation. That is the new Member to GWRRA. We must provide them what they have time for, a brief ride, a longer ride, a multi-day ride. We ll share safety tips along the way. You see, this new position is part of our future and is critically important. What am I asking of this Officer? Plan fun adventures. Whether it be a day ride or longer, it s an adventure. We ll encourage all riders to understand and then adopt GWRRA s safe riding position, because we have saved lives and want to continue to do that. So, if you question their choice in riding gear and we usually do that in our heads or to a small group, then change that habit. It s important that you all share with them why you chose the gear you wear. Not putting their choice down, just sharing a different point of view. So when I hear that I m killing Rider Education I call foul! I want you all, each Officer, each Member, to take on this important message and share from your point of view. We have come together for the bike, we stay for the friendships as my good friend Bob Johnson says, but we can only keep those friendships if they are still around. Jim Waddell, an amazing rider and dear friend, would announce at each rider meeting that his safety was my responsibility. He actually said, My safety is your responsibility. That message has stayed with me for the last 18 years and I say to you today, your safety is my responsibility and I challenge all Officers to adopt this message and share. Until next month, ride safe and ride often. Anita & JR Alkire President@gwrra.org

Hello Gold Wingers: My name is Mikel Murray from IN G-2. The pic is of my wife Belinda and grandchildren Tyson and Erica at 4 corners. Belinda and I are in charge of the United Sidecar Association 40 th National Rally The reason I am writing is I know that some of your members may be thinking about adding a third wheel to extend their riding years. There is always a trike, but a sidecar is another option to get that third wheel. It makes the bike stable and it can haul your kids, or grandkids or your pets. Plus, they have lots of room for storage. I would like to invite everyone to come to the rally. Put us on your ride schedule or send this to all your members or maybe include it in your newsletter. There will be all kinds of bike and sidecar combinations to view and compare. If any of your members are thinking about adding a sidecar. The rally is in Rising Sun, IN right along the Ohio River. Complete rally information can be seen at Thank you, Mikel Murray
