It s time to ride! Finally we are starting to see a change in the weather! May is here and that means it is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in Michigan. Patti & I just got back from Lansing, where they held a press conference on the steps of the Capitol. The new Secretary of State, Ruth Johnson rode in on a Harley to kick off Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, she reaffirmed that the best way motorcyclists can stay safe on the road is to get trained and licensed, wear the proper gear and for all motorist to Share the Road. We were joined by Chubb Griewahn, & Pooh Larry Reiner. It was a little cool riding up and back, but we didn t get wet. Although there were a few drops here and there. I saw a shot of Patti on Ch 10. April started with Chapter R s Mystery Dinner. That was a first for Patti & I. The dinner is a mystery, cause you don t know what your going to get, and when. Loads of fun, Patti actually got her hotdog & bun on the same plate. I was not that lucky. My first course consisted of Potato Salad, Corn & Chips. Try eating corn & potato salad with a potato chip sometime I found out that it can be done. (A fork was on the scrambled menu list but I didn t get mine until about the 3rd course.) If you missed it, you missed a lot of FUN. Most all of you were at our Chapter W Breakfast, Patti had fun in the maple leaf costume, and all of you did a great job to make everything happen. Jan Smith was there with a Raggedy Ann Doll to benefit Rider Education. Also Jan gave us two more dolls for our Relay For Life team. To be sold at Relay for Life. Continued on page 3... Page 1

3 Continued from Page 1... Patti, Craig & I attended the Spring Officer Meeting on April 16th. Just before lunch we had Cowboys (V2-CD Kim Bargeron & ADD Farmer Rodgers) staged a shoot-out, fighting over saloon girl. Patti Kintner. (AKA MITZI). They were starting to ramp up the excitement of the District Rally in West Branch. Don t Miss It! After lunch we broke out in separate rooms to talk about specific subjects. I (Ken) was with the Chapter Directors group and we got involved in a discussion about - so called members of GWRRA who have not renewed their memberships. And it s not fair for the people who ARE current members to be paying for their (Friends for FUN Safety and Knowledge), who are participating but not current members. So if your membership has expired, please take the time to renew it. Just go to gwrra.org, or if you don t have internet, ask our Membership Enhancement Coordinator, Tanya White for a membership form. The other thing that I got from the breakout session was, the primary function of GWRRA is not fund raising, or education, or training. Even though we do a lot of that. Primarily we are an association of Motorcycle Riders! So let s keep our memberships current, then ride & have FUN doing it. As for the Men s Tennessee Ride, I understand they went thru some pretty bad weather. I m sure they had a great time riding the hills, once they got down there. We are glad that everyone made the trip down & back safely. While they were in Tennessee, some of us participated in the Advanced Rider Course in Tecumseh. For me, it was a fun day and I know I am now a little better at the slow speed tight turns. It s always great to get the coaching that the instructors provide, and Randy Wescott & Bruce Thayer did a great job. We had some Members from Chapter J, Chapter C, and one gentleman from Indiana, along with Dick & Karen Papworth, Kent & Annette Naugle, Ed & Vicki Philo, Wayne Escott and Patti & I. It was a FUN learning experience. Larry Wittkopf also participated in the Trike course on Sunday. Continued page 4... Page 3

4 Now we have finally made it to the month of May when we start meeting at 6pm every Wednesday night in front of Hobby Lobby for dinner rides. Remember when riding with a group, make sure you bike is ready, gassed up, and in good mechanical condition. Ride your own ride, tell the leader if you have any preference of lane position, or special needs. Road Captains are trained to take care of you and to do what is safest for the entire group. Other than dinner rides, we have Chapter L s picnic in the park, in Lansing on May 15th. Take a dish to pass and Chapter L will furnish Hot Dogs, Buns, & Drinks. There will be a 50/50 drawing to defray the costs. May 21st there will be a dinner ride leaving HL at 4pm. May 22nd is the Chapter R2 Chili $5.00 per person. And May 30th we will be dressing up the bikes in Red White & Blue to ride in the Tecumseh Memorial Day Parade. Almost forgot that Craig White and myself did a motorist awareness seminar for the Adrian Area Salaried GM Retiree Club on April 13th. If any of you know of a group who might like to listen to us - we would like to make people aware of motorcycles and May is the best month to do this. Patti has some BIG plans for FUN at the Chapter W campout in August so look at the flyer and get your campsites reserved NOW! We just got ours and there are many sites available at this time! We have just been granted permission to sell Bike Tickets at Cabella s on May 21st & 22nd. There are also rides scheduled on both of those dates. So whether or not you are going on the rides - Please contact Kent & Annette Naugle to schedule YOUR time to help sell tickets!
