1 2 nd Annual New England Interscholastic Dance Championships Saturday, March 9, 2013 At Braintree High School 128 Town Street, Braintree, MA Presented by the Council of New England Secondary School Principals Association President: Paul Hoey, Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Executive Director: Donn Friedman, The meet will be held regardless of weather conditions. Time: Registration begins around noon. Competition begins at approximately 1:30 pm. Four (4) teams in each division from each state will be allowed to enter. All team names and competitors names must be ed by Monday, March 4, 2013 to Kathy Swillinger at: kscoach@comcast.net. The facility will open for athletes and coaches 1 1/2 hours prior to the start of competition. Teams should check in at the competitors gate. The CNESSPA website will provide the final schedule once all the entries have been collected. Packets will contain CNESSPA pins and certificates for all competitors. $ per team (if you compete in two divisions, the fee is an additional $75.00 for a total of $225.00). There will be no refunds and no purchase orders will be accepted, check or cash only.

2 Checks should be made payable to the CNESSPA and paid at registration on the day of the meet. (Note: Only team members listed on the entry submission and two coaches will be allowed through the competitor gate. $10.00 per person can be added to the entry check for additional team members, who are not on the entry form, or additional coaches.) Plaques will be awarded to the team champion and runner-up in each division. Individual medals will also be awarded to those teams. Concessions will be available. Official New England Dance Championship apparel will be sold at the meet. COMFORT INN North Main Street $89.00 plus taxes Randolph, MA Free Hot Breakfast TOURNAMENT GUIDELINES Check-in time and location: The facility will open for athletes and coaches at 12:00 PM. Each team will be allowed 5 minutes of warm-up time per performance. All teams will be allowed to use the actual performance floor for the purposes of walking through or spacing their routine. There will be a waiting area, stretching area, and warm-up area in addition to the performance floor.

3 NEW ENGLAND REGIONAL DANCE CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDELINES Note: Since the states from New England that will be participating in this event all use different guidelines pertaining to their State Tournaments, the decision has been made to follow the guidelines that have been set by the NDTC (National Dance Team Championships Universal Dance Association), bearing in mind that rules set forth by the National Federation of High Schools Spirit Rules Book will also be enforced. In other words, any rule that is illegal in the Federation Rules Book will be deemed illegal at this event. It is the advisor/ coach s responsibility to become familiar with this rule book reading it from front to back as any portion that refers to a participant also refers to a dancer. A safety judge will be in attendance the day of the event, and teams that will be participating, may contact her in advance, with any questions regarding rules, moves, etc., that they may feel are questionable. A. Each squad will PERFORM A ROUTINE NOT TO EXCEED 3 MINUTES there is no MINIMUM time. Teams that perform for more than the allotted time will have points deducted (see Penalty and Time Sheet for deductions). The time of performance for each team will start when the music begins, or at the first movement (after taking the floor) and will stop when the music ends. Formal entrances and exits are not allowed. B. Each team will be allowed 5 minutes of warm up time per routine. Teams will be allowed to perform in 2 Divisions, but a separate entry fee of $150 (for 1 performance and an additional $75 for 2 performances) must accompany their registration. C. A disc jockey will be provided at the site, however, a team may use their own equipment, if they so choose. IT IS HIGLY RECOMMENDED THAT EACH SQUAD BRING BACK UP COPIES OF THEIR MUSIC. D. Three performance judges and a safety judge will score each team. A separate judging panel will be used for alternating divisions. Technical difficulties will be adjudicated by the tournament director/committee. E. See attached sheet for specific routine rules and guidelines. Actions judged to be illegal by the National Federation Rules for Spirit Groups will result in penalty points being assessed. NO JEWELRY, NO BARE FEET or SPIKED HEELS. Dance, drill, pom teams, must wear athletic shoes or appropriate dance shoes that cover the toes and entire sole of the foot. EXCEPTION: Dance Paws and Pedini style dance shoes that have heels of sufficient height to raise the bottom of the foot off the floor.

4 F. Props no props will be allowed, other than poms in the Pom Division. A prop is defined as something that you dance with or on. If you remove a piece of your costume and dance with it, it is then considered a prop and is not allowed. An example would be: if you remove a jacket and dance with it in your hands, it is a prop if you remove it and place it on the floor (where it cannot be stepped on) it is not considered a prop. G. The Dance Committee will determine the order of performance for the Championship prior to the competition and will notify the participating schools. Teams that will be performing at New England Regionals will be those teams that have been designated by their State as being the top winners of in each division of their individual tournaments. These students must be verified as being students in good standing and be on a Varsity level dance team. H. Competing schools must provide their own transportation at their expense. I. A warm up area will be provided at the competition site for teams prior to the start of the competition. Each team will be allotted 5 minutes of warm up time per division. J. Dressing facilities will be available at the site. K. Medical personnel will be on site at the competition to attend to any emergency needs of the competitors. L. Dance Team Advisor/Coaches are expected to maintain discipline among the competitors and make certain that good sportsmanship prevails in both winning and defeat. Schools will be held liable for the actions of their competitors, which may include, but is not limited to, property damage or assault. LEAVE ALL VALUABLES AT HOME. CNESSPA nor Braintree High School is not responsible for any lost/stolen items. Coaches should carry a bag to hold any needed items such as cell phones, cameras, etc. M. Score sheets will be presented to each coach/advisor at the conclusion of the competition. Also available to coaches will be an order of finish and point totals for their division. A detailed score sheet will be made available once all of the schools have registered for the event.

5 2013 NEW ENGLAND REGIONAL DANCE CHAMPIONSHIPS SPECIFIC ROUTINE RULES AND GUIDELINES In addition to the rules set forth in the Nationals federation High School Rules book for Spirit Groups (dance teams); the following specific guidelines will be in place for the championship TUMBLING AND TRICKS Tumbling is allowed in all divisions as long as one hand, foot or body part remains in constant contact with the performance surface. These skills can be performed individually or in combination. Airborne skills are not allowed when hip over head rotation occurs. ALLOWED Forward/Backward Rolls Shoulder Rolls Headstands/Handstands Backbends Front/Back Walkovers Head Spins/ Windmills Kip Up Cartwheels/Round offs NOT ALLOWED Dive Rolls (of any kind) Aerials Front/Back Handsprings Front/Back Tucks Side Somi Layouts Head Springs (without support) Shushunova Continuous Partner Double Cartwheels Head springs (with support) Toe Pitches A. DROPS Drops to the knee, thigh, seat, front, back, jazz split (hurdler) or split position onto the performing surface from a turn, jump, stand or inverted position must first bear weight

6 on the hands or feet in order to break the impact of the drop. You may do a hurdler position (jazz split) as long as you slide into that position. B. JUMPS/TOSSES 1. Jumping or leaping on or off a dancer is allowed as long as there is hand/arm (supporting dancer) to hand/arm/body (executing dancer) contact with a supporting dancer throughout the skill 2. Tossing form one dancer to or from the performing surface is not allowed. 3. All tosses including toe pitches are prohibited. Dance Lifts: (executed by partners or groups) 1. Dance lifts are permitted and are defined as an action in which a dancer(s) is elevated from the performing surface by one or more dancers and set down. A dance lift is comprised of lifting dancer(s) and elevated dancer(s). 2. A lifting dancer must maintain direct contact with the performing surface at all times. 3. A lifting dancer must have hand/arm to body contact of the lifted dancer at all times. 4. A lifting dancer must maintain control of the momentum, positioning, changes in position and return to the performance surface of the lifted dancer(s). 5. Swinging lifts are allowed, provided the lifted dancer s body does not make a complete circular rotation and is in a face up position at all times. 6. Hip over head rotation of the elevated/executing dancer(s) may occur as long as the following apply: A. His/her hips do not exceed the height of the lifting/supporting dancer s shoulders when standing upright. B. The supporting/lifting dancer must be stationary and C. There are at least 2 lifting/supporting dancers in contact with the executing dancer. Partnering: 1. Dance partnering skills are permitted and are defined as an action in which 2 dancers use support from one another, but are not elevated. 2. Partnering skills are permitted and must maintain body to body contact throughout the duration of the skill. One partner must maintain constant contact with the performing surface.

7 C. CHOREOGRAPHY AND COSTUMING Suggestive, offensive, or vulgar choreography and/or music are inappropriate for family audiences and therefore lack audience appeal. Routine choreography should be appropriate and entertaining for all audience members. Vulgar or suggestive material is defined as any movement or choreography implying something improper or indecent, appearing offensive or sexual in content, and/or relaying lewd or profane gestures or implications. Inappropriate choreography affects the judges overall impression of the routine. Make sure that all choreography is age appropriate. All costuming and make up should be age appropriate and acceptable for family viewing. ALL COSTUME MALFUNCTIONS RESULTING IN TEAM MEMBERS BEING EXPOSED ARE GROUNDS FOR PENALTY. Please make sure you have several dress rehearsals prior to competition to work out any costume problems. SHOES OR DANCE PAWS MUST BE WORN DURING THE COMPETITION. Wearing socks and/or footed tights only is prohibited. Spiked heels are prohibited. JEWELRY IS PROHIBITED (see Federation rules) including covering piercings. ALL piercings must be removed. When dancers are standing at attention, all costumes/uniforms must cover the entire midriff section completely. Nude bodyliners are acceptable. All male dancers costumes must include a shirt that is fastened however it can be sleeveless. **Note the use of powder, glitter, or any airborne substance that lingers in the competition area shall be prohibited.
