Most of us know Doug and Chris Pettigrew, former District Directors as well as current Medic First Aid Instructors. Chris has been going through some medical problems recently, but the good news is that she is expected to be released tomorrow. Our best to Chris, and please keep her in your thoughts and prayers and hope for a quick recovery. This seems weird not doing monthly newsletters, not that I m complaining, because writing those monthly articles were always tough on me. I always felt like the rest of the team always did a GREAT job, however, which made me feel even more like a slacker. So, since we last spoke Lisa and I have done some travelling, including the Danube for the Christmas Markets, which was pretty cool, actually damned cold!!! Our river cruise started in Budapest, which is an amazing city, due to the architecture. We were so impressed that we plan to go back to the Danube in October 2019 at the beginning of October. Our trip will start in Munich Germany (THINK OCTOBERFEST in Munich!!!) We love vacationing with friends, so if you like to join us, please reach out to Lisa or I. In February we joined 38 friends, mostly from GWRRA supporting TX-A1 Fundraising Cruise to the Panama Canal. Thanks to everyone from New Mexico, Arizona, Home Office, California, Florida, and Colorado for their support. TX-A1 will receive a check from Dream Vacations for $2000. So, congratulations to TX-A1 for a very successful fund raiser. Way to Go!!! Before we joined the cruise, Lisa and I visited with many friends from our former Chapter, NJ-F (F-Troop) who have moved to Florida from NJ and now live in The Villages, which is a huge retirement community near Orlando. It was sure great visiting with our friends. We got our GWRRA start with F-Troop and had so much fun in the chapter, and during our recent visit. But wait, there s more, as we speak, we are on our way to yet another cruise, (ENOUGH ALREADY WITH THE CRUISES!!) to the Mexican Riviera. Okay, on to more GWRRA Stuff. We got feedback last year that the rally that it was too expensive for a lot of folks. Yes, it was a wonderful venue, but yes, it gets pricey for a few nights there. Since our current guidance is more fun and riding, we think that this year, well, we just won t have a rally. Let s do some ride-ins, picnics, and more fun events at different locations around the district. The team is scouting some locations, and we ll announce plans once we have more info. We really need strong representation at the Hoot in the Ute, at Zermatt Resort in Midway Utah. Profits from event will be split to the participating districts based on participation. So, the more folks we have at the Hoot the more money we can put into the District Treasury to support our members. For more info visit or refer to the flyer in this newsletter. We also have a District Fund Raiser cruise to Hawaii over Valentine s Day in What is cooler than Hawaii, and what a great time with your friends and honey in Hawaii, for Valentine s Day? Please refer to the flyer in the newsletter or give Lisa or I a call for more info. We have plenty of cabins reserved so please come join us for this fun time. Congratulations to Richard Mummey, as he is the new Chapter Director for Chapter W. Richard has been a member of the chapter for a very long time, and has been a great contributor in many aspects of the leadership. Thanks also to Max Stefoin for helping Richard and serving the chapter as Assistant Chapter Director. Also our thanks to Tom Brewer for his dedication to Chapter W over the years, and did a great job as Chapter Director, and will remain an active chapter member. Our mascot stealing rules needed some simplification. Chris Boyle took on the job of editing the rules and knocking it down to one simple page. We asked the CD s for feedback, but seemed like they were acceptable, so the condensed version is on the website via this link Thanks to Chris for an excellent job, on this and so many other tasks. I guess the natural punishment for only doing quarterly newsletters is more words. 6

Ijust returned home this afternoon from our latest Chapter R gathering, this time in Hobbs, NM. We had 19 there and even a birthday cake provided by the McCarty s. We had 7-8 bikes (mostly trikes) which included Skip Barrows' old/new trike (old bike new conversion) which looked really nice and Dale Jones'- new to him - beautiful blue BMW RT1200 (he trades for more bikes than I get mail). Oh well, it's not what you own, it's what you experience. Several of our members are dealing with health matters which preclude them from riding, but they still show up in cagers and I applaud them for the effort. It was a great day to ride although the traffic along US 380 east of Roswell was really heavy today. I understand spring break is upon us and the folks from Texas were rolling into New Mexico. In fact, the UFO museum I passed on the way back home looked packed! Now, you have heard the song that touts God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy? Well, God is, and some people really are crazy. Like the driver who, being behind the semi on the two-lane south of Tatum just up and decides to pass the truck even with four bikes with lights in the on-coming lane. React! Next couple of miles, an oncoming pickup with a trailer pulls off to his right (away from us) and the lady in the suburban behind him makes an adjustment to go around him by, again, coming into our lane. Really? She even waved at us as she passed. So, we talked about the importance of training at our gathering. CPR, for example, is not a matter of the date or expiration on your card. It's literally a matter of "can you do it if called upon?" You act, react, like you train. If you train only once every two years, well, you are not as likely to react as well as someone who trains annually. But, convince yourself, if someone like you came along with a shortcourse a couple years ago or someone who was confident in their training because they did it way more often, who would you choose? Same goes for riding skills. Take the training, practice more often and when the time comes, you will react just like you were trained! Of course, if your equipment (bike) is not maintained, you may get a bad surprise when you attempt to react rapidly, so make sure all systems, tires, brakes, fluids, etc. are ready and thus able to withstand rapid changes. Finally, when would spring time be spring time in New Mexico without some fresh tar and gravel on our highways? Piles were stacked up along the roads I took today. So, make sure you have checked the road conditions on your route with others or via the NM DOT website (other states have the same), and never plan on having to be somewhere without a little extra time built in. It was a great day to ride, cloudy and cool at first, warming to about 73F with light breezes. I'm looking forward to some other rides, chapter visits, 40-Phoenix help on April 16th, and Zermatt, UT. Hope to see you all there! Ride and be safe. 7

We pray that you all are well. We want to start this article with an announcement wait for it we have a new grandson!! Corbin Conrad has entered the world!! Weighing in at 10 lbs. 3 oz., he is absolutely THE most handsome little man on earth!! He is the 3 rd grandchild by one of my twins, Juliette. I was able to spend 9 days with my daughter and her beautiful family in Texas. While there, we went to the famous Magnolia Silos in Waco If you have the chance to go take it! It was fabulous! We now want to send a huge Thank You to Tom Brewer and Grace Aragon for all their hard work in running Chapter W for several years. They have now stepped down to relax and enjoy the chapter from another angle. Last Saturday, I (Gary), swore in Richard Mummy as the new Chapter W Director, and Max Stefon as the new Assistant Chapter Director. We welcome them and hope they get a lot of support from everyone in the area. We have some very exciting rides coming up that we want to invite everyone from all Chapters to come and share with us. April 13 th -15 th - We begin our ride to see our northern Chapter D family and bring home Wiley. We will tour the many Indian Cultural sites located in Northwest New Mexico. In short, we will ride to Bloomfield, meet the Chapter D riders and have lunch. From there we will ride to the Salmon and Aztec Ruins. We will then check into our hotel, have a wonderful dinner at a pub, and get some sleep. The 14 th, we will go to Chapter D s monthly meeting, then ride to Shiprock, 4 corners, and possibly Mesa Verde if it is open. Later that evening we will meet at Pizza 9 for dinner and possibly have some District training with Chris Boyle. We may be holding 50/50 or 50/25/25 drawings on one or both nights. On the 15 th, we will return to Albuquerque, stopping in Cuba to have lunch at El Bruno s. (Itinerary will be sent out with more information). April 16 th - We immediately turn around the next day and we host the event in Moriarty for the 40 to Phoenix riders coming across the US from back east. Last year we had about 90 riders, and this year they have 133 riders scheduled (so far). That number is not including those of us hosting and those coming in from NM, CO and other areas. This will be a District event with many prizes to be given away along with our 50/25/25. We are asking that each NM Chapter donate 2 nice door prizes. It is extremely important to mention that the 40 to Phoenix group loves coming to New Mexico for our welcome and event! They really appreciate all that we do for them. We are one of the few states that they want to have a GWRRA event with. The following day, Gary will be joining the ride to Phoenix with John Gaherty, Cotton and a few others. Anyone wanting to join us, please come along! Be sure to make your hotel reservations in advance. May 12 th - Chapter D is having their big motorist awareness event in Farmington. This has been a big, successful and meaningful event each year! So, plan to attend it as well. Keep an eye out for Ch. D s Information. We will be having a ride leaving Albuquerque early that morning so that we can attend this wonderful event. May 25 th -27 th - Don t forget that the Hoot in the Ute ~ Zermatt Resort Rally in Midway, UT. There is a planned ride to this event 23 rd - 29 th. (Itinerary will be sent out with more information). It is extremely important that New Mexico has a good attendance of members at this event, as money from the Region will be given out based upon attendance to this event. Numbers are likely to be taken from the Rally Registration ; so, you must register for the rally not just the hotel. NM District truly needs everyone to try and attend. Rally Promo video: As you can see, we have a lot of fun things to do; so, we hope to see everyone at some or all of these events. Please get your bikes serviced and ready to roll. Don t forget the driveshaft and all connecting joints 8

Traveling on a motorcycle can be an enjoyable adventure. Despite where you are riding, you may encounter conditions that may modify your ride. However, depending on preparation, planning and training, riding on altering road conditions may be lead to a safe ride. Your travels plans may take you through early morning dew, through mountains and the summer sun. Being prepared with knowledge of the weather, your health and your bike, you can make your travels safer. I have identified six weather related events that a motorcyclist may encounter while traveling. 1. Black Ice 2. Cold 3. Fog 4. Heat 5. Rain Storms (lightning) 6. Sand Storm Black ice is a thin sheet of ice on the surface of a road. The ice is not actually black but only the black surface of the road is visible. Black ice does not have visual warning signs. Black ice forms when the pavement's temperature drops below freezing and the air temperature stays above freezing. As the temperature rises, the snow on the road may melt. As the temperature cools, the moisture on the road freezes - forming a thin layer of frozen water on the roadway. This typically occurs after a snowstorm. Black ice can form in warm climate regions. Especially on mountain roads. Water running off the mountain, may form a thin layer of ice. The road surface remains cold causing the thin layer of ice; black ice. This typically occurs after a cold night. Riding a motorcycle under these circumstances is dangerous. When these conditions occur, do not enter the roadway. If you are on the road during these occurrences, exit the roadway immediately and stop in a safe location. Resume your ride after the temperature increases. Cold Weather Cold weather riding can be hazardous if you are not aware of the effects of cold. If your bike is well maintained it should operate effectively in cold weather. The most difficult concept in cold weather riding is what seems cold to one person is normal to another. However, in cold weather riding, no matter your comfort level, the dangers of cold weather riding affects the skin the same. Hypothermia occurs when the body loses its ability generate heat. On a motorcycle, this can occur during cold temperatures and in damp/wet conditions. Your clothing may get damp or wet, or after extended periods of riding in such conditions, hypothermia may occur. Generally, it is rationalized that temperatures just above freezing are ideal conditions for hypothermia. However, on a motorcycle at temperatures of sixty degrees and moving at speeds and as the cool air flowing over damp clothes your body temperature lowers. Gradual reduction of body temperature could be subtle. As the biker s body cools down, response selections may become impaired. In cold weather, wear clothing that allows you to keep your body temperature at normal range. If you become cold, stop at a location to warm yourself. Fog: For a motorcyclist, riding in and/or through fog is dangerous. Weather forecasters have identified several types of fog conditions. The most common condition a motorcyclist many encounter is Radiation Fog commonly called Ground fog. During foggy conditions, high beam headlights are ineffective. Switch to low beam. Make sure your clothing is highly visible. The rider will experience a reduction in vision and depending on the air and surface temperature, may encounter black Ice. Riding in fog can be lethal. If you encounter fog, exit the roadway immediately. Heat: The most overlooked challenge for the motorcyclist is riding in hot weather. Motorcycle riding is most popular when the weather warms. The roads are dry and the sun is high in the sky. What better time to ride a motorcycle! Despite the illusions of the warmth, riding in hot weather presents significant challenges. The question is whether to wear protective clothing or short pants and a tee shirt. After all, being comfortable, having fun and staying cool is important. However, the science of riding in the heat is more challenging than riding on cold weather. 10

In warm weather the concern of staying cool, hydrated, wearing proper clothing and protecting yourself from sunburn and are the multiple facets that are required for a safe ride. As our weather warms, we must remember why we are GWRRA members; Fun, Safety and Knowledge. To have all what our motto stands for we must be mindful of the importance of hydration. Mike and Ruth Burke, Region F Educators wrote, When temperatures are below 98.6 F, you may perspire less than 1 quart per day. However, when the need for evaporative cooling kicks in, you perspiration rate can increase to 1.5 quarts PER HOUR. If you aren't drinking 1.5 quarts per hour under extreme conditions, you will start becoming dehydrated. Your perspiration rate will decrease, you will feel hotter, your heart rate will increase, and your judgement will start to become clouded. If you are a competitive endurance rider, you can probably go at least 300 miles without stopping. If you are averaging 75 mph, that's four hours. You may need to consume 6 quarts of water in that period of time when the temperature exceeds 110 F. Rain: I am never afraid to ride in the rain; except when I get wet. There are multiple challenges for any rain rider. If you ever rode motorcycle in the rain and got thoroughly wet, stopping in an air-conditioned building to wait out the rain is a miserable adventure. Rainwater is usually colder and chills your body. Heat loss can occur 25 times faster than in normal air temperature. There are two decisions you can make in the event it rains, to ride or not to ride. If your decision is to ride, staying dry and warm. Your rain gear should be the brightest clothing you own. When rain strikes, there is no time to search for your rain clothing. You should place your rain gear in different color bags for quick identification. Make sure that your rain gear fits properly. The most irritating moments of your life will occur when you experience rain water dripping off your helmet down your back: if you ever experienced this let s sit and have coffee or tea and talk about it. During rain riding, slow down. With good tires, your bike can hold onto the wet surface. However, driving at posted speeds is not advisable. Turn on all of your available lights. I found that Rain-X works well on my face shield. In the event of lightning, immediately seek cover. Sand Storm A dust storm usually arrives suddenly, striking with little warning, suddenly dropping vision and making riding a motorcycle hazardous. Once you are in the midst in a sand storm, the decisions you make may save your life. If you can, leave the roadway and turn off your lights. Leaving your lights on may allow motorist to follow your lights as a guide to where the road leads, causing read end vehicle crash. You should move away from your bike just in case your bike is struck by a vehicle If you cannot leave the road, slow your speed, turn on lights and sound your horn occasionally. Use the painted centerline to help guide you. Look for a safe place to pull off the roadway. If you are wearing a full-face helmet, keep it on. Visibility is significantly reduced. Sand and dust storms move quickly usually lasting a few minutes. (NOAA, Office of Climate, Weather, and Water Services) When preparing for a ride, think safety. Be safe for the ones who love you. 12 We ve all heard the old saying safety in numbers, whether it's walking at night or hiking in the mountains. But what about riding in a group? It s certainly a fun activity, but the fun for many can be diminished if some basic group riding guidelines are not followed. Have you ever been in a Mass Ride where each rider is doing their own thing and paying little attention to the other riders in the group? We see it all the time and maybe these groups prefer this style of group riding. Clearly, some general rules are desirable to ensure a safe and predictable ride. The following is a brief review of the GWRRA techniques and guidelines for group/team riding: Ride prepared: Carry first aid kits, cell phones, and appropriate riding gear to address weather conditions that may be encountered. Ride in formation: The staggered riding formation (see diagram below) allows a proper space cushion between motorcycles so that each rider has enough time and space to maneuver and to react to hazards. A single-file formation with a minimum 2-second following distance is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of poor visibility or poor road surfaces, entering/leaving highways, or other situations where an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is needed. Arrive prepared: Arrive on time with a full tank of gas. Plan the ride: All participants should be aware of where they are going and how they are going to get there. Schedule stops for gas, restroom breaks and sightseeing.. Hold a Riders Meeting: Discuss things like the route, rest and fuel stops, hand signals, and CB use. Assign a Lead and Drag (tail) rider. Both should be experienced riders who are well versed in group riding procedures and have completed the GWRRA Road Captain course. The Leader and Drag should be aware of each rider's skill level before the ride and monitor the riders during the ride. Keep the group to a manageable size: The typical group size is 5-7 motorcycles with 5 being optimal. It may be desirable to break large groups into more manageable teams. Mechanical and medical issues: If a rider has a problem and drops out of formation, the Drag will communicate this to the Lead and stop to assist. The Lead will then find a safe location to stop the rest of the group. Obstacles: Any member who observes a pothole or other road hazard should use the appropriate hand signal to alert following riders. Since my newsletter editor won t let me get overly wordy on this subject, I ll again state that this was a brief review of group riding guidelines. There are many more topics covered in the GWRRA Team Riding seminar and members are encouraged to attend one at their earliest convenience. Who knows, you may learn some new tips and gain a better understanding of group riding techniques. Be Alert because Accidents Hurt! Ride Aware! 12

I t is great weather to be out on the bike, other than the wind! As of this writing the 40 to Phoenix is going on. We have made this trip several times and have enjoyed each time. Getting to ride is awesome but getting to see old friends and meeting new ones is the best part of the trip. If you have never made the trip I suggest you put it on your bucket list of future trips. You won t be sorry. Let us introduce our NM District chapters COY s and IOY s: Chapter F Gary & Margie Green COY Jack Sidler - IOY Chapter R Tom & Lorraine Weingates COY Congratulations to each and every one of you. You represent your chapter very well. Thank you for all you do. Hope you have fun representing your respective chapters throughout this year. Due to work we will not be able to attend Hoot in the Ute but hope you get to go and are registered. We look forward to hearing all about it when you get back. Let us know what your chapters are up to and we will put it out to the district. Hope to hear from you all soon. Motorcycle riding is about friends and family, that s what GWRRA has always been about. There are people who we meet at Rallies and Gatherings that become part of our motorcycle family and those friendships continue and grow.. 14
