1 Monthly Meetings 3rd Thursday 6:00 pm eat 7:00 pm meeting Golden Corral 3360 Green Mount Crossing, Shiloh Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge December 2013 Winter is now set in with our first measureable snow. Our Christmas Party was enjoyed by many and it is now time to start planning for the New Year. Our Rider Educator Martha Ribbing has done a great job putting together classes for last year and now it is time for the New Year. We can all work towards the Level Program and hopefully some will pursue the different levels. I know Betty and I are working to better ourselves and I hope others do the same. If you are interested Martha will be more than willing to assist. It would be nice if our Chapter participated and received the recognition it deserves. As everyone knows by now we have two new Officers in our Chapter. Treasurers will be Mike and Karen Morgan, and our MEC will be Carol Evans. Let me take this time to Thank Vicki Dillard and Jean Potwora for a great job they have performed. Their endeavors have made this Chapter even better than it ever was. We will be having an Officers meeting in the near future to develop different rides for the upcoming season and if anyone has any ideas feel free to contact any of the officers and let them know. We will be trying to finalize the different dates for the overnight rides and monthly events. Right now it looks like we will be going to Alamosa Ia. to see the Motorcycle Museum and the home of American Pickers in Luzerne Ia. Also we will take a four day trip to Tip Top Mountain in Tenn. All of which will be great riding. Winter Warm-up is just a few weeks away and I hope we will have a good turnout. Last year we won a new award that Mary had developed Chapter Pride and I hope we can do it again! I recently sent out an from Mary talking about the rally, and I hope everyone took the time to read it. There will be games, entertainment and other activities to keep everyone busy. If you have not made reservations now is the time to do so. Let s show up with the largest majority of members from our Chapter and show others what we are about. Allow Betty and I along with the staff of Chapter O to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and all the happiness that everyone deserves! 2 From the desk of Martha Ribbing Rider Educator We ve finalized the classes we re going to be offering for the next four months. A schedule is included in this newsletter. Don t let some of the titles for the seminars fool you. Nobody is going to be asking you to volunteer for anything or to do any jobs. All of the information, whether from the Rider Education side, the Leadership Training side, or even the Member Enhancement or Motorist Awareness areas, is designed to inform you on the workings of our organization but to also enable you to utilize this information in your daily life. Who couldn t use some tips on time management or understanding why we need to support and nurture the awareness of our hobby with the general public? I m sure we all have the opportunity to speak in front of a group whether it s our riding friends or the parents or grandparents group at the local school. Wouldn t it be convenient to understand some of the tips and tricks the pros use to convey their messages so eloquently? If you think you can t gain anything from the courses at least come over and support the presenters. We ve planned a sponsor dinner in the area after each seminar session. We spoke with Cindy from Ravanelli s and explained our plans and she assured us they re just as happy to see us visit the Shiloh location as they would be to host us at the Collinsville facility so we ve scheduled dinners at Shiloh since it s just down the street from the seminars. Okay, a few miles down the street but you get the idea. Come and join us in starting the new year with a broad spectrum of available training. Who knows? 4 Night Before Christmas By: Ed & Vina T was the night before Christmas and all through the garages Not a motorcycle was rumbling, except for Santa Claus's. The leather was hung in the closet with care in hopes that nice weather soon would be there. Our bikes were all nestled snug under their covers with visions of blacktop and burning up rubber. With Momma in her bandana and I in my skull cap We had just settled down for a long winters... nap. When out on the lawn, arose such a rumble I sprang from the bed and I started to grumble. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear But a pack of motorcycles, with riders in gear, With one old rider so lively and quick I knew in a moment it must be a biker named Nick. He was dressed in red Leather, from his head to his foot And his clothes were all tarnished with bugs and road soot, A bundle of chrome he had flung on his back. Down the chimney he came, carrying a big red sack. He spoke not a word but went straight to his work As he filled all the bike boots, then turned with a jerk, And laying a finger aside of his nose And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose. He sprang to his bike, to his team gave a sign As they all cracked their throttles and got into a line, Now Honda, Now Harley, Now Triumph and Indian On Kawi, On Suzuki, On Yamaha and Victory. But I heard him exclaim as he roared out of sight Keep the rubber side down and have a good ride. 5 Trip to Key West By: Dan & Carol Evans Once upon a time in November of 2013, three Gold Wing Trikes took a ride to Florida. On these bikes were Chapter O members Harvel and Lynn Wallace, Ray and Mary Ruder, and Dan and Carol Evans. Since two of the members would be considered fair weather riders, we decided to haul the trikes on trailers to a meeting place in Floral, Florida. Harvel and Lynn have wintered there for the last seven years so they made very good hosts and guides. We took two days to make the 1000 mile trip to Floral, arriving on Saturday evening. Bikes unloaded and suit cases in the motel, we were ready for Sunday touring. We headed out on back roads full of scenic beauty and wild life on our way to the Atlantic coast at Daytona Beach, Florida. What was really nice was Harvel and Lynn also knew all the good places to eat. They also knew the best ice cream joints in Florida. Back to the motel after a long day of 230 miles, we put the trikes to bed so they could get some rest and be ready for the next day. Monday, Veterans Day, we met for breakfast and headed for the Gulf side of Florida. We stopped off at the Weeke Wachee Springs so the boys could see the mermaids. I don t know if it had any effect on the guys but they all purchased diving equipment afterward. By the way everything State run was free that day. Tuesday morning after breakfast we headed for Key Largo. Harvel and Lynn could not go because of plumbing problems at their resort cottage. Ray and Mary Ruder stepped up to the plate as they have vacationed in Florida many times. They know every good place to eat all the way to Key Largo which is 350 miles. Later, we checked into Holiday Inn at Key Largo, definitely a first class hotel at fair prices. Wednesday morning we headed south to Key West, 100 more miles. Parking is limited but we found our way into the Hogs Breath Saloon where we had great food and fun. After a little store front shopping for the girls, we headed back to Key Largo where a soft bed awaits. Thursday morning back to Floral Florida, 81 degrees and sun shining. Friday morning we were ready for another tour with Harvel and Lynn but after breakfast it started to rain so we cut the vacation short one day and headed back to Illinois. We wish the group could have been there. Thank you Harvel and Lynn Wallace for your hospitality and fellowship. 5
