Call Shirley (717) RIDER EDUCATION NEWS Doug Motter, Chapter Educator Hi everyone, I have a few things that I would like to share with you. The weather has been wonderful for riding. I see more and more groups out riding. It s great to see. I caught myself looking to see what gear everyone had on. Also what for ride they were on. I always wonder where they are riding to. It is just one of the few things I think about when I see them. Does anyone think that way also? I like to see what gear they have on mostly. The different gear to match the ride. It s almost a guarantee A tee shirt and shorts don't count as gear but I ve seen a lot of that. When I see that I think road rash. Riders without helmets you can guess at that one. I believe we like to ride the way we feel. Being comfortable is what we try to do. Being closed in and feeling restricted we try not to do. But it happens. So ride safely and please wear all the gear. Protect yourself and the Co-rider also. Remember to be safe and have FUN getting there. Doug Motter < Newsletter editor> The chapter is in need of a new newsletter editor. If this is something you may like to do for the chapter, or just want some more information about to consider helping please call me. 5 The month of July is here already! The Chapter has been on the go with events, rides and more! After the Gathering in June we went to the Gladfelter Mansion. Very interesting as we all learned and enjoyed the tour. I missed the Mansion last year at Christmas and hope the Chapter adds that to our December Christmas this year. Some have already been on Vacation on their bikes. If you have we look forward to you sharing the excitement from your trip. Rhonda & I plan on the same in the middle of July to get away on the bike for a few days. Looking forward to sun filled days and safe riding! Roll for Dough we have 9 points and need more! In the future we would like to make plans to visit PA A, PA S, PA Y, MD F and a few more. All Chapters East in September hosted by PA K will be in Gettysburg. PA V is going to be there so join the fun weekend that is planned with rides, ice cream & good food! If you know of an event with a Chapter that would be of interest please let us know so a ride can be put together. Somewhere you want to go let Wood know. There are some open dates on the calendar. Saturday June 25th we enjoyed the ride to the Balloon Festival. Thank You to Mike & Judy for the hospitality at their home on the way. We enjoyed Hot Dogs & Hamburgers on the grill with all the other goodies we bought along. The House Tour, Bee Tour was very interesting! Take a look at the web site for pictures. Ride Safe & Look Twice as Motorists are not always looking for you! Barry and Rhonda Blyler, Asst. Chapter Directors We are still in need of someone to do our monthly newsletter. This is not a hard job. Most of the job is cut and paste, although you do need to do some research to get the articles needed to for District, Region and National news. I take care of adding the advertising and finishing the final newsletter to prepare for print. I am filling in as temporary Editor until someone can take it over. Please consider stepping up. As some of you may not know, the newsletter is required by GWRRA. I will show you all you need to know and help you get started! Brenda Milberry

Bob & Nancy s address for cards is: 4284 John Ln, Glen Rock, PA Nancy wanted to convey this to the whole chapter: Bob and I would like to thank everyone for the cards and kind words for the loss of my Dad. It s the support from the Goldwing family that makes the loss a little more bearable. A special thank you to Shirley, who drove me to my parents home when I needed a ride. Thank you, Nancy Passing this along for those that remember Yvonne the Lady in Purple. Her and her husband Charlie were charter members of our chapter. T. Yvonne Leiphart, October 27, June 21, "Vonnie, 89, York, passed away on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at York Hospital. She was the wife of the late Charles E. Leiphart to whom she was married for 63 years. Hello PA-V! Just returned from vacation and all is well. By the time you read this, we will be getting ready for the parade in New Freedom. This will be our first parade that Christine and I participated in. I hope all goes well. It will be a long day for some of us as we have Parahna Sports event that morning. I would like to take this opportunity to thank, in advance, everyone who will participate in the parade. Did you know that York County has a Hometown Heroes Program which offers discounts to many York County merchants / services. Here is a link for more information on the Hometown Heroes discount card: Thank you for your service. (Contributed by Jo Woodfill) summer. Dear Chapter, Bill's shoulder is coming along fine and we hope to be on the road more often in the near future. Took the trike over to have some bodywork done and also went on a lunch outing with no problem. So we know the limbs are functioning properly to handle the road. We hope everyone is having a great Bill & Erika Sprenkle, PA-V Couple of the Year

8 A Veteran Died Today He was getting old and paunchy And his hair was falling fast, And he sat around the Legion, Telling stories of the past. Of a war that he once fought in And the deeds that he had done, In his exploits with his buddies; They were heroes, every one. Though sometimes to his neighbors His tales became a joke, His buddies listened quietly They knew whereof he spoke. But we'll hear his tales no longer, For ol' Joe has passed away, And the world's a little poorer For a Veteran died today. He won't be mourned by many, Just his children and his wife. He lived a very ordinary, Quiet sort of life. He held a job and raised a family, Going on his way; The world won't note his passing, Though a Veteran died today. When politicians leave this earth, Their bodies lie in state, While thousands note their passing, And proclaim that they were great. Papers tell their stories From the time that they were young, But the passing of a Veteran Goes unnoticed, and unsung. Is the greatest contribution To the welfare of our land, A guy who breaks his promise And deceives his fellow man? Or the ordinary fellow Who in times of war and strife, Goes off to serve his country And offers up his life? The politician's stipend And the style in which he lives, Are often disproportionate, To the service that he gives. While the ordinary Veteran, Who offered up his all, Is paid off with a medal And perhaps a pension, small. News from Dave & Debbie Sorrick Dave Sorrick just went up to New York and took an ARC course to maintain his Masters level. He is now on his way to Georgia with a buddy for a BMW rally. They left about 5 this morning June 20, and will be home on Saturday. For Father's Day, Dave got a new GoPro and will be using it while down in Georgia riding. While I am staying at home, I will be busy with my sister at our horse farm with our new baby miniature horses, our 2 new big horses and the new baby goat we just got. We also have acquired a jersey milk cow. She has taken and bonded with 3 of our little bottle calves and relieved us of a lot of work. We are also getting lots of fresh eggs from our chickens. Life is good on the farm. Oh also, I will be taking the motorcycle classes and have my license in July! Finally. Just took a long time for my leg to get strong and feel stable enough after the knee replacement last year. But I am hoping that I will be driving the trike to our September functions myself Who said that getting older was boring? We have never been so busy in our whole lives. Each day something new and different is happening. Dave and Debbie Sorrick ALL CHAPTERS EAST REMINDER: This is a reminder in regards to All Chapters East! The time is running out to register for All Chapters East. Pa Chapter K is going to push the deadline to July 31st before you have to pay additional monies to register. All registrations have to be postmarked by August 10, Please pass this information on to everyone in your Chapters. There are still plenty of camp sites, cottages, and hotels available...the registration forms are on the District and Chapter K Website! Please register as soon as you can! We would love to see you all there! There will be lots of activities to do.. lots of fun!! If you have any questions, please feel free to call Rich and Wendy Wirt at Thank you, Rich Wirt It is not the politicians With their compromise and ploys, Who won for us the freedom That our country now enjoys. No, just a common Veteran, Now his ranks are growing thin, But his presence should remind us We may need his likes again. When countries are in conflict, We find the Veteran's part, Is to clean up all the troubles That the politicians start. If we cannot do him honour While he's here to hear the praise, Then at least let's give him homage At the ending of his days. Perhaps a simple headline In the paper that might say: "OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING, A VETERAN DIED TODAY." By Larry Vaincourt PLEASE pass On The Patriotism! YOU can make a difference. 9 Four Leaf Clover Tour The Four Leaf Clover Tour starts in Wytheville, Virginia. This is where we stayed. Each day we would ride one of the Clover Leafs, which is all scenic, twisty roads and State Parks. Our journey started on June 19 th leaving the Prince home and heading to Wytheville, Virginia. The day was perfect for riding heading to Fort Royal and going through the Blue Ridge Parkway, the scenic pull offs were so clear you could see for miles. We made a few stops, talked to a lot of people, and had a couple of laughs. On the way out I saw a bear. Monday - We looked at the weather and Mike & Todd said it looked like the best day for Grandfather Mts. N.C., to the Mile High Swinging Bridge. Mike & I been wanting to do this for some time, but weather conditions made it impossible, but not today. We went through 4 states to get there:, Virginia, W.V, Tenn., N.C. The ride to the top is 2.5 miles the first switch back made me a little nervous, some very tight switch backs and I was just holding on. About ¼ of the way up we stop at the Nature Museum and Christine & I just looked at each other. The Museum showed some very different wildlife surrounding the mountain. Back on the bikes and up to the top, lots of switch back but made it to the top. There was very little wind but lot of creaking walking across. Christine stayed back and the rest of us went across. Of course Mike & Todd had to go to the highest point and take pictures and have a social hour with Harley guys. They say that when the winds blow, the Mile High Swinging Bridge sings in the same way as a harmonica. Tuesday - Mt. Airy, N.C. to the small town of Mayberry, we had a lot of fun just walking and checking out the stores and gift shops. We went to The Old Jail and took a tour; Mike even sat behind Andy s old desk. There was one jail cell with 4 bunk beds and they said sometime there would be 15 to 20 women sharing one jail cell. Floyd s Barber Shop was still the original building, he passed away last month, and now his son is taking over the business. Opie s Candy Store and one very good Pastry shop. Mayberry s Squad Car was also going around town giving tours. We also found Aunt Bea s Rest. and stopped for ice cream. Wednesday We decide to do another one of the 4 leaf clovers MORE twisty roads, this took us to the back of the Dragon it s a part of Claw of the Dragon with loop trails through Wytheville, Galax, Marion, and Tazelwell. We stop at Shirley s Market sort of a one stop shop, just a little bit of everything. Todd needed some shirts. Our ride ended a little short because of storms moving in, rain gear on and back to the hotel. Thursday - We had to change the 4 leaf clover route because of the severe storms, so Mike & Todd check out the GPS, the maps, and decided to go the opposite way, good choice. Todd was leading and they found some great roads to ride. Hungry Mother State Park was a nice park stop. We took some pictures and talked to some Goldwingers. We kept finding all these nice blacktop roads, and of course Todd said he had this all planned out (sure). But then we came to an OH! NO!! gravel road, twisty and rough. All I could hear from Todd was stay right, stand left, watch stones center. This went on for 3 to 4 miles. Todd told Christine to just hold on, and I didn t say much of anything. To add to it, 2 deer ran out in front of Todd and a dog in the middle of the road. WOW!!!!! So much excitement. As Todd would say: It s all about the JOURNEY! Christine showed Todd an Oxxbox before leaving on vacation. It s a Portable Coffee Maker that takes K-Cups. So as the wonderful husband he is, bought her one. She brings it along and this thing is so cool, and Mike & I could go and get fresh coffee in the morning, afternoon and evenings. THANK YOU MY LOVE!! Lots of fun, laughter, excitement. Todd & Christine / Mike & Shirley

10 Ride with the GWRRA, August 3, 2013 Today was our first ride with the GWRRA, Chapter NC-D. We met at Ron Ayers parking lot in Greenville at 4 PM -- and left on time too. We were going to Hertford for dinner at Capt. Bob s BBQ and Seafood. In Bear Grass we were joined by another trike and a bike, and another trike joined us at the Rt. 17 intersection. So we headed East on Rt. 17 with 5 trikes, 4 motorcycles and one cage (that is a car). The weather was overcast and I was looking around to see if any rainclouds were approaching. After all, this was a rain on/rain off day and we passed through a few places, were we saw obvious signs of recent rain. But we arrived in a dry condition, were seated and had our meal. The food was, well, let s not talk about that. Some folks praised what they had, but I think they need to learn to make broiled food tasty. But the fellowship was great, good conversation, and a lot of fun. When it was time to leave, there was a long line to pay the bill. I went outside already and had a déjàvu moment. There were dark clouds all around, just like at the Wing Ding Convention!!! Were these clouds coming or going? Bill was still in line, so I thought, just in case, I get ready and get our gear out of the trunk, stow way what needs to be put in etc. I got the helmets out of the upper trunk and hung them on the handle bar by the neck straps (that was not a smart move, as it turned out). But then I could not get the lower trunk open, where the rain gear was. I felt the first drops and then all of a sudden came the downpour. I made a dash for cover. Nobody had time to get their gear on. So when Bill came out it had slowed down a bit, he got our rain gear and we suited up like everyone else. And then I remembered -- the helmets were still hanging on the handle bars! Bottoms up! Needless to say, they had collected a bit of water!! But we still needed to wear them. They were very refreshing. We all got underway in the rain. During the first break in showers we observed a beautiful rainbow. It rained about three more times, before the first group broke away for a visit to Dairy Queen in Williamston. Bill and I headed home on Rt. 17 and were greeted with another small shower in Washington. We got gas, a cup of coffee, and relaxed a moment before making the last few miles home. Erika Sprenkle

11 District Director: Greetings everyone! Would you believe that July 4th is just around the corner. Time is flying by too fast. We hope everyone has been putting on the miles on their motorcycles. We sure wish Mother Nature would consider turning off the rain machine soon. This past month Andi and I attended some very fun filled events. The Region B Campout was held at Rivers Edge Campground in Connellsville, PA June The PA District had five chapters represented, second only to Maryland's six chapters. The campground was very nice, Mother Nature cooperated which made it even nicer, and we had a wonderful time visiting with members of other region chapters. Thank you Ray and Cheryl Hartman, International SIG Coordinators, for putting this all together. Watch for more information about the Region B Campout for From what Ray and Cheryl said it is going to be in Central Pennsylvania next year. All Chapters West, hosted by Chapter N was held at Vacation Land Campground in Sandy Lake, PA June A great big thank you goes out to all the members of Chapter N for sponsoring this event. There were 128 people in attendance for the Saturday afternoon meal. Mother Nature didn't cooperate on Thursday but gave us a beautiful hot and sunny Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We had a great time visiting with our many friends from various chapters. The rides were very interesting and the meals provided by the campground were delicious. Walking around the campground in the evenings it looked like all the campfires were well attended. If anybody left there bored and hungry, then I don't know what else could have been done. One thing that Andi and I noticed at these events was the enthusiasm that chapter members had. Some chapters had a lot of members attending and some chapters had a few but everyone had a great time talking with other chapters and catching up with other friends they haven't seen in a while. We are firm believer that if you want your chapter to succeed, there must be enthusiasm from the leaders. Enthusiasm is contagious to other chapter members and your chapter will grow. While at the All Chapters event this past weekend, Marty Miller distributed CD's of the pictures that were taken at the Rally in State College. I believe he has a copy for all our 21 chapters. If you haven't received one from Marty, please contact him and I'm sure he will be glad to get one for your enjoyment. Thank you Mr. Miller for taking the time and effort in putting the slide show together for the Rally. Earlier in June we ed a survey about the PA District Rally to all of the chapter directors. Thank you to all of you who took the time to fill out the survey. We received some very interesting responses and we will keep all of them in mind when we are planning the District Rally for Don t forget to mark your calendar for May 18, 19 and 20, 2017 in State College for our PA Rally. For those chapters planning your ride schedules for next year, we have set the date for our annual District Team Meeting. It will be held in Altoona Pa on April 29, The meeting this year will be open to Chapter Directors, Assistant Chapter Directors, Chapter Educators, Chapter Treasurers and Chapter Membership Coordinators. We will be sending more information to you when all the details are finalized. If you have a suggestion on a topic that should be discussed at the district meeting please drop me a line and we will add it to the agenda. The District fund raiser ticket for the month of August is fast approaching. We are reminding Chapter Directors that we will need all tickets sold and unsold and money returned to us by July 16, Checks are to be made out to GWRRA PA District. We thank you for all your support in selling these tickets. By getting involved it this venture you are helping out both the district and your chapter treasury. Don t forget! You still have time to get your reservations in for All Chapters East. It will be held on September 16-18th at Drummer Boy Campground in Gettysburg PA. Discount registration deadline is July 15th but you can still register up to August 10, This is an easy way to pick up points for the District Roll For the Dough program. All you need to do is have 5 members from your chapter attend for the weekend or purchase a day pass for Saturday and you can earn points. If you don t do camping, no problem, there are plenty of cabins at the campground or check out a hotel in the area. All the information is on the District and Chapter K's website. Looking over the schedule of events, it looks like it will be a fun filled weekend. Let's see how many chapters we can have in attendance and fill the place up with GWRRA members. Hope to see you there. We are looking for a chapter to host 2017 All Chapters West. Anyone interested in hosting next year's western event please let us know. It is a bit of work but everyone that has held the event says it is well worth the effort. We have a chapter interested in hosting All Chapters East for 2017 so stay tuned for more information to follow. Rick & Andi Riek Pennsylvania District Directors District Website: Assistant District Directors: I hope you attended All Chapters West. Those that could not attend I hope you try to attend All Chapters East. Chapter N had a great weekend planned. It was the first time we used our toy hauler for what it was intended for. It was easier to load and unload then I thought it would be. We had a great weekend. The guided rides were a lot of fun and Diane even had time to visit a few Amish quilt shops. The last one we visited almost cost me a lot of money. The food and activities rounded out a great weekend. Don t forget to check your Chapter s newsletter and other chapters newsletters for things to do this summer. Enjoy the Chapter Life. Hope to see you soon in our travels Jim and Diane Heffelfinger PA Assistant District Directors Assistant District Directors: Am I reading the calendar correctly....it s July! We just got back from Pigeon Forge, TN. What a beautiful ride. We have discussed in previous newsletters that riding season was coming soon. Well folks it is here. And we hope you and your chapters are taking advantage of the great weather and you are out riding. In June, the district event was All

12 Chapters West hosted by Chapter N. We personally want to thank each and every one of you that attended. Because you were there and participated, All Chapters West was a great event. The weather cooperated and the weekend was beautiful. There were several guided rides and a scavenger hunt where you had to locate an Amish phone booth. There was good food, ice cream and lots and lots of FUN!!! Thanks again to all the chapters and individuals that participated. We are looking for a chapter to host All Chapters West in If you are interested in holding the event or would like to know more about hosting All Chapters West please contact us. Have you signed up to attend All Chapters East? It s not too late to get your reservation in. The dates for All Chapters East are September 16-18, 2016 in the Gettysburg area. Please get your reservations sent in, I am sure Chapter K is planning events for a great time! Speaking of Chapter K, do you realize that Rich and Wendy Wirt are Region B Couple of the Year and competing for International Couple of the Year in Billings, MT this year at Wing Ding? We hope many of you are planning on attending Wing Ding, August 31 September 3, Rich and Wendy would love to look out into the crowd and see their friends and family from Pennsylvania supporting them. As I mentioned in the beginning, Diane and I just got back from Pigeon Forge and we were fortunate to be one of the first to attend the seminar Lead Like You Ride. It is a great class and if you are given the opportunity to attend please do. You will learn about mindset, leadership skills and problem solving. The course is good for all aspects of our lives. Well, it is time to ride. Hope to see you on the road or at the next chapter event. Remember to always ride safe. Harold and Diane Jackson Your PA Assistant District Directors District Trainers: Hello Fellow Goldwingers Summer is here and it feels great, especially if you like heat, humidity, and rain! It s been a busy season so far with all the Chapters we ve visited. Last weekend we were at All Chapters West and what a great time we had visiting with so many of our GW friends. This was the first time Bonnie and I haven t had to go back to the Hotel every night just when things start getting good around the camp fire. We would like to Thank the wonderful folks at Chapter N for a great job hosting All Chapters West. Now we are really looking forward to another Camping weekend at All Chapters East in September. That means we have about 3 months of Chapter Events, District Rally s, and Wing Ding to fill the time. If you check out the Calendar of Events, there is hardly a week that goes by without one or more GWRRA related events! So Many FUN Activities, So Little Time With Wing Ding in Billings this year that means another Western trip for Bonnie and I. You know the old saying, Go West Young Man!!! I believe that saying also applies to Not So Young men too!!! This trip will be a little different for us. Unlike previous years we will not be riding the Bike to Billings. We ll be towing Her behind the RV. You know it just wouldn t be right to not treat Her with the TLC she deserves on Her first RIDE across the country. So I ve been working on Her Traveling Home to make it as cozy as possible for Her. This will be a totally new experience for Her and Us. It s always been just Her and Us, and She was doing all the work. I guess after all that work, well over 100,000 miles, She deserves a break. I ve had plenty of time to work on our travel plans to Wing Ding and of course, there will be several slight detours we ll be taking through some Old West Cowboy Towns. It shouldn t be more than 4 or 5000 miles of detours. Traveling with the RV and Trailer has also helped eliminate the problem I ve had for years. I m sure you remember because I ve written about it several times, it was how to pack all of Bonnie s Stuff and still have enough room for my things. With the extra storage space and a little practice, I was able to get most of my things in the trailer with the Bike and still get the door closed, so I guess we re good to go. Enough about our traveling plans, I m sure everyone has their own plans for the summer. Let s talk about some training activities within our District and Region. As we visit the different events this summer, don t forget to take advantage of the Training being offered at these events. The training not only counts toward Chapter of the Year points, it is also a great way to learn more about our organization, its members, and how to improve our riding skills. It also provides an opportunity to preview different training that would be beneficial if presented at any of our Chapter or District events in the future.
