the Veteran's Day Event. CANDLER FIELD MUSEUM The Candler Field Board of Directors just completed two planning meetings for next year's activities and events. A number of activities are scheduled for 2012 including the following: Benefit Dance and Dinner March 24, 2012 Vintage Day June 2, 2012 Antique Fair September 22, 2012 Veteran's Day Celebration November 10, 2012 We are combining Vintage Day and our annual antique fly-in. Both will take place on June 2nd. We have decided to move the Vintage Day event from August to June in hopes of a bit cooler weather. Also, we are adding an Antique Fair to our list of events. We will invite antique dealers from the area to display and sell their wares. This should be a good event. We need volunteers to help us with these activities. We will be having our next planning meeting for Veteran's Day on Tuesday, October 18th at the Candler Field Museum. If you can volunteer to help us on November 12th please come to this meeting. It will begin at 6:30 PM in the Jack Barbery Library. I would like to encourage you to become a member of Candler Field Museum if you are not. We need your support - both financial and volunteer time. This is your museum. Please take a minute to click on the link below to join the museum or renew your membership. To join Candler Field Museum click here For more information on the museum click here Follow Candler Field Museum on Facebook!! Model A Fuel Truck Donated to the Museum
This 1926 Ford Model TT was donated to Candler Field Museum by our friend Steve Sachs. Steve is a retired Delta Air Lines pilot living in Lebanon, Tennessee. Steve is an active Stearman owner and pilot and is also building a Waco 10. This truck makes a great addition to our museum collection. It is in mint condition. Stop by and take a look. No, the Candler Field Express DC-3 was not sold to Trans Ethiopian Airlines!
On August 4th, Ron Alexander flew his DC-3 to the Atlanta Charlie Brown Airport to take part in a movie shoot. The movie stars Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Dennis Quaid, and a number of other famous actors. The title of the movie is "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and should be released early next year. The movie crew placed vinyl decals on the DC-3 to replicate an Ethiopian airliner. Several scenes were filmed around the plane along with one taxiing scene shot at night. It was a great experience to spend 3 days with the movie people. We were treated royally thanks to Bob Brubaker. Bob has a movie props company in Atlanta. His dad, also Bob Brubaker, flew for Delta and is now retired.
Civil Air Patrol kids Given Airplane Rides for Volunteering at Museum Events On September 24th several Candler Field Museum members brought their airplanes and gave rides to our local Civil Air Patrol volunteers. The Griffin Composite Squadron has been very active in supporting the museum for the past couple of years. They have assisted in parking cars, parking aircraft, and watching out for the safety of people attending our events. The squadron is under the leadership of Lt. John Kimberly. If you are interested in more information about joining the CAP please click here. Several of the airplanes used to hop rides for the CAP. The airplanes and people who participated were Richard Epton with his Gull Wing Stinson, John Kuck and his Stearman, Harry Ballance and his Stearman, Ron Alexander and his Stearman, and Jamie Pittman with the Candler Field Flying Club's Citabria. Ground crew for EAA Young Eagle paperwork was Will Walton, Iilly Liles, and Sandy Woodcock.

FLABOB NEWS (news from our sister airport in Riverside) WWll P-38 Pilots Fly Again at Flabob by Jon Goldenbaum Every two years, veterans from the famous 1st Pursuit Group/1st Fighter Wing hold a reunion, this year at Riverside CA, home of Flabob. This historic fighter unit dates to WWI, famed pilots Eddie Rickenbacker, and balloon buster Frank Luke were among those who made the 94th Hat-in-the-Ring and 27th Fightin Eagles famous. The 1st went on to a great battle record flying P-38s in WWII, then were the first to fly the F-15 Eagle, now the F-22 Raptor. This year, the 1st was honored to be selected to join the Famous Flyer s wall at Riverside s historic Mission Inn Hotel. Since the 20 s, the Mission Inn has recognized aviators with a banquet where a signed ceremonial set of copper wings are hung on the Famous Flyers Wall as a tribute. Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, and Hap Arnold are among those whose wings hang on the wall, the list of honorees goes from the earliest days of aviation to the astronauts. The 1st wing is one of the few units recognized; having the reunion at Riverside was a natural. This event attracted eight of the WWII 1st Group P-38 combat vets including P-38 ace Darryl Welch. As part of the event, Jon Goldenbaum, former squadron commander in the 1st Wing invited all to Flabob for an afternoon of Bar-B-Que, beer, and flying in a variety of antique and classic biplanes and trainers. Every one of the P-38 pilots got to fly again, many for the first time in years. Lots of willing arms lifted them in, buckled them up, and sent them into the air for another adventure. Flabob Wathen trustee Kevin McKenzie gave 13 rides in the N3N biplane trainer, Terry Freedman gave 9 rides in the PT-22. Former P-38 pilot Robin Hansen, now 92 years young, was lifted into the PT-22 for the first time since Robin trained in the PT-22 at nearby Hemet Field, and then went on to combat in North Africa and Italy with the 1st. He and his family were overwhelmed, and frankly, so was the crowd; a great honor to see these 90 -year old fighter pilots fly again.
68 years later, WWII fighter pilot Robin Hansen flies the PT-22 again. Lt. General Bud Wyatt, Commander of the Air National Guard and Col. Randy Ball, Commander 163 RW at March AFB, CA stand in front of the Famous Flyers Wall at the Riverside, CA Mission Inn. For more information on Flabob go to
CANDLER FIELD FLYING CLUB NEWS By Glen Marsh, President September has been another busy month at the Club. Our new 180hp 172 came on line and became the favorite for the month logging over 60 hrs. Charlotte Lentz became our newest student to solo, great job by Charlotte and instructor Brian Miller. Now on to the cross country flying and she'll have that license in no time! We had our Fall cookout featuring Chef Leo's famous Hot Wings and Brats. Perfect weather, great side dishes and deserts, there was almost too much to choose from. The key word being almost. A good time was had by all. We're looking forward to the Fall flying season. Come on down to Candler Field, have a great meal at the Grill, and join the Club. Charlotte Lentz after her first solo flight. For information on the club go to SOUTHEAST AVIATION SHOW
On October 29, GMU will host the Southeast Aviation Show, sponsored by the South Carolina Aviation Association (SCAA). The event will showcase the latest aviation products, a static aircraft display and educational sessions. The event is open to the public for a $5 admission fee. Please help spread the word to all the pilots and aviation oriented people you know! You can now register online at This will help us to have an idea of how many people to plan on and it will also get you admitted into the event faster! Currently the event has 33 booth displays and 20 static displays, and it keeps growing. On display will be a Cessna 172, Beechcraft Bonanza G36, Beechcraft Baron G58, Highlander, BMW cars, Land Rover cars, R44 Raven II 2009, PT-17 Stearman 41, Piper Pilatus, Meridian PC 12, Carbon Cub 55, Diamond aircraft, Cirrus aircraft and more. C3B at Lee Bottom Fly-In Ron Alexander's C3B was flown to Oshkosh this year by Rich Davidson. Rich also flew the airplane to Galesburg, Ill where it attended the annual Stearman Fly-In. The airplane won the Loyd Stearman Award that is presented to the airplane documented as having significant importance to the history of the Stearman Aircraft Company. The airplane also won the Best Civilian award. Rich then flew the airplane to his field - Lee Bottom - where it participated in the annual Lee Bottom Fly-In. The picture below was taken at the event by photographer Bob Burns.
For a link to a video that Rich filmed and edited while the airplane was at the Poplar Grove, Il airport. Steve Thomas did the filming of this segment. Please go to the following:
