Also, in their own words, they taught us what it means to be a respected member of SigEp and how to conduct ourselves as men in this fraternity. It was a black-and-white style of course, you either knew the information or you didn t said current Phi member Carl Jackson. Mr. Jackson was referring to the weekly quizzes we took over information such as our National Headquarters, anthem, toast, colors, and founding principles. Additionally, we were required to know founding dates and the members of our executive board for our specific chapter. We wrote different one-page reflection papers on each of our three founding principles: Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love. The principle of Virtue challenges us to live a moral lifestyle in a setting where it s easy to get caught up in temptations. Diligence challenges us to be persistent in our schoolwork 3 and to prioritize our schedules. Brotherly Love is the inherent companionship we build by hanging around each other and devoting time 4 to building relationships with each other that will grow over our four years here. Every Sigma was also required to interview every single member of the fraternity. Freshman Rodelle Empeno said, I just really enjoyed getting to know all the guys on a personal level. I wouldn t have made the time to get one on one time with the guys without the interview process. By Kevin Toner Class of 2017

2 Issue 2 March 25, 2014 Philanthropy Week and NOLA Trip Keep Pace In keeping with Sigma Phi Epsilon s virtue ideal, our chapter consistently displays a commitment to philanthropy. Last semester, our philanthropy week generated awareness around campus to care for others. We played basketball with members of the St. Louis Arc Foundation, an organization that reaches out to members of the community with special needs. SigEp also facilitated a Women s Self Defense Clinic. Our philanthropy week culminated with SLUperbowl, a flag football tournament between all the sororities are coached by members of our chapter. This year, Delta Gamma won the Championship, ending KD s chances at yet another ring. Overall, the week was fun and fulfilling. As a whole, our chapter is engaged in volunteering with the Big Brothers, Big Sisters Program. This nation-wide effort is built to assign mentors to inner-city youth. The mentors can help their little brother with homework, do fun activities, or play sports. Many SigEps cherish their time with the organization. It allows us to truly make an impact outside of Saint Louis University s campus. In addition to our philanthropy week, our service continues with our Spring Break trip down to New Orleans. Seven members of our chapter spent their break rebuilding and repairing homes that have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. This annual trip serves as one of the most rewarding experiences as a member of this chapter. By Kevin Mueller Class of 2017 Video: Mo Nu Brothers Participate in SLU Make a Difference Day SLU students and SigEp brothers gather as a community before engaging in their service sites. By Kevin Lewman Class of SLU s annual Make a Difference Day was held on October 26 of This year SigEp paired with Kappa Delta sorority to help clean up an abandoned cemetery. Many of our brothers participated and it was nice to see our fraternity give back to the community. It was a great experience that everyone enjoyed and had fun with. The day kicked off with a school wide rally and reflection at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. The groups then were sent out to work from 9:00am to around 2:00pm. This day added to our yearly service total, which stands out in the SLU community. Our chapter looks forward to next year and the impact our fraternity can make in the community.

Brotherhood Bowl Provides Another Classic at Tower Grove Park This year s Brotherhood Bowl occurred on Saturday November 9, 2013 at Tower Grove Park. It is a Mo Nu tradition unlike any other in how it builds brotherhood through intense competition. The seasoned veteran Upperclassmen, sporting all black, squared off against the Younger Classmen in their all whites alumni Cole Christian and Steve Siemborski served as the referees for the day s contest and ensured the safety of each athlete on the field. A well-entertained crowd of twenty (or so) cheered on the action from the sidelines. It was an afternoon of clean, healthy, smash-mouth football played by both sides. The Young boys fought on with Freshman quarter back Kevin Toner and with a fierce defense, led by Sophomores John Jedlicka and Spencer Montgomery. Likewise, sophomore running back Davaun Brown ran like a man possessed on his final year before moving on up to the Upperclassmen team. He earned Co-MVP honors, alongside Junior running back Johnny Cianciabello. The experience and organization of the all Blacks proved to be too much for the Whites, who had more depth on their roster. Senior quarterback Patrick McGlynn led his team, running and throwing within the patented Wild-Pat offense. Junior Derek Petrich proved to be a valuable change up under center, as it gave Pat a chance to free himself out at wide out. Senior wide receiver Jake Fechter and Junior wide out Greg Ackels made up the air attack for the Blacks. The key to the game was found within the trenches, as the Blacks line on both sides of the ball was made up of the same five men. Senior center and nose guard Adam Cruz led this facet of the game. In the end, the Upperclassmen pulled away with a win, completing the senior class 4-0 record over the past 4 years. By Kevin Toner Class of

4 SigEp Claims Fall 2013 Greek Soccer Championship 2013 Dance Marathon Tuesday, October 8 th. The Intramural Soccer Greek League had reached its playoff night. Both the SigEp A and SigEp B teams had made it into the final night of play. SigEp A had received a bye into the second round while SigEp B had to face off against Sig Tau. The first game began at six o clock and was a back and forth affair, until a late first half goal by SigEp B. This proved to be enough for the win and advancement into the semifinal round. After the win, it was determined that SigEp A was to play Beta s B team, and SigEp B was to play Beta s A team. Instead of playing two games, the fraternities elected to play one championship game. Fans lined the sideline from end to end and emotions ran high. Beta dominated the possessions for the first minutes of the opening half, until a penalty shot was awarded to Sophomore Tony Bright. Bright knocked the ball in for a vital first goal, making the score 1-0. For the remainder of the game, SigEp battled off multiple offensive attacks from its Beta competitor. This prevention could only last so long, as Beta was able to nod the score at 1-1 late in the game to send the match into overtime. Overtime could not provide the answer either fraternity was seeking, as 20 minutes were not enough to decide a victor. Penalty kicks would be the deciding factor for the Fall 2013 Soccer Championship. Newly joined brother Jake Koenig would get the nod and responsibility as goalie. After SigEp and Beta traded converted kicks, it came down to one save. Koenig made the play between the pipes, securing SigEp their championship. The SigEp toast was shared at midfield with brothers from every class represented. By Kevin Lewman Class of Hours of Dance and Fundraising for Two STL Children s Hospitals Saturday, November 23, 2013 SLU s 3 rd annual Dance Marathon was the biggest yet. Starting at 3:00pm, dancers and moral captains joined in the BSC Wool Ballrooms, where they would stand for those who can t for 12 straight hours. The night was full of song, dance, food, and fundraising. Participants danced for St. Louis Children s Hospital and SSM Cardinal Glennon. SigEp had their own team and were in the tops for all fraternities in their fundraising efforts. At the end of the night, DM achieved well over their goal, fundraising $126, to equally be split between the two hospitals. By Greg Ackels Class of

5 2 nd Annual Fall Formal Pours On The Memories The beautiful Steeleville, Missouri, the home of this year s Fall Formal. Even with constant rain for the majority of the time at the Birdsnest Lodge, the 2013 Fall Formal was a success. With a weekend filled with camaraderie, adventure, and fun, each brother of SigEp Mo Nu enjoyed being off campus for two days with their dates. The juniors and seniors stayed at the main lodge, while the sophomores and freshmen each had their own place, mainly within the famous White House, where the current Junior Class served as its first occupants only a year ago. While this was a bit inconvenient at times, everyone was good about making it work and the bus rides were full of memories. Everyone arrived Friday evening, where they settled in and enjoyed a night full of song and dance. Saturday was a full day affair, where everyone partook in recreational sports, whenever the rain would let up, and impromptu pranks between classes. As the day wore on, girls went on to change and get ready for the formal dinner, while the men of SigEp replaced their T-shirts with ties. A formal dinner ensued within the main lodge. For the first time ever, the well-known fraternity band, The Diligents, performed on Saturday evening after the formal dinner instead on Friday evening like previous years. The concert and band was lead by Junior lead singers Tim McCoy and Ryan Chollet, while getting the beats from drummer Junior Andrew Erker. The dancing and singing went on well into the night, providing memories for all our brothers. On Sunday morning, everyone headed back to SLU, but not without the memories of a great weekend. While the next Fall Formal is a ways away, Spring Formal is right around the corner, providing excitement and anticipation to all our members. By Kevin Lewman Class of

6 Freshman Spotlight: Brother John Krone From: Omaha, NE (Creighton Preparatory) Major: Business Minor: Spanish Why did you decide to join SigEp? Coming into SLU, I was pretty set on joining a fraternity. I joined SigEp because I knew some older guys in the fraternity from my high school and I had only heard good things about the organization. Also, it seemed the most professional during rush. The guys were really easy to talk to and they went out of their way to get to know you. What are some things that you re involved in? I am on the SLU Club Soccer Team. I also play soccer for SigEp s intramural team. How has SigEp impacted you so far? Sigma Phi Epsilon has impacted me so far by making the transition into college much easier. Meeting all of the fraternity members during the interview process and getting advice from the actives about everything has helped me adjust well to SLU. It is also nice knowing that you can hang out with any of the older guys; they really make an effort get to know the Sigmas. There are no class barriers whatsoever.
