3 Chapter Director Richard Mummey 3 drwrcr688@msn.com New Chapter Director Last month, I was installed as Chapter Director of Chapter W and Max Stefoin as Assistant Chapter Director. We thank Gary Smith, NM-Assistant District Director for a job well done installing us. Thank you Tom Brewer for your service as Chapter Director the last three years. I have been in GWRRA since 2004, but a paid member from I have owned a few bikes: 2004 Honda 1100, 2005 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic, 2011 Harley Davidson Ultra Limited and now a 2016 Harley Davidson Road Glide Ultra. I have kept my levels up-to-date with completion of an CPR/1st Aid and ARC course last year in accordance with maintaining my Master Tour membership (9767). Staff positions: Roadrunner mileage, chapter newsletter, webmaster, assistant chapter director, district newsletter editor. Riding: A former CD use to say Ride Hard or Go Home. Now, I don t know if we ll ride hard, but we will ride be riding this year. As you will read in a few pages, we rescued our mascots from Chapter D in Farmington. Keith Rhodes from Chapter D took great care with them, had a photo op at Wolf Creek pass, and at a warm fireside chat with the other mascots from Chapters D,F,N and W. We have a ride after our gathering this Sunday, March 18th, heading down to Socorro, NM via secondary roads, to Socorro Springs Brewery. 5 District Education Notes 5 Chris Boyle chris224068@yahoo.com Group Riding We ve all heard the old saying safety in numbers, whether it's walking at night or hiking in the mountains. But what about riding in a group? It s certainly a fun activity, but the fun for many can be diminished if some basic group riding guidelines are not followed. Have you ever been in a Mass Ride where each rider is doing their own thing and paying little attention to the other riders in the group? We see it all the time and maybe these groups prefer this style of group riding. Clearly, some general rules are desirable to ensure a safe and predictable ride. The following is a brief review of the GWRRA techniques and guidelines for group/team riding: Arrive prepared: Arrive on time with a full tank of gas. Hold a Riders Meeting: Discuss things like the route, rest and fuel stops, hand signals, and CB use. Assign a Lead and Drag (tail) rider. Both should be experienced riders who are well versed in group riding procedures and have completed the GWRRA Road Captain course. The Leader and Drag should be aware of each rider's skill level before the ride and monitor the riders during the ride. Plan the ride: All participants should be aware of where they are going and how they are going to get there. Schedule stops for gas, restroom breaks and sightseeing. Keep the group to a manageable size: The typical group size is 5-7 motorcycles with 5 being optimal. It may be desirable to break large groups into more manageable teams. Ride prepared: Carry first aid kits, cell phones, and appropriate riding gear to address weather conditions that may be encountered. 6 District Education Notes continued 6 Ride in formation: The staggered riding formation (see diagram below) allows a proper space cushion between motorcycles so that each rider has enough time and space to maneuver and to react to hazards. A single-file formation with a minimum 2- second following distance is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of poor visibility or poor road surfaces, entering/leaving highways, or other situations where an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is needed. Mechanical and medical issues: If a rider has a problem and drops out of formation, the Drag will communicate this to the Lead and stop to assist. The Lead will then find a safe location to stop the rest of the group. Obstacles: Any member who observes a pothole or other road hazard should use the appropriate hand signal to alert following riders. Since my newsletter editor won t let me get overly wordy on this subject, I ll again state that this was a brief review of group riding guidelines. There are many more topics covered in the GWRRA Team Riding seminar and members are encouraged to attend one at their earliest convenience. Who knows, you may learn some new tips and gain a better understanding of group riding techniques. Upcoming Seminars/Training If any member is interested in becoming a Rider Course Instructor, there are two Rider Course Instructor Certification Programs scheduled in the spring They are as follows: Rider Course Instructor Certification Program (RCICP) will be held in the current Region E. Classroom Instructor Development Module (CIDM) - April 7, Wintergreen Resort, Lake Delton, WI. Rider Course Instructor Training (RCIT) - May 16-19, 2018, Des Moines Area Community College, Ankeny, IA. Rider Course Instructor Certification Program (RCICP) Washington District will host an RCICP for the GWRRA Advanced Rider Course (ARC). The RCICP is scheduled for Wednesday, May 16th through Sunday, May 20th, The RCICP will be held in Kennewick, Washington. Location: Kennewick Fire Training Center 1811 Ely St., Kennewick, WA Members wishing to become GWRRA Rider Course Instructors must submit Rider Education Form N.13A to their District Educator as soon as possible. 8 Chapter Mascot-C.F.S. and friends 8 Mission Accomplished!! Chapter D had collected all of the Albuq./Rio Rancho chapter mascots, so Chapter W went for a visit and retrieved C.F.S. and friends back from Chapter D. Chris Boyle, Christy and I along with Gary and Janet Longhurst and their grandson Michael set out on Sat., March 10th at 6:am. It was still dark when we left Home Depot in Rio Rancho and saw the sun rising when we passed San Ysidro. Cuba was a cold 30 degrees, but the heated gear performed well. We arrived in time for breakfast and Chapter D s gathering. GWRRA Chapter W Mark Rowe presided as Gary Greenfield was out-oftown. Due to some changes in the mascot stealing, we were able to collect Chapter D s mascot. After the gathering, Mark Rowe and Keith Rhodes from Chapter D rode with us to Cuba, NM and were treated to ice cream. We then went back to our respective cities.
