8 About This Magazine AppleSauce is a bi-annual regional middle school literary magazine serving 17 middle schools in Greater Lawrence. Started in 2000, its main purpose is to showcase the creative talents of sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from the public schools in the communities served by the Greater Lawrence Education Collaborative s Enrichment Partnership: Lawrence, Boxford, Andover, and Methuen. Our mission is: To build bridges among our communities and create opportunities for all students to succeed. Through its many programs, which serve thousands of students from grades K through 12, we strive to nurture the social and cultural bonds between the communities; challenge, develop, and showcase students skills and talents; provide new opportunities for students to develop; and reinforce the educational goals of the participating schools. This is the twenty-eighth issue of AppleSauce. Works are submitted twice a year through the advisors at the participating schools. With the help of our community advisory board and Friends Committee, follow-up readings are held at the public libraries and other venues in our communities. Students interested in submitting pieces to AppleSauce should contact their school s advisor. All submissions must be accompanied by a submission form, which is available from the advisor and from other teachers at the school. Advisors will be submitting pieces to us for the next issue of AppleSauce in the spring of In order to reach a large readership, AppleSeed, AppleSauce and ApplePi are distributed free throughout the Greater Lawrence community-- in the schools, libraries, youth centers, senior centers, other public places, at Mann Orchards in Methuen, Smolak Farms in North Andover and Andover Bookstore in Andover. Each published contributor receives several complimentary copies. Excerpts from the magazines are also available electronically on the CREST website (without the last names). Through the hard copies and electronic copies, we estimate that between 5,000 and 10,000 people read each issue we publish, which is usually about 1,200-2,500 copies, depending on funding. Ideally, we would like to be able to print and distribute 4,000 copies of AppleSeed, 3,000 copies of AppleSauce and 2,500 copies of ApplePi to meet the demand. AppleSauce is made possible by the wealth of local talented young writers and artists, by the collaboration of the dedicated teachers who inspire, challenge, and encourage them, and by the support of the school districts, individuals, foundations, businesses, organizations and PTOs. 10 Praise for AppleSauce Gayle C. Heney AppleSauce gives students the opportunity to showcase their creativity through a professional looking publication that brings together the voices and artwork of 6th 8th graders in several schools and communities. It gives students the ability to share what s in their hearts and minds and encourages public speaking through public launch events. I have seen children and adults listen attentively to what these poets and artists have to say. This reinforces their self esteem and helps builds confidence. As the past poet laureate of North Andover, I am pleased that AppleSauce encourages students to sharpen their poetic and artistic skills while strengthening our Essex County poetry community with these new members. Gayle C. Heney, Producer & Host of the TV series Write Now Former 2-term Poet Laureate of North Andover Matt Kraunelis I believe that it is important for students to participate in the arts at a young age. Early exposure to poetry, visual art, and prose, fosters an appreciation of art and culture that often proves to be a life-long companion. The Apple Magazines offer a unique way for children to cultivate their creativity and see it through to the joy of publication. These magazines are an indispensable asset to the students, the school system, and the entire Merrimack Valley community. Matt Kraunelis, Author and founding member of the Robert Frost Foundation & Grey Court Poets. Jackie Davies, author I was lucky enough to come across copies of all three magazines Apple Seed, Apple Sauce, and Apple Pi and I was impressed by the quality of work produced by the students. The short stories used vivid language and displayed an uncommon sense of story structure pacing, rising conflict, and resolution. The poems were sharp, funny, thought provoking, and adept. The artwork provided a feast for the eyes, ranging in media as diverse as photography, oil painting, watercolor, and pottery. As if that weren t enough, the production value of the magazines themselves was exceptionally high, providing a fitting showcase for the extraordinary work within. Jackie Davies is a noted author of children s books, including: Where the Ground Meets the Sky, The Boy Who Drew Birds: A Story of John James Audubon, The Night Is Singing, The House Takes a Vacation, The Lemonade War, Tricking the Tallyman, Lost. Her website is: Marianne Levis, teacher These literary magazines continue to amaze me! I enjoy reading student pieces, admiring the artwork and photographs as well as the musical notes and lyrics. The student poems and stories are wonderful examples to share with students. They inspire the students to practice the traits of good writing and submit their own writing for publication. The competition is challenging, but worth the effort every semester. I like to use the magazines as a rich source for writing ideas in the classroom. 15 Freezing Zebra Anthony, South Lawrence East Middle School What is Love? Love isn t just some object you can just throw in the trash. No, love is much, much more than that. There is much more to love than you could ever imagine or even hope for. You see, if you could look into your heart and find happiness, joy, or even freedom, then you have found love for someone. If you look into your heart and find hatred, jealousy, or even envy, then you see anger and greed. To eliminate that, you must find something that can replace hatred with happiness; jealousy with joy; and envy with freedom of spirit. You know if your love for someone never dies down no matter how tough the situation is. When your heart is broken, it shatters into a million pieces. 16 Where I m From I m from Lawrence, Massachusetts Sometimes I wish I could live somewhere else I wish I could live in France, Japan, or Africa I wish I could travel the world, know every language and culture there is to know I wish I could see every beautiful scenery and memory there is to know I wish I could live life happily with no one in my way but mysterious new lands. I always remember watching shows on TV about adventures and mysterious places I remember every minute of traveling through the air And I remember every step on the ground that I took on a foreign land But as much as I love those experiences and wishes, I love where I m from I m from Lawrence, Massachusetts Ruth Parthum Educational Complex Lost Petal Tiana Donald P. Timony Grammar School When The Water Drops The Bleak mist Envelops the town. Furious storm clouds Cover the sparkling night sky. The rain starts as a gentle sprinkle Gathering strength and power, until it Begins to pour. The icy water coats the Landscape. Each drop full of pure, refreshing, Water. The once consistent stream begins to Cease. And soon, the resentful clouds begin To clear, releasing the shine of white Moonlight once more. The twinkling Stars begin to peer through the Thick clouds as the night sky Is clear again. Georgia Doherty Middle School page 14 Apple Sauce

17 Playground Fun Inspired by Dylan Thomas Years and years ago, When I would hop all around, Acting as though the ground was lava, When I took the wheel, Like a pirate on a boat. When I climbed the slide, Over and over again, Falling down every time. Before smart phones and technology, Before I started school, When I tried to stay awake in a slide, When I climbed the long metal pole Before playing in the mud. Before many things were made, Before learning to roller skate. When there was snow, And I would plow through it. When I got a ruby-like nose, Red, cold and hard. When I had to leave to go home, Before being lazy, Before sleeping all day, This was the time, The time. Vivien Wood Hill Middle School An Ode To Chocolate As I slurp the chocolaty goodness, My insides warm I giggle with joy. The chill from the winter cold flees, Leaving rosy cheeks behind. I look like Rudolph with his glowing, red nose, but as soon as the mug slips into my hands, I don t care. There is a hint of peppermint Underneath a cloud of whipped cream The flavors intertwine And the peppermint perfects the experience of this ritual. The red and white sets off the brown perfectly, With the help of a white mustache Oh, Peppermint and Whipped Cream, My Chocolate needs you to complete its goal in life. Hands warm! Tongue rejoicing! Stomach leaping for joy! Oh, Hot Chocolate how I love thee! Maria Sacred Hearts School Winter 2014, Vol. XV, No.1 page 15

Ere espacio entre las más bella de mondo para enamorar y Conquistar. The gap between The most Beautiful in the world For Love And conquer Tu eres la más bella del planeta. You are The most Beautiful in the world Eres como el la agues que siempre la necessito You are like The Water That I always Need The Unstable Bridge I walk along the bridge, Shaking I fear it will collapse Right under my feet The annoying song London Bridge is Falling Down Pops into my head, turning my Stroll into a sprint Running as fast as lightning The bridge seems to grow as I run I feel like I m one of the Billy Goats Gruff And there is a troll under the bridge Going to emerge out of the darkness And if the bridge falls because of its monumental feet, I m going down with it The sweltering heat hits my face and I feel like I m melting Again, I run and run and run; this time, I barely escape the Unbearable jaws of the bridge, but then it pulls me back And this time, I fall down with it Now it s true, London Bridge did fall down: with me on it Now I m the ghost the of ancient bridges ground But I m not happy here So when you cross, and you hear a spooky, wary voice Singing London Bridge is Falling Down, it s just me It s only me Katelyn West Middle School Nelfi Parthum Educational Complex page 16 Apple Sauce

20 What would you do if you had the chance? That one single question intimidated me. Ya mother told me she would have custody over ya guys five years ago. That familiar feeling overtook my body and made me speechless. I was confused. I managed to speak up and say, Everything wouldn t be the same, I paused, I probably wouldn t even go with my mom because of how my life is now. I hated those talks, I really did. It s hard to have your parents divorced. It s even harder when you constantly have family members breathing down your back asking, Who do you love more, your mom or dad? The discussion continued, You know that you need a women-like figure in ya life. You need ya mother in ya life, she said. I know, but look at me now. I m perfectly fine without living in the same house or state as her. She s there for me regardless of the distance we re apart, I replied. My Aunty was the kind of person who constantly repeated everything. She already said, you really do need ya mother in ya life. Then I realized that there was always Untitled Emily South Lawrence East Middle School question in my mind while I had this type of conversation with people. I was always so scared to ask, but at this time, I knew I had to. Why do you guys always ask me questions like this? I stopped, waiting for a response, but she knew I had more to say. It really is a hard thing to deal with. If anything, I really wished they didn t divorce. My voice was tightening. The tears were ready to come falling down, but I had to restrain them. I needed to stay strong. I knew she knew I was about to cry because of what she said, Let it out, it s ok. I took a deep, long breath. I couldn t finish my part of the talking. She came back into hers and said, I m sorry that your life wasn t built up to be as perfect as you wanted it to, but ya have a mother and a father who care for you guys a lot. Even though I see you once a year, I ll still be here for you. I can t remember everything else she told me, but she was the one who taught me that hard things get thrown at you, but you just have to let the negative things pass by. Having my parents separated isn t easy, but I learned to live with it. page 18 Apple Sauce

21 Pastel Eye Avery, West Middle School Mixed Feelings How do you expect me to live life like this? With all of the fighting, the yelling, the arguing I hear all these voices inside of my head and I ve been thinking about it lately. One day I m gonna make the wrong choice because of the fighting, the yelling, the arguing So then I just start to sing, and I pour all of my feelings out, because music takes me to a different place. So take me away!!! To somewhere I can be alone and think for a while, all I know is that I m not mad at no one else, I m just disappointed in myself with always following everybody else. But now it s my time to shine, and I will show you who I really am. And now I m starting to realize I have mixed feelings about life, because of all the fighting, the yelling, the arguing I guess what I m trying to say is where would I be today if you didn t believe in me? Because I had to try for something, and if I didn t try for something that something would be nothing. Then I would mean nothing to anyone. So you have to believe in me and put aside all of the fighting, the yelling, the arguing Please don t stop believing in me. Kelsey Tenney Grammar School Winter 2014, Vol. XV, No.1 page 19

24 Mornings Tortured by the mornings A slug in my bed The light of dawn Is the darkness of day Up with a meal Of bread and jam Rushed to be ready For an endless Monday Emma Spofford Pond School Self Potrait Emely South Lawrence East Middle School The tears of the sky pound against the lifeless grass, assaulting it with tremendous force. A black blanket, like an empty void, imprisons the land. Color fades, sulking away, unable to show itself. A trunk snaps and crashes to the ground as its other companions silently mourn, succumbing to powerful gusts. Depressed trees bend, having surrendered their strength to the wind, which moans softly, as if calling for someone, someone long gone. Withered and dying, flowers scatter everywhere, a faint memory of happiness that fades into the darkness of the sky. The birds The Day The Sky Cried Kaamil West Middle School flee, for they cannot sing in a place crying in anguish. Lightning flashes angrily, screaming at life itself and thunder roars an ear-splitting plea, begging for the lost to be found again. The wind grows stronger and howls in rage as many more trees lose the will to stand against the unending onslaught. Light flashes and another roar of thunder reverberates through the Earth s core. The world itself seems to be consumed with rage and anger. One stone stands in the midst of the chaos, still, sturdy and unaffected. The stone stands as a silent reminder of a once vibrant life. page 22 Apple Sauce

27 My Father My father has shaped me as a person. He is the fairest, most selfless father ever. My dad is a really positive influence on many people, especially me. He teaches me to learn from my mistakes and to always think and make good decisions. Another quality I admire about my dad is that he treats everyone equally. He is against all prejudice, and he accepts everyone. My dad works as a probation officer, so even though the guys who are on probation have committed crimes, he treats them with the respect they deserve. My father is one of the most selfless people you will meet. He is constantly giving up his time to support me at all of my soccer and basketball games and attends all of my cross-country races. My dad supports me at everything I do or try. He teaches me that failure is alright as long as I truly try one hundred percent. I have the best father ever, and I love him. 30 Going Up While Looking Down Abigail, St. Augustine School My Grammy My Grammy, Vivian Jasmin, worked hard her whole life for her family and their happiness. Vivian was a very strong woman who always put others before herself. She was diagnosed with cancer three years ago and underwent many risky surgeries. She went through these surgeries for us so she could stay in our lives longer and enjoy her family. My Grammy loved to cook and bake, but enjoyed feeding and serving others more than herself. We all loved her cooking. Even when she was living out the last weeks in our house, she never lost her passion for cooking and always wanted to help in the kitchen. Through her tough times, she never lost faith and always believed that she would get past her illness. We even had a priest come and bless her and afterwards she exclaimed, I m cured! This woman raised four excellent children and I m lucky to have her son as a father. Vivian taught them to be wonderful people. 36 I Have A Dream (Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr. s Speech) I have a dream. I have a dream that one day I could walk through a park and not see a single piece of trash on the ground. I wish people would take care of their surroundings and be kind to their home planet. We need to protect our environment. Pollution is disastrous. It is in the world all around us. Whether it is throwing out trash on the ground or dumping chemicals into a river, pollution is bad for the environment. The more we pollute the earth, the less of our natural resources we will be able to use. That would hurt our nation s economy and increase poverty throughout the world. Many people would lose their jobs because goods would cost more and be harder to get. The fish would die, and the soil would become filled with harmful chemicals over long periods of time. No food would be able to grow in this soil so we would have less to eat. Many more people would go hungry than they already do. No one wants this, so why let it happen? We can pollute the air too without even trying. The cars on busy highways and major cities contribute to this. Smog in the air makes it hard to breathe and the chemicals in the air can make you sick. Air pollution is unhealthy and needs to stop. We need to stop pollution because it ruins the beauty of nature. Imagine walking through a park during the springtime and not seeing flowers without trash around them. Imagine a lake or pond with no life around it because people freely dump chemicals into it. It is disappointing to see this. No one would want to go outside any more. Animals are affected too. They could die in an oil spill or choke from plastic circle soda can things that get stuck around their necks. Without pollution, the world would be beautiful. It would be full of prosperity and happiness. City streets would be clean and look safe to go down. There would no longer be global warming, so the polar bears and all the other animals would have a safe and better place to live. This is why we need to stop pollution. We are learning how to get rid of certain waste, but the world is still not our trash can. If we try, we can make our world better and fulfill this dream. 44 I remember when my mom said that we were moving here. I got really sad because I had to leave my best friends, the best neighborhood ever, and especially my grandparents. 50 There was once a man and a woman. They traveled far and wide just to lay their eyes upon each other. The woman had beautiful golden hair that shone brilliantly in the sunlight. Her eyes were deep pools of blue that sparkled like pure diamonds. The man had hair as black as night. He was stiff, and not very keen about showing his emotions. However, the woman could see right through him. She could see that he had formed a barrier around his heart, one that had prevented him from loving another. Determined to penetrate this protective shield, the woman handed the man a flower. She said, This flower is your aid. It will melt away the ice that surrounds your heart. The man only stared perplexed by this peculiar statement. The woman said nothing more; she simply walked away, her delicate figure swaying as she took each step. The man spent days, weeks, trying to unravel this queer message the woman had left him. He only sat there, dazed staring at the flower. It had begun to wilt, so the man started to care for it. He placed it in a glass vase and filled it with water. He changed the water constantly, and made sure it always had enough sunlight. Years passed and still the flower survived. One day, a bald man with an abnormally large mustache appeared at his door. He bared the news that the woman had died of cancer a few weeks ago. Torn apart, the man sent the messenger away, and locked himself in a dark room. He stared at the flower, a single tear dropping to the floor as the last petal fell. The man picked up the petal, allowing one last tear to escape his weary Legendary Lovers eyes. This time the tear descended to the petal, releasing an enchantment the woman had left on the flower. A dazzling array of colors lit up the dark room, and a single scrap of paper drifted into the man s hands. It read: My dearest loved one; by the time you read this I will be dead. If you are reading this, it means you have finally freed yourself from isolation. I am proud of you, and you should be proud of yourself. Farewell my love, we will meet again soon. 56 Burst Of Beauty Ryan, Doherty Middle School Better Why do I feel sad when it rains? Why does my happiness strike when the sun shines? I think I might know why. Everything in my lie is affected by my surroundings. If there is negative energy around me and detrimental people in my life, I too will feel this way and it will effect the people around me in an adverse way. So instead everyone should, Spread the positive vibes, Stop the violence, Care about each other, And love each other more. We all need to be good people, to meet good people. It s an endless cycle that could save the world, And could save lives. I now know that I have unraveled the answers and the virtues that everyone should possess in life. 57 Autumn Bliss On a cool brisk day In a huge colorful pile Of crimson and golden leaves Under the foliage filtered sun Into the pile we jump Out of the pile we run Into the warm, comforting house Under soft cozy blankets Near a blazing fireplace, my family and I relax After a good night s sleep Out of the house we run For a long morning walk Through the imposing, yet inviting woods Under the falling colorful leaves Among the scurrying forest animals With the scent of autumn in the air Under the ever-changing trees To the house, my family and I return for a break Outside the house In the muddied lawn With a football in my mittened hand. Under the unproductive, late afternoon sun To my brother, I toss the ball Into the makeshift end zone between our two maple trees With my family, we cheer, laugh and celebrate being together. 58 Forever Lost There was once a town built on sadness, but also helping hands. The founders of the town tried to portray and capture the feelings of bliss, but try as they might their gloom always slithered its way into anything they crafted. They d splash colors of gloppy paint, even water-resistant paint, but eventually it would all fade to grey. They d sculpt high standing arts, but they always seemed to crash. The false hope this town had ran out, and so did their unfamiliarity. They eventually quit trying to be happy, so together they smiled in sorrow. This solemn, god-forsaken setting was very sad. The skies blotched dark with clouds, and a misty fog haunted life below. But they went on with this life. It was never a drag. They were just all filled full with a hole of longing and misplacement. Ironic, though, since they all felt the same and they all were together. Together as if it had become so much, it was becoming too much. The world around them was dancing by, flashing colors at a speed that was nauseatingly sick. It was simply too complicated. They just wanted it all back: their old world, feelings and thoughts. But it will never go back because it has always been like this; they have always been like this. Forlorn and forever lost. 59 The word itself makes me want to smilebeautiful. It s the sound of pine needles crunching beneath my feet and the way that ocean water is always so cold but never cold enough to make me get out. It s the moment before the last drop of sun slips beneath the wavesbefore I am covered in a cool blanket of darkness. It s the soft twinkle of the scattered stars painted on the dark, smooth canvas of nighttime. Like the sunrise, you are beautiful. To me, you are beautiful. To me, you have hung the sun in the sky, mixed the paints and blended the colors until it was just rightas I would do for you. To me, you are the sun and the moon. You shine in the darkness and lead me. You rise over the choppy, black waves and turn the sky from black to blue, teach the birds to sing, and the trees to dance. You flatter the seeds buried in the soil, coax them from their hiding places and shine light on their small, green leaves. Sometimes you grow dimthe weight of the sky around you crashing in grows too heavy, Something Beautiful Charlotte West Middle School and the other suns who seem to shine much brighter laugh too loudly at your feeble attempt to light the sky. Your faint glow, it seems, cannot shine through the darkness anymore. It was so much easier when no one was watching and waiting for you to burn out. You shed warm, golden tearssundropsand they fall onto the earth, like rain, sinking into the cool soil behind my house. I watch these sundrops fall and wonder- what caused the sun to cry? I watch as you in all your beauty slowly fade away into the steely blackness of the night. I squeeze my eyes shut, and tears spill down my face. For a moment, all is quiet. Then I remember. I push the door open and step into the soil behind my house and find two small leaves poking their heads out from the ground, stretching towards the skythe beginning of a sunflower. The beginning of you. The beginning of something beautiful. Winter 2014, Vol. XV, No.1 page 57

But I lay quietly in the field, apart from all the action, Watching as a boy scores a touchdown. I look to my left and see a hole in the gate, probably from an animal. The trees seem to call my name and beckon me to join them. Maisy, Maisy, come, come, I don t think. I just run. I make a break for the gate, easily slipping through the hole. My laughter increases as I run through the forest, for I am home, Where I belong. Few kids gather round, but leave, with no idea what had just happened. Probably thought it was just a raccoon. All the leaves turn and chatter, telling each other Maisy s home! Maisy s home! For I am, after all. I find some tree branches and a pile of straw dumped from a school event, And build myself a little hut. After quite a while playing, the bell rings and I must leave. The chatter dies as the forest realizes what is happening, But I promise to come back tomorrow. The wind fingers at my hair one last time as I reach the gate. And I run. 65 My name is Chris Clover and I am the mayor of Shamrockville. Shamrockville is home to all kinds of fairies, elves, gods, and goddesses. But it is also home to a pesky leprechaun named Patrick. For months, Patrick has been causing trouble riding the fairies sheep and dogs during the night. He has also been going into everybody s houses and taking their gold. I have tried to sneak up on him while he is mending his shoes. This is the only time Patrick sits still. But we have had no luck so far. I need to capture Patrick and have him return the gold. Because of the bad economy, the town has a lot of bills to pay. I think Patrick has the gold hidden in the forest of Antrim. I have tried to retrieve the gold, but have not been able to get past the forest s magical green shield. So, this is why I had the Four Leaf Clover Fun Center built in Shamrockville. This Fun Center is going to lure Patrick. It will distract him and make him stay in one place. This Fun Center has all the things he would like. First of all, it has an arcade where Patrick can use gold tokens to try and Four Leaf Clover Fun Center Christopher Comprehensive Grammar School win the pot of gold. He will try over and over again the Lucky PacMan and LuckBall games to win, but he will have no luck. Patrick will get tired and need a drink and snack. He then can go to Lucky s Snack Shop where I have left delicious Shamrock cupcakes and marshmellow cereal for him to eat. He is going to overeat and stuff himself. This will make him move slower. Finally, he is going to see the Shamrock Ride. Once he gets on the ride, it will spin Patrick around very fast and make him dizzy. He won t be feeling well and he will tell the ride operator (me in disguise) that he needs to get off the ride. But instead of stopping the ride, I will pull a lever and a net will fall over him. This net is going to be hidden inside of a green plant in the wall near the shamrock balloons. Once Patrick is captured, I will have men in emerald arrest him and bring him to Judge Rainbow. Judge Rainbow will tell Patrick he has a choice to make: tell where the gold is hidden or be locked away in the Four Leaf Clover Fun Center forever. 68 World War II Journal: The Battle Of Normandy Journal Entry - June 6th, 1944 Normandy, France My name is Private John and I was in the second company during the Battle of Normandy. Seconds after our boat landed on the beach, the gunfire started. We immediately took over. The firing of the machine guns made a ringing sound in my ears. I almost missed my commander yell, Take out those turrets! I looked up and noticed a bunker with three men stationed each at a turret. I jumped up from behind the rusty clump of fuzzed metal I was hiding behind and immediately started to fire. I wasn t used to so much power even though we practiced with the same semi-automatic rifles at training camp. I tried to run, but my legs felt like jelly. All I could do was stand there and fire. I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my chest like a thousand bees had just stung me. I looked down and saw a steady stream of blood dribbling down my body. I suddenly felt light-headed and before I knew it, I hit the sandy beach. The last thing I remembered was hearing faint screams and then everything went black. When I awoke, my chest felt different. I looked down and saw a bloodstained patch on my chest. I noticed a man that I had seen on one of the other boats. What what happened? I murmured. After the turrets were taken out, I found you lying on the ground almost bled to death. I picked you up, dragged you here, dug out that bullet and patched up your wound, he said. Where s here? I asked in disbelief. You don t remember, do you? he replied with a comical tone of voice. Remember what? I asked. You woke up after about a mile and said you could walk by yourself. You barely made it here before passing out again, he said. Before I could reply, I heard a gunshot and was suddenly sprayed with blood. The man who saved me fell to the ground. I fell out of the makeshift bed and pulled the rifle from his hands. I stumbled up and fired wildly. I must have gone through a dozen clips before I saw a body fall from the tree. I walked up to the body and knew it was German. He said one thing to me before he died. It was Mir mir heflen. He was trying to say help me. I still remember those words like I d heard them yesterday. I searched his belt and found one of those German automatic pistols. It still had half a clip left. I suddenly remembered the man who saved me. I turned around and there he was, lying in a pool of blood. I ran over just in time to hear him say, Go. Then, he did something I will never forget. He started to cry. He cried and cried and then he just stopped. He just stopped and closed his eyes. I never got to ask for his name. I had to bury him. I pulled a shovel out of his bag and dug. I dug for hours until I had dug a ditch large enough to fit a giant. I dragged his lifeless body to the ditch, placed him in, and buried him. I picked up the rifle and pistol lying next to the German and started walking. All I could think about was that man who saved me. Jack Doherty Middle School page 66 Apple Sauce
