I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : Jun Demonstrator 1 Pres Corner 1 May meeting 2 Treasurer Report The Web New Member Pens for Troops Symposium dates 3 3 May Challenge 4-5 Instant Gallery June Challenge 5-7 Our demonstrator for the TSW June meeting is no stranger to the club. Doug has been a member of TSW for many years and has served as the President of TSW and program coordinator. Due to his expertise in turning he has been the demonstrator numerous times. He can produce some very exquisite pieces of art as many of us have seen over the years. Doug has been turning about ten Doug Spohn Demonstrator for June years in addition to his other hobbies and responsibilities in life. At the June 20th meeting (1:00) he will be demonstrating how to turn a thin-wall natural edge bowl. Doug has shown a number of thin-wall pieces in the past and he is able to really make them thin and even. Everyone will find some benefit from this demo on Saturday. President s Corner Last month Doug set up a great group of demo s on finishing. Several members showed how to apply their favorite finishes. I myself really got a lot out of it. For instance I have tried a CA finish, but not with much success. I feel after last month, I could handle it with no problems. Don t forget the challenge for June is a pen, pencil or stylus. Simple or Tri-State Woodturners an official chapter of AAW complicated all will be accepted. Remember the more you participate in the challenge, you'll qualify to enter a drawing at the end of the year. Lastly a word on safety. Summer brings sandals and flip flops. In this one I speak to myself as well. Keeping you feet protected is important so wear sturdy shoes before turning. Keep our hobby safe.
2 P A G E 2 Ed Lewis putting finish on a bottle stopper Today s woodturner has a fabulous array of finished to use to enhance the beauty of their creations May TSW Meeting Ed Lewis began a series of members sharing finishes they use. Ed s finish was using a sanding sealer with a cloth and then to apply a small amount of friction polish. He also gave some tips on oil finishes. Charles Helton went next talking about the use of the Beall Buffing system which will bring out more gloss and shine on nearly any finish. Joe Price demonstrated how he uses CA glue as a finish especially on items like pens. He did some wetsanding with micro mesh and finished up talking a little about Epoxy as a finish. Finally Charles Jennings talked about applying polyurethane both as a spray and wipe on where he cuts it 30% with mineral spirits. He also talked about using Zinzer sealer cut 30% with denatured alcohol. He recommended buying poly in small cans because the shelf life once exposed to air is rather short. Charles credited Larry McClish for the technique he uses. Time flew by quickly and several comments were expressed on how helpful this session was for them. I think most everyone attending found some good helps to take home and use in their shop/studio. Charles Helton has a lot of experience with Beall Buffing C U T S A N D S C R A P E S Joe (left) showing CA Glue application and above him the epoxy he uses. 3 J U N E Treasurer s Report Beginning balance 2, Income: Dues Wood Raffle Total Income No Expenses Ending Balance 2, Currently 45 TSW members with 9 new members this year. P A G E 3 The Web While there is a wealth of info available on the internet some is worth the effort to view and other things would be better lost in cyber-space. This however is an interesting link to a cool segmented pen. I think you will really enjoy seeing it. I liked it enough to make a similar one which will be brought to the meeting Sat. v=3mveg-6uilg&feature=em-subs_digest Turning Pens for the Troops thru Tool Box You are encouraged to support the business of Tool Box Woodcraft as they provide local support and materials for woodturners in this area. Their store is located at 5824 Brainerd Rd. (Across from Harbor Freight) Manager Wayne Loveless often demonstrates for TSW and started bringing materials to the meeting for sale. He has also been providing gift certificates to the club for the wood raffle. Upcoming Symposiums In their recent newsletter an offer was made if you pick up slimline pen kits which they will donate or you can provide them, and turn pens for the troops, to be returned by July 4, the store will give you a 5% discount on your purchase of pen turning supplies if you turn in 5 pens. You can get a 10% discount by turning 10 pens. (Max 15% off) Pen kits are available at the store or Wayne will bring them Sat. This is a great way to use your turning skills to encourage our troops that are sacrificing for our freedom. A simple gesture with an extraordinary impact.
