Barbara is recovering very well and was able to attend a family wedding in Ohio. Steve is having to remind her not to over-do it. Jack is continuing to do well and has been able to join us at several Chapter K functions. Bobbie Jo has been fighting acute bronchitis for about 2 weeks, but seems to be getting better. Pam has a cyst on her back and may require surgery. The doctors are starting with injections. Let s keep all these members in our thoughts and prayers. May Birthdays 18 th P.D. Thompson 22 nd J.W. 2 EEE REPORTS April began with T-Clock at Bobbie Jo and Durwood s house. Our motorcycles were checked out and declared, Ready to ride. While the inspections were going on, some attended a corider course. After lunch there was more education with a Motorcycle Awareness Seminar. We ended the day by going to VA-X s Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser. About twenty eight of us participated in this fun and busy day. It was great to have PD Thompson joining us. Thank you Bobbie Jo and Durwood for hosting this very good day. Twenty four attended our last April 11 th Gathering. Our next Gathering on May 9 th features a visit by the Virginia State Police. They are not coming to give us all summons, but rather to answer our questions as to how the traffic laws can help keep us safe when we ride our motorcycles. Get your questions ready and fire away. On April 16 th nineteen VA-K s took to the back roads riding to Draper Virginia. We had lunch at the Draper Mercantile where the deserts are something special. After lunch Barry returned us home on more back roads. From my viewpoint it looked like everyone had a happy time. We need more rides like this one. On April 23 rd fourteen members along with their spit shined motorcycles attended the Vinton Car Show. We used this opportunity to promote Motorcycle Awareness. From my vantage point the bikes clearly outshined the cars. I noticed a rather spry Jack Dillard showing off his spiffy looking BMW and we all got a chance to give a hug to a smiling Jean Hudson. Thanks to Jan Rettinghaus for coordinating with the car show organizer to make this event possible. We need to do it again. Tuesday ice cream rides began in April. Three folks went on the first ride and two on the second. A lot of Wednesday morning rides were abandoned for lack of participation. During April we had three well attended events but rides made a poor showing. We need to address this condition at our monthly meeting and make the changes that make these rides more attractive. Think about it. I m wondering if we could plan some fund raisers that combine riding with adding to our pot of gold. Brainstorming - when was the last time you took a picture of you and your spouseor significant other on your shinny steed that you rode to one of the many scenic sites in South Western Virginia; then had it framed and mounted on the wall of your family room? Do your own brainstorming and come up with a suggestion! Mother s Day is Sunday May 8, Let s all, for sure, celebrate the one who gave you life and love. My mom passed away long ago but her memories strongly linger whether it was her advice, her cooking, her work ethic, her example, but mostly her love. In contrast my wife s mother just recently passed away (September 2015) at the age of 98. She lived with us for the last ten years. I m sure Pat s memories are very strong. Just the other day she reminded me that she has never been able to duplicate her mother s corn bread which, she decided, was infinitely superior to her own, and since her mother is gone her mom s corn bread will only get better each time Pat makes a batch of her own. The day before Mother s Day is the Kentucky Derby. The Chapter is going to have a Kentucky Derby Day at Bobbie Jo and Durwood s house. This day is not about bikes it s about bonnets, bow ties, food and a Derby dessert, followed by cheering on your favorite horse on the big screen. Let s have a big turnout. May 14 th is Chapter V s CHICK N PICK 2PM, $9 for Single $16 for Couple at the Bedford Church of God, 1212 East Main Street Bedford, VA. Pat & Emil Kuelz LEADING THE CHAPTER K TEAM APRIL WINNERS Richard Bowles won Spirit and Darrell Quesenberry won the $ /50 pot. There was no progressive winner again, so the pot continues to grow. DANNY S EDUCATION CORNER WHO S IN CONTROL? In the early days there was no king in Israel. People did what was right in their own eyes. We could get into a lot of trouble that way. War and hate come from this kind of thinking. If we didn t have leaders to tell us what we should and should not do, there would be chaos beyond our control. Think about it: Who taught us to obey traffic signs and signals? Who taught us to ride better and control our motorcycles? What better way to learn about bike life than from a good teacher from GWRRA. There is more education out there than we can absorb. So, what say ye we need to take in all the smarts that we can while we are still young. You do have some choices. Whenever something comes available we will need it. Most modules are good for two and/or three years. What would part of a day do if it would help you to be in control of your motorcycle and to be able to help save a life? Well done is better than well said The more education we have, the higher up on the Level s chart we can go. Who said: I regret that I have but one life to give to my country. 4 RIDING GEAR & SAFETY Don t you love the rebirth of spring, the long days of summer, the colors of fall, and the briskness of winter? Of course the climate of each season affects our routine. We dress differently, enjoy different foods, depending on the season of the year We can ride more or ride less. But we wear protective gear all year long. Right? We dress for the slide, not the ride. There is some good hot weather gear. During the cold, we can layer up. With HEAT We are taught to ride it out. Tuck in and hold on when you can. There are parts on a Gold Wing that help protect you. Not shorts and flip flops. Wearing bright colored gear from tip to toe will help people see you better. Let Him that is in control take you through it. Safety is forever. CPR/FIRST AID MODULE Remember The CPR/First Aid module is Saturday, June 4, 2016, 9am to 2pm at South Roanoke United Methodist Church. (Corner of Jefferson St. and 24 th St.) Upper door on 24 th St. (gym). The cost is $30.00 and needs to be paid in advance. Well worth the time and money. Please see Bobbi Jo ASAP. The life you save may be family, a friend, a neighbor or your own. We will not get paid any more, but we will feel a lot better that we can make a difference.
