2 Sams Desk Hello to all. It is hard for me to believe I am writing this for the September Newsletter. The days are getting shorter, but I am really hoping for an Indian summer. With all the rain this year, it would be really nice to have some sunshine before winter. If anyone knows what the Almanac is predicting, please let me know. I predict a long warm fall. Hope I m right. I am having many of our volunteers to the Gazebo on Monday the 29 th of August, to appreciate them for all they do for us. Jimmy the Crooner will be playing that evening, and this is why I have them that day. So they can stay on and visit with you all while enjoying some music. Also, it sounds like the Thursday night crew, Earl Stone and friends will be starting back on Sept. 8 th. He is trying to get a crew together to start back. As for Tuesday nights, Shirley will be here Monday for the dinner. I will ask her then if she and Ernie will be playing on alternating Tuesday nights this winter, and see when they will start back. Watch for it on the calendars. As for Monday night Gospel music. Since we lost our friend Audrey Baron this year, I feel that Diane will not be returning with the Gospel singers. I will be searching a new group to volunteer Monday nights during winter. But at this time it seems that we will not have Gospel music on Monday nights. As soon as I find a group, I will update you all. August was many staff on holidays, I hope this didn t affect you at all. However, we were able to do a few trips including my place. It is such a joy to have you visit. Especially when Cindy gets to come down and eat and help cook hotdogs, and serve meals. I think is it reminiscent of her Activity Coordinator days. And of course we enjoy spending time with all of you, and often we are too busy to just visit with you all and spend time. This summer was the first time we had a few nights of entertainment by Richard and his friend Dennis. As they live in Arizona in the winter and only return in summer, it works perfect to have a few nights of music in the summer when all our other musician are on hiatus. If you enjoyed the music and you see our wonderful Ivan Strang, please thank him. He was the one that made the connection to Richard and Dennis. The feedback I got from some residents was well received. I think I will send them a thank you card, and hope they can do the same next summer. Amanda is taking you all on a new picnic to the Shining bank area in September. It is a picnic we have not been to before. I recently floated to Warns Place with friends and think it will be very enjoyable. It is a beautiful spot so I hope the weather cooperates. Amanda s Mom and Grand will be there I am sure. Sam s Desk, Assistant Manager/ Activity Coordinator. NEWS FROM Page 2
3 SEPTEMBER QUOTE OF THE MONTH Page 3 Good Clean Funny Humor!
4 Page 4 Qoute of the Month: By all these lovely tokens September days are here, With summer's best of weather And autumn's best of cheer. Birthstone of the Month: Sapphire, the birthstone of September, is most desired in its pure, rich blue color but is present in almost every color including pink, yellow and green. In the Middle Ages the gem was believed to protect those close to you from harm and also represented loyalty and trust. Birth Flower of the Month: Aster With their lush texture, rich hues and wildflower beauty, it's easy to see why asters have had a long association with magical powers. In ancient times, it was believed that when aster leaves burned, their perfume could drive away evil.
5 QUESTION OF THE MONTH: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOR- ITE SUMMER HOLIDAY MEMORY? I AM STARTING A NEW ARTICLE IN OUR PAPER SPOTLIGHTING THE BIRTHDAY PEOPLE OF THE MONTH. Rubin Adam:Las Vegas, Reno, Salt Lake City, Tijuana Mexico and Lake Tahoe. Me and my wife and a few friends made a round trip in the motor home. It took us about a week. My favorite part of the trip was Las Vegas. I remember playing poker and winning $40 off of it. Osyoosis Bc. Me and my wife went there for a week. The sand was so hot I couldn t stand it but she loved it. Jim Murphy: We always had Family Reuinions in on the August Long Weekend. This started in Everyone would take turns hosting it, of course we would all help set up. Some of the places it was held: My sister Larue hosted the first one in Camrose, Ab. My sister Mona hosted in Kamloops, BC. My brother Morris hosted in Williams Lake, BC. My brother Owen hosted in North Battle ford, Sask. My brother Cicle hosted in Kemoa, Ab. My brother duane hosted in Crambrooke, Bc. We played lots of games such as Scrabble, Horse Shoes and tons of kids games! We did allot of travelling it was all done by tent trailers, motor homes, and pick up trucks. Grant Whitehead: Many years ago on July 1st there was a Strawberry Picnic down by fort Mcleod. The whole family 36 grandchildren, 10 brothers and sisters, and my grandmother who was the oldest. WE HAD A GREAT TIME! Swimming, playing ball, and other games. No one could ever touch the bottom of the creek that ran into Old Man River. The Strawberry Feast was tremendous. It was a huge potluck that everyone pitched in on. EVERYONE HAD A GREAT TIME!!! Eva Pinski: N/A
6 Blurb from Amanda, HUGE THANKS TO SAM and her helpers! Your picnic is always a favorite of mine and is always a huge hit! WE SO APPRECIATE IT!!! We are doing our Year End River Picnic. This will be out by Fulham School? Shining Bank Lake area. My parents neighbor is a dear friend of the families and has agreed to let us use his RIVER FRONT property! It has picnic tables and a outhouse that is quite easy to access. I hope you guys can attend! We will have a special lunch prepared for you over the fire as well. You may notice I am trying to add new things to our paper...i am going to do a spotlight article on our birthday residents and ask them a question for the month. So we can reminisce and share some fond memories. So please let me know what you think of the idea or if you have any other ideas for me. I hope September brings warm weather and lots of smiles and laughter our way. Thanks guys!
7 The Town of Edson. What does it take for a place to become a town? In the case of Edson it was rapid expansion and population explosion. On August 10 th, 1910 the population stood at 15 residents, bout by January 1911 the population ballooned to 490. January also saw Edson s first village council appointed. Councilor Lloyd stated in February of that year, at a meeting in the Amity Club Room attended by a large gathering, that Edson was restricted by the prohibitive rules of village council. The difficulty for civic administration was growing with the expansion of the town Everyday services that were required for a growing population =, such as sewage, water, fire department, and sidewalk, incurr3ed large amounts of money and labour. But there was not enough money coming in to cover the costs. The village had to take the next step and incorporate as a town. Municipality laws stated that for a village to become incorporated as a town it had to meet certain criteria- when a village s population neared or exceeded nearly 1000 people, the village council may request a change in town status. A motion was put to the gathering and the resulting vote was unanimously in favour and on September 21 st 1911, Edson s status changed to a town. The population was approximately 800. The next year the population grew to 1233 with 32 local businesses. The town was abuzz with expectation and speculation. Businesses were established that included a local newspaper The Edson Leader keeping the residents up to date with all the news locally and further afield, a few hotels including The Edson and The Boston, bakeries, buthchers, laundry, guides, numerous restaurants, a poolroom, drug store, banks, real estate agents, hardware, lumber and liveries. Whilst the living and working conditions may have been hard, all the necessities to make life easier, were supplied. Entertainment was catered for with the pool room and other establishments some more dubious than others! There were between 10 to 15 blind pigs (illegal drinking establishments) I operation at any given time. If a game of pool or a drop of liquor didn t appeal it was possible to travel to Edmonton with the Grand Trunk Pacific daily passenger service which took only 6 hours. It must have been exciting times being part of a growing community in one of the last frontier towns. If you would like further information on this or other topics please contact the Galloway Station Museum at or visit our website at If you have any stories to share please drop in and chat to one of our staff members at the Galloway Station Museum. The coffee pot is always on.
