THE SEATTLE SCHOOLS ALL-CITY MARCHING BAND 2010 STUDENT HANDBOOK

WELCOME TO THE ALL-CITY MARCHING BAND!!! Welcome to the 2010 edition of the SEATTLE ALL-CITY MARCHING BAND. Established in 1951, the All-City Band has been developing student leadership, showmanship, and musicianship for 59 years! A top notch band, ALL-CITY receives numerous performance requests each year and has won over 100 first place and sweepstakes awards in the past decade. I am so excited to have you as a part of our band FAMILY! Because of your experience in ALL-CITY you will be a better musician, a better marcher, and a more enthusiastic band member than ever before. Do not worry if you have very limited marching band experience, everything you need to know will be taught to you over the next couple of weeks. ACB MEMBERS come from a variety of high schools around the area and form long lasting friendships with people they otherwise would have never met. Some of my closest friends today are the people I met as members of the ALL-CITY BAND. While the ALL-CITY experience is fun-filled, there is a lot of hard work involved. We PRIDE ourselves on a TRADITION of musical and marching excellence. Much is expected of our student participants. Good attendance habits are essential as every member plays a vital role in the musical and visual strength of the ensemble. You are expected to attend all rehearsals and sectionals and to arrive on time. To be early is to be on time. To be on time is to be late. To be late is to be left. If there is a special circumstance or conflict, please inform your staff member at least one week in advance, so that we can make adjustments as necessary. Extensive absences from rehearsals or performances will result in a loss of academic credit and your possible exclusion from performing engagements. All of our staff members are ALL-CITY BAND ALUMNI, and the majority of them are volunteers, who return year after year to ensure that you have the same quality experience that they had. The director of the band is Marcus Pimpleton, music director at Denny Middle School. Mr. Pimpleton is assisted by staff coordinator Ryan King. In the first couple of days there are a number of forms we need filled out right away. Please turn in the entire packet of forms by Thursday June 25th. These forms are required in order for you to participate in the many ALL-CITY BAND events. I am certain you will have a great time in the 2010 ALL-CITY BAND. Marcus J. Pimpleton Director Seattle All-City Marching Band

UNIFORMS UNIFORMS The uniform for the ALL-CITY BAND consists of a green polo shirt with ACB logo and the American Flag, white Dickie pants with a white webbed belt and a brass buckle, and white Classic K Swiss or Adidas Stan Smith shoes. Items are available for purchase through the band s administrative assistant at the following prices: SHIRT $15.00 PANTS $38.00 SKIRT $38.00 SHOES PURCHASE ON OWN; SEE BELOW Pants, skirts and shirts are purchased through ALL-CITY BAND. Students will be directed to a specific vendor for shoes. All members of the band, will need to purchase a shirt with the US Flag insignia. Returning members need not purchase new shirts, pants, skirts or shoes unless the item of clothing is not in presentable condition. Measurements and orders for all clothing will be taken on Thursday June 24th. We wear polo style pullover shirts and they come in sizes S, M, L, XL, and XXL. The price for pants, shirts and skirts include tax. ALL CLOTHING ORDERS MUST BE PAID FOR AT THE TIME OF ORDERING. MAKE CHECKS PAYABLE TO ALL-CITY BAND SHOE INFORMATION All-City marches in Adidas Stan Smith 2 shoes, preferably with green heels (as pictured). White heeled shoes are acceptable. We recommend ordering them online, as they are hard to find in stores, especially very large or very small sizes. Zappo s sells sizes 4-14 for $59.99, and ships them in a few days. Onlineshoes.com has also been a good source. If you are unable to find the shoes in your size, the all white Adidas Superstars or the Classic K- Swiss are acceptable alternatives. See Mr. Pimpleton if there are additional issues regarding shoes.

ATTENDANCE POLICY AND CREDIT INFORMATION ATTENDANCE POLICY Each member of the All-City band is important to the overall performance of the group. When you must miss a rehearsal or event, adjustments must be made to cover your spot. The following policies apply to students that are planning to miss a rehearsal or event: 1. You must provide written or ed notice to one of the administrative staff members at least three rehearsals in advance of a planned absence. Be sure the note includes the dates you are going to be absent, and for what reason. The administrative coordinator keeps track of the daily attendance so that the director can use this information to determine credit eligibility. 2. You must also verbally notify your staff member so that they can make any needed changes to the rank placement. 3. If there is an emergency situation and you end up missing an event, please bring a note stating the nature of the emergency to the next rehearsal you are able to attend. HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT Seattle Public Schools students can earn a.5 high school credit in their choice of Physical Education or Fine Arts for their participation in the ALL-CITY BAND. To receive credit, you must be sure that you have provided the correct high school and Student ID number on your ALL-CITY BAND Membership Registration. Students from outside of the Seattle School District must supply us with a correct and complete mailing address of the school where you would like credit to be sent. We will send a letter to your school and credit may be granted at the discretion of your school and school district. To receive credit you must fulfill the following requirements: 1. Participate in no less than 16 rehearsals 2. Participate in the scheduled performances 3. Have all music memorized in a timely fashion 4. Be prompt for all rehearsals and performances 5. Be an enthusiastic and cooperative member of the group 6. Have been enrolled in your school music program 7. Students receiving the PE credit must be in regular attendance for the fitness/nutrition unit. NOTE: Baton twirlers and members of the Flag squad need not have been enrolled in a music program during the school year. Excused absences MUST be submitted in writing to your staff member or to the Administrative Assistant.

CODE OF CONDUCT FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS STUDENT EXPECTATIONS ACB has a proud reputation as the area ambassadors for school music programs. The following code of conduct applies to all students and staff when participating in band functions, when on the way to/from a band function, and/or when wearing clothing (uniform, sweatshirt, t-shirt etc) associated with our organization. Failure to uphold the following behavioral standards may result disciplinary action including your suspension or expulsion from the band program. 1. All Seattle School District rules and policies are in effect. 2. Weapons, drugs, and alcohol are strictly prohibited. Students attending a band function or wearing band paraphernalia under the influence of drugs/alcohol will be immediately expelled from the program. This is a zero tolerance policy and no exceptions will be made. 3. Students are expected to show respect for all facilities and property we come in contact with. Students will leave rehearsal facilities, performance facilities, and busses in the same or better condition than they are found in. 4. Students will show respect for property and equipment. 5. Students are expected to use respectful speech and actions when dealing with staff, peers, parents, and community members. 6. Participation in the All-City Band is an honor. It is not your right. PARENTAL BEST PRACTICES All-City Band is not only a major commitment for the students. The hectic performance schedule requires a lot from parents as well. Here are some tips to help parents make it through the summer as smoothly as possible. 1. BE MINDFUL OF THE SCHEDULE! Event notices providing the details (particularly pick up and drop off times) are typically released the rehearsal before the performance. Not much firm information can be provided prior to that time. The most current event information (based on previous year s experience with most events), is available at in the Event Schedule section. The event schedule is always subject to change. 2. BE RESPECTFUL OF THE STAFF. The All-City Band staff is made up primarily of volunteers, most of whom were students in the group only one to three years ago. Parents should be mindful of this and interact with staff with the same level of respect you would want another adult to treat your son/daughter in the same position. 3. DIRECT CONCERNS TO THE SENIOR STAFF. Our director is always willing to talk with parents about questions and concerns related to the All-City Band. Concerns related to the running of the band or the management of a section should be directed directly to the band director, who will be happy to discuss your concerns with you and if needed followup with the appropriate staff members or students. Parents should refrain from directly confronting volunteer staff members other than to express positive words of encouragement or to inform them of a situation regarding your child s health or attendance. Concerns about paperwork, money, or other administrative issues can be directed to the administrative coordinator or the administrative assistant..

ACCOUNTABILITY Below is a list of the basic consequences we have for both students and staff regarding their participation in our program. The use of laps is not intended to be punitive; rather, they are one of the tools we use to demonstrate our sense accountability to one another and to the group, to allow for reflection, and to make up time missed from rehearsal or performance. Students are encouraged to take laps at their own pace and to talk to a staff member if there is a physical condition preventing from them being able to run laps. CAUSE Less than 10 minutes late to rehearsal More than 10 minutes late Unexcused absence from rehearsal Missed the rehearsal before a event Late to a performance EFFECT 1 Lap 2 Laps 4 laps Staff and director approval needed to perform Lose your spot, become a hole filler 1 st Unexcused absence from a performance Warning from the senior staff member 2 nd unexcused absence from a performance from band Consultation with director, potential drop Failing Inspection 2 Laps around band, second inspection w/ senior staff Failing Senior Staff Inspection Lose marching privileges, follow on sidewalk DISCIPLINE PROCEDURE Because of the nature of the commitment involved, serious behavioral incidents in the All-City Band are extremely rare. Nevertheless, it is important that students recognize that this is a school district program and that as such students are expected to participate accordingly Student s failing to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the expectations laid out in this handbook will be disciplined in the following manner: 1 st Offense Warning/Discussion with your staff member and reminder of appropriate expectations. 2 nd Offense Section Based Consequence (loss of spot in rank, early sectional, 1-2 laps; written apology to section/band) 3 rd Offense Conference with the band director and possible parent phone call 4 th Offense Suspension from the program or certain activities of the program 5 th Offense 1-4 year expulsion from the program depending on the offense In the event of a serious violation (illegal activity or violent acts) we will advance straight to step 3 or 4.

UNIFORM CARE AND REGULATIONS SHIRTS must be: CLEAN Free from wrinkles Bottom button on collar buttoned Tucked into pants PANTS must be: CLEAN Free from wrinkles Pressed and creased down the center of each leg Hemmed so that socks do not show or pants do not fold or wrinkle when standing at attention. JEWELRY: NO jewelry or watches will be worn with the exception of the ALL CITY BAND pins, and plain gold post pierced earrings. HAIR: ALL HAIR must be away from the face. Hair clips or bands should be a natural color to match hair color.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES AND PURCHASES ALL-CITY YEAR PINS ALL-CITY BAND members who wish to purchase the current year s ACB service pin may do so for a cost of $16. Each year, for a series of five years, the pins are a different color. Purchase of the pins is voluntary on the part of each member and does not affect one s membership or standing in the band. Previous year pins can be ordered for a cost of $18. Money for pins must accompany the order and checks should be made out to ALL-CITY BAND. The color of the pin this year is White. We have a limited number of pins pre-ordered, and pins will be distributed on a first come, first served basis until the supply has run out. The order of pin color is: White Green Royal Blue 2013 Yellow Red OFFICIAL BAND PICTURES Pictures of individuals and sections will be taken on the evening of July 15th at Gasworks Park beginning at 5:15 pm with the FULL BAND picture to follow. Members are not obligated to purchase pictures. Payments are made directly to the photographer and not to the ALL CITY BAND. MISCELLANEOUS EXPENSES Students may need to have some pocket money, for lunch, snacks and other purchases, when the band travels out of town. No dollar amount can be quoted for this. ALL-CITY BAND GEAR There will be a number of items you can purchase throughout the season. These include things like All-City CDs, All-City Sweatshirts, Summer T-Shirt, and Section T. Shirts. Keep your ears open for these as they come along during the summer and during the off season.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES BAND COUNCIL ACTIVITIES All City Band has a student leadership group called the band council which organizes social activities for the band. Band council activities are not official All-City events, and the band staff will not necessarily be attending or participating in a supervisory capacity. In other words participation is at your own risk. Although not a part of the official band program, many of the band council activities are fun ways for the students to get to know their fellow band members and become acclimated to the program. Some of the more regular band council events have been: Pagliacci s: Many students meet up at the Queen Anne Pagliacci s for food and socializing after practice. This is also the place the band council meets at on Thursday nights. Sani-Can: A favorite tradition is that each year, the same night as the Lake City parade, there is an all night party at a students house. Staff and parents are on hand to chaperone at this event in which students perform skits, see a humorous video of the summer s highs and lows and learn about the history of the All-City Band. Scavenger Hunt: The All-City Band scavenger hunt has also become a favorite tradition. Students form their own groups and are given a list of items to find and collect throughout the city from friends and relatives. The students spend most of the afternoon and evening riding or driving from place to place trying to collect as many of the items on the list as they possibly can before meeting up at the finish line to see which group was able to find the most items. Bucketball: All-City Band tradition prohibits disclosing the rules of Bucketball to new members, prior to the Bucketball game. It is unclear where exactly Bucketball originated (several myths regarding its origins have been passed down in various years) but it is a rough sport which has been played unofficially by All-City Band members for over 25 years. Bucketball is not an official All-City Band Event. Participation is at your own risk.
