1 Cape Cod Wood Turners February 2013 Meeting Minutes & Newsletter Club Business President Clarke Buchanan welcomed all to the meeting--34 were present with several visitors. The "Bring Back" turning for the meeting by Peter Haney, a double cedar bowl, will be given to the first raffle ticket winner picked during the wood swap. That person will bring a turned item to be given away during the raffle at the next meeting. Tonight's demonstrator, Bob Davies, also graciously donated 3 of his lures to the swap. Inside this issue: Club Business Activities Committee Featured Presentation Show & Tell Next meeting 1 & 2 2 & Treasurer Toby Lorenzen reported that there is $2,035 in the treasury with 26 members paid to date. Please get your $20 dues paid for 2013 to Toby ASAP with an updated membership form. Note whether your can be given out to Craft Supply. Outgoing treasurer Howard Whelden was given a round of applause in appreciation for his service to the club. Activities Committee report: March will feature Steve Patzman demonstrating an undercut April will have Peter Haney as a demonstrator The September picnic location at Grey's Beach costs the club $110 to reserve the pavilion. Alternatives in the mid-cape area will be considered at sites that have a shelter and bathrooms available--get your ideas to Clarke. Clarke is holding a sawdust session at his house on Saturday, 2/16 at 10 a.m. on chucking/holding/driving for up to people. Clarke is thrilled to have his sawdust session filled to capacity with interested turners Our web site, capecodturners.org, has a member gallery that only a couple of people are taking advantage of. If you'd like to be included, contact Jim Silva and he'll set up a page for you with 3-10 pictures and a short biography. Also, he can list your own website, list links to good articles, other web sites, or demonstrations. Our website will also have a classified section available soon.

2 Upcoming events: Totally Turning is being held March 23-24, 2013 at Saratoga Spring City Center, Saratoga Springs, NY David Ellsworth is doing a demonstration for South Shore Woodturners in Abington on April 6, They still have openings--see their website. The AAW Symposium is being held in Tampa, FL in June 28-30, Clarke discussed several upcoming opportunities for the club to demonstrate and/or sell turned items at Heritage Museum and Gardens in Sandwich, Marstons Mills Village Day, Cotuit Center for the Arts, Greenbrier in Sandwich, and Southport in Mashpee. Several members indicated their willingness to help out at events--updates will be given as dates and specifics become available. Old/New Business The Board has authorized the purchase of a new video camera (about $200), a wireless mic with speaker (about $125), and a Jacobs chuck (about $60) for use by the club at meetings, demonstrations, and community events. The winner of the spice grinder club challenge will be voted on by ballot at the next meeting. Wayne Shepard has more mechanisms if you are interested in participating. Members will donate their grinders to the club for sale at community events or to be used as club donations. A $10 gift card to Craft Supply and bragging rights will be the first prize. Beth Ireland reached her goal of raising $30,000 for her traveling studio for her Turning Across America project. Our club contributed to her project. Wood from the elm tree at the John Brown House in RI will be available to be picked up in the near future--mike Traynor, Mike Grady, and Mike Gould volunteered to help Clarke with the pick up. Other members volunteered to turn pieces and return them to the Brown House as donations. Wood from a beech tree at Heritage Museum in Sandwich may be available to club members. There may be opportunity to display and sell items from the beech in their gift shop for split between the turner and the museum. In follow-up to Clarke's s about the liability insurance, a motion was made, seconded, and unanimously approved to investigate and pay for the $425/year policy through AAW which covers approximately what the 2012 policy did with the added inclusion of all club members. Members felt it was important to have insurance for the club's protection and to include everyone in the benefit. If necessary, raising additional funds through a small increase ($10 annually) in club dues or increasing outreach to sell turned items were discussed as options. Featured Presentation Fishing lures by Bob Davies of Happy As A Clam With A Rod in My Hands Bob has been turning lures since He produces about 1,000 lures/year with 3 main types--red eye poppers, long shot with a 3/8" eye in the front, and slippery squid with a 5/8" eye in the back. All of his lures are 6 1/2-7". He uses a Nova 3000 lathe with a Vega duplicator. He showed a video of the process in his shop and had an extensive display of various phases of the process.
