On December 19th, Patti & I visited chapter H2 for breakfast and we took some canned goods in return for Waldo. They let Patti draw the 50/50 ticket and they warned her not to pull mine but she pulled mine out anyway That was fun! So Waldo is once again back at Chapter W. We also made it to a couple of dinner rides including a cold winter night at the Toledo Zoo. The month went by pretty fast with all the friends & family around for the Christmas Holidays. We hope you all had a great Christmas and as we start a new year, we will do our best to serve you, the members of Chapter W. Proud of Chapter W As we have started to serve the members of Chapter W we have appreciated all the support we have gotten from you the members. We are proud of the things that Chapter W does, aside from GWRRA s Friends for Fun, Safety & Knowledge. Community things like the food donations to The Daily Bread, cash donations to Lenawee Therapeutic Riding, making Christmas Wreaths for Linwood Manor Nursing Home. Not to mention the thing we all have in common. our love for riding! We want to again thank you the members for all of your hard work at the Toy Run that allowed Chapter W to make the donation of $1, to Lenawee Therapeutic Riding. We called Howard Pennington and told him we had a check for him, so he and Randy Bolz who is the current President of Lenawee Therapeutic Riding stopped by and said we would be welcome to come out and observe the handicapped riders along with the volunteers when their ACD Patti Kintner with Waldo & Chapter H2 Director Millie Yancy. 3 Craig & Tanya White RIDER ED GIMME 5 How and Why a Helmet Works ( Taken from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Website) Different helmets do different things. There are hard hats on construction and heavy-industry heads; football helmets on athletes heads, and Kevlar caps on military heads. None are interchangeable. Motorcycle riding helmets are very sophisticated and specialized for the activity. They ve been developed carefully and scientifically over the years. Four basic components work together to provide protection in the motorcycle helmet: an outer shell; an impact-absorbing liner; the comfort padding; and a good retention system. What we see first is the outer shell, usually made from some family of fiber-reinforce composites or thermoplastics like polycarbonate. This is tough stuff, yet it s designed and intended to compress when it hits anything hard. That action disperses energy from the impact to lessen the force before it reaches your head, but it doesn t act alone to protect you. Inside the shell is the equally important impact-absorbing liner, usually made of expanded polystyrene (commonly thought of as Styrofoam). This dense layer cushions and absorbs the shock as the helmet stops and your head wants to keep on moving. Both the shell and the liner compress if hit hard, spreading the forces of impact throughout the helmet material. The more impact-energy deflected or absorbed, the less there is of it to reach your head and do damage. Some helmet shells delaminate on impact. Others may crack and break if forced to take a severe hit; this is one way a helmet acts to absorb shock. It is doing its intended job. Impact damage from a crash to the non-resilient liner may be invisible to the eye; it may look great, but it probably has little protective value left and should be replaced. The comfort padding is the soft foam-and-cloth layer that sits next to your head. It helps keep you comfortable and the helmet fitting snugly. In some helmets, this padding can even be taken out for cleaning. The retention system, or chin strap, is very important. It is the one piece that keeps the helmet on your head in a crash. A strap is connected to each side of the shell. Every time you put the helmet on, fasten the strap securely. It only takes a couple of seconds. To ride without your helmet secured would be as questionable as driving without your seatbelt fastened. Craig & Tanya White Chapter W Educators Page 3

4 Tanya White Welcome to the New Year. With all the excitement of Christmas and New Year you may have forgotten to check your membership cards to make sure you were current. I know most of you know when your membership is up so I don't worry to much. I am very excited about the Chapter of the Year program done through Rider Ed. With that in mind I have most of the paper work done. There is a part based on the Rider Ed Levels program and I need to know if I have everyone at the level they are or if we need to do some paperwork to get you into the next level. LEVEL I Requirement: Verbal commitment to ride safely at all times. LEVEL II Requirement: Rider - a Certified Rider Course with 5,000 safe miles. Co-Rider - certified Co-rider Seminar or 2-up Rider Course Level III Requirement: Current in Level ll and have taken either First Aid or CPR training Level IV Master Tour Rider/Co-Rider. Requirement: Current in Level lll for one year and have taken both First Aid and CPR training. Have 25,000 Safe Miles and must be committed to riding with "Proper Riding Gear" at all times.
