2 Page 2 THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Race for Education receipts totaled more than $18,000!!!!! Due to the Warrenton Christmas Parade being held on Friday night instead of Saturday this year, we have decided not to participate. We re hoping that they will move it back to Saturday and then we will try again next year. There will be a Casino Night kickoff meeting on November 28 th at 7:00 p.m. in the science room. This is your chance to get in on the ground floor and share your ideas. Remember, this is our second biggest fundraiser next to the Race for Education but it is also a huge amount of fun even the planning. Breakfast with Santa is on December 8 th. Carol Vargas is coordinating the event and although she is extremely talented and well-organized, she can always use more help, especially at the event itself. Please contact her at cvargas@asce.org if you can help. And if you can t help, we certainly hope you can attend. It s a great event. The new directories were sent out via password protected to all the families who opted to be listed in the directory. If you did not receive one or could not open yours please let me know. There are also some printed copies available in the office for those who cannot print their own. I did not have the pre-school families on my original list so I will send those out very soon. So sorry. If you have any questions, comments, or ideas for the PTO, you may contact me directly. My address is nkchipman@gmail.com. Nancy Chipman PTO President
3 Page 3 School News We will begin WINTER UNIFORM on Monday, November 19th. The uniform guidelines follow if you need further details. Criminal Background Checks for Volunteers & VIRTUS Requirements In accordance with diocesan policy, only those parents who have completed the criminal background check are eligible to volunteer in the school. Those who have not yet completed the background check process may request a packet of forms from the front office. Virtus training is required for all volunteers. It is provided by the Arlington Diocese. Go to to choose a class and register on line. We are once again requesting pictures of any soldiers that are relatives or friends that you would like St. John s School to keep in their prayers. Please send them to the office and we will put them up on our Military Board. We are looking for individuals interested in substituting in our school. It can be used as volunteer hours or paid position. Please call or come by the office for more information. Parent Rosary Group: The parent Rosary Group meets on Tuesdays in the Music Room after drop off. We will meet to pray for our families, school, parish, and our own special intentions. This will be a great way to build our school community and lift up our voices together in prayer. Little ones are invited to join us and play while we pray. No experience necessary; you don't even have to be Catholic! Guides and Rosaries will be available. Contact Teresa Paccassi for more information: , tpaccassi@msn.com The PTO of St. John School is sponsoring a Festival of Wreaths, November 26 through December 8. The main halls of the Preschool and Elementary school will be decorated with wreaths designed by teachers, staff and parents. Donations of $2.00 per child are still being accepted. Place donation in envelope marked PTO Wreaths. The Wreaths will be sold by Silent Auction with bidding sheets accompanying each wreath. Bidding will end at 11:00 am December 8, at the Breakfast with Santa. Winners will be notified. Thank you for supporting the Festival of Wreaths! God bless you! Lunchroom/Playground Parent Volunteers Needed! Shifts available any day of the week for the following lunch and recess schedule: Lunch grades 4-8: 11:10 11:35 (grades K-3 are on the playground) Lunch grades K-3: 11:35 11:55 (grades 4-8 are on the playground) Lunchroom volunteers help the little ones get going with their food/drinks as needed and make sure that everyone is moving along with their lunches. Playground volunteers make certain that the safety rules are being followed, and are available for assistance when needed. The kids really get a kick out of seeing Mom or Dad at school, and the extra level of safety and attention given to our children is invaluable. Please contact Kelly Pettit for more information at (540) or by at KayleighKP@gmail.com.

6 Page 6 St. John the Evangelist Catholic School Dress Code The dress code provides a standard for our students, which fosters an environment conducive to learning and respectful behavior. Final decisions regarding the school uniform rest with the principal/administration. Uniform Requirements: School uniforms are to be worn with pride and according to school regulations. St. John students are expected to follow rules of good grooming and modesty. Uniforms are to be clean and in good repair. By complying with school rules regarding the wear of the proper school uniform, children are learning about responsibility and individual pride. All uniforms must be purchased from the designated uniform companies. A uniform non-compliance form will be issued for lack of uniform compliance which must be signed by the parents and returned to school the following day. The second noncompliance will result in calling the parent to pick the student up from school and obtain the correct uniform component out of compliance. The third violation will result in a disciplinary referral signed by the principal and filed in the permanent record. Uniform Guidelines: Shirts must remain neatly tucked in and belts must be worn when wearing pants or shorts. Ties are expected to be pulled up and top shirt buttons buttoned. Girls jumpers and skirts may not be more than two inches above the knee. Middle school girls are required to wear a white camisole under the blouse in the fall and spring when not wearing the vest. Only white undershirts may be worn under dress shirts. Tattoos and transfers are not permitted. Students are to maintain neat hairstyles. Hair fads or unusual styles are not permitted. Streaking or any hair color is not permitted. Hair must not go below the brow and must remain out of the face. Boys hair should be neatly trimmed and above the collar. Boys facial hair should be kept shaved. Girls with pierced ears may wear one pair of small post or stud earrings in the lower lobe. Hoops and dangling earrings may not be worn. Boys are not permitted to wear earrings of any kind. Bracelets may not be worn. A religious medal or cross, one simple ring and a watch may be worn. No other jewelry of any kind is permitted. No make-up of any kind is permitted nor is nail polish permitted. Hair accessories (barrettes, headbands, etc.) must be neutral in color. Black, brown, gold, silver are acceptable. All students in grades K-8 will wear the gym uniform to school on the assigned PE days and remain in the uniform all day. During winter uniform season the sweatpant is required. Shorts may be worn under the sweatpant and may be removed for PE class only. The optional grey half zip sweatshirt or maroon fleece from the designated uniform companies may be worn in the classroom on the assigned PE days. Students may wear uniform sweaters or vests in the classroom. Optional fleece from Flynn and O Hara may be worn, as well, all days including with the PE uniform. Non-uniform jackets and sweaters are not permitted in any classroom. Boys may wear the optional uniform walking short during the fall and spring uniform season. However, the required school uniform (K-4: slacks with polo, 5-8: slacks with oxford, vest and tie) must be worn on Fridays for mass.
