We re looking forward to the Region D Rally that is quickly approaching and our annual camp out and fish fry. We took our annual ride to Zukey Lake on a nearly perfect September day. It started out a little cool but ended up wonderful. Kent and Annette lead us on a great ride with wonderful scenery, beautiful blue skies and sunshine. Can t think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Every time we go on a ride like that, it makes us enjoy GWRRA and our Chapter even more. Belonging to this organization really has changed our lives. The affect GWRRA has had on us was even more apparent a couple of weeks ago. The last week of August, I (Vicki) took a trip to Maine, (on 4 wheels). Going 1,850 miles you see all sorts of things on the highways. The one thing that really struck me, was the difference in motorcycle riders across the different states, and how thankful I am to be a part of GWRRA. We saw all different kinds, Harleys, crotch rockets and of course Goldwings. Some of the riders rode without helmets, some in shorts and sandals and of course the girls on the back in tank tops and shorts. At one point, we were stopped on the highway for an accident up ahead and I guess the 2 guys on motorcycles didn t think they had to wait because they went flying down the white lines, between the cars and passed everyone that was stopped. Another time I saw 5 crotch rockets going at least miles an hour, weaving in and out of traffic. On the back of one of them was a girl in a tank top hanging on for dear life. Every Goldwing I saw, the driver and passenger were in full riding gear. I realize that every state has different laws, and what you choose to ride in is a personal choice. I can t imagine getting on a bike without being properly prepared and making safety the top priority no matter what the laws say. I thought it was quite interesting that the state motto of New Hampshire is Live free or die. You don t have to wear a helmet or seat belts if you are over the age of 18. I m certainly glad we live in a country where we have the choice to make our own decisions but being a member of GWRRA, I ve learned we can have fun and be safe at the same time. The education that is provided to us and every member across this country equips us to make an educated decision every time we get on our bikes. We re glad to ride along side people that believe the same thing we do and we re very glad to be part of this organization. Stay safe, Ed & Vicki Page 1

The Toy Run is now here and will be gone tomorrow August was busy and for us it started the day before the gathering when we attended a road captain seminar. It was very informative and what I learned most was to keep clear communication going leader and the tail-gunner at all times. That way the entire group can have a fun and safe ride. Due to circumstances you can become the leader or tailgunner when the group gets split up at a traffic light. This has happened to many or all of us. Therefore it would benefit everyone to take the road captain seminar. There was a group of 13 who were led by Ron McKimmy. It was a great ride and after the ride Michigan Directors Bill & Vicky Young installed our new Southeast Section ADDs Ron & Valerie Jones. Chapter W helped raise money for the American Cancer Society on August 13th & 14th and we camped out at the Lenawee Relay For Life. We had a great time even though it was very HOT and Fred kept us a little cooler with fans that were running on his generator. Continued... Page 2

3 Relay for life is a team event to help in the fight against cancer. Each team is supposed to have someone walking the track for the entire 24 hours. Patti & Randa set up the luminaries in the shape of a heart. At 9:00 pm they turn off all the generators and as the candles are lit - they read off the names of the people who are being remembered and honored for their battle with cancer. They also call the names of cancer survivors to honor them. On August 15th Craig & Tanya White (I can say that cause their married now it s true cause I read it on facebook!) led us to Monroe where Chapter C had their Fun Run. We decided to go to Pete s Garage instead of the ride. Pooh Bear decided to have ICE CREAM! Page 3

4 Craig & Tanya White We all do it. Most of the time it is unconsciously. It is the WAVE. I was asked once why we wave to other motorcyclist? I responded, it is a way to say hello and we share the same interest in motorcycles. I read an article recently and it said that there is another reason to wave. It gives other drivers on the road another reason to notice us. Have you noticed what kind of mood a simple wave can put you in? The more you wave, the more you smile. The more you smile, the better the ride. It almost seems too simple, but it is true. Even though you may not get a wave back every time, the simple fact that you waved puts you into a seemingly better frame of mind. When you wave to small children riding in the back seat of a car. What do most of the do? Smile and wave back. Most tell the people in the front seat what you did. Smiles come to their faces also. The power of a simple wave. It just might be the brightest moment in ones day. We never know where people are in their busy lives and a wave and smile might be what they need to stop and see just what is really important. Coming back from up north recently, I noticed how many other riders did not return by wave. I stopped waving for a while and it is true that my frame of mind was not as good as when I waved to other motorcycle riders. When we are out on our motorcycles, remember to wave at all the other motorcycles riders and let them know in some small way that those of us who just happen to ride Goldwings are a friendly bunch and to we want them to have the best ride possible. We are out to make Friends, while riding Safely and gaining Knowledge every time we ride. Craig & Tanya White Tanya White Welcome to fall riding. I am really excited about riding in weather that is a little more comfortable to ride in instead of so hot. I have ridden in July's heat and August just seemed hotter. I did make it across the bridge on the bike. I even looked. Way to cool, although it was very hot! I have reached my 5000 mile mark for the summer and am now a level 2 and am very excited about it. Now for just a reminder about those membership reminders. Mike Osborn and Clarence Griewahn need to check theirs and make sure they are up to date. 6 On August 29th & Larry Liedel made their way to Ann Arbor and the Washtenaw Community College which was the start/finish of the 2010 Ride for Kids. The Ride For Kids is to benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. It was a great ride up and back. The ride itself was police escorted, non-stop, and close to a 60 mile ride. WCC has very large parking lots around the building and they had us weave thru the lots till everyone was rolling. Then we hit the road as one large group! Police blocked all intersections and we had one large group of bikes. We made our way up thru Whitmore Lake and a nice ride back along the north side of the Huron River to the start where they had a Subway sandwich waiting for us. They also had a program with some of the Kids who have been and are going thru their battles with brain tumors. Thanks to Chapter W2 and facebook for the pictures! The program was emceed by a Honda Riders Club of America representative. Chapter W2 and Chapter C were recognized for their fund raising efforts, as they were in the top five for group contributions. Some of the Kids got to ride along on the lead bikes, during the program they told about their rides. All together over $60,000 was raised. It s a very worthy cause and I will be doing it again next year and I hope some of you will join me. Page 6
