3 Page 3 Greetings fellow riders, with another months passing we are getting closer and closer to riding season. As the temps moderate a little we hope you are preparing yourself for the season. Be sure to get yourself ready to go as well as your favorite ride. This month has flown by, as have most of them recently. We attended a really nice chili cook off hosted by Chapter N. There were several chapters represented and there more food there than the law should allow. After numerous samples I settled on some of the very best chicken noodle soup this old mouth had ever had the pleasure of enjoying. Thanks to Chapter N, John and Charlotte Nairmore and their entire team for a great evening (just as a note, we are actively perusing the recipe for that soup). We have just wrapped and active weekend where both OCP and Medic/First Aid classes were taught. The OCP class was held in Bessemer, Al at the UAB Medical West hospital. Roy and Anita Fosnight anchored this class and were kind enough to let Linda and I help. We had 5 chapters represented with a total of 31 members attending. Outstanding day! At the same time Robert and Gail Brown were conducting a Medic/First Aid class for Chapter J in Tuscaloosa, Al. Have not had the chance to talk to them but am sure the info will be in this newsletter. Chapter Y is set to kick off the funday/rally season with their annual funday on Saturday March 5th at the Gardendale Civic Center. Info is on the District website. Chapter M is having their30th Anniversary celebration on Saturday March 12th at 12 Noon (EST) at Buffet City in Phenix City, Al. Info for that event is also on the district website. Next up is the annual gathering of the wings for the Florida Rally at the International Palms Hotel in Orlando, Fl. March 17, 18 and 19. Always a fun event we hope you get to make your first long ride of the year to warmer weather. For those not going to Florida, March 19 is also Chapter Z and F s annual funday to be held in Marbury, Al. If you are not going to Florida we hope everyone in Alabama will make plans to attend this event. We have gone the past couple of years and have had a wonderful time at each. Good eats, good friends and a good time. Info is on the district website. In closing for this month, please remember all of our men and women in uniform and their families as well as all of our first responders and their families. When you see these fine people out please take the time to say thank you to them for taking care of us each and every day and allowing us to enjoy the freedoms we have in this country. 4 Page 4 SAADD GREETINGS to all! It just amazes me how quickly time is flying by. Here we are in March and I haven t even gotten over Christmas yet! WOW what a life! Just having too much fun I suppose but I like it. The OCP Class in Bessemer AL on February 20 th was a huge success. This class was offered for all GW officers and others that have not taken it before and I believe 31 souls showed up to get educated. Officers are expected to take this as training to help keep the chapters focused and functioning as great fun, family units. It was a great class with some great instructors and it was full of very useful information that will not only help you with your experiences in GWRRA, but will help you in everyday life too. Great job! We have fun days scheduled on March 5 th for AL Chapter Y in Gardendale AL. Chapter M has their 30th Anniversary get-together scheduled for March 12th in Phenix City AL at the Buffet City Restaurant. A great time is planned for this special event. Who would have thought they would have lasted 30 years??? They have done a great job and many more years are ahead of them for more fun and fellowship with their GW family. The AL Chapter Z & F Cookout is scheduled for March 19 th. The Florida District Rally is also scheduled for March 17, 18 and 19 in Orlando FL. WOW!!!! There are plenty of opportunities for fun this year already and more are on the way! The 40 to Phoenix Ride is scheduled to begin April 6 th in Wilmington NC. We have 3 riders from Chapter A that are going to join the group in Leeds AL on the 8 th for the ride to Phoenix AZ. Ed Harris, Sandy Parker and I will join them and we are looking forward to another great experience with them. Chapter U has their 25 th Anniversary celebration scheduled for April 12 th at The Golden Coral in Dothan AL and CD Bruce Williamson promises a great time for all and would love for many to show up to share in the fun. Congrats on keeping it all together Bruce and I know everyone is still having a lot of fun! Chapter G FUNDAY is Saturday April 30 th at Lowery Community Center / HWY 52 between Samson and Kinston, AL Registration begins 10:00 a.m. / Registration Fee $12.00 Includes Delicious Bar B Q Plate Lunch. Join them for a great time too!!! Remember that GWRRA is a wonderful association and we want all good folks to be part of our great family. Share your calendars and your experiences and feel free to call me or Kathy anytime if we can assist in some way with you. Use those beautiful Gold Wing motorcycles and others to enrich your life and strengthen your GW family ties and relationships and make more memories of a lifetime! You deserve it! 5 Page 5 Well at least some of us have faith that Spring is on the way. Robert and Gail Brown have been busily teaching Medic First Aid classes, and Jan and I have classes scheduled for Chapters H, S, and B. This is a big step in preparing for the riding season. Thanks to Robert and Gail, and thanks to all who participate. I now return to my old topic: Riding classes, we have folks who would be glad to teach, but we need YOU, the members to help us identify suitable facilities. We have a line on a possibility in Chapter S s area, thanks Mike Horton & Mark Swindle for helping to identify the location and arrange for us to check it out. I would like to urge other chapters around the state to help us to identify candidates. We can t serve the membership without your assistance. I will be traveling to Madison, Georgia on March 5th to teach a Trike Rider s Course (TRC) for the Georgia District. I am willing to travel as possible to check candidate ranges to find places where we can serve the membership. Please assist in nominating candidate ranges and talking to the folks that control access to them. If you find sites that are suitable, flat, free of obstacles, with a well maintained surface, and able to be blocked off from other traffic, nominate it to me and I am more than willing to come check it out. The size requirement is 206 ft. X 310 ft. for the Advanced Rider's Course (ARC); 206 ft. X 310 ft. for a Trike Rider's Course (TRC), and the range MUST be approved by the District Educator for insurance and accreditation purposes. We also have to get permission from the property owner and provide them with assurance that we will do no damage to their facility. I am available to track down leads, but I need you to help identify possible candidate locations and a Point of Contact for me to talk to about the facility. Thanks for all you do. 6 Page 6 Level II: Safety by Education I wish to continue my discussions of the Levels Program. Last month my article here discussed: Level I: Safety by Commitment - The first big step to success Level II of the Rider Education Program (REP) is also referred to as Tour Rider. It represents the commitment of the Rider and/or Co-Rider to be safer motorcycle riders by taking approved motorcycle riding courses at regular intervals. GWRRA has chosen several educational training programs for the Riders and Co-Riders such as the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) programs, the United Sidecar Association course, the CSC (Canadian Safety Council) programs, and the GWRRA's Advanced Riding courses and Parking Lot Practice programs. (See note in the Rider Education Manual on PLP.) Completing these courses provides the foundation and skills for your quest to be a safe motorcycle rider. All recognized programs with the exception of the PLP are taught by qualified and Nationally certified instructors. PLPs use our Facilitators to administer the program. For the Co-Rider, we have provided an excellent seminar and "Two Up" programs to assist in their role in the safety aspect of motorcycle riding. Motorcycle education goes "hand in hand" with commitment. The "on bike" education by MSF, USCA, CSC and GWRRA for the Rider and Co-Rider and the "off bike" education designed specifically for the Co-Rider, provide a very effective approach to motorcycle safety. This is when a REP participant truly begins to understand what the Level I commitment means and sees the value in the program. Requirement: Rider - a Certified Rider Course with 5,000 safe miles. Co-Rider - certified Co-rider Seminar or 2-up Rider Course. No cost to sign up. Patches available at $5.00 per participant Receive: "Red Triangle" patch for either Rider or Co-rider signifying Level II participant. I have looked into several different avenues for us to get Level II qualified. There is the official State of Alabama course sponsored by the University of Montevallo, however the price for taking this course is $ The State of Georgia also has a course.

7 Page 7 However this course also has a $ price tag. The military bases usually have a motorcycle safety course for their military members, but this would not be open to the public. GWRRA offers a free course for its members, however here in Alabama we are currently looking for a facility in which to conduct the training. We are looking for an area 206 ft. by 310 ft. with no obstacles. Many parking lots have those concrete wheel stops that separate the lanes that make them unusable What we would need is a paved lot of that size that does not have any obstacles whatsoever. So far that has been difficult to find as the dimensions are actually larger than a football field. I am asking the help of the chapter to help us find an area like this in order to train.
