2 MONTHLY NEWSLETTER May 2017 Chapter Director s Two Cents Verna & Vernon Dudley Hello Gold Wing Family, Do you see my teeth? Well you should even if you live in Florida. Happy, ecstatic, on cloud nine and pleased are just a few of the words that describe how we feel about our NC-F2 Family. Davis Bowen, Kathy Keegan, David Knight, Clarence Berry, Charlotte (guest), Terry & Henrietta Wade, Shawn & Donna Lane, Walt & Bernadette Snider, James (Roaddog) Holmes, Lloyd Walker, Dean & Faye Holton, Brenda & Robert Gehring, and Vernon and myself went to NC-X in Wake Forest and captured the Eastern Traveler Plaque. Still grinning and it s two days later. IT JUST DOESN T GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT. We filled our tummies, laughed and had a great time. Thank You F2 for being the best chapter in NC. We will always do everything we can to make you feel like what you are - #1. You are the greatest. We need you to carve out a special place in your hearts for some of our family members. We know some of you remember Glenn and Ann Lee. She came to some meetings with a broken leg. Well, we found out today that she has been under the weather for about a year. She wants to be with us but due to her illness it s just not possible right now. Glenn is doing fine and he is doing what he needs to be doing and that s taking care of Ann. She brought tears to our eyes when she shared with us that she will be so happy when she can hold her babies. We hope to see them soon. Another one of our members Ernest Council is recovering from a serious back operation. He sounds great and the doctors shared with him that he should be moving around real good by May. We shared with him that they could come in their car or on their bike. We accept Ernest and Iris any way we can get them. We also talked with Gerry McKenney and she told us that Sam is doing great and his cancer is in remission. That was great news to our ears. They can t make it in April but asked us to remind them in May and they would come to the meeting. Ike Huggins is a little under the weather with vertigo. He and Diana are such a beautiful couple and we want to see them again soon. Ike has been giving to GWRRA for a long time. He helped start NC-E in Cary and then came to NC-F2 to spread more love and caring. That s what we are all about and Ike is a great example of the meaning of family. We ve put out a WANTED ALIVE AND ALIVE bulletin for Dwayne & Linda Miller, Bobby Wheeler, Ann Raynor, Paul, Carol, Katarina, & Grant Reuter, Ernest Perry, Wade Jensen, Mitchell Russell, Shelton & Shirley Barefoot, William Watson (he knows Dean), Larry Stewart, William Hollingsworth, Lee Boyette, Donnie Pearce, Ronnie & Becky Strickland, Tim Hill (works with Dean), and Gene & Barbara King (downsizing & doing great). We are up to our old tricks and told several members we would give them some candy and a gift if they came to our April 20th meeting. That s simply called bribing LOL. We know James Forte personally and if he says he s going to do something you can take it to the bank. He shared with us that he is going to sign up his lovely lady Judith and bring her with him. He s got the GWRRA SPIRIT. We were looking at our member list and we have several members with member numbers that were issued quite some time ago. Ike and Diana s number is , Dean and Faye s number is , Mike s number is and he is our million mile man and David s number is These are our Quarter Century Men and Ladies. We have longevity in our chapter and they should be proud of it because we are proud of them. Barb, our Newsletter Editor, shows us what serving means. The first page of the newsletter recognizes our great association from the top to the chapter level. The level of detail is phenomenal and shows everyone that we are ONE BIG FAMILY. She shared with us that she loves doing the newsletter and it really shows. We know it takes time to do something with this level of detail and we just want you to know Barb that we have plenty of hugs and kisses for you. We can t thank you enough for the service you provide freely to our NC-F2 Family. Until next month..we would like to say THANK YOU to everyone for all of your hard work and dedication to the greatest motorcycle organization in the world. 3 MONTHLY NEWSLETTER MAY 2017 Rider Education David Knight & Kathy Keegan Age Does Matter! At a recent GWRRA course, before allowing the members to use the course, the instructors had everyone attending check their motorcycles, trailers and helmets for safety. One of the things they checked for was that the helmets should not be over 7 years old. It was quite a surprise to a member when he found out that the new helmet he had purchased only a month before on sale was actually over 7 years old and no longer suitable for use. All DOT approved helmets must include a date of manufacture on them. It might be a label on the chin strap or you might have to carefully peel back the cloth liner of the helmet and look for a label or a date stamp on the Styrofoam. The industry recommendation is that a helmet should be replaced after a maximum of 5 years of use or after 7 years from the date of manufacture whichever occurs first. Even an old helmet that appears to be brand new may have deterioration, due to many factors, that can affect its ability to properly protect you in the event of an accident. Before you head out for your next ride, please take a minute to check the manufacture date on your helmet. Is it within the recommended date ranges? The next time you are out shopping for a new helmet, especially at shows and sales, check the manufacture date before you buy it. On a similar note, tires are another critical part of our motorcycle for which age does matter. Even a new tire purchased at a dealership can be several years old rather than a fresh new one and that age can affect its safe performance and life. Check the date of the tire before you buy it to make sure you are getting a fresh one! Enjoy the Ride and Be Safe! 4 MONTHLY NEWSLETTER MAY 2017 CHIMICHANGAS (Weight Watchers) ½ lb. ground turkey breast ½ tsp. ground cumin 1 onion, finely chopped 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce 1 clove garlic, minced 2 tbsp. mild green chili pepper, chopped 2 tsp. chili powder 1/3 cup reduced fat cheddar cheese, shredded 1 tsp. dried oregano 4 (8 inch each) fat free flour tortillas Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Spray a nonstick baking sheet with nonstick spray; set aside. Spray a medium nonstick skillet with nonstick spray; set over medium-high heat. Add the turkey, onion, garlic, chili powder, oregano, and cumin. Cook, breaking up the turkey with a wooden spoon until browned, about 6 minutes. Stir in the tomato sauce and the chilies; bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, until the flavors are blended and the mixture thickens slightly, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in cheddar cheese. Meanwhile, wrap the tortillas in foil and place in the oven to warm for 10 minutes. Spoon about ½ cup of the filling into the center of each tortilla. Food in the sides, then roll to enclose the filling. Place the chimichangas, seam-side down, on the baking sheet. Lightly spray the tops of the tortillas with nonstick spray. Bake until golden and crisp, about 20 minutes. Do NOT turn. Mexican Salad 1 can kidney beans (drained) 1 can black olives (sliced or chopped) Use as much or as little as you choose. 1 small red onion (sliced very thin or chopped) 2 med. Tomatoes (seeded & diced) I use three plum tomatoes. 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese submitted by Barb Lobach Layer ingredients in bowl. When ready to serve, mix above ingredients and add Fritos and dressing. 1 bag Fritos (crushed) Small bottle Catalina Dressing (use your discretion as to how wet you want your salad) 4

6 MONTHLY NEWSLETTER MAY 2017 District News Roy & Cindy Bryant NC District Directors Can you believe it is already April? Where has it gone? The days are moving so fast and before you know it, Wings Over The Smokies will be here. All chapters should have your raffle tickets by now and I hope your sells are going good. I have talked to several that have tickets and they say is much easier to sell the tickets this year than in the past. That sounds great and we have plenty to sell, so if your chapter gives out...contact your perspective ADD. Thanks to everyone that are selling. We have had the pleasure to go and join in at chapter gatherings and it really looks great to see so many members out and about visiting. Chapter event fundraisers are being supported also. We encourage everyone to support your neighbor chapters. Remember, chapter gatherings outside of North Carolina need Goldwing tickets, so visit them too. Tennessee District Rally will be held this month and as in the past, North Carolina will be well represented. Come and join us to see what Tennessee has to offer, be a part of their fun. Every rally is different and they each have their own type of fun. We just returned from Florida and Louisiana District Rallies. We had a lot of fun in a little different way than at WOTS. It was good to see other North Carolina members at these events and needless to say, each rally knew, NORTH CAROLINA IS IN THE HOUSE. Now for something I hate to do. Chapter NC-R, Thomasville has gone inactive. I must give Steve Cline a very big THANK YOU for everything he has done to hold the chapter together. I really enjoy my position as District Director except when I see a Chapter in this status. A chapter that was so strong at one time, now has to close the doors. It makes me ask, what can be done to change this and how do we keep this from happening to another chapter. I think back to when I first joined GWRRA in 1997 and there were over 45 chapters. What happened??? As we get older, we don t seem to be as active as we used to be. Well, I still have some fire left in me and I am trying to look at each event as if it were my first. I get involved just like I did back then. You will find the FUN in the event if you get involved. Share the FUN. Wings Over the Smokies 2017 MEMBERS ARE NUMBER ONE!!!! The MEPC Corner By the 1st of this month, the Districts participating in the 2016 Chapter of the Year Program have already forwarded the hard copy of the winning District Chapter of the Year for 2016 packet to the Region N Membership Enhancement Program Coordinator (Denise & Ervin Blake). The packages are being reviewed, and the District Chapter selected to be the 2016 Region N Chapter of the Year will be announced soon. The next step is to forward the 2016 Region N Chapter of the Year winner to National before April 1, Congratulations to all the Districts who submitted Chapter of the Year packets. Everyone was a winner. The Chapter of the Year packets really show how much FUN the GWRA Chapters are having by attending chapter, district, region and national events, visiting other chapters, doing charity ride, having dinner and ice cream rides, and some things that was new to us! Great job Region N GWRRA Chapters! It is our hope that many more chapters will participate in the Chapter of the Year program. Many of the chapters already do everything required already. Turn in a monthly calendar to your Membership Enhancement Coordinators, and start keeping a list of the members that attend ANYTHING the chapter does. Have someone keep those attendance sheets, and store them by event type or chronological order. At the end of the year you have all the documentation you need to fill out the score sheet and become a silver (or even gold) level chapter and possibly the Chapter of the Year. Let s show everyone how great Region N is. I know we have the best chapters...it s time everyone else know it. Get out and show your pride! This year is already filled with many opportunities for Fun together. If you haven t already registered for the District Rally s in Region N, now is the time to start planning! Tennessee District Rally in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee in April; Virginia District Rally (RITV) in Roanoke, Virginia in July; West Virginia District Rally, Elkins, West Virginia also in July; Kentucky District Rally, Cave City, Kentucky in August, North Carolina District Rally, Haywood County Fairground, North Carolina in September; and to close out the rally season, Region N Rally, Johnson City, Tennessee in November. All of these Rally registrations are available on line on the Districts and Region websites. Don t wait for the last minute, plan ahead, reserve your lodging, they all have great venues. Wing Ding this year is in Grapevine, Texas at a spectacular resort. Mixed in all year are many chapter rallies that always deliver great FUN for us as we gather together. And last, don t forget to visit local chapter gatherings. This is where you really get to know our fellow member...and pick up more great ideas for having FUN. Probably not words you thought you d hear from the President! In this case, they mean exactly what you think they mean -- we are looking for help. With the 40 to Phoenix ride that arrived at Home Office on April 5th, we did a call out for photographers to capture the ride. It was a fun celebration! As a Member and then volunteer Leader I remember saying, If they would just ask me, or the Membership, what to do. Now I am asking all of you to answer that call and help us become an even better Association. What are we looking for? We need Members who understand social media and use it and know how to manage groups, post announcements and help us develop an even better presence. Are you that person? We are looking for help with ideas for advertisements and advertisers. Do you have ideas to share? What about reaching out to vendors who sell your favorite product and explain why they need to advertise in Wing World. Do you have experience as an ad salesperson and you re willing to work or help us out? us your name, Member # and what you d like to do to help to Iwillhelp@gwrra.org. Photographer -- do you have those skills? We have specifications and if you take photos using them, we can use your skills! We need photographer skills at Wing Ding or other GWRRA events. Let us know! We always welcome volunteers for tasks at Wing Ding. If you are attending, go to our website, or and click on the volunteer tab and follow the prompts. We ll be in touch, so be sure your address is correct. Have you put together marketing campaigns? We need help putting together campaigns for Membership, Rescue Plus, our Benefits, and more. If you have some experience and are willing to share some of your time, we d love to hear from you. What about writing an article for Wing World? Share your experiences with us and we ll see what the correct place is to highlight your article and pictures, too.
