3 3 Happy Holidays!!! Hope you have all your Christmas gifts wrapped, the tree up and lights hung outside. It has been rather chilly but I did ride this pass week for the first time in a month and it was 57 degrees, a lovely day. Last month at our gathering, Chris Boyle presented Jim and Carol Johnson their Level 1 patches as they start their journey in the Levels Program. This is a excellent program GWRRA has as you are required to periodically renew your CPR/1st Aid and ARC/TRC courses to maintain your Level certificate. Congratulations Jim and Carol! We had Jonathan Pendley pick the white marble and collect $63.00 in the marble game last month. Just in time for Christmas, congrats Jonathan! We will start a new game in January. December 1, Chapters N, F, W had a Christmas party at the Ramada Inn. Santa was over whelmed at the 100+ teddy bears we brought for him to present to children in local hospitals. It was a good time meeting members from other chapters form around the state. I did not know we had some well dressed members, a few could make GQ! Chris Boyle is stepping down as District Educator. Chris has done an excellent job for the District and we are glad he is part of Chapter W! I would like to thank the staff and members for their assistance throughout this pass year. It has been a pleasure working with you all and as Bartle s and Jaymes said, thank you for your support! I closing, I wish all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! 4 District Education Notes 4 Chris Boyle chris224068@yahoo.com Final Thoughts As you may have heard, I will be stepping down as your District Educator effective January 1, This is after 3 and one quarter years and it seems like I started yesterday, well not quite, but you get the idea. Time fly s as the saying goes and it sure isn t slowing down. It has been a real pleasure, as well as an honor, serving as your District Educator. I hope that over the years you learned a little from me because I have certainly learned a lot from you. In my final newsletter article, I would like to summarize some of what we have reviewed over the years and what I consider important strategies and skills that we should keep in mind so our ride is a safe one. You didn t think I was just going to say goodbye and leave it at that did you! So, consider the following: Semi-Trucks Pass quickly and be aware of the large truck blind spots No Zones. When passing, remember there is a No Zone in front of the truck, so don t pull back in too quickly. If you can t see the truck mirrors or the driver in the mirror, you are in a blind spot. Unsecured Loads Do not closely follow vehicles hauling or carrying loads. This is especially true of pickup trucks moving household goods or other materials that are not professionally secured. If you are forced to follow for a time, give yourself enough space for emergency braking or to swerve if parts of a load end up on the roadway. Cornering Remember your cornering arc outside/inside/ outside. Look up and through the corner. Don t fixate on the lane lines. In single vehicle accidents, a high percentage of accidents are caused by rider error, typically a slide -out (low side) and fall due to over braking or running wide on a curve due to excess speed or under -cornering. Slow Speed Maneuvering When coming to a stop, you should be looking straight ahead - keep your head up. This will help prevent the wobbles. When initiating a tight maneuver like a U turn, turn your head and look where you want the motorcycle to go, not where it is pointed. Many of us may look over the front fender which will make the turn more difficult and wider. Use the clutch friction zone effectively. Blind Spots Anything that obstructs your clear view can be a blind spot. For example, bushes, light poles, blind hills, parked and moving vehicles. Always be on the lookout for obstructions that create blind spots for you and other drivers. This takes a conscious effort and should be practiced. Position yourself in the lane so you are visible to oncoming traffic, as well as traffic in your lane. Be ESPECIALLY cautious when approaching traffic making left turns. This scenario is the single most dangerous accident exposure we have. Chapter web address: Page 4 of 14

5 District Education Notes continued 5 Maintenance While in Alaska, my fishing buddies would kid me when I would say about my boat, a clean boat is a happy boat. Well, as corny as that may sound, the same goes for our motorcycles and this phrase was intended to include all levels of maintenance. Review your Owner s Manual to see if your ride needs some attention and note that some maintenance intervals include both mileage and time, whichever comes first. Training Continue to participate in available training to maintain and/or increase your knowledge and skills. Practice what you already know. Be alert to side traffic, left turners, and other traffic that may be behaving erratically. Don t ignore your traffic sense. Be alert and ride defensively. Remember Search, Evaluate, and Execute strategies. I encourage you to give some thought to the above points and keep them in mind each time you ride. Best wishes to everyone and I hope all have a healthy and prosperous New Year. Expect the Unexpected Be prepared by covering your brakes when necessary. Practice swerve maneuvers occasionally. Class size is limited to 24 WHAT: Training on First Aid, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, and review of the Automated External Defibrillator WHEN: Saturday, January 19, :00 a.m. 12:30 p.m. (or upon class completion) WHERE: Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Room Academy Rd. NE (2 blocks east of Wyoming and Academy intersection) Albuquerque, NM. Park in the south lot. WHY: COST: Program brings to the class new updated methods and provides hands-on practice with classmates and training manikins to develop knowledge, skill and confidence. $25.00 per person PAY IN ADVANCE please.
