Editor Workbench Hello Fellow modelers and dear friends, Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you get to spend time with your family and friends, get to eat lots of turkey and get to work on your models. November was an exciting month when it come to modeling here in the Southwest US. Modelzona, the No. 1 scale modeling event was held on November 5 th in Mesa by the Craig Hewitt Scale Model club who as always did a fantastic job at their annual model show and contest. We spent a day at the Air Force Commemorative Museum which is just an excellent venue for a scale model show. There were plenty of sights to see and or course plenty of great models. In this month s newsletter we bring you another one of my attempts at telling a story with as few components as possible. I hope you like my Russian front vignette. Also, Dave Brown shares his experience in running his first 10K in the 309 th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group, or AMARG Walk/Run through the Boneyard. Don t forget next meeting we will do our little SDMB Model of the Year contest so don t forget to bring an entry. Until next time! 3

AT THE EDGE OF THE VOLGA I have always been a fan of dioramas and vignettes and while the large dioramas that include many components are quite impressive I feel telling a convincing story with very few elements is an even greater challenge than a large and complex diorama. One of my favorite stories is the siege of Stalingrad where through the winter of 1942 both German and Russian soldiers went through the unimaginable and a Battle for the city by the Volga River quickly became a struggle for survival itself. My goal was to tell a story that would capture the desperate fight of the Red Army as it found itself with their backs toward the river and knowing as some soldier put it, there was no life for them on the other bank of the Volga. The base is very small, only 5 X 3 ½. I wanted a base that would look like maybe a small canal by the river side, so after deciding on the layout I made the canal with a piece of Styrofoam that was covered with plaster sections carved to look like paved rocks. The side of the canal was painted in various tone of grays and given washes using acrylic inks to show the texture and unify the different gray tones. The next step was to create the water. This would be an important element for the setting of the scene. I first painted the bottom a dirty green tone. For making 8

At the Edge of the Volga The water itself I used a product called Envyrotech Light. This is a type of resin used to give furniture that common deep shine. You can read more on how I made the water in the November 2016 edition of Mold Lines. I also added various details like the rusty pipe and chain and the boxes that were resin casts of originals scratch built out of styrene sheet. I was very happy with the end result. Now it was time to add our protagonist. For this I chose a Red Army soldier figure from Tamiya s 1/35 Russian Assault Infantry. The figure was assembled without any modification and given a coat of flat black. I almost always start with painting the skin on figures. I gave it a coat of Vallejo Dwarf Flesh. 9

At the Edge of the Volga Dwarf Flesh is dark and it has a reddish tint. which is perfect. After some acrylic ink washes to deepen the color I started to highlight the highest areas with lighter tones. These were achieved by adding bone white and then pure white to the color mix. The coat was given a base coat of Vallejo Russian Uniform. The same method for darkening the color tones on the skin was used for the folds and crevices on the coat. After the washes were dry I added small amounts of Vallejo Khaki and started to highlight the raised folds of the coat. I slowly added more Khaki and then some Bone White. I did not add pure White to the mix because I didn t want the tone to look chalky. 10

At the Edge of the Volga For the belt and ammo pouch I wanted to recreate the worn and often torn at the edges look that old and beat up leather can sometimes get. I first created a dark brown color by mixing Vallejo Colors, Bestial Brown (no ), Gory Red (no ) and Black. I painted the belt using this dark reddish brown color. I then stippled the edges using Vallejo Orange. Next I did the helmet. Using a piece of lead foil I made the chin strap. Then after a coat of black primer I mixed a drop of Bestial Brown and two drops of Russian Uniform Green to make sure the color of the helmet would look similar but not identical to the coat and applied a base coat. The helmet was finished with some scratches using a dark brown color. The chin strap was painted in leather tones. 11

At the Edge of the Volga The submachinegun s barrel was drilled and then after a black primer coat I painted the wood parts with Vallejo Parasite Brown (no ). A wash of brown ink was applied and then highlights were done by adding Bronze Flesh tone (no ). Then the metal parts were slightly dry brushed with gun metal. The boots were given a coat of pigments diluted with odorless turpentine. Pigment was also applied to some areas of the coat like around the knees and lower edges. The final details on the base were added like the rope made out of rigging cord and the spend casings made out of small lengths of copper wire. 12

The Most Unique Military Run/Walk in the USA By Dave Brown As many aircraft modelers know, the 309 th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group, or AMARG (also know as The Boneyard), located at David Monthan AFB here in Tucson, is where hundreds of military aircraft are stored, row by row, cocooned and protected, awaiting their fate. Some are destined to be scrapped, others are regenerated to become target drones, and a few may actually fly again in service of our or another nation s Air Force. Public access to the boneyard is virtually nonexistent. The grounds are fenced, protected and monitored. Tours are offered through the esteemed Pima Air and Space Museum, but these are conducted on buses and there are no bus stops for the more curious who might like to wanted among the relics. There is another way, however, to get into the boneyard. But you ve got to wear your running shoes! On October 29, 2016, the 309 th AMARG hosted their 4 th annual Desert Boneyard 10K Run and 5K Run/Walk. One of our SDMB club members is the Operations Officer at the event at our October meeting (Thanks, Andrew!). I had to do it, and even through it would be my first 10K run, there was no way I was going to miss this chance to see the boneyard up close and personal! What follows is a herky-jerky, somewhat-out-of-focus, tried-my-best-to-compose, photo tour of my 10K experience running through the boneyard. You ll see just how wide a range of aircraft they are storing there 15
