Hats off to the District Staff, what a fantastic job they did. Everything was under the The Big Top except the larger vendors, they were outside. The weather cooperated, cool mornings, warmer afternoons made for great riding. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Continued.

Congratulations goes to F2 (Garner) Chapter Couple, George & Brenda Harper who are our new District Couple. Corky and Allyson Lee have done a great job representing North Carolina. We wish them luck in November when they participate in the Region N selection. Hopefully everyone has called Holiday Sands North confirming their reservations in November Beach Weekend. 3 The Wing Nut Page 3 Bill and Janice have attended 9 Chapter Gatherings/Events, including Chapter A and 6 which were out of the Central Region this month, along with one out of the State. September found us at High Point, Smithfield, Greensboro, Mooresville, Wilkesboro, Forest City, Garner, Eden, and South Boston, VA. Great food and lots of fellowship with our fellow GWRRA friends. We expect to round it out to 10, as we visit Thomasville Chapter on Tuesday, September 27 th. We have completed visiting all the NC Chapters, and have begun our 2 nd round of visitation to the Chapters outside the Central Region; of course we usually try to visit all the Central Region Chapters every month. We hope you will come join us when you can. Bill and Janice have captured the Couple s Plaque 2 out of 4 chances for the month of September. Right now, Central Region capture standings for 2016 are Greensboro, 14, High Point, 12, Burlington, 9, Salisbury 6 and Winston Salem, 2. Continued

We attended Wings Over The Smokies and had a great time meeting other Couples from not only across NC, but from many other States, as well as Regional. 5 The Wing Nut Page 5 Chapter Educator Article September 2016 It s FALL! As in the season, not the action. And, oh, by the way, we do know how to best avoid having our motorcycles FALL, and picking them up if they do, without developing a hernia? If you d like a refresher course in picking up a Gold Wing, You Tube videos can be very helpful. A video from the NC GWRRA Drill Team has a young (attractive blond) lady pick up an 1800 cc Gold Wing - which was on its right side. Step 1, put down the side stand, Step 2, be sure it is in gear so it won t roll! The second video has an 1800 Gold Wing down on its right side, with no access to the side stand, and apparently the motorcycle is not in gear much more difficult, but still doable -- The best option, of course, is to avoid having the bike fall in the first place. Good balance, good control, and very focused attention on our riding will help here. Head and eyes up, look where you want to go! Should you become distracted, and lose concentration on your riding, particularly when stopping, or when maneuvering at low speeds, such as in a parking lot, Murphy s Law kicks in with its many corollaries. Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong, with the largest possible audience. Hopefully, we don t get hurt, except for our pride. If it s any comfort, it has happened to many of us (and we survived the embarrassment). Avoid pain, avoid embarrassment, stay focused, stay upright! We have another WOS under our belts, and next year will be in a new location in Waynesville still in the mountains, with wonderful roads to ride. I do hope we ll have guided tours again those were always fun, with new roads and new friends to ride with. WOS is a great opportunity to see old friends, and meet many new friends. We have had people from all over the USA, and from many other countries (we are an international organization) and North Carolina has always provided true hospitality to our visitors. Continued.

6 Page 6 The Wing Nut We re facing Fall weather now, with cooler temperatures and leaves changing color and falling to the ground and the pavement. We ve talked about grass clippings on pavement being a potential problem, but there is a law that should reduce grass clippings being blown out on the road. Mother Nature has no restrictions, and if leaves on pavement are wet, they can be extremely slick and hazardous. This puts the responsibility on us as riders to read the road and slow down to avoid traction problems caused by wet pavement, wet leaves, and coming too soon, black ice and even snow can be waiting for us. We have some great riding opportunities this month and next Virginia s Rally in the Valley, the Pancake Breakfast at Meadows of Dan (for those of us who love pancakes with sausage gravy), leaf-peeping in beautiful North Carolina and Virginia, and then the Region N Rally. If you re not in the GWRRA Rider Ed Levels Program, consider taking that first step and signing up for Level I, Safety by Commitment, that s a great start. Moving on up in the Levels program gives us educational opportunities to enhance our safety, knowledge and skills all good to help us become better riders and enjoy our motorcycles with our loved ones and friends! 8 Page 8 The Wing Nut Crock Pot Taco Soup Ingredients (16 ounce) can pinto beans 1 (16 ounce) can white beans or 1 (16 ounce) can kidney beans 1 (11 ounce) canniblet corn 1 (11 ounce) can Rotel tomatoes & chilies 1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes 1 (4 ounce) can diced green chilies 1 (1 1/4 ounce) envelope taco seasoning mix 1 (1 ounce) envelope Hidden Valley Original Ranch Dressing and Seasoning Mix 1 lb shredded chicken, ground beef or 1 lb any meat Directions 1. Cook meat and drain. 2. Shred if needed. 3. Add all ingredients to crock pot. 4. DO NOT DRAIN CANS. 5. Stir. 6. Cook on high for 2 hours or low for 4 hours. 7. Keep on low until serving to keep hot. 8. Garnish with sour cream, shredded cheese, chopped green onions, or tortilla chips.
