V O L U M E 2, I S S U E 2 Our Favorite Activities! Mountain Biking is fun. I like going on flat roads. Some of the bikes are really fast. The bike trail is easy, but the hills are hard. Sometimes, you have to walk up the hill. My favorite part of Mountain Biking is when we get to ride down the hills because I go really fast and it is a lot of fun. Woodshop -Seth Asher P A G E 3 In Rocketry, you build rockets and launch them. It is fun. You can build many different types of rockets. And when you launch it, you get to press the red button all by yourself. Then, it shoots into the air, goes all the way into the clouds and then a parachute comes out when it starts to fall down. If you re lucky enough, it ll land on Dan lawn and you get to keep it. If not, it ll get stuck on a wire or tree. All in all, you should try rocketry! -Daniel, Asher We have been to a lot of other electives at camp, but Woodshop is our favorite. We like Woodshop because we make a lot of cool projects. For example, we ve made cameras, secret boxes, etc. We used saw drills and sand paper to make them. The most important thing about Woodshop is following the rules. If there weren t any rules, there would be trouble. The rules are simple: wear goggles, wear hair ties, don t touch anyone else s things without permission, clean up after yourself, and listen to your counselors. If you follow these rules, you ll have an amazing time in Woodshop! Woodshop is our favorite! -Kate and Ellie, Abi High Ropes You look up. You see a person on a log, high up in the sky. High Ropes! High Ropes is a fun activity for people who are not scared of heights. There are many obstacles in High Ropes like the Broken Bridge, Vertical Gym, the Cat Walk, etc. If you want to be challenged, I suggest you choose the Vertical Gym. The Vertical Gym can hold 2 people at once, so they normally race to the top. The first one to ring the bell wins! High Ropes also gives out prizes! If you complete the whole course, you get a black bracelet. IF you complete whole course blindfolded, you get a rainbow bracelet. You have to be really brave to do it, so go give it a shot! -Ella, Naomi
P A G E 4 Our Favorite Activities Continued! Cooking is one of the most popular activities at Camp Nah-Jee-Wah! The two people who work at cooking are Brett and Amit. They are both really nice and help you when you need it. In Cooking, everything that you make is gluten free, so if you are gluten free, you can still participate! Since it is a two day cycle, on the first day you make a meal, and on the second day you make dessert. All of the food is delicious! Some things that you can make in Cooking include Shakshuka, Vanilla Pudding, Potato Skins, Peach Cobbler, and Chocolate Chip Pancakes! I love cooking and I think that you should try it! -Amy, Hannah Gymnastics Have you ever been to gymnastics at Nah-Jee-Wah? It is amazing! At Gymnastics, you can learn how to do cartwheels, back flips, handsprings, round offs, summersaults, and many other different things! You get to use balance beams, trampolines, mats, etc! You can also play really fun games with the teachers! The teachers are great because they teach you new things and how to become a gymnast with more and more practice. They are very nice and you do not need to be afraid to talk to them. They also keep you safe! Gymnastics is the place to be! -Lauren, Abi Giant Swing As you probably assume, the Giant Swing is one of the most popular activities in camp. After trying the Giant Swing for the first time, most people love it. But, sometimes people have a bit of trouble taking the risk of going high. When you get strapped into that uncomfortable harness, you get a little nervous. Then, you hold onto a rope that raises you so high into the air that you don t want to look down. Then, Zoe starts counting down from three, and you freeze in your harness and think about what s about to happen. When Zoe finally gets to one, you question yourself on letting go of the rope. But, you finally let go because you know you re about to have a ton of fun. When you let go, you soar as if you re an eagle amongst the trees. For a fraction of a second you re scared, but that doesn t last long. After your turn is over, you walk out with a smile on your face and tell all your friends. -Sophie, Hannah N E W N J W
V O L U M E 2, I S S U E 2 Camp Life P A G E 5 This past week, many kids went on Kfar Teva! Kfar Teva is a camping trip about one mile away from camp in the woods. At Kfar Teva, you sleep in tents, eat special food, and there s even a bonfire! The tents are big with windows and a door. The bonfire is my favorite part the trip! Everything is fun at Kfar Teva, but the bonfire is the best! At the bonfire, we tell stories, roast marshmallows, and have fun! The Kfar Teva trip is awesome! -Louie, Asher Batter Up! On Wednesday, there was a Dan baseball game at Camp Echo. Some kids from Asher were in the game, too. The first 2 people at bat struck out. Then, it was my turn to bat. I stuck out too. The next inning, Camp Echo got a run. But, NJW also got a run, so the game was tied 1-1. We tried our hardest and by the end of the game, the score was 4-2. Nah-Jee-Wah won. OOH AHH NAH-JEE-WAH! -Jack, Asher OOH AHH NAH-JEE- WAH! Dance Competition On Friday, July 10 th, there was a dance competition at Camp Canadensis. Team Naj-Jee-Wah included Zoe, Elena, Rachel, Dara, Lauren, Amanda, and Lian. We danced to the song You Give Me Something. We were wearing white tank-tops and black shorts. The competition was hard but we won first place as a group dance! Check out our camp s website to see the video of us performing! -Elena, Hannah
V O L U M E 2, I S S U E 2 P A G E 6 Visiting Day! On visiting day, there are many activities for you and your parents. Parents arrive between 10:00 and11:00 in the morning. The parents come for 5-6 hours. Most of the activities are open and filled with visitors! During the day, many people visit the shops to pick up their projects. The lake and all of its elements are open, too! After the parents leave, there is a huge water gun fight for the entire camp on Dan Lawn. This is the only day during camp when our families are EVERYWHERE! Can t wait! Don t forget to... -Adam, Dan Visit your child s bunk! Tour NJW/CLC! Go Banana Boating! Swim in the Lake or the Pool! Pick up projects at the shops! Leave an Emoji for your child at the Den! Go on the Giant Swing! Visit Canteen! Watch a preview of Grab lunch in the Dining Hall! Fiddler on the Roof! Splash! Splash! Every year after all the parents leave on Visiting Day, there is an all-camp water-gun fight on the Dan lawn. Every person in the camp is allowed to play, including campers, counselors, and even the directors! Water-guns and buckets of water are some of the many things you can use to soak your friends. If you do not want to participate, you can sit in the Pagoda and hang out with your friends. Hop into your swim gear and slide into your sandals, because you are going to get wet! Some of the rules are: No soap water, no hot water, no head shots, use common sense, and most importantly, have fun! -Ethan, Levi
P A G E 7 The Secret of NJW Lake A fictional story by Hope and Sabrina from Abi Once upon a time, there was a greedy king. The king lost his magical crown. He was furious. One day, he saw a boy on the street. He said to himself, This is a perfect boy for my plan. A few weeks later he saw the boy on the street again and he said to the boy Do you want to live in my palace? The boy said yes and danced all the way to the palace. The palace was an hour away. One month later, the king asked one of his maids if she knew who the boy was. She said his name was Jack. One day the king went in to Jack s room. The king decided it was time to start his evil plans. Out of no were the king screamed at Jack and said, If you don t find my golden crown in 3 days at sun down you will turn into my slave. Jack ran out of the room crying. He ran to Nah-Jee-Wah Lake where it was peaceful. There he swam in the lake. An hour passed and he fell asleep. When he woke up, he felt something sharp on his foot. He went underwater and found a golden crown. Just that moment he remembered what the king had said about his golden crown. Jack was so surprised and danced with joy. He put it on his head and he walked back to the palace. When he got there, everyone was bowing down to him and he just minded his own business. He went to the castle and gave the crown to the king, who died suddenly. The king s maid said, You are king since the king lost his powers so now the kingdom belongs to you. Jack was so excited that he would be the first kid in the world to have power over everybody. He was once a little boy on the streets and now he owned the richest kingdom in the world. It was all because of the Nah-Jee-Wah Lake. That day Jack decided he would rename the palace Nah-Jee-Wah after the lake that saved him. The End
P A G E 8 Camp Mom Camp Mom is here to help solve all of your camp problems! You can write to her with things that are bothering you and she will try to help you find a solution. To write to her, drop her a letter inside of the box outside of the Den that says Camp Mom on it! Dear Camp Mom, Some girls in my bunk are always arguing! We always talk about how we re a family, but then something happens and everyone starts arguing. I always try to stop them, but I don t want to get involved! What should I do? From, Bunk Peace Dear Bunk Peace, I understand your situation, it is definitely not fun when your friends fight! You can t prevent it from happening, but you can deal with it differently! Instead of trying to facilitate their argument yourself, ask a counselor! That s what your counselors are there for! Your counselor will know how to deal with the situation and will gladly try to solve the problem! We all want peace in our bunks! -Camp Mom Dear Camp Mom, Sometimes the Dining Hall serves food I don t like. My counselors always tell me that I have to eat, but I don t want to eat the hot meals every day! From, Picky Eater Dear Picky Eater, Luckily for you, the Dining Hall has many options for campers who don t want to eat the hot meals! Have you ever seen the salad bars? Every single day, at the salad bars, there are many different options to eat! There s always plain pasta, bread, salad, fruit, and toppings! These toppings include: jelly, peanut butter, margarine, eggs, tomatoes, chickpeas, corn, etc! The possibilities are endless, you just need to know where to look! If you need help making choices, ask your counselor! -Camp Mom Dear Camp Mom, I m feeling conflicted because I really want to sign up for a soccer tournament next week, but signing up for it would get in the way of Canteen! I love soccer, but I also love getting Canteen! Which one should I choose? From, Soccer or Snacks? Dear Soccer or Snacks, I understand your dilemma! Canteen is a really fun part of camp! But, you get Canteen twice a week... Soccer tournaments are not as often! In fact, you don t know when the next opportunity to participate in one will be! Have you ever heard of a Canteen Slip? It is for campers who are going to miss Canteen due to a camp event! This allows you to go to the Soccer tournament while still getting Canteen! Just remind your counselor that you need a slip! Then, they will take your request and have your goodies for you for when you come back from the Soccer tournament! I hope this makes your decision easier! -Camp Mom Dear Camp Mom, I am afraid of the deep end in the pool. I m really embarrassed to swim with my friends during Recreational Swim because they love swimming, and they re always in the deep end. I love swimming too, and I want to swim with them, but just not in the deep end of the pool! What should I do? From, Afraid Swimmer Dear Afraid Swimmer, It is totally normal to be afraid of swimming in the deep end! A lot of campers are, so don t feel alone! During Recreational Swim, swim with your friends when they re in the shallow end of the pool. When they choose to go to the deep end, say you want to take a break. Then, you can go play with other friends who are doing something else! -Camp Mom
