We think spring is finally on its way. We are ready to ride! Did your chapter participate in the Chapter of the Year program? Again, this year, there w ere more chapters that participated, than in This goes to show that there are more and more chapters in Region B having fun while participating in the programs that GWRRA has to offer. The Chapter of the Year program is the foundation on which GWRRA is built. Participation in the program leads to a stronger chapter. Congratulations to the chapters that were chosen as the District Chapter of the Year. Along with Bob and Julie A Hearn, w e w ill be making the announcement of the new Region Chapter of the Year very soon. Good luck to all of you that participated in the program. As far as we re concerned, all of you are winners just by participating in the program. The Region publishes a calendar with all major region activities t hat we know about. You can send your event to Clark Clemens at cwcleme@twcny.rr.com - he will add events to the region calendar. 2 plan on attending some of the great events throughout the region. There is something for everyone during the year;: cruises, camping trips, ice cream rides, mid-winter gettogethers, training days, all of the region-wide rallies, and of course - the big event - Wing Ding. Once again, if you think you have a free weekend someplace in Region B, it means that you have not looked at the websites and newsletters with the opportunities for FUN. Mark your calendar for a new region event. The Region Team is working on putting together a Summer FUN Day. On Sunday, July 9, 2017 at the Promised Land State Park in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, lies over 12,000 acres of state forest land with two lakes and several streams making this a fantastic location for a day of summer FUN. The park itself has 3,000 acres of land and many activities. There s definitely something for everyone. For those of who enjoyed the Region Camp Outs, you may want to use Pickerel Point Campground to make a weekend of the Summer FUN Day. The Region Team is planning a FUN day of games, food, a tricky ray auction, and we will be holding the Region Couple of the Year Selection at this event. Please come out and support the Region and have a great day with your GWRRA friends and family. The flyer for this event is posted on the Region Web Site: Want to read more about the state park? Check out their website: NOTE: You must be pre-registered for this event. No onsite registrations will be accepted. All of the District Directors have raffle tickets from the region. The raffle starts the first of May and runs for the whole month. There will be 31 winning numbers drawn during the month. One ticket can win $250 Eight tickets can win $100 Four tickets can win $75 18 tickets can win $50 We have had several districts send in sold stubs already. Please help the region by participating in the Region B Raffle, so that we have funds for operations, training, and rider education. As of this writing, we have 50% of the sold tickets returned. We need all of the tickets sold and returned by April 15! It sure is nice to not worry about the weather, to be done at 5 pm (not out until after midnight and getting up very early the next Page 2

3 morning) like last year; we are going to enjoy our new adventure in the Door Prize Booth. We get to meet a lot of people, give out some prizes, and have fun! In a week or two, we will be asking for our members help in manning the booth. There will be a schedule made up of 2 or 2 ½ hour shifts (depending on how much help we get). We will need to man the booth Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8 am until 5 pm, and on Saturday from 8 am until 11 am. If you have a particular time you would like to help, let us know! It is that time of the year when we are all anxious to be out riding again after the long winter. Be careful out there! 5 Region CPR/FA Trainers Keith and Elaine Price You ve Ignored The Warnings Okay, you've been getting chest pains. But they can't be heart related, can they? It must just be some indigestion or acid reflux, right? The primary symptom of a heart attack is pain! This pain is concentrated in the center of the chest but may often radiate to one or both arms and even to the neck. This is because nerve pathways can cause areas other than the chest to experience the pain originating from a heart attack. Indigestion, acid reflux, or a number of other things including heart disease may also cause this pain. If you are having recurring episodes of pain, it is vital that you go to your doctor and find the cause of it. If the pain is stomach related, your doctor can test for it. If it is heart related, they can test for that too. If the pain occurs after exertion and lasts less than five minutes while resting it may be what is termed "stable angina." This condition is normally treated with nitroglycerine tablets, which are placed under the tongue during episodes of chest pain and allowed to dissolve. Nitroglycerine expands the arteries allowing greater blood flow. If the pain lasts longer than five minutes while resting, seek medical attention immediately! This is called unstable angina and may indicate an impending heart attack. If the pain occurs at night, and is strong enough to wake you up, call 911 immediately! Do not drive to the hospital yourself. Do not have someone else drive you to the hospital. Call 911! This may very well mean that a heart attack is in progress and can result in ventricular fibrillation. V-fib is actually clinical death and if you are not revived in a few minutes, actual death will result. It is also vital to note that ventricular fibrillation, also termed cardiac arrest, can occur without any chest pain at all! When you arrive at the hospital, the first thing that is likely to happen is that the staff will administer an ECG or electrocardiogram. This test will show the electrical activity of the heart muscle. It will show any irregularity of the Page 5

6 heartbeat. It may indicate if you are having an attack or if you have had one. It will not show if you have any blockages in the coronary arteries. Only a nuclear stress test or an angiogram will show an arterial blockage. Usually they also take a blood sample and look for a specific protein that is released into the blood by the heart when it is damaged by an attack. The presence of this protein is positive proof that an attack has occurred. Later a stress test may be prescribed. This like an ECG except that you walk on a tread mill while the ECG is conducted. The treadmill increases in speed and incline until a target heart rate is achieved. The target rate varies principally with your age. The stress test shows how your heart reacts to exertion but again will not indicate the presence of arterial blockages. Another type of stress test is a nuclear stress test. During this test, a radioactive dye is injected into an artery in your arm. An x-ray is taken of your heart while at rest. Then the regular stress test is conducted immediately followed by another x-ray. The two x-rays are compared and indicate the presence of arterial blockages but not their location. The exact locations of arterial blockages is graphically pinpointed by the use of an angiogram. In this test, a catheter is surgically inserted into either the femoral artery in the groin or the radial artery in the wrist. The catheter is guided into the coronary arteries and a radioactive dye in injected through the catheter while an x-ray video is displayed on a television screen in the operating room. The exact location and severity of any blockages is displayed on the TV screen. If severe blockages are found a decision, will be made as to what surgical procedure will be performed. The principle choices are "stents" or the more radical "coronary bypass surgery." With stent placement, a catheter is guided to the site of the arterial blockage with a tiny balloon at the end of the catheter. The balloon is forced into the blockage and inflated. The blockage is thus pushed aside, opening the artery. Then the catheter is again guided to the site of the blockage, but now the inflated balloon expands a tiny medicated wire cage. The stent, which remains in the artery forever, permanently opens the artery at the site of the blockage. Anti-platelet medications must be taken for at least a year after stent placement. Page 6

7 Coronary bypass surgery is a much more invasive procedure and is employed if the blockages are too numerous or too massive to be treated with stent placement. With a bypass, the chest is opened up and arteries or veins, which have been taken from the patients arms or legs, are grafted from the aorta to a point on the blocked artery below the blockage. Recovery from a stent procedure is normally a few days, depending on heart damage. Recovery from bypass surgery normally takes weeks. Usually a program of cardiac rehab is prescribed after a heart attack. Lasting four to six months, rehab is a program of exercise while your heart is monitored. Increasing in difficulty over time, rehab is designed to strengthen the heart muscle and, hopefully, prolong your life. But exercise does not stop when the rehab program ends. For it to work, you need to regularly exercise at least three times a week. Heart disease and heart attacks are not a death sentence. However, they are life-changing events! Definite, permanent changes in lifestyle must be followed. Medications must be taken according to your physician s instructions. Your health will be closely monitored for the rest of your life. If you follow all of the rules that have been given by your physician, your life should last for a long time. What we teach saves lives! Stay healthy, stay safe. 9 Leadership Training Eileen & Tim Guile On March 4 th, we had the pleasure of traveling over to Rutland, Vermont Chapter A s meeting with eight members from NY-N. We presented Brian Thomas, the newly appointed Vermont District Director, with his Leadership patch and also gave him the District Trainer patches. Thank you Brian for stepping up I do believe you are the first person in Vermont to be the District Trainer. Congratulations! On March 17 th, Tim and I went over to Manchester, New Hampshire to put on an Officer Certification Program (OCP). We were supposed to have 21 students but only 10 showed up. The night before the presentation, I got terribly sick (don t know if it was a touch of the flu or something I ate), but the show must go on. The people were there so we managed L to R: Russell Powers (NH-T); Thomas & Kathryn Fallon (NH-T); Cassandra Powers (NH-T); Dee Thomas (VT District); Tim & Eileen Guile (Region B Trainers); Timothy Rathbun & Lisa Rost (VT-A); Carol George (NH-T); Chris Ferris (NH-T) and Christine Davidson (NH-T). through it (wastebasket in the hall which was used several times). 11 Membership Enhancement Program / ARL List Coordinators Dan and Mary Costello A Most Unusual Non-Riding Season So Far Spring 2017! Spring is finally here according to the calendar and the TV news. However, the expected low tonight is near 20 and tomorrow s high is 35! Normal for this time of year is 55. Even with the cold, we are going to start preparing the Wing for the riding season. You will likely be doing the same thing so here are a couple things to remember. The T-CLOCS checklist is very important any time, but even more so at the beginning of the riding season. The Wings have been stored for quite a while, so go over everything slowly and carefully. Look for leaks and drips, check lighting, fuses, and switches. Hit everything a couple times; make sure everything does what it s supposed to do. It is better to find a problem here in the garage than out on the road. Be aware that some furry friends may have taken up residence in the Wing over the winter months, depending on how and where the bike is stored. Check out your gear also; you haven t used it in a while and it may not all be in the same place. Because conditions can change quickly early in the season, keep heavyweight (as well as lightweight) gloves in the bike. The same is true for your jacket. The best part about the start of the riding season, or any ride for that matter, is that it presents the opportunity to meet and recruit new GWRRA members. You will likely encounter other riders who may be interested in what you ride and where your destination is. This presents the perfect opportunity to strike up a conversation that includes the benefits and fun of GWRRA membership. A useful recruitment tool is a membership packet that can contain anything you want to include. The packet should contain material to help a fellow rider in the decision to join GWRRA...such as: An application to GWRRA and don't forget to add your membership number. Copies of your Chapter Newsletters and think about District and Regional newsletters also as this will show the Page 11

12 large coverage of GWRRA. Carry pictures of past rides, typically on your phone, to be able to show participation on previous rides and places to visit. Copies of your ride list for this year. Maybe also last year s ride list. This shows the long term commitment of you and your chapter to members riding and having fun. Copies of Wing World to show the National and International aspect of GWRRA as well as a yearly longdistance destination that changes yearly to a new region of the US and allows for an impressive list of places to visit on the way out AND the way back. Copies of the Gold Book to show the family of members willing to help you if your run into trouble when out travelling - just because you are a fellow member of GWRRA. This translates to a major "AH-HA" moment when talking to anyone that has had trouble in a far off place and had no one to call or ask for help. This is a major asset for GWRRA members. Information about GWRRA Roadside Assistance and Rescue Plus. The very real possibility of a major breakdown on the road requiring a tow truck being called gives all of us pause. The GWRRA plan, since it is sponsored by a motorcycle group, will get motorcycle-experienced and knowledgeable response to limit your worrying about getting to a safe place. Very important to all of us. Printout a list of the other perks and discounts GWRRA has available. Check the GWRRA website and see what is there. Hotel discounts, Rental car discounts, and more. This is easily packed into a few letter-sized envelopes and carried in your Goldwing trunk. Ask your Chapter MEC and some of your chapter members what else to add and also if they want to carry a couple packets. Having the packets available and showing pride in the appearance of the Goldwing and our riding gear presents a compelling picture to fellow riders you meet when out riding. It may also make them more interested in joining GWRRA. Recruiting allows us to enlarge our GWRRA family, and is important since new members are the lifeblood of your chapter. Just remember to get out there and have fun. Fun is why we joined but more importantly, fun is why we stay. Stay safe, have fun, and remember your T-CLOCS.
