PHILLIP LaBERGE PASSES Phillip LaBerge passed away on May 17th. Phillip was very enthusiastic about the Candler Field Museum Youth Program. An avid glider pilot, Phillip assisted our program by helping us establish our glider program. He and his wife Lynda both became actively involved in helping us acquire a glider and in towing and instructing. Phillip was a veteran of the United States Navy where he served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War as a F-8 photo reconnaissance pilot. After his military service he began a 34 year career with Delta Air Lines retiring as a MD-11 Captain. As a museum, we are very pleased that Phillip was instrumental in helping us realize the importance of integrating glider flights into our youth flight program. His legacy will live on. We will miss him! A Tribute to Phil written by Cal Tax

Today, Lou Musgrove towed my 1-26 out of Stoney Point and it was a very rare day indeed!! Cloud bases were above 7,500' and streets were everywhere!! Lift was better than 5 knots and sink was hardly there...! My 1-26 was formerly owned by Phil and Lynda La Berge and I felt like Phil was looking over my shoulder and enjoying the two hours I spent playing with the clouds. I dedicate this rare flight to Phil and Lynda because they made it possible! Phil, you put a big smile on my face today and I hope you fly with me again soon!!!

GLIDER RIDE WITH A MEMORY

Christina Moore with an image of her grandfather. Sunday May 22nd, Christina Moore drove from Gatlinburg, TN to pay a special tribute to her grandfather. Christina's objective that day was to ride in a glider to experience what her grandfather did in WWII. Christina during the flight with a picture of her grandfather.

YOUTH PROGRAM UPDATE At the two and one-half year point, the Candler Field Museum Youth Aviation Program is going strong. We've had some Saturdays in April where we had 17 students present for the shop sessions. Those sessions really keep the mentors busy to say the least. Thankfully, our average number of students at our shop work sessions is around a dozen or so. Currently we have 31 active students working on the aircraft and have several of the students actively flying. Speaking of flying, the recently completed Aeronca Champ should be kept busy since it is our primary aircraft for the beginning students. All those who have flown it have stated that it really does fly great. That means our students and mentors did a great job during the rebuilding of this aircraft. We hope to have twenty-five or so hours on it when two of our students, Rachel Dumas and Jacob Gates, along with mentors A.C. Hutson and Bill Rial take it on a long cross country flight to Oshkosh in July. It will be proudly displayed there for all to see. When it returns to Peach State, we will put a lot of hours on it with all of the students wanting to fly in it.

Some of the students are flying our Piper Cherokee for their advanced hours, working toward taking their Private pilot check rides. Our structured flight training program has recently been refined to the point where the students have a definite path through which they progress toward their Private Pilot Certificate. It begins in the Champ along with some glider flights, followed by some simulator time and finally a substantial amount of time in the Cherokee. We will produce some good stick and rudder pilots! There has been another major milestone event at the shop recently. The 1950 Tango-167 Super Cub has been completed - well almost! The engine has been run and Dave Holec did a brief taxi and now we are waiting for the final inspection. Then it should be ready for the test flight that we will all be looking forward to. It's a real nice looking airplane. Another great job by the students and mentors. Without going into to much detail, let's just say that there are other projects in work in the Doug Davis hangar. In fact there is so much going on that we are flat out of work space. Included are the Brunner Winkle Kinner Bird, the Stearman, a 1941 J-3. another Aeronca Champ and the Little Sonex kit aircraft. It seems like there are wings all over the place. Well considering that two of these aircraft are biplanes, that means a total of fourteen wings for these five aircraft. Where do we put the fuselages for all these birds? Oh, I almost forgot, we also had the Candler Field Flying Club Citabria in the shop to remove the fuselage cover and to do a fairly major repair to the landing gear attach area. It gets crowded in the Doug Davis hangar! As usual we have a lot of visitors come through the shop, and we really enjoy having them visit. We like to show off all the great work everyone is doing. Come by and see us! Jim Hoak CLICK HERE FOR LINK TO YOUTH PROGRAM BLOG For additional information on the Youth Program please CLICK HERE. 12 The Candler Field Express traveled to Tuskegee, AL on May 21st for a fly-in. It was on display throughout the day. For those who have not been to the Moton Airport in Tuskegee, there is an excellent museum there giving tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen. You will enjoy visiting the museum. FLABOB AIRPORT TO HOST ANTIQUE FLY-IN Flabob Airport, our sister airport located in Riverside, CA, will be hosting their annual Flying Circus this month. This is a great event that is growing each year.

For more information please go to DELTA GOLDEN WINGS May 18th the museum was the scene of the 3rd Annual Delta Golden Wings Pilot Reunion. We had a great turnout with approximately 100 active and retired Delta pilots. Retired pilot Jim Hoogerwerf headed the committee that planned the event. The event was a success despite the inclement weather forecast. As it turned out several people were able to fly in or bring their special cars despite the chance of rain. Approximately 86 people registered that included reunions of two Delta pilot classes. In addition to retirees and guests, we were pleased to welcome some Delta Pioneers and Clipped Wings members too. A few pictures follow.

NIEUPORT 11 PROGRESS In a joint venture between the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome and the Candler Field Museum, a Nieuport 11 will be restored to flying condition. The replica was built by Gordon and Kay Bainbridge in the 1960 s and flown at Old Rhinebeck until an unfortunate accident thirty years later. Craftsmen at Candler Field will bring the Nieuport back to life. It will remain on

display in Georgia for a period of three years before returning to Old Rhinebeck. It will be powered by the original LeRhone rotary engine. Anyone interested in assisting with the restoration should contact Brian Karli at the museum. Please CLICK HERE to view progress on the restoration. DATA PLATE COLLECTION By Brian Karli The Candler Field Museum was fortunate to receive a large collection of aircraft data plates from the Jack Barbery estate. Over fifty data plates were collected over a period of many years by Jim Hester of Bowie, Maryland. More were added when Jack Barbery purchased the collection in We will feature a couple of these data plates in each newsletter along with the story that goes with each one. DC-6 serial number Manufactured in June, 1948 the DC6 flew for American Airlines until Sveaflyg AB, at Bromma Sweden became the new owner and registered the airliner as SE- CHC. Interestingly, in 1963, a stairway was driven into the left hand stabilizer causing some damage.

CANDLER FIELD FLYING CLUB by Mike Kanabe

The CFFC has had ups and downs for the past few months. Our Citabria has some major maintenance work which has grounded the aircraft for the past few months. Engine changes on two of the Cessnas has slowed things a bit as well. In addition, instructor attrition has been very high due to the pilot shortage the commercial aviation world now faces. We have added a sailplane to the fleet under Peach State Soaring llc. Anyone who is a member in good standing in the CFFC is invited for a free membership in the glider club. Soaring teaches precision energy management and vastly improves stick and rudder and situational awareness skills. More importantly it is a heck of a lot of fun. The Citabria suffered from a broken landing gear mount and has now been welded back together. We hope to start recovering the aircraft in the coming weeks. If you are able to volunteer some time, please call Mike Knabe as we can use all the help we can get on that project. This is a perfect opportunity to learn some fabric work. The engine on 4394L has been changed and that aircraft is back in action. We will be doing an engine change on 96U shortly. The club would like to introduce Evan Taylor our new full time instructor who lives right here in sunny Williamson Ga. literally across the street from the airport. Please keep him busy! Evan comes to us from a part 141 flight school in Florida and is a graduate of Embry-Riddle. We have 2 Glider instructors now. We have just put our first "student" through his Commercial Glider add on rating. Please join me in Congratulating Dale Carley on his newest rating. If you are interested in adding un-powered flight to your certificate please contact Mike Knabe or Sean Derda. A private add on can be done for around $1500 plus the cost of the checkride.
