Call out the 4 terms listed below at different intervals. Students perform designated exercise. *Champions-jog with your hands up in the air *Training-Practice pretend jump rope skills without a rope *Boxing-Practice pretend shadow boxing far away from other people *Dead Bug(Knock Down)-Lie down on the floor & move your arms and feet in the air Get Fit Rock, Paper, Scissors-Find a partner. Players perform Rock, Paper, Scissors with their body instead of their hands. Cues are below. *Rock-Land two feet together *Paper-Straddle legs *Scissors-Front to back straddled leg position Each player jumps 3 vertical quick jumps and then lands in one of the positions above. The rest of the rules are the same. Rock crushes scissors, scissors cuts paper, paper covers rock. Play to 5 and then mingle to find a new partner. Grid Aerobic Two Square-Need a grid space, a poly spot and a playground ball. Use floor tape to make Two Squares. Students play basic four square but have 6 people per square. One person at the bottom of the square and one person at top of square and two people per side. All players stand outside the boxes. Player one bounces the ball in their box and taps the ball in to the box across from them. Then each player rotates one box position to the right side. Once a player at the top or bottom hits the ball, all players rotate. Each player starts with 5 points. Players lose a point each tie they miss hitting the ball after one bounce and or the ball does not make it into the opposing box. Players keep track of their own points. Once a player loses all 5 points they move to another Two Square game. This is a fast paced past game once the students get the hang of it!
4 Page 4 Great Ideas for Your Physical Education Classes This summer I had the privilege to both attend and present at the James Madison University Summer Institute for Physical Activity. The 2009 Teachers of the Year were the featured presenters on the first day of the conference. Below is a sampling of some of the creative lesson ideas that I was able to take away from the conference. Jen Higgins, 2009 EDA Elementary TOY Muscle vs. Fat Have several hula hoops spread out around the playing area. Place some large foam balls(fat) and some small foam balls (muscle) into each hula hoop. Divide students into equal teams. Students try to remove the fat (large foam balls) and add muscle (small foam balls). They can only take one fat at a time and can only bring back one muscle at a time. If students are caught by the teacher removing too much fat or gaining too much muscle at one time (taking more than one ball at a time) they are given extra fat by the teacher who informs them of their penalty (The blue team has just gone on a fast food binge and has gained extra weight). Variation: Add a defender at each hoop using a noodle to tag. If students get tagged they must put the muscle back and go back to their hoop before they can go to another hoop. Variation: Use scooters to move from one hoop to another. Fitness Kickball Equipment: Bases, 5 nerf balls and a box of hoop Group Size: Two equal teams Description: Divide the class into two teams. One team is at bat and the other is the fielding team. The teacher pitches. Located next to the teacher is a box or hoop with five different balls in it. Varying by color works well. The teacher begins to roll a ball to the batter, who kicks the ball and begins to run the abases. As soon as the batter begins to run, the teacher takes another ball from the box and pitches it. The fielders must retrieve the ball and put it back in the box. The fielding team must never let the box be empty. The batting team is trying to kick and run the bases as fast as possible. Hustle Component: Cardiovascular Endurance Equipment: one poly-spot for each child, 2 beanbags for each child, music How to Play: Each student places a poly-spot in self-space with 2 beanbags sitting on it. This is each player s home base. The object of the game is to collect as many beanbags as possible in the given time while the music is playing. A player may only grab one beanbag at a time from another s home base. A player may not go back to another player s home base two times in a row. There is no guarding of your beanbags. Continue collecting beanbags until the music stops. When the music stops, count the number of beanbags that are on your base. Repeat. Try to beat your first score. Grab the Apple Component: Muscular Endurance Equipment: beanbag or other soft item How to Play: The object of the game is to try and grab the apple before your partner does. There are many different versions that the students can try. Some examples are listed below. Pairs start by sitting cross-legged on floor facing each other with hands on knees. Play music, when the music stops try to grab the apple before your partner. Now call a specific hand to grab the apple. Place hands on shoulders or other body parts, when the music stops, grab the apple. Lay back, knees bent in curl-up position, do curl-ups to the beat, when the music stops, grab the apple. Push-up position, do push-ups to the beat or just hold, when the music stops, grab the apple. Push-up position, alternate lifting the legs to the beat, when the music stops, grab the apple. Push-up position, lift each hand to the beat, when the music stops, grab the apple. Have the students come up with their own good starting position.
