2 Hi Chapter J, Can you believe this year is over half gone already!! Where does the time go? I hope everyone is getting a lot of riding time in. There is a lot of fun things happening this month: Central IN Ride In, Region D/Michigan Combined Rally and then there is Wing Ding 39 in Grapevine, Texas. A lot to go to and a lot of good riding to get there. If you are going to any of these, please be safe and watch out for the other guy. Thirteen of us went to the Mayberry Café in Danville, IN on July 15th. The weather was perfect and we had a good time. Got there early enough this year for some of our members to go to the Farmer s Market right in front of the Café. Really fun day with good food and good company. Hope more of you will go next year. There are some major changes coming to GWRRA in I have received information as well as videos on these changes. I will bring all the information I have printed out to our August Meeting. Obviously, I cannot bring the videos, but I will try to pass on to you what is in them. It all sounds like good things they are changing and trying to make it better and simpler and easier for its members, especially at the Chapter Level. Needless to say, we are a small chapter with all of us being senior members in age and the majority of us are lifetime members in GWRRA. Most of our chapter members do not ride anymore, but that is not to say that we are not still an active chapter in GWRRA. We have all been in this chapter for many years, taken many long trips to Wing Dings and other rallys and events no matter where they were. So many wonderful memories we have all made together and we now enjoy sitting around and talking about some of those trips, good or bad, and trust me we had some scary times, like a tornado in Mississippi I believe it was or the rain storms we rode through going to Billings, MT, twice. I can guarantee you that not one of us would trade a single moment of those trips even in scary weather. So now that we don t ride or even attend most events now, we are still part of GWRRA. We still have a Wednesday night dinner together all year long and I try in the summer months to plan a chapter event at least once a month, we don t always make it, but we do try. Our chapter gets real small in the winter months when we loose several members to warmer climates, but they always come back in the spring and rejoin our activities. Don t know why I got on this walk down memory lane about our chapter. I guess talking about changes in chapters and all got me started. Anyway, they have been wonderful years of riding and having fun with friends. As I noted on page #3, we have some chapter members who are having some medical problems so keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Give them a call or send a card just to let them know you are thinking of them. Support of friends means a lot at times like these. I don t go into detail about anyone s personal medical problems because I don t feel it is for me to do that. I just like our chapter members to be aware of those who need our thoughts and prayers. Don t forget we are planning on going to the Central IN Ride IN on Sat. August 5th in Alexandria. We had a good time last year. Put it on your calendar and plan on going. We will leave Kohl s at 10:00 AM. Be careful out in this heat as it can be brutal. Safe riding. Gwen

5 GROUP RIDING Riding with a group of motorcyclists is one ot the great pleasures of the two-wheeled lifestyle, but it can also hold hidden dangers. If you decide to join a group of motorcyclists, you will want to keep the following points in mind as you amble down the road: Plan Ahead Devise a plan for on-the-road communication, agreeing on arm signals to represent low fuel, road hazards, upcoming turns, etc. will make it easier to know who needs what when wind noise prevents verbal exchanges. Trade cell phone numbers in case the group separates. Also, plan your route in advance. Ride in a Staggered Formation When Possible When road width permits, ride on alternating sides of the lane. Doing so will enhance the visibility ahead and help create a safe space around each bike. Single file riding might be necessary on tight roads, but try to maintain as much space around each bike as possible. Look Ahead Don t target fixate on the bike ahead of you; if that rider happens to go off the road or hit an obstacle, it s far too easy to simply follow in their path if you re staring at them. Maintaining a 2-second cushion from the bike ahead will give you more reaction time in case something goes wrong. Pass One Bike at a Time While it s important to maintain a cohesive group when you re riding together, it s also a good idea not to pass slow moving vehicles as a group; pass one by one, and each rider will have better visibility, quicker exit routes in case space suddenly gets compromised and a less stressful passing experience. Be Predictable It s easiest (and safest) to follow riders who are smooth, logical and predictable in their technique. Don t pull any surprise maneuvers and the group will more likely arrive safely at their destination. Ride Your Own Ride Group riding can bring out our competitive streak and it s important not to get trapped in the game of trying to be the fastest rider. Public roads are not the place to practice high-performance riding techniques. Gene Clark, Chapter Educator
