2 UPCOMING VETERAN'S DAY EVENT SATURDAY NOVEMBER 7th This year marks the 9th anniversary of the Veteran's Day Event presented by Candler Field Museum. This program has evolved through the years and is now one of the best Veteran's Day celebrations in the region. This year will be no exception. The program will consist of aircraft flybys, Army helicopter static displays, WWII reenactors, and patriotic music. The event will begin with a live concert featuring the Freedom Belles and the Griffin Spalding County Elementary School Chorus. In addition, music will include songs by Mrs. Sylvia Hollums and Eric Moye. The Griffin High School Junior ROTC drill team will also perform. This year s speaker will be Jack McCormick, a decorated Vietnam helicopter pilot. Jack flew the famous Huey helicopter, an aircraft that has become a symbol of the Vietnam War. Jack s primary mission was combat assault which included insertion and extraction of ground troops in unfriendly landing zones. He flew over 1200 combat hours including an operation into Cambodia. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, and the Air Medal with 42 Oak Leaf Clusters. One of the highlights of the event each year is the recognition of all veterans in the audience. This is done by asking every veteran to line up behind their respective service flag and march in front of the crowd. The program will be concluded with a flag folding ceremony by the Marine Corps League, a 21 gun volley, and a missing man formation of PT-17 Stearman trainers while taps is being played. Veteran s Day is an opportunity to publicly commemorate the contributions of living veterans and to remember the sacrifices of those who have died. Originally called Armistice Day it was celebrated on November 11th, the last day of World War I. It became a national holiday in However, realizing that peace was equally preserved by veterans of World War II and Korea, Congress decided to make the day an occasion to honor all those who have served America. In 1954 President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day. Communication Towers, Griffin, Georgia has once again donated an AR-15 rifle that will be raffled off during the event. Tickets for this rifle are $20 and may be purchased at Barnstormer s Grill. Please plan to attend.

AIRPLANE DONATED TO YOUTH PROGRAM We are very pleased that Chuck Panzarella has donated a Piper Cherokee to the Candler Field Youth Program. This airplane will make a great addition to our fleet which now consists of a Piper Cub and an Aeronca Champ that is under restoration. Our goal is to have the young people begin their training in a tailwheel airplane and then transition into the Cherokee to complete their private license. At that point they will transition into the Candler Field Flying Club for additional ratings. Chuck was an Airframe and Powerplant mechanic instructor for Atlanta Area Tech for a number of years. The airplane was completely restored by Chuck who placed a 180 HP engine in the airplane for better performance. Chuck resides in Fairburn, Georgia and the airplane was located at the South Fulton Airport. Ron Alexander ferried the airplane to Peach State in early September and the airplane has been thoroughly inspected and is ready for flight. Our sincere thanks to Chuck for his donation.

7 YOUTH PROGRAM UPDATE By Jim Hoak, Youth Program Manager The Candler Field Museum - Youth Aviation Program continues to grow. We now have 36 students enrolled with 15 to 20 very active at the Wednesday and Saturday workshop sessions. Several of the students are active in both working on our aircraft projects and in flying the J-3 Cub. Most are still flying with instructors but a few have soloed the Cub. The recent primary focus of our shop activities has been to complete the World War II, GC-4A WACO Glider fuselage cabin section, which will be a mobile display. It is looking good enough to put in the air rather than just a display. Also getting much student and mentor attention is our 1946 Aeronca 7AC Champ. A very nice looking engine, overhauled by Don Swords, has been mounted in place and the boot cowl and windshield are ready for final installation. The instrument panel now has all but one hole filled too. The major tasks left to be done are building the cowling and fitting the cabin door and of course, mounting the wings. The students are anxious to fly this aircraft! Another active project is the Piper Cherokee 140, with a 180 HP Lycoming engine, which was recently donated to the CFM-YAP. The annual inspection has been completed and parts have been ordered to clear the few items found during the inspection. This aircraft will be used by the students as they progress toward obtaining their Private Pilot License, after soloing the Cub or Champ. What a neat way for the students to get to the desired PPL. Also, when time, student and mentor availability allow, we continue to work on our many other projects. The shop continues to be a beehive of activity during the daytime too, with Shop Project Manager, Dave Holec and some students who attend during that time, working on the priority projects. To see all of this for yourself, we urge all museum members to stop by the Doug Davis Hangar and check out the progress of the CFM-YAP. And of course, you are invited to volunteer as a mentor and get in on all the fun!

8 This is the WWII Waco glider fuselage section that will be displayed at events by Mr. Knox Herndon. The Youth Program is always in need of adult volunteers. You do not have to be an A & P mechanic to work with us. We have several who volunteer each session. DC-3 VISITS The Candler Field Express DC-3 made a couple of visits during the month of September. It flew to New Philadelphia, Ohio to hop rides for EAA Chapter Terry Henry is the spark plug behind the chapter getting things organized for us and promoting the event. We spent Labor Day weekend there with perfect weather conditions. We carried a total of 417 people over a 3 day period of time. A record for us. New Philadelphia is located just south of Akron, Ohio.

The Candler Field Express also was part of the Atlanta Warbird Weekend held at the Peachtree Dekalb Airport in Atlanta. This event was held September The airplane was on display all weekend and over 1400 people walked through it during that time.

12 DONATION BY SWISS MOUNTAIN PILOTS A couple of years ago I had the privilege of meeting Felix and Nicole Enz. The couple lives near Zurich, Switzerland. They came to our area to fly the DC- 3. Since that first trip they have returned two additional times to fly the airplane. Felix is the President of the Swiss Mountain Pilots. The group decided to make a $1,000 donation to our museum in support of our youth program. I am most thankful to the group for this generous donation. Below is a short story about their organization. The SMP Story The Association Swiss Mountain Pilots, SMP was founded in March, The idea was to allow each Member to fly an airplane professionally. Even from an international airport like Zurich LSZH. This even if you came from a humble background. One of our members has reached it to the B-747 captain, this only with hard work. Our first aircraft was a Beech Sierra 200 BE-B-24-R. One year later we operated also a Rockwell Commander RC-112-A. Later came a Cessna Centurion C-210 as a replacement for the Beech Sierra, which was sold to Hungary.Then we operated also a Cessna RA-F-152-II for pilot training and cheaper training flights. This aircraft flies in Austria today. The SMP offered training courses for young and old pilots, for experienced and for beginners. SMP organized Pilot's family meetings and family trips. After multiple members have passed away and others sold their aircraft and other members could no longer fly for financial reasons, the SMP operating currently no aircraft. No plane - no members: From once more than 60 active members, are to day only 3 left. We are happy that the SMP never had an accident. One reason for this is a good flight preparation, continuous training and further education. 2014, we met Ron Alexander. He showed us the wonderful Candler field Museum. He explained to us the Museum youth program. We are excited and have decided to support this program with a donation. To fly is not only a pleasure, it is also a school of life. 14 This is a picture of the original Atlanta Speedway that later became Candler Field. The speedway was built in 1909 and only stayed open for a couple of years. CANDLER FIELD FLYING CLUB The Candler Field Flying Club recently purchased a Schweizer SGS 2-33 glider. The airplane will be offered to club members to rent. Initially, we will be operating the airplane out of a small grass strip owned by Phillip LaBerge. The strip is just to the south of Candler Field. More about this in upcoming newsletters.
