3 Press release PRIX DE LAUSANNE 2008 from January 29 th to February 3 rd in the Théâtre de Beaulieu in Lausanne 36 th edition Lausanne, January 15 th th edition of the Prix de Lausanne. A remodelled week. An exceptional performance during the final. A seminar organised in conjunction with the IMD for a cross-disciplinary reflection. A photo exhibition in the town centre. A video-blog telling the story of the week as experienced by several candidates. Tributes: This 36 th competition is dedicated to Elvire Kremis Braunschweig, founder of the Prix de Lausanne with her husband Philippe Braunschweig, and who passed away last August. It is also a tribute to Maurice Béjart, who died last November and was also instrumental in creating the Prix de Lausanne. A pas de deux entitled Opus 100 for Maurice, choreographed by John Neumeier for the 70 th anniversary of the great choreographer, will be performed during the final of the competition. For six days, 75 of the world s most talented young dancers (53 girls and 22 boys) representing 22 countries and pre-selected by video, will attempt to win the precious training scholarships giving them access to the finest ballet schools and companies in the world. The week s schedule has been remodelled to allow the jury to observe the candidates at greater length in a learning situation. The semi-final has been eliminated, and all candidates will be able to perform their two imposed variations on stage. Candidates will be divided into two age categories, and 17-18, in order to take account of their differences in development, which are particularly striking at this age. "YONDERING" While the jury are deliberating, spectators in Beaulieu will be privileged to witness an exceptional performance, for the first time in Switzerland, of the Yondering ballet created by world-famous choreographer John Neumeier. It is extremely rare that ballets are created by major choreographers for ballet school students. It is therefore a unique opportunity to see such a work in Switzerland, performed by the students of three remarkable schools united in Lausanne on this occasion: the Hamburg, Toronto and Paris Opera schools. A seminar jointly organised with the prestigious IMD business school will be entitled: Sponsors and Artistic Institutions Differing Expectations. Access to this event, which will take place on Friday February 1 st, is by invitation only. The Prix de Lausanne draws closer than ever to the population of Lausanne. During the competition week, a photo exhibition named Bridge 08 and created by young photographers expressing their vision of the dancers taking part in the last competition will be installed at the heart of the town, on the Grand Pont. Cybernauts will be able to follow certain candidates throughout the competition week via a video-blog. The latter will aim to provide a different and more intimate angle on the day-to PRIX DE LAUSANNE I 36 th EDITION 2008

The prime objective of this unique event is to discover, promote, and support talents among the world s finest young dancers. Over 40 of the world s leading dance companies and schools, such as the Royal Ballet School in London, the School of American Ballet in New York or the Béjart Ballet Lausanne, are partners and support the Prix de Lausanne. Truly one of its kind, the Prix de Lausanne provides an extraordinary platform for the professional dancing world to observe, discover, and connect with young dancing talent, making Lausanne, for the last week in January, the world capital of dance PRIX DE LAUSANNE I 36 th EDITION 2008

5 News The aim of the Prix de Lausanne is to identify potential in young dancers, rather than to evaluate their training and achievements to date. Each year, the Artistic Committee of the Prix de Lausanne undertakes a brainstorming session with the jury to investigate more effective ways to do this. These sessions have led to an extensive remodelling of the competition week in Lausanne, with changes focussed on two main areas: Candidates will be grouped into two age categories: ages 15 to 16 and ages 17 to 18. This is to take into account the differences between the youngest and the oldest candidates, which is particularly marked at this stage of their development. Both classical and contemporary classes will be given separately to each group and the choice of classical variations will also differ, with soloist variations suggested for younger candidates and étoile variations reserved for older competitors. The jury will be given more time to observe candidates in a learning environment rather than in variations rehearsed in advance of the competition. This will help the jury to assess the candidates ability to deal with new material and to grasp new repertoire, essential qualities within the professional dance world. To allow the jury to make an in-depth appraisal of candidates prior to the final, the majority of the competition will now serve as a single selection phase. The semi-final which served in past years as an intermediate stage will no longer take place. Finalists (around twenty in all) will be chosen from the entire line-up of 70 or so candidates present in Lausanne. In addition, finalists will now present one classical and one contemporary ballet variation instead of the three presented in previous years. This change is part of our efforts to improve the balance between studio and on-stage evaluations. This refined formula combines a number of changes made over the years and will shorten the total duration of the competition by one day. We believe that the new schedule uses the available time in the most efficient and most effective way, allowing the jury to acquire, over the course of the competition, an all-round view of each candidate s potential PRIX DE LAUSANNE I 36 e EDITION 2008

6 News The schedule will now run as follows: Tuesday: non-competition registrations classical and contemporary classes From Wednesday through Saturday: selection classical and contemporary lessons (with the jury observing only no marks will be given) teaching sessions dealing with classical and contemporary enchaînements (with the jury giving marks) public performance of the two variations on Saturday (with the jury giving marks) Sunday: finals finalists present their two variations in public The public will be able to watch all activities taking place on stage from the balcony of the theatre PRIX DE LAUSANNE I 36 e EDITION 2008

8 Elvire Kremis Braunschweig Dancing her Destiny Co-founder of the Prix de Lausanne with her husband Philippe, Elvire Kremis Braunschweig rejoined the heavenly ballet last summer. A tribute. Nice, March 17th 1922; Vevey, August 5th A life. Eightfive years, of which more than three-quarters spent generously serving the cause of dance. On the Côte d Azur where Elvire Kremis grew up with her mother, who would later make her finest stage costumes, the sky was almost always blue and daily life invariably grey. While the sense of solidarity among the community of White Russian émigrés did its utmost to ease the situation, it was barely enough brought the first contracts and the first emotions experienced in the opera houses of Nice, Marseille, Toulon, Strasbourg and Lyon, as well as Vichy, Paris, Cannes and Bordeaux. Engagements came flooding in and one performance followed on from another. As she successively rose through the ranks as dancer, principal dancer, soloist and étoile, the steadily growing recognition was a natural reward for her blend of hard work and graceful charm. In 1943, carrying false identity papers, Elvire Kremis danced in Berlin between two bombardments on a tour with Les Ballets russes de Paris directed by Boris Kniaseff. Still greater names were to follow: Roland Petit, Maurice Béjart, Serge Lifar, with whom she also worked in various gala performances as the seasons went by. It seemed that nothing could halt her spectacular rise to fame. Legend has it that Elvire Kremis Braunschweig, who had performed some of the finest roles in the classical repertoire, missed out on an international career because of the war. Behind this truth lies another reality: that of a renouncement stemming from love. In May 1953, when expecting her first child, she left the warmth of the footlights for that of a maternal role. The couple travelled to the United States and returned at the end of Today, Philippe Braunschweig still refers to this heart-rending choice in these terms: She never accepted the idea of stopping. She always remained a dancer. All those who knew her can confirm this truth. With popularity and applause now only a memory, her passion for this art remained. Better still, it was driven by a mission shared by both spouses: that of helping young people. Their love of dance was matched by a talent for devotion to a cause. In 1969, the Fondation en faveur de l art chorégraphique was established in Lausanne. Invited to be part of this endeavour, the Braunschweigs discussed it with their friends Rosella Hightower and Maurice Béjart. Around the pool of their residence in Cannes, the spring holidays in 1972 were devoted to drafting the statutes of the Prix de Lausanne that the foundation was to organise. Strict rules and uncompromising ethical principles were its precious signature features and the organisers could rely upon the presence of the two schools respectively run by the famous choreographer (Mudra) and by the distinguished ballet teacher. Representing the driving force behind this International Competition for Young Dancers, the husband and wife team displayed a blend of formidable competence and unfailing commitment. Their secret lay in the perfectly complementary nature of their roles: Elvire PRIX DE LAUSANNE I 36 th EDITION 2008

9 Elvire Kremis Braunschweig provided the technical expertise, while Philippe ensured good governance. The rest is history. During the last ten years of her life, Elvire the dancer created choreographies on canvas and paper, deftly handling paintbrushes and scissors. Paintings and collages, expressing marvellous freedom of colours and body movements, often focused on a favourite theme that lit up her creations from within. Guess which?! 10 A famous choreographer, an exceptional ballet JOHN NEUMEIER : PRESIDENT OF THE JURY In addition to his participation as President of the jury, Mr Neumeier, has generously contributed twelve excerpts from his extensive repertoire, from which candidates can selectthe contemporary ballet variation they will present in the competition. These variations have been captured on film in Hamburg, performed by dancers of Mr Neumeier's company, some of whom are former laureates of the Prix de Lausanne. Candidates will be able to learn the variations from the DVD recording in advance of the competition. During the week in Lausanne, they will be coached in these variations by members of Mr Neumeier's staff. This opportunity to study Mr Neumeier's repertoire with the guidance of his own artistic team is unique to the Prix de Lausanne, and underlines the Prix's reputation as an exceptional learning experience for talented young artists. Director and Chief choreographer of the Hamburg Ballet since 1973 as well as Ballettintendant since 1996, John Neumeier has continually focused on the preservation of ballet tradition, while giving his works a modern dramatic framework. Yes, the phenomenon of John Neumeier is unique in the world of ballet. He is avant-garde in an entirely different way from anyone else. He is not rebelling, he is not straining for recognition ( ) or throwing out the past. He is simple; through his own integrity and insight, pointing a way to the future. 11 A famous choreographer, an exceptional ballet For its 36th edition, the Prix de Lausanne is pleased to welcome the ballet YONDERING, created by John Neumeier, which will be performed by around 40 of the best students from the Hamburg, Toronto and National Paris Opera ballet schools. The title of my ballet - YONDERING refers to an early American expression for the act of crossing the frontier and wandering "out yonder" into unknown adventure. The ballet YONDERING was the result of an invitation to create a work for the students of The National Ballet School of Canada. It was inspired by the wonderful songs of the 19th century American composer Stephen Foster recorded in a new interpretation by the baritone Thomas Hampson. The ballet formed a link between the Canadian School and our Ballet School of the Hamburg Ballet as our students danced it as well immediately after the Toronto premiere. YONDERING indeed has become a bridge between the Schools of Canada and Hamburg, as not only my own initial fee but also the continued help of sponsor groups on both sides of the ocean have assured the ongoing support for the exchange of students and teachers. The great success of this ballet depends on its performance by young, enthusiastic, energetic and idealistic students. In fact, the ballet must only be performed by students students of the very best schools. The Ecole de Danse Opéra National de Paris and San Francisco Ballet School have, in fact, also given their particular quality to this ballet. John Neumeier PRIX DE LAUSANNE I 36 e EDITION 2008

He was born in 1942 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A., where he received his first dance training. He went on to study ballet both in Copenhagen and at the Royal Ballet School in London. He acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and Theater Studies from Marquette University, Wisconsin. In 1963 he was "discovered" in London by Marcia Haydée and Ray Barra, leading John Cranko to engage him at the Stuttgart Ballet, where he progressed to solo dancer and created his first choreographic works. In 1969 Ulrich Erfurth appointed Neumeier Director of Ballet in Frankfurt, where he soon caused a sensation. This was largely due to his new interpretations of such well-known ballets as "The Nutcracker", "Romeo and Julia" and "Daphnis and Chloe". In 1973 August Everding brought him to Hamburg. Under Neumeier's direction The Hamburg Ballet became one of the leading ballet companies on the German dance scene and soon received international recognition. 26 Prix de Lausanne foundation Patricia Leroy Patricia Leroy was born in Paris to artistic parents who were active in the worlds of music and dance. She studied at the University of Lausanne, where she graduated with an MA in literature as well as a Corporate Management diploma. After teaching languages at a high school in Lausanne, in 1987 she accepted the position of assistant to the Director of the Lausanne Stock Exchange. Following the closure of this institution, she decided to devote herself and her skills to the field of dance, an art form for which she had long held a passion. Since 1992, she has served as Secretary General of the Prix de Lausanne, with overall responsibility for the organisation which delivers the annual competition. Mavis Staines Mavis Staines, Artistic Director of the Canada s National Ballet School for the past 18 years, is committed to evolving ballet education by merging the best of traditional schooling with the philosophy that self awareness and self respect enhance quality of life, quality of art and lengthen careers. Her values are reflected in the artistic experiences available to Prix de Lausanne candidates at the competition and to the Prix winners throughout the year PRIX DE LAUSANNE I 36 th EDITION 2008

27 Sponsors, patrons and benefactors The Loterie Romande is delighted to demonstrate its interest in the Prix de Lausanne by lending its support to the competition taking place from January 29th to February 3rd 2008 in Lausanne. It is worth recalling on this occasion that, via the appropriate cantonal organisations, the Loterie Romande redistributes all its profits - representing more than 170 million francs per year - for the benefit of the community in Western Switzerland. In doing so, it is able to fund and/or subsidise projects relating to cultural activities, social action, heritage conservation, environmental protection, research and training. The Loterie Romande also supports amateur sports. The Loterie Romandie extends its best wishes for the success of the young dancers and their future career. The Loterie Romande has provided significant financial support to our competition for many years. The Leenaards Foundation is proud to be able to look back over more than ten years of support to the Prix de Lausanne and in more general terms over its ongoing contribution to the development of dance and the choreographic art at the highest level. Now a major event in the dance world, this competition also promotes the cultural reputation of the Lake Geneva region the world over. Both demanding and prestigious by nature, the Prix de Lausanne well deserves the fervent loyalty of the public and justifies the consistent backing of our Foundation. Created in 1980 thanks to the generosity of Antoine and Rosy Leenaards, the Leenaards Foundation is active in the cantons of Vaud and Geneva. Its mission is to serve the public interest in a philanthropic spirit and it grants support in the form of patronage for a variety of projects demonstrating excellence in the social, scientific and cultural fields. In terms of culture, the Foundation is active on behalf of institutions, artists and public events. While the forms of support vary, they all meet the criteria of high quality and general interest established by the founders. Honoured to be helping youthful talents blossom and express themselves, the Leenaards Foundation is delighted to once again witness this gathering of the finest talents in their generation. The Leenaards Foundation offers a "Prix de Lausanne Scholarship" PRIX DE LAUSANNE I 36 th EDITION 2008
