Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Region B District of PA Director s Corner CHAPTER W NEWSLETTER JULY 2018 by Gary & Mable Washington Hello W Family, Mable and I have been out riding and I m having a great time. I enjoy the air all around me and seeing the landscape. Mable would rather have air-conditioning of the car but puts up with me and my little wishes. It was a little hot for about 2 weeks and we stayed close to home and rode in the early evening hours only. (except for the Martinsburg parade) We did represent PA W well and the committee was much appreciative of our participation. I believe they had the largest group of spectators that we have had the pleasure to present since we have been doing the parade thing. We also attended Chapter T s first bug ride which ended up being the most pleasant temperature day for a long time. It was about 60 miles and we were welcomed back to the park for a great picnic lunch with lots of desserts. (Mable was watching me) Mable and I must thank our W members who always try to help us. At the park. they had speed bumps and Mable rode around them because my trike is low. Buzz and Gary suggested getting the forks pumped up ha, ha. (They had their manuals out and all trying to find a solution; what great friends. Mable said she will call the shop this week and see what they suggest. Saturday, while we were enjoying the outdoors Gennifer was taking a good friend and her first son to college. We had a going away pizza party at our house for him Friday evening and they appeared to be ALL READY. However, Gennifer said mother had a mother melt-down when taking stuff into the room. I m sure they will both be OK in time. HOUSE UPDATE: Kamberly (12 th grader) returned from the visit in Colorado with her mother and friends. She is at her dad s house and looking for employment. Savanah and her boyfriend are still in the apartment in town. Warren got a vehicle and still in the 3 rd bedroom. He is looking forward to returning to school in August. Garnell and Rex (his dog) have been visiting periodically but will soon be in Gary s mother s house. He still has an apartment in Lancaster area currently.

Happy Happy Birthday for all the June BABIES in attendance at gathering. When you see Goo ask him why he is watching me clean windshield? Heading out at Somerset s Bug Ride Gary & Mable Washington Chapter Directors We continue to keep any of our members who have a special need, in our thoughts and prayers.

Assistant Chapter Directors Eldon & Kerri Mickel GWRRA PA-W Family & Friends, Kerri and I recently attended All Chapters West hosted by PA-P we had a good time, good fellowship and great riding. Congratulations to Chapter P for a great event. Also we had the pleasure of taking a ride on Sat. June 30th with Ed & Peggy; good food, good friendship and lots of heat. Ed passed the test. Hope all that attended Martinsburg Parade enjoyed the ride along with Chapter T Bug Run. We were not able to attend either event as Tuesday I had a meeting to attend and Wednesday we left for Wisconsin to see our grand and great granddaughters and we didn't return until the 8th. We had an enjoyable time with the girls. July 14th Gary Stockenus will be escorting us to Bill's Biker Barn in Bloomsburg, Pa. 8 a.m. meet at Turkey Hill in East Freedom. Rain or shine. Rain, it will be 4 wheels, Shine on three. Gary assures us this is a great experience. Tuesday the 17th is the evening Ice Cream Ride. Yogi will be leading that and meeting at Cottles Corner CoGo's on Rte. 26 north of Everett at 5:30. We will be going to Saxton. Don't forget the Gathering is moved up this month due to All Chapters East. The Gathering will be on the 21st at Kelly's at the same time 9:00. For those going to All Chapters East on a day pass, your registration has to be done by July 14th. August 4th at 1:00 at Everett Fire Hall PA-W's Annual Bug Run will take place. I need someone to do a route as I will be tied up with the fire co at our gun bash. Anyone interested please contact me ASAP. If no one contacts me by the 14 th, someone will get drafted. August 11th is the ride to Hobo's for a Steak Dinner leaving Bedford CoGo's at 3:00. I'm sure if anyone has room for Ice Cream we could find some after the dinner. August 12 th, Dr. Doolittle s Roadside Café, meet at Hoss's at 9 a.m. We will be doing lunch and Ice Cream and a great ride. Let's remember all four members who are under the weather and hope they soon are able to ride with us. Eldon & Kerri Mickel Asst. Directors PA-W

Membership Enhancement : PEGGY GRIMM & Ed Steele Golden rays illuminate the serene cyan sky.it's perfect summer weather, with one exception..h U M I D I T Y! This heat dome we've been under needs to be cracked. I love the summer heat, but I definitely do not like the humidity. We ve had a few rainstorms to help cool things down, but it doesn t last long until the humidity returns. In any event, I can t believe we are already in July. I don t have much to report for June. Ed and I didn t partake in a lot of things because he still had some restrictions and we had prior plans. June 2 was the Wings for Warriors Ride and it was held at Somerset Alliance Church. We had six members attend, on two trikes and in one car. We were the car because we had to follow due to Ed's restrictions. It was a nice ride and picnic meal. Wings for Warriors motorcycle ride and all proceeds benefit the LEEK Hunting & Mountain Preserve where wounded and disabled veterans can take part in the hunting and fishing opportunities. This was our second time participating. It s a nice event and definitely represents a great cause.

June 4, some of our members took off to Americade in Lake George, N.Y. We really wanted to go but Ed wasn't allowed to ride a trike yet. Thanks to Kathy, I was taken along with a day by day text. I was informed they found some rough roads and the weather wasn't the greatest. We're very glad they made it back home safely. On June 10, we enjoyed our monthly eating out as a group at Marzoni s. Following that, five of us went to the Meadows and enjoyed ice cream for dessert. In the picture, Joan Tew is hiding behind me. I don t know why she s afraid of cameras. They don t hurt you.

I realize this isn t Gold Wing related, but it might entice any of you who want to take a mystery trip with Bollman s, as well, and have a good time like we had. On the 14th, Ed and I went with a couple of our friends on a day mystery trip with the bus company. We ended up at Inner Harbor in Baltimore. We were given a tour by Francis Scott Key (okay, an impersonator, but it was like the real thing). We were educated about the area and times of Francis Scott Key, and got to shop. It was Flag Day so there being flags everywhere, was very patriotic.

All Chapters West was June 15 & 16. I d like to thank Eldon and Kerri for representing Chapter W. Of course, we can t miss a month without having our ice cream gathering. Twelve of us ventured to Milky Way in Claysburg and it was refreshing to eat ice cream on a warm summer s day. And, we had our monthly gathering at Kelly s on June 23 where we continued to discuss our ride schedule and activities. That wraps up our June. Now that Ed is off his restrictions, I am hoping we will have a little more active July. I hope everyone enjoyed the 4 th of July. Happy Birthday to America. Now that we are in the throes of summer, I know that more of us will be more active, so stay safe and cool, and most of all have fun. Until next month, Peggy Grimm and Ed Steele Chapter W MEC

District Director Notes: July, 2018 Many of us have been wondering where is summer? I guess summer is here; as I write this article the temperature is 90 degrees. And guess what; summer is on time. The first day of summer is June 21 st. Happy 4 th of July to everyone! The 4 th of July is a celebration and often referred to as Independence Day. Thank you to our military and first responders that keep us safe so, we can enjoy our independence and freedom. We just attended All Chapters West. Thank you, PA-P, for hosting the event and for a job well done. The weekend had a great ride, good food and FUN! Those that attend had time for socializing and were able to sit around campfires. The weather cooperated and we had a dry weekend. For those that did not attend, hopefully, you will consider attending next year s All Chapters West or go to All Chapters East this year. if you have time to volunteer. Thank you if you have already volunteered! Have you looked at the PA District events calendar? There are many great rides and events listed; you and your chapter should consider attending an event that is listed. We have noticed there are not many events listed on the events calendar as there were at the beginning of the year. We know many chapters have FUN events and outings planned. Let s get your chapter events listed so everyone is aware as to what is happening in the district. It is important for all of us to remember that riding and socializing are an important part of chapter life. So, let s go ride! Remember to always ride safe! If you are not signed up to attend All Chapters East, July th at the Old Mill Stream Campground, Lancaster, PA please contact Jim Burr payellowtrike@gmail.com. Our host chapter PA-B has a great weekend planned. Have you made plans to attend Wing Ding 40? It is the National Rally being held in Knoxville, TN. The last couple of years Wing Ding has been on the western half of the USA. Knoxville is a great area to visit, is a great area to ride and it is practically in our backyard. Harold and Diane Jackson PA District Directors jackson2@zoominternet.net (814) Pennsylvania has been selected to sell tickets on Wednesday, August 29 th at Wing Ding. We need a few more volunteers to fill time slots. Please give us a call at or us at jackson2@zoominternet.net

Assistant District Directors: WHY CHANGE? Most of us dislike change and most don t accept it well. I do believe change is good, even when it seems tough we are always learning and growing. Sometimes change happens slowly. Sometimes it seems to happen very fast. But remember, if we like it or not, change will happen. So, the best thing to do is embrace it and look for the positive. Change moves us out of our comfort zone. All of our opinions, mindsets, and beliefs are tested. We need to find new ways to articulate who we are and what we believe. We like to hold onto the past and you always hear we have done it this way for years and it works o.k. Why do we need to change it? If you don t try change, how do you know things are o.k.? We get to experience more and broaden our minds. We have the opportunity to embrace new experiences and other ideas. New perspectives and opportunities are in front of use. Every time you meet someone new or read a new article or listen to a new speaker, anything you do you may not realize it, but you change. If in no other way, more than being a little knowledgeable, when you are too old to embrace change, you re just TOO OLD! We get to find out just who we really are. As we go through transitional change, our mind expands and gives us the opportunity to view things in different ways. When we are open to the possibility of learning that not everything we did in the past is suited for the future, that is when change is working. We become more flexible and adaptable. Being flexible and adaptable gives us the ability to embrace chaos in a way that makes things acceptable and achievable and it gives us more confidence. We begin to thrive in new situations because we have proven to ourselves that we can handle whatever comes our way and be able to grow from it. We start to have more fun. When we are open to change, we are open to saying Yes. We are also open to more experiences and opportunities. This gives us the opportunity to meet more people and start to realize that everyone has a view and if it is different than yours, it could be a time for you to change how you look at things. It could be the time for personal growth for you. As we communicate, we may find that the change may be a lot better than what we were doing in the past. This lets us experience more of life s pleasures. As I said at the beginning of this article, most of us don t like change (myself included,) change needs to be embraced in a positive way by everyone involved. We all need to look forward and not into the past. We need to take time to enjoy all the opportunities that are given to us and not just the ones we think are needed. Forrest (Brownie) & June Statler PA Assistant District Directors fstatz@comcast.net Congratulations to our PA District Couple of the Year Dave & Cindy Marconi from PA I.

Pa district EDUCATOR Hello everyone. I would like to change the topic this month. I recently encountered something that I have been teaching in CPR/First Aid courses. I want to share an experience about emotional consideration. I was at work recently and was called on my two-way radio to go to the main office for a medical emergency. As I started to enter the building, an individual came rushing out the door calling out that we needed an AED. I looked at him and told him that we have none. He claimed we did. So, I told him to check the building s lower level for one mounted on the wall. Meanwhile, I continued up a flight of stairs to the dispatch office. Upon entering, I found a number of people arguing about want to do for the gentleman lying on the floor. I interrupted the bickering and asked if anyone called 911. Then I started to check on the person on the floor. It was someone I had known for years. He looked up at me and said, Hi Doug. I asked for the room to be cleared so that he could be properly checked for a medical problem; I proceeded to evaluate his condition. While talking with him having him answer questions I realized that he was having a stroke. This is when I started to feel a little helpless. Here I am someone who has had many years of training and all I could do is sit beside him and comfort him until EMS arrived. After my co-worker was taken to the hospital, I started to feel sick and very disturbed. Realizing what was happening to me, I found one of the supervisors and asked him if we could talk. He was also feeling very emotional; he was the first one to arrive at the office to help. As one of my former CPR/First Aid students, he understood and shared my sense of powerlessness. We talked and it helped! Emotions are something that should not be ignored. Negative emotional responses may include: 1- Feeling abandoned or helpless 2- Recalling the event over and over 3- Self-doubt or a feeling that you have not done something correctly 4- Having difficulty concentrating 5- Experiencing heaviness in the chest 6- Suffering with an upset stomach 7- Having difficulties sleeping or having nightmares If you experience these or similar problems, you need to share your feelings. Talk to someone you can trust to listen without judgement. Get back to a normal routine as soon as possible. If the problems persist, you may want to seek professional help. It is important to recognize - and properly react to - the emotions that may result following an emergency situation. Remember: Be seen and have Fun getting there. Doug Motter, Pennsylvania District Educator

National News: Submitted by Anita Alkire President of GWRRA First Quarter Review AND some New Programs As Officers in GWRRA we have a responsibility to GWRRA, each other, and to our Members. This responsibility is to respect each other, hold each other up when needed, have fun with one another and to be good peers, sharing information, ideas and friendship. We aren t going to be best friends with every Officer, but we owe respect as outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), Officer Handbook, and the Standards of Conduct in the Handbook. A Member doesn t really understand our roles unless they have walked in those shoes. Remember to always praise down and up, but always bring concerns or complaints up. The Members shouldn t hear this as they can t relate. They are also the folks that you will want to talk with about stepping forward and if all they have heard is negative, they will be very reluctant. Also use your peer network; they have walked in your shoes. Lastly, remember that where the Officers go, the Chapter or District go. So be a strong and active leader and you ll have a strong and active Chapter or District. Besides, going is the fun part! June Updates Officer Handbook I said it would be out by the end of May. Well, it is in final proof as I write this. I am really pleased with the outcome and so are those who have read it and are helping me proof it. By the time you read this, we should have made the announcement that it is complete and published. Watch for an eblast and check Oconnect. Dealer Program All forms are complete and will be on Oconnect by the time you read this. Below is a reminder of the program. GWRRA will provide to a dealer a special Membership application to GWRRA. The Dealer will be giving a 4-month free Membership to GWRRA when that person purchases a new or used Gold Wing, cruiser or touring bike from their dealership. They will have a special new member line to send the application to Home Office. We will immediately process the new Membership and then send it to the District Director so they can share it with their District MEP who will contact that Member and get them involved. The sooner we offer that new Member the opportunity to join us for a ride or education opportunity, the sooner they will feel and experience all the benefits of Membership.

Home Office will then follow up with the Dealer and offer to send them Wing World Magazines to the dealership monthly and more materials if they wish. What we are asking of you is to talk with your favorite dealer. Share with them this idea and see if they are interested. We will have all the material they need on our website soon and you can even take it in with you when you talk with them. If they want to participate: 1. Send an to with the dealer s information and contact person. 2. Give us your name and Member number so we know where this is coming from and can enter you into our Thank You drawing. 3. Let the Dealer know that we will be highlighting them as a Supporting Dealer and we will feature them on our website and the Gold Book. This starts with you and your relationship as that is always the best way. We, Home Office, will also be reaching out to dealers about 30 days after the launch to give you the first opportunity to talk with your Dealer. Membership Award Program All forms are complete and ready and will be on Oconnect by the time you read this. Anita & JR Alkire President@gwrra.org
