Rich and I will keep everyone informed as we get any information. Notes: For Christmas this year, Chapter K decided to "Adopt A Family" from the Salvation Army. We were given a family that included a single mother with 4 children. The rules from Salvation Army for adopting a family were that we were required to provide the nonperishable food for the holiday meal as well as a gift card for the perishable items (meat, dessert, etc.). We also were to provide at least one toy, one outfit (top and pants), and a hat and pair of gloves for each of the children age 16 and under. Thanks to your generous donations we gave them the following: Mom - $60 gift card for Weis Market (where she does her grocery shopping) and a $50 gift card for Walmart. We also provided potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, stuffing, noodles, cranberry sauce and gravy. Son, Age 18 - Two $25 gift cards for Walmart, hat and gloves. 5 Hello Chapter K. FROM YOUR CHAPTER ASSISTANT DIRECTOR Even though this is the first newsletter for 2018, I feel we need to have a look in the rear-view mirror for a few minutes because a lot of neat things took place in December after the publication of that newsletter. Sunday, Dec 10 th was a cold, windy day. We had received a couple inches of snow which made it perfect for the chapter s Christmas Lights Walking Tour at Rocky Ridge Park, York, PA. The chapter s Adopt-A-Family for Christmas was a huge success. We would like to thank everyone for their gift donations, the food, and their time to wrap and deliver everything. Judy and I were once again unable to participate in the chapter s continuing efforts at the Salvation Army, to help make those less fortunate have a Merry Christmas. Thank you everyone who worked those two days of handing out and carrying out the gifts for those people. Now we come to 2018 and the chapter s annual New Year s Day Ride for pork and sauerkraut. With the forecast of bitter cold temperatures lingering in the air for days prior to the ride, I had made my mind up that someone had to do it. That was until we woke up to three inches of snow on Saturday. I do believe this is the first time in all of our years doing New Year s Day rides with PA K, today was the only time there were NO bikes -- it might well be because it was a low of 3* F and residue of salt on the roads. Despite the cold temperatures and the roadways, I also think we had a record attendance - 23 chapter members and 1 guest. Great showing Chapter K!!!!!!!!! We would like to wish everyone in PA Chapter K a very safe and Happy New Year. Gary & Judy ACD

FROM YOUR CHAPTER EDUCATOR Hello Chapter K, It is the start of another year and not all of us are rusty with our riding. Some of you have been riding all year. Since we have not had much snow so far, the roads are in decent shape. Not too much cinders or salt on them. I have said this before, but if you get slush on your bike please get it off as soon as possible. Salt will eat up your chrome and aluminum. Those of us who are not riding should at least start with short rides when we get back on the bike. Something to think about when you get tired of football and Hallmark on the TV. What is meant when we say have a safe trip, have a safe ride or for our Florida friends, have a safe winter. Safety is relative to what we are doing. Sitting in front of the TV is very low risk, riding a motorcycle down the highway has a lot of risk. Instead of saying have a safe ride, should we not say, try to not take unnecessary risks. Everything we do has a risk factor. We have all heard about someone falling in the bathtub. Kitty and I have a friend who slipped and fell at his mailbox, suffering head injuries. Another friend was cutting a damaged branch off a tree when another branch being held by the damaged one whipped around and knocked him off the ladder. He was laid up for months. I would think we all know someone who has been hurt because they did not do all they could to minimize any risk before they did something. I could tell you about a lot of things that I have been hurt doing because I did not step back and say what if before I started. 77 years of those things would make the newsletter too long. My wish for each and all of us this year is that we take care of the what ifs before we do anything. Take care, ride aware, Denny

FROM YOUR CHAPTER C.O.Y. Burr! Baby it s cold out there!! Hope everyone had a great Christmas and a good New Year. Not much going on this month. I had to wake a little earlier than usual on the 15 th and 21 st to meet up with other chapter members at 7:30 a.m. to go help at the Salvation Army distribution. We always have a fun time, just a bunch of us being together and talking to other people from other groups that help and finding out where they are from. This is the second year that I ve help with this and I m glad this is something we do. Yeah, the feet hurt by lunch time but I enjoy knowing that I m helping others. I believe there were 10 of us on the 15 th and 10 on the 21 st. On Monday, January 1, 2018, we went to Tractor Supply in Dillsburg to meet other chapter members to go for some Pork and Sauerkraut in Newberrytown at the Fire Hall. Some of us followed Rich and Wendy, and some showed up at the Fire Hall to eat with us. We had 25 people that came out on that cold day. No one on a bike a little too cold. John has been busy getting all the financial stuff done for the end of the year, making a trip or two to get Kitty s help. Thanks, Kitty!! Be safe out there this winter. I m sure there is more snow and ice on the way. Upcoming: January 21 st Bowling and Lunch January 28 th Gathering John & Wilda, Chapter K C.O.Y. HAPPY NEW YEAR, BABY!!

SALVATION ARMY DAYS, DECEMBER 15 th and 21 st Thanks to the folks who volunteered at the Salvation Army this year. Chapter K chose distribution this year, and we had two days that we selected to help, December 15 th and 21 st. Our shifts on both days were from 8 until noon and the time sure flew we were all kept very busy. This is a very rewarding experience and we always feel good about doing this. On the 15 th, Rich, Wendy, Larry, Grace, Wilda, Glenda, George, Brenda, Rick and Vicki participated. Rich took traffic duty, Larry and Rick took package delivery to vehicles, Grace, Glenda, and Brenda were busy distributing socks and hats, Wendy, George, and Wilda took box pickup (from the floor to the front of the room for delivery), and Vicki took food voucher distribution. Everyone was busy! ABC Channel 27 came in and interviewed Rick; he was on the 7 p.m. news per Sue Bennick. She watched and saw his interview. Sue also said Glenda made the news as well. Thank you, Sue, for letting us know. Most of us missed it. Below is a picture of Rick being interviewed by ABC Channel 27:

As you can see above, there are many, many boxes that are delivered. This is just one day s worth of deliveries. It s truly amazing what the Salvation Army does to help make the holidays brighter for those in need, so thank you again Chapter K members who helped. Whether you donated a toy, clothing, or gave money to the Chapter to help with our charity this year or in the past, we truly appreciate your support. We couldn t do it without your help. On the following pages are some pictures, compliments of Glenda, from our participation on both days.

Of course, after our shift was over on the 15th, we headed to the Summerdale Dairy Queen for some lunch and (I m shocked!) ice cream. And it started snowing while we were at the DQ. That s a real shocker too it seems to always snow when we go there. Then on the 21 st, Rich, Wendy, John, Glenda, Wilda, Rick, Vicki, George, Carol, and Brenda returned to complete our volunteer mission with the Salvation Army for the year. Rich again took traffic control, Rick and John took box delivery to vehicles, Wendy, Wilda, George and Carol pulled boxes from the floor for families once they were registered, Vicki and Brenda were asked to help with food vouchers, and Glenda finalized the registration papers after families were processed. Again, everyone was busy!

After our shift was over on the 21 st, we headed to the Squeaky Rail for lunch. Something was funny can t remember what it was though. I m sure Rich was behind it somehow.

MORE FUNNIES FROM GLENDA A man was telling his neighbor, I just bought a new hearing aid. It cost me four thousand dollars, but its state of the art. It s perfect. Really, answered the neighbor. What kind is it? Twelve thirty. Morris, an 83-year old man, went to the doctor to get a physical. A few days later, the doctor spoke to Morris and said, You re really doing great, aren t you? Morris replied, Just doing what you said Doc: Get a hot mamma and be cheerful. The doctor said, I didn t say that I said, you ve got a heart murmur, be careful. AND SOME PICTURES FROM GLENDA AT OUR ANNUAL PORK AND SAUERKRAUT DINNER ON JANUARY 1, 2018

GLENDA & VICKI S FUNNY CORNER The hereafter. Her minister told an eighty-year-old woman that, at her age, she should be giving some thought to what he called the hereafter. She said to him, I think about it many times a day. Oh, really? said the minister. That is very wise. It s not a matter of wisdom, she replied. It s when I open a drawer or a closet; I ask myself, what am I here after? A better seat. A man takes his place in the theater, but his seat is too far from the stage. He whispers to the usher, This is a mystery, and I have to watch a mystery close up. Get me a better seat, and I ll give you a handsome tip. The usher moves him into the second row, and the man hands the usher a quarter. The usher looks at the quarter, leans over and whispers, The wife did it. Trivia for the month. Can you guess which of the following are true and which are false? The answers will be in next month s newsletter. First person to me (must be to verify date/time) with the correct answers gets a prize at the January gathering. 1. Apples, not caffeine, are more efficient at waking you up in the morning. 2. 18 FROM YOUR PA DISTRICT EDUCATOR Hi everyone. Well, it s a new year and many changes went into effect on 1/1/18. I would like to share a tool that I use to see how each and every one is doing in the Rider Ed Levels Program -- the Rider Ed Database. So, you have no idea what training you have done or seminars you have attended for yourself. Below is an explanation of how you can check the database to see where you stand. 1. Start by logging into the GWRRA website, 2. Click the Programs tab, then drag over and click on the Rider Education tab. 3. Click on the button on the left side of the page, My R.E. Information. 4. Log in by entering your membership number in the Username box, and then the password in the box below. Your password is typically your house number and your two-digit month and year of your GWRRA expiration date. Note: If you have problems with logging in, you can click on the I need help logging in tab. It is simple to use. Follow the instructions shown. If you still have problems, please contact me at prosemi2017@gmail.com. I will help you. 5. If you are successful logging in, you will see a block called Member Family Listing. It should list your name (and any names associated with you family members that are also GWRRA members). 6. Click on view on the far-right side of the screen alongside your name. Now you are logged on and looking at your page. At the top of the screen, you will see general information about yourself. If you see something that is incorrect, simply contact the GWRRA home office and ask to have the problem corrected. You are the only one that can request information be changed; no one else is permitted. The next section is the chapter information. This shows the chapter you are affiliated with; you are permitted to have more than one chapter shown in this block. The section following chapter information is Rider History. It shows what level you are at and when you received it. It also shows if you are current in the Levels Program as well as the current mileage you have (both safe and high mileage which will be explained at a later date). The last section at the bottom of the page shows Training History. If you don t see much training history, mouse/cursor over the word history, and all the training you have taken in Rider Education should be displayed. You should also see your key training that was completed for the Levels Program as well as an indicator that will show if you are current in Level 2 or higher. Hopefully, this will get you started in checking your Rider Education history. Now that there is no longer a Chapter Educator position, I will be the individual to contact if there is a question about your history in the database. Please me at prosemi2017@gmail.com. I am here to help you. In the future, I will address the Levels Program and why/how it is important to you. Please remember to BE SEEN when riding. Doug Motter PA District Educator

FROM YOUR DISTRICT DIRECTORS Hello 2018! What a good day, welcome to a New Year, new changes from GWRRA, and a new District Team. I think you are getting the idea, there are changes in Changes are often good. As humans, we don t like change but once we get used to the change which we all do as time goes by, we realize that there was nothing to fear with the change. Diane and I live in the happy little town of Pleasantville, which is about 50 miles SE of Erie. Our home chapter is PA-N. Like most of you, we have held several offices and sometimes more than one office at a time. We joined GWRRA in 2011 on the recommendation of a friend. We became Chapter Educators in 2012 which we held through PA-N has asked us to continue giving educational talks during the gathering, which we are pleased to do. We were Chapter Directors for two years, In September of 2015, we became Assistant District Directors overseeing 7 Chapters. Now, we are honored to be your Pennsylvania District Directors, and with your assistance, we will do the best of our ability to do a good job for the District of Pennsylvania! Anytime you have a suggestion or a problem, please bring it to our attention. We listened to what was being said at various functions and took your advice; we have added riding classes to the 2018 PA District Rally in Uniontown, PA, May 17-19, 2018, where you can ride Route US 40, the road that built the nation. We have scheduled a Trike Riding Course (TRC) which is full. We have scheduled an Advanced Riding Course (ARC) for twowheel motorcycles which has a few spaces left. Due to the requirements GWRRA implemented for the office of Ride Coordinator, we added a Road Captains Course on Thursday, and that is full. Thank you for your participation! At the rally, we plan on having indoor classes in the morning. We would like you to take advantage of the area and ride a guided or unguided ride that has been planned for you in the afternoon. For those who want to stay behind, there are indoor surprises. Get your registrations in this month to attend the 2018 PA District Rally and your name will be entered to win $100. You must be present at the drawing to win. Thank you for selling the Pennsylvania District Raffle Tickets. We hope that your chapter has been working on the 2018 ride calendar. Even when you can t get the motorcycle out and ride, we would like you to plan events so you can get together with your GWRRA family. When riding season starts, reach out to other chapters to join you on a ride or for ice cream! It s a great way to make new friends and socialize. Don forget, your ride calendar needs to be posted on the District Website. This way, Doug Motter, PA District Educator, will be able to complete the forms that the chapters use to fill out. We plan on attending as many gatherings, events, and rides that we can. You never know, our next visit may be to your chapter! Remember to always ride safe.
