We just spent the day in Melbourne, Florida watching a ball game between the Mets and the Nationals. It was 80 O at game time with a gentle sea breeze and a hazy -- no sunburn -- sky. Unfortunately we are not riding our motorcycles like those arriving up the road 150 miles for Bike Week at Daytona. The warmth has done some good curing the bacterial infections both of us got from a Roanoke Winter. Hopefully the infection will be gone by the time we return to Roanoke on the 7 th of March in time for the meeting at SRUMC. We had a motorcycle ride to Abingdon scheduled for Saturday 5 th of March. Unfortunately I aborted it because of the weather predictions. It s snowing in Roanoke right now (11PM/March 3 rd ) but the weather in Roanoke is going to get better and there are a lot more rides to come. Be sure to check your 3/9/2016 CHAP K NEWSLETTER PAGE 1 OF 14 Pub. 1

Ride Schedule. Rides in the near future include mystery rides on the 9 th, 12 th, 16 th, 23 rd and 30 th of March. Richard, Chubby, Dave or Darrell are leading these rides. All of them know the roads of western Virginia very well. Show up at Bojangles on US-220S next to Outback at 10:30 AM and they will take you on a mysterious ride to places that will surprise you. Ahead of time call one of them and let them know you are planning to ride [Richard , Chubby , Dave , or Darrell ] Reminder Our yearly fund raiser, the Chili Cook-Off is rapidly coming up on the 19 th of March. To be successful, Diana, our Chili Cook- Off coordinator, needs your help and participation and don t forget to invite a friend or two or three to join us at the Vinton Senior Citizens Center at 820 E Washington Ave. On the 26 th of March Bobbie Jo is coordinating a dinner at Luigi s on Brambleton Ave. Luigi s has supported our newsletter ads for many years. They have great Italian food. Let s have a big crowd and a fun dinner night. Let Bobbie Jo ( ) know your intentions. We have had four events/rides since the 1 st of the year with an average attendance of twentyone. This is a pretty good start for Let s get even better as the year progresses. Thank you for your support Don t forget our gathering on the 14 th of March. There are some other events for your calendar. They include The spaghetti dinner by our neighbors in Salem. Mark your Calendars now so you won t forget. 2 nd April is also the day for our T-Clock at Bobbie Jo and Durwood s. After the T-Clock we will all ride to the Spaghetti Dinner. Chapter W, in Chester, is having a poker run in July. See the flyer for more detail. Pat & Emil Kuelz CHAPTER K TEAM COORDINATORS /9/2016 CHAP K NEWSLETTER PAGE 2 OF 14 Pub. 1

UNDIGESTED KNOWLEDGE FEBRUARY WINNERS Danny Hughes won Progressive. Chubby won Spirit. Barry & Betty and Darrell & Chubby won the 50/50 pots. DANNY S WISDOM For those of you that ride in all types of weather, can I give you a few tips? You say- "what does he know, I've been riding for years. I know everything I need to know." Well, maybe you forgot or weren't thinking about what danger you could be in. What about salt on the road during snow? If left unattended it is corrosive, and after time can eat away the paint, lead to rusting problems. Salt is activated by heat, so the corrosive effects speed up when the weather warms up. Another tip; what about rain/wet roads and things in and on the roads? Painted lines can be slick, the different surface textures are worse. You think running through a puddle is okay. What if that puddle is a large pot hole? It could throw you and/or damage your bike. Right after a first rain, the oil from vehicles become very slick areas. Those pretty rainbows you see on the road mean danger. Avoid the middle of a lane. Slowdown in hazardous conditions. Oh, I forgot that one. Thanks anyway, Many people think they have the right answers. Even give you the correct answers, but fail to put these answers into practice. All of you have a lot of miles under your belt. Some of you have been through the good, some bad and some ugly circumstances. The knowledge you get from good speakers and books will not do you any good unless you use this knowledge wisely. This is training for life. Seek to learn whenever there is a chance. You are not getting any younger. Don't waste a good part of your brain. There will be seminars and courses coming. It takes one day out of 365 days to get good information to use wisely. Put it into practice. Brake hard or brake slow and easy. Swerve quick and fast. What if the way isn't clear? Can you corner at five miles or slower, and still stay up? What lane is best for your travels? How far ahead do you see? Do your eyes scan 180 o? Use your mirrors to see the other 180 o. Look twice, you may not see what is there. How do you react in tight, close or hazardous conditions? Let us all plan for knowledge and safety. This is one thing we work for. Not everything is "live to ride and ride to eat." We need to look smart, be smart and act smart. A lot of people are watching you. We can't be perfect all the time. Let's leave a good legacy. A lot of people on the road don't see you. Dress in the proper gear, to be seen and for protection. Look people straight in the eye if you can. Don't say "make my day". It might just be one. Let them know you are there. Be patient, courteous and always say thank you. This will give you peace of mind. Remember that riders are dying to be seen. Let s get out there and make a difference. Thank you for lending me your eyes and ears. EDUCATION The GWRRA Education Program (REP) is intended to make the motorcycle environment safer by reducing injuries and fatalities and increasing motorcycle skills and awareness. Through commitment, Education and Application, we can reduce our accident rate significantly. The motorcycle community is already realizing many positive benefits from the GWRRA Rider Education Program. Through the efforts of the Rider Education Officers and 3/9/2016 CHAP K NEWSLETTER PAGE 3 OF 14 Pub. 1

participation of the members and others, we will reach our goal of establishing the safest motorcycle environment possible. Please read and understand what we all can do. (Level 1 is by commitment. Level 2 is by education. Level 3 is by application.) "Let's Roll!" Danny Hughes CHAPTER K CHAPTER EDUCATOR SIGNING ON I realize I have big shoes to fill as your newsletter editor. Thank you, Emil for giving me this opportunity and for your long assignment as newsletter editor. I hope everyone will like my ideas for the newsletter. If anyone has ideas you would like to see here, I d love to hear them! I hope to do Chapter K proud. A moment of patience can prevent a great disaster Jan Rettinghaus CHAPTER K TEAM CHILI COOK-OFF Hi Everyone, This is my final article about our fundraiser which is March 19 th. I am urging ALL to attend. We are asking for chili (of course) and desserts. Also, the prizes for the games are rolling in, many are handmade articles, but we are in need of some manly prizes. So, men, look in your stash. I m pretty sure you ve purchased something that you haven t used that would be perfect for our game prizes, or, something bigger that we can use as a door prize and we have several of those that are very nice too. I m still looking for a few helpers in different areas, so let me know how you would like to help. Thank you, There's joy in the journey as we ride alongside each other Diana Brennan CHAPTER K CHILI COOK-OFF COORDINATOR 3/9/2016 CHAP K NEWSLETTER PAGE 4 OF 14 Pub. 1

HELLO TEAM VIRGINIA! Whether you ride, a Can Am, BMW, Ducati, Harley, Honda, Indian, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Victory or a Yamaha, you are understandably proud of your two or three wheeled machine. As a participating member of GWRRA, you are undoubtedly proud of your chapter as well as its many accomplishments. In its most basic form a chapter is comprised of individual members and is the backbone and building block of the District and GWRRA. In order for any chapter to sustain itself and thrive it must grow and change. Stagnation is often, but not always, the beginning of the end for a chapter. We keep a chapter healthy and invigorated through the succession of Officers; this brings new, different and fresh ideas along with different styles of leadership as well as a changing character and atmosphere to the chapter. Change can be a good thing. You, as an individual member, can absolutely affect such a change. The choice is yours and it s as easy as introducing new participants to the chapter. This generates fresh ideas, fresh enthusiasm and a member base to provide for the succession of officers and continued growth of the chapter. Is growing the chapter the charge of your CD, MEC or chapter officers? No, they are committed to you the member, to ensure that chapter life is fun, that you are informed, having a great time and have the opportunity to take advantage of the programs, training and other benefits GWRRA has to offer. Hopefully your chapter has planned for you great riding destinations, visitation to other chapters, fun activities involving your community and a chance to benefit from GWRRA membership. Here is the key to the whole thing; it is or should be everyone s cause to support and grow your chapter and GWRRA. Let s have some FUN while creating our future, together Kathy and I are excited by the changes that are taking place within GWRRA. As in life, change is sometimes slow and difficult but often necessary. It is easy to implement new programs, new ideas and new concepts, as is happening now. What is much more difficult is to change the attitudes and perception of people. By people we are talking about the membership of GWRRA. This is true not only at the National level, but also at the Regional and District levels. It is particularly difficult at the more intimate chapter and individual levels. Kathy and I would simply ask that you keep an open mind and be patient as GWRRA evolves. The District staff is dedicated to keeping you informed and involved in GWRRA. Open and transparent communications are essential in order to avoid misinformation, misunderstanding and reduce tension. Use the resources available to you, the officers of the next higher level are an excellent resource and source of information. This is true for chapter participants, Chapter Officers, District Officers and so on. If needed your District staff is always available and more than willing to answer your questions. As always, Kathy and I support an open door policy and are here to serve you. John and Kathy Skinner Assistant District Directors Virginia District Times Gold Wing Road Riders Association February 20, 2013 GWRRA WANTS YOU!!! Are you going to Wing Ding in Billings in September? Do you have a talent you would like to share with people from, literally, around the world? GWRRA is looking for a few talented people to participate in a talent show at Wing Ding this year, and that could be YOU. Judging for this event will take place at the talent show at the Tennessee District Rally April If you are interested in having your talent (Serious or Comedy) showcased at Wing Ding you need to get your application in for the show in Tennessee. Application forms for this show are on the Tennessee website at The top 2 acts from that show will be submitted to Phoenix for inclusion in the International Talent Showcase. Let s show home office and the rest of GWRRA that Region N has some of the best talent in the organization. I know you will make me proud. 3/9/2016 CHAP K NEWSLETTER PAGE 7 OF 14 Pub. 1
