1 Chamberlain Recreation Summer 2018 Activity Guide Registration date Wednesday, April 18 th at Chamberlain Community Center. Deadline Friday, May 18 th $20 Late Fee! Contact Recreation Coordinator Ron LaMie with questions Office: Cell:
2 1. Youth Gardening: $10 Youth gardening will have three separate times where the kids will garden with the summer rec employees. Gardeners will learn how to plant and maintain a garden plot while growing their own produce. On the last day the kids will pick their produce for a fresh snack. Days: May 22, June 26, July 30 Location: Sukerson Field Ages 5-12: 5:30 to 6:30 2. Track & Field: $5 This program will focus on introducing your child to the basics of track and field as well as keeping it fun with games and competitions. Learning shot put, long jump, and distance running. Days: May 23, 24, 25 Location: High School Track Complex 3. Floor Hockey: $5 Join in on this new activity, where the kids will learn the basics of playing hockey. We will set up two nets on the courts and play in tennis shoes with hockey sticks. It should be a great experience for everyone involved! Days: Mondays, June 4, 11, 18 Location: Tennis Courts by the swimming pool. 4. Baseball & Softball: $5 Children will focus on learning the fundamentals of baseball and softball through practice, drills, and scrimmages. Baseball & softball activities will be separate if we have enough participants, girls will play softball & boys will play baseball. Days: Tue & Thurs, May 29, 31, June T-Ball: $5 Your child will love t-ball while developing their motor skills for throwing, catching, and hitting. They will be taught through practice and drills for the first 30 minutes and then players will be split into teams for a game. Days: Tue & Thurs, May 29, 31 June 5-21 Ages 5 and 6: 12:00-12:45 if participation exceeds Cooking Class: Session 1 $15 (Capped at 20 participants per age group) Your child will learn about the basics of cooking, measuring, mixing, kitchen safety and clean-up. Each day they will create basic meals using the skills they learned. Days: Tuesdays, May 29, June 5, 12, 19 j Kitchen 7. Flag Football: $5 Get out and play some football! Kids will learn how to throw, catch, block and anything else related to the sport. We also integrate a football scrimmage every day. It is a non-contact program. Days: Wednesdays, May 30, June 6, 13, Tot Time $5 (Capped at 20 participants) This is great opportunity for younger children to get in on the action. Three and four year olds will play a different activity every week. Games are specially designed for this age group like tag and sidewalk chalk. Let your little ones check out this new program! Days: Wednesday, June 6, 13, 20 Location: Swimming Pool Park Ages 3 and 4: 10:00 to 10:45 9. Cooking Class: Session 2 $15 (Capped at 20 participants per age group) Your child will learn about the basics of cooking, measuring, mixing, kitchen safety and clean-up. Each day they will create basic meals using the skills they learned. Days: Thursdays, May 31 June 7, 14, 21 Kitchen 10. Kickball: Free Gather your friends and head to the park for an organized game of kickball with the summer rec staff! We will try all sorts of different kickball games! Days: Friday, June 1, 15 July 27
3 11. Kids Yoga: $5 (Capped at 15 participants per age group) Summer rec is branching out and kids will have a unique opportunity to learn yoga. We are excited to lead these classes and show children ways to keep their bodies healthy with creative movement. Days: Mondays, July 2, 9, 16, Water Safety Day: Free South Dakota Game, Fish, & Parks, Corps of Engineers and the City of Chamberlain are offering a water safety day. Kids will learn about safety along the shore, on boats, how to wear a lifejacket and get the chance to drive a small boat! Day: June 8 Location: American Creek Marina 13. Friday Fishing: Free The City of Chamberlain is teaming up with South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks to offer free fishing at the American Creek Marina. Bait & poles will be provided. Days: Fridays, June 22, 29 Location: America Creek Campground Fishing Dock 14. Dodgeball: $5 Head to the Community Center for organized games of dodgeball with the summer rec staff! Play protect the king, three pin, and different dodgeball games! Days: Mondays, July 2, 9, 16, NEW Lawn Games: $5 At Saukerson Field our summer rec crew will teach bean bag toss, ladder ball, horse shoes and much more. Sign up for this fun opportunity with all your summer favorites! Days: Tuesdays, July 3, 10, 17, 24 Ages 7-12: 1:00-2:00 Ages 5 and 6: 2:00-2: Basketball: $5 Chamberlain loves its basketball, and this will be an opportunity for the kids to experience competition, games, and offseason drills. Days: Tuesdays June 26, July 3, 10, 17, Volleyball: $5 Children will start to understand the sport of volleyball with practice, drills and fun games! Days: Wednesdays, July 11, 18, Arts and Crafts: $15 (Capped at 30 participants per age group) A fun introduction to arts and crafts. Your child will learn about colors, textures, and designs. Each day the kids will make a different project to bring home! Days: Wednesdays, July 11, 18, 25 Ages 10-12: 1:00-1:45 Ages 7-9: 2:00-2:45 Ages 5 and 6: 3:00-3: Ultimate Frisbee: $5 It s time to learn a new game! Come have a blast with the coaches as they teach Ultimate Frisbee. You will learn different ways to throw with fun drills and games! Days: Thursdays, July 5, 12, 19, and Pickle Ball: $5 Try this new exciting game that s a mixture of ping pong and tennis. The kids will learn great hand-eye coordination and an interesting game they can take with them for the rest of their lives. See you there! Days: Thursdays, July 5, 12, 19, 26 Ages 7-12: 1:00-2:00
4 21. Soccer: $5 Soccer is a great sport for kids of all ages. Have a blast watching the kids study the world s most popular sport. Days: Fridays, July 6, 13, Little Tumblers: $5 (Capped at 20 participants) This tumbling class will be a fun way to get those little ones up and moving to release that energy! Hang out with the summer rec crew as they lead the kids in jumps, rolls and all sorts of other activities. Days: Tuesdays, July 3, 10, 17, 24 Ages 3 and 4: 10:00-10: Kids Night Out $5 What s better than food and fun! For this activity the kids can hang out and have a summer rec party! Play a recreational activity, eat some pizza, and finish off with an hour of swimming. Please bring swimsuit. Days: Fridays, July 6, 13, 20 Ages 10-12: (July 7) 4:30 to 7:00 Ages 7-9: (July 14) 4:30 to 7:00 Ages 5 and 6: (July 21) 4:30 to 7: Summer Rec Field Trips: $35 (Capped at 18 participants per age group) We have two special trips planned for the kids this summer. Come join the rec crew as we take the children to the Air Madness in Harrisburg! The kids will spend all morning jumping on trampolines, and playing all the activities offered. Before we head home we will stop for lunch at Pizza Ranch! The bus will leave at 7:30AM and return at 4:00PM. Days: June 25, 27, 28 Days: July 30, 31 August 1 Ages 10-12: (Monday, June 25th) 7:30-4:00 Ages 7-9: (Wednesday, June 27th) 7:30-4:00 Ages 5 and 6: (Thursday, June 28th) 7:30-4:00 Ages 10-12: (Monday, July 30th) 7:30-4:00 Ages 7-9: (Tuesday, July 31st) 7:30-4:00 Ages 5 and 6: (Wednesday, August 1st) 7:30-4: Ping Pong: $5 Get ready for some table tennis! Come to the Community Center and refine your skills in a classic game. This new activity will give the kids a chance to play doubles and single ping pong games. Days: Mondays June 4, 11, 18 Ages 10-12: 1:00-1:45 Ages 7-9: 1:45-2: Super Soaker Wars: $5 (Please provide your own water guns) Get your squirt guns packed and bring them to Saukerson field for a high powered water fight! The field will be set up with many obstacles and we will play games like capture the flag, protect the king, many others. Days: Fridays, June 15, 22, 29 Ages 10-12: (June 15) 4:30 to 6:00 Ages 7-9: (June 22) 4:30 to 6:00 Ages 5 and 6: (June 29) 4:30 to 5: NEW Lacrosse: $5 Lacrosse is a team sport played with a stick and ball. Players use the net of the lacrosse stick to carry, pass, catch, and shoot the ball into the goal. It is a great hand/eye coordination sport and fun to learn. Days: Wednesday, May 30, June 6, 13, 20 Ages 10-12: 1:00-2:00 Ages 7-9: 2:00-3:00 Additional summer activities Race on the River: Chamberlain again will have their annual Race on the River run on Saturday morning. More information to come. Day: Saturday, June 16th Location: American Creek Beach Ages: 8 to adult: 8:00 AM Chamberlain s Inflatable Run: We will continue our Chamberlain 5K Inflatable Run! A run containing multiple inflatable obstacles throughout the route. More information to come. Day: Saturday, July 7th Location: American Creek Beach Ages: 5 to adult: 8:00 AM American Island Days Zombie Run: We will continue our Chamberlain 5K Zombie Run! A run containing multiple obstacles with Zombies at every turn! More information to come. Day: Saturday, August 18th Location: American Creek Marina Ages: 5 to adult: 8:00 AM
5 Overview: Each Child is encouraged to sign up for multiple activities and find things that they enjoy. If you sign up for one activity you will receive a summer rec t-shirt. No activities overlap. Parents will be required to pay a $10 recreation fee per child in addition to the activity fee. This fee will help offset some of the expenses it takes to maintain and operate the facilities and programs in town.
